Justice for Candy

• As we continue to fight for Justice for Candy by pursuing animal cruelty charges as well as illegal search and seizure (opening the doors to our house without permission). I think that Jayna and I have decided to use ANY money leftover, after all the legal ramifications, to bring attention to making police officers go through animal interaction training (especially with that of dogs). We also feel that dogs that are wrongfully killed by police officers should be treated as dependents and not property! This must be a crime!!!

The case of Santa Clara vs. Hells Angels ruled on in 2006 should be used as a reference tool, as the U.S. Supreme Court has set a standard individual jurisdictions need to go by.

Back in 2006, Santa Clara County Board of Supervisors approved a $990,000 settlement to pay motorcycle group Hells Angels for the death of three family dogs.

Page 13: Dogs and Police, Shoot or Don’t Shoot · 2016. 5. 10. · Shoot or Don’t Shoot •Read this if your dog was shot during a Police raid. The case of Santa Clara vs. Hells Angels

Dogs and Police, Shoot or Don’t Shoot

The methods used in the raids with the shooting of three family guard dogs, could be used as a case reference in dogs shot by Police in our time. The Police had planned the raids for over a week and didn’t take into consideration how they would handle any dogs on the property. This is very similar (lack of a plan) to what’s taking place today.

• “If the owner or another person known to the dog is not available, you may be able to gain the dog’s acceptance by softening your approach. Dog experts recommend you stop moving toward the dog, assume a bladed stance sideways to the dog, and avoid eye contact, while talking to him in a strong reassuring tone. This may have a calming effect that will allow you to safely conduct your business and leave.”

Fighting a dog with a stick or impact weapon:

• Your basic tactics when fighting humans with a stick or impact weapon are to break bones, or cause pain. Dogs have a much higher pain threshold than your average human, so you may not be able to end a dog attack through use of pain. Immobilize or incapacitate may be your only options.

• You have two primary target areas on a dog with an impact weapon: the head and the legs.

Fighting a dog with a stick or impact weapon, continued:

• These are high value targets as they are relatively thin and if broken will completely immobilize the dog (they will still be able to bite, so be wary).

• Strikes to the ribs or spine may be effective, but will have to be extremely powerful to cause enough injury to immobilize or incapacitate a large dog.

• Use Impact weapon as a bite stick if needed.

Why do Police have trouble with dogs?

1. Not understanding dogs

2. Irresponsible owners

3. Criminal owners

4. Ignorance of the law

5. Poor judgment

6. View any dog running toward you as a threat

7. Getting in BAD location or position

• Ethology is the scientific and objective study of animal behavior. Experience and knowledge of dog behavior may help you predict how different dogs will respond to you. If you understand animal behavior, you will sometimes be able to guess what the animal will do next. Knowing the signs of different behaviors can help you decide how to handle the animal.

• Some animals may behave oddly because they have not been socialized. Just like people, animals that were neglected or abused when they were young may behave strangely when they are older. These animals are sometimes called asocial, which means that they are not as friendly around people as socialized pets.

Aggression

• To say that a dog is “ aggressive” can mean a whole host of things. Aggression encompasses a range of

• behaviors that usually begins with warnings and can result in an attack. Dogs can abort an attack at any

• point during an aggressive encounter.

Justice for Bullet, the audacious story of Bullet being shot by Round Rock Police in his own house, have had an official crime scene recreation done by former officer, forensics expert, and canine aggression expert Jim Crosby.

There were holes on the family's futon where Bullet was laying as well as in the hallway.

The incident was "internally investigated" and deemed justified. Hopefully, now the Round Rock PD will properly investigate the incident and look at the FACTS.

Types of aggressive behavior: 1. Territorial Aggression • This is very simple, dogs live in certain areas, and they defend

their area from intruders.

2. Protective Aggression • Dogs are a social species. If a member of their pack or family

is in danger they will typically rush to help.

3. Possessive Aggression • Food aggression, but sometimes dogs will hide their cherished

things and guard them from people or animals that have no idea they are close to these items.

4. Fear Aggression

• Dogs and people who are afraid of something prefer to get away. If escape is not possible then a fight response is necessary.

5. Defensive Aggression

• Closely related to fear aggression, but instead of retreat, they attack.

Dogs and Police Shoot or Don’t Shoot

6. Social Aggression

• Dogs live in social groups just like people do, if a dog feels that someone or something has overstepped his or her bounds, aggression can occur. Examples: taking away food, trimming dog’s nails, physically moving a dog while they are sleeping, etc.

7. Pain Aggression

• An otherwise friendly dog can become aggressive when injured or in pain.

Caring for Injured Canines • Muzzling • With a four-foot piece of small rope or gauze, make a surgeon’s loop

(double knot) in the middle. • Lace loop over dog’s nose and pull snug. • Pull ends under dog’s mouth and tie with an overhand knot. Pull ends to

the back of the dog’s head and tie in a square or reefer’s knot. • Moving Injured Dog • After muzzling the dog, lay a large towel or blanket next to the animal

You may need some help to slide the animal onto the towel or blanket. • The improvised stretcher can be picked up by the corners • Try to use a towel or blanket large enough that when the edges are

brought together, the dog’s head will be inside the folds.

8. Predatory Aggression

• Dogs are descendants of wolves and still show some signs of canine predatory behavior. Running people, people on bicycles, and cars are some examples of what some dogs like to chase.

9. Dog Aggression

• Training, dominance, fear, and territory are some of the reasons for dog aggression, usually between dogs of same sex.

10. Redirected Aggression

• If you interrupt a dog’s aggressive behavior toward another person or an animal, and the dog barks at, snaps at, growls at or bites you, this is considered redirected aggression.

10. Dominant Aggression

• These dogs are dangerous and unpredictable, usually only have one person who controls them. This dog does not discriminate and should not be approached without the proper tools for a safe capture.

11. Maternal Aggression

• Most Mothers, regardless of species, have an innate and hard-wired tendency to guard their progeny from potential threats.

12. Barrier frustration/Aggression

• Many dogs who otherwise play well with other dogs off-leash, may display reactive behaviors, barking, lunging, and growling when on leash.

• How Police Officers contribute to dog bites:

1. Lack of training.

2. Attitude about dog calls (another damn dog call).

3. Judging dogs by their breed.

4. Not getting enough information before responding to a call (policy problem).

5. Lack of observation skills, getting in a bad position.

Man diagnosed with rare pneumonic plague in Colorado

• DENVER (Reuters) - A Colorado man diagnosed with pneumonic plague, a rare form of the disease that is also the most life-threatening, is the state's first confirmed human case of the illness in a decade, officials said on Wednesday. (07-09-2014)

• The man was found to have the disease after the family dog died unexpectedly, and a necropsy concluded the animal was afflicted with pneumonic plague, the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment said in a statement.

• The unidentified man and his dog were believed to have contracted the disease in an eastern Colorado county. There was no word on the man's condition.

• The bacteria that causes plague occurs naturally in the western United States, particularly in Colorado, New Mexico, Arizona and California, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

• The plague is transmitted by fleas to rodents, usually prairie dogs. When an infected animal dies, the disease is spread when the fleas find another host.
