FOREWORD TO THE LIST OF TEXTBOOKSON/OR RELATED TO INFORMATION SCIENCE

Having been involved during the lastseveral years in curriculum studies in in-formation science,1,2,3,4 (references arelisted at the end of the Foreword) a newintuitive feeling had been acquired by meabout the kinds of tools which could bestserve the educational process in the field.It must be made clear that these studieswere concerned, in the main, with what wasbeing taught in the schools where informa-tion science programs existed, rather thandeveloping curricula in the abstract todictate what should be taught. Althoughthis in itself is a noble cause and can bevery useful to those who wish to improveor modify their programs better to meetwhat they might consider to be societalneeds, it is not enough. It is too easyto become enamored with one's self and toacquire self-esteem about one's programscourses, offerings, teaching methodologies,or what have you, and become blinded tothe needs of our society. For this reason,we also have conducted a Delphi Study whichprovided us with new and most interestinginsight into the direction in which educa-tion in information science must go.

The one thing that these studies pro-7Aded for us, which we considered important

the production of the bibliography re-aAting to information science, was thetopic areas or disciplines to be includedunder the umbrella of information science.How aver, classical books in other disci-plines belong in Other disciplines and toinclude them in this report would be re-dundant. For example, a book on bL7rtiticsor one on algebra .Ls still a book on sta-tistics or a book on algebra. We havetherefore gone somewhat the other way,i.e., we have tried to look at books anddecide what general areas must be createdfor optimum inclusion.

It is impossible to include every bookpublished which rightfully belongs in thisbibliography. For this reason the authorwould like to apologize for omissions, undereach category, of many good books. Theprocess for selection of the books, whichwere included in the bibliography, was adifficult one. At first, efforts were madeto include those books which'are currentlyused as textbooks in information science.As time went on our efforts shifted towardsproviding more heterogeneity and greatervariety of points of view. An effort alsowas made to include books with variouslevels of difficulty. Much of the biasintroduced was due mainly to the author'sfamiliarity or unfamiliarity with books.Any omission of books rightfully belonginghere and the annotations produced for theothers, to which people may object, simi-larly are due to the shortcomings of the

author. However, this textbook bibliog-raphy is being created as an initial ef-fort at the request of ERIC Clearinghouseon Library and Information Sciences of theAmerican Society for Information Science(ER1C/CLIC/ASIS), and they will publishupdated versions as the needs arise. Onthis basis, the .author will be happy tomake amends as quickly as his attention iscalled either to an omission or to a de-sired revision on an annotation

The second edition is a substantial im-provement over the first. Perhaps the titleof the book is a misnomer. The book isMore an introduction to information Sciencewhere the logic and structure of computersare introduced. The book could be class-ified as a librarian's point of view ofinformation scienca and its utilizationof computers.

Becker, Joseph, and Hayes, Robert M.Information Storage and Retrieval:Tools, Elements, Theories. New York:Wiley, 1963.

One of the best written books on thesubject of information retrieval. A littleout of date but still rCcommended as a text-,book. It is well suited especially forlibrary schools.

Bourne, Charles P. Methods of InformationHandling. New York: Wiley, 1963.

A reasonably good book on "how to do."Outdated (some of the previously triedtechniques are being discarded and newones, not included, are being adopted);and to many manual systems (edge-notchedcards, etc.). It badly needs revision.

Pairthorne, Robert Arthur. Towards Infor-mation Retrieval. Hamden, CN:Archon Books, 1968.

This is a collection of papers by theauthor. Because he made important con-tributions to the field, reading thesePapers is important. He provides insightinto information science problems which isdifferent from the standard or classicalapproaches taken. Not a textbook but. worthreading.

Xochen, manfred. Some Problems in Informa-tion Science. New York: Scarecrow Press,1965.

One of the fine reference. books on thegeneral subject of information retrieval.This book was not written as a textbooknor intended to be one. The print israther difficult to read. It appears tobe a photo- offset of a typed manuscript.

Lancaster, Frederick Wilfrid. InformationRetrieval Systems; Characteristics,Testing, and Evaluation, New York:Wiley, 1968.

This is a book about information re-trieval. Every author of a book injectsof himself into his book--his background

of evaluating a large information retrievalsystem shows up well. The major concernand/or emphasis is on retrieval languagesand their influence on systems performance.It is indeed another point of view.

Meetham, Roger. Information Retrieval;The Essential Technology. Garden City,NY: Doubleday, 1970

A beautifully detailed book on informa-tion retrieval, well suited as a first ex-posure to the subject. The clarity of thelanguage used to express the technology iscommendable. Further, the way the materialis presented provokes thought and discus-sion. A highly recommended book.

Salton, Gerard. Automatic InformationOrganization and Retrieval. New York:McGraw-Hill, 1965.

The book deals with the standard prob-lems of automatic information storage andretrieval. In addition, it contains thedescription of SMART in greater depth thanany other book. A better-than-averagedescription of dictionaries and thesauri

for information retrieval is given.

Schultz, Louise, ed. The InformationBazaar. Philadelphia: Medical Docu-mentation Service, The College ofPhysicians, 1969.

This is proceedings of the 6th annualnational colloquium on information re-trieval. It contains some interestingpapers and some. that are rather dull, justlike any other proceedings. A good ref-erence book or outside reading.

%ickery, Brian Campbell. On RetrievalSystem Theo.a. London: Butterworth,1961.

Here we have a step-by-step descriptionof information storage and retrieval sys-tems and their usage. The book is gearedto librarianship. The word "On" in thetitle is intended to indicate its incom-pleteness. In this respe,:t it is correct,possibly because the date Of publicationis 1961.

Vickery, Brian Campbell. Techniques ofInformation Retrieval. Hamden, CT:Archon Books, 1910.

Another book on "how to do;" the libraryproblem in an automated environment, ordealing with ephemeral materials.

Williams, William F. Principles of Auto-mated Information Retrieval. Elmhurst,IL: TEe Business Press, 1965.

This represents a collection of much ofthe work that has been done in the fieldof information storage and retrieval. Itincludes all the trivia that went with it.Rather than providing basic principles ortheory it gives step by step procedures of

A very elementary introduction to thesubject serving as a precursory introduc-tion to dissemination. The entire fieldis covered in less than 80 pages.

Bennett, Edward M., ed. Military Informa-tion Systems; The Design of ComputerAided Systems for Command. New York:Praeger, 1964.

Although the treatment of the subjectis directed towards the faculty, the bookshould have a more pervasive function, anddoes. Several papers, from leading indi-viduals in the field of information, arepresented which deal With the criticaldimension of information both as a humanexperience and as part of environments.

Blumenthal, Sherman C. Management Infor-mation Systems; A Framework for Planningand Development. Englewood Cliffs, NJ:Prentice-Hall, 1969.

The text, which provides a straight-forward approach towards the design, imple-mentation, and utilization of the treat-ment, is clearly presented and presents a"PERT" orientation to the design of suchsystems.

Churchman, Charles West. The SystemsApproach. New York: Dell PublishingCo., 1969.

This book reads like a novel--OK forreference or background reading--not atextbook.

Dearden, John, and McFarlan, F. Warren.Management Information Systems; Textand Cases. Homewood, IL: R.D. Irwin,1966.

A book tailored for the manager orexecutive to show him how computers can beused to manage the organization. The textcites particular problems in data manage-ment within specific, realistic day-to-daysituations.

Heany, Donald F. Development of Informa-tion Systems; What Management Needs toKnow. New York: Ronald Press Co., 1968.

Design and implementation of computer-operated management information systems isthe book's purpose. It discusses how toproceed in developing the informationnecessary for management information sys-tems design.

Kent, Allen, et al, eds. ElectronicHandling of Information; Testing andEvaluation. Washington, DC: ThompsonBook Co., 1967.

This is the proceedings of a conferencerelating to evaluation of informationhandling systems. It is a collection ofinvited papers, each selected because ofthe individual, special, recent contribu-tions (at that time) to the field ofevaluation. The attempt was to bringtogether the state-of-the-art in the de-velopment of criteria and measures forevaluation, as well as the methodology forgathering data and evaluating performanceof information systems.

Meadow, Charles T. The Analysis of Infor-mation Systems; A Programmer's Intro-duction to Information Retrieval. NewYork: Wiley, 1967.

The text complements the book by Rosove(see below) in f,utlining the character ofinformation systems and the problems likelyto be encountered in their design andoperation. The book stresses the organiza-tion of records and files, and theeconomics of information systems.

Prince, Thomas R. Information Systems forManagement Planning and Control. Rev.ed. Homewood, IL: R.D. Irwin, 1970.

Specific management information subsys-tems on such as inventory control andmarketing management are dealt withinthis book. It is a good second book formanagement information systems (MIS).

Rosove, Perry E. Deve3oping Computer-BasedInformation Systems. New York: Wiley,1967.

An excellent text to show how informa-tion systems are conceptualized, aligned,and implemented. Problems that are to befaced in the design of such systems arediscussed in easily understood language.

Tou, J.T., ed. Advances in InformationSystems Science. Vols. 1-2. New York:Plenum Press, 1969-70.

The aim of these two volumes is to de-scribe the state of knowledge of informa-tion systems--the related theory and tech-nology. The subjects range from artificialintelligence to biological information pro-cessing. Treatment is suited to advancedgraduate students in either computer or

This is a good introductory textbookon information storage and retrieval sys-tems, especially for people from otherfields. It establishes a firm base forinformation systems; treats the identifi-cation of information reasonably wall; andexamines critically information centers.The appendix provides examples for thematerial in the rest of the book. Itquotes a little too much what othersthink.

Williams, Thomas H., comp. ManagementInformation; A Quantitative Accent.Homewood, IL: R.D. Irwin, 1967.

With only peripheral relation to in-formation, this book is concerned mainlywith data. Its importance to the informa-tion scientist As that it makes clear thedistinction between the problems of dataand information management. It is par-ticularly suited to accounting interests.

Wilson, Ira Gaulbert, and Wilson, MarthannE. Information, Computers, and SystemDesign. New York: Wiley, 1965.

Information theory and systems theoryare brought together in this book in a wayas to make both more useful. Although theauthors are rigorous in their approach,there is room for applying one's owA think-ing in the environment they provide. Thebook discusses man-machine trade-off. Itprovides enough mathematics to providerigor and yet little mathematics is re-quired to use the book. The lack of prob-lems inhibits its use as a textbook.

A very good treatise of informationtheory for engineers. It explains theprocesses of transmission including band-width implications and speeds of trans-mission for circuit design. It containsa good presentation of the coding theoremsand their implications to transmission.

This is a very good textbook intendedfor a graduate student in engineering.The student is expected to have a maturebackground in mathematics, including cal-culus, theory of probability, and randomprocesses.

Goldman, Stanford. Information Theory.New York: Prentice-Hall, 1953.

A book rigorously detailing Shannon'snotion of information. The treatment ishighly technical. There are better booksin the field which treat the subject morelucidly, although Goldman's treatment isquite comprehensible.

Harmuth, Henning F. Transmission of In-formation by Orthogonal Functions.New York: Springer, 1969.

This book is mathematical. and dealswith the entire transmission problem- -mathematically. Not useful in any otherway.

Jelinek, Frederick. Probabilistic Infor-mation Theory; Discrete and MemorylessModels. New York: McGraw-Hill, 1968.

One of the finest books on the subject,and requires an in-depth dedication to in-formation theory. A good mathematicalbook and easy to follow.

Khinchin, Aleksandr I. MathematicalFoundations of Information Theory.Translated by R.A, Silverman and M.D.Friedman. New York: Dover, 1957.

A mathematical presentation of thefundamentals of information theory.

Katz, Samuel. Recent Results in Informa-tion Theory. London: Methuen, 1967.

A mathematical treatise, pure andsimple.

Kullback, Solomon. Information Theory andStatistics. New York: Dover, 1968.

This is a very advanced book for theo-. retical and applied mathematical statisti-cians--intended for Ph.D. students.

Raisbeck, Gordon. Information Theory; AnIntroduction for Scientists andEngineers. Cambridge, MA: M.I.T. Press,1963.

The book explains some cf the ideas ofinformation theory and shows how they canbe applied to certain problems in signaldetection and transmission. Not a text orreference book, but interesting readingfor a student in information theory.

Reza, Fazlollah M. An Introduction toInformation Theory New York: McGraw-Hill, 1961.

A very extensive book on informationtheory. Includes an excellent treatise ofstatistics and probability relating to theproblems therein. Covers theory of trans-mission--with and without memories. Verysophisticated--graduate level.

Shannon, Claude E., and Weaver, Warren.The Mathematical Theory of Communication.Urbana: University of Illinois Press,1949.

This book consists of two papers."Recent Contributions to the MathematicalTheory of Communication" by Warren Weaver,and "The Mathematical Theory of Communica-tion" by Claude E. Shannon.
