To create an effective vehicle for moving ideas from our nation’s research institutions to the market, where they can benefit both private sector and military customers.

Purpose of STTR

Cooperative R&D projects involving a small business and a research institution

l Universityl Non-profit Research Institutionl Federally-Funded R&D (FFRD)

STTR Funds

The Participants

l Firm: U.S. for-profit small business of 500 or fewer employees.

l Research institution: no size limit.

l Research institution: U.S. college or university or non-profit research institution, FFR&D.

Participate in STTR Program:

The Work

l Must be performed in the United States.

l Small business must perform a minimum of 40% of the work.

l Research institution a minimum of 30% of the work in both Phase I and Phase II.

l The small business must manage and control the STTR funding agreement.

l The principal investigator may be employed at the small business or research institution.
