INTRODUCTION
The Directory of Organizations Related to TeacherEducation contains a listing of more than 150 organizations, agencies, institutes and volunteer groups which broadlyaffect teacher education. These organizations are involvedin developing curriculum, providing training, promotingprofessional advancement, instigating programs of innovativeinstruction and implementing educational policy for preserviceand inservice training of teachers for educational, instructionaland managerial applications.
The purpose of the directory is to list on one place themany diverse groups which attempt to influence the educationand conduct of teachers. An effort has been made to gather allindependent organizations. Not included are government agencies, foundations, and groups that are an integral part of collegesor departments of education and whose main interests arerestricted to a particularly small geographic area (ie., acounty or state). To include every group who seeks to improveteacher education would have set impossible goals forrealistically updated information.
Centers and labora"%ries funded by the U.S. Department ofEducation, Office of Educational Research and Improvement arein APPENDIX I and II. Appendix III contains a list of statedepartments of education, with the names and telephone numbersof the individuals responsible for teacher education andcertification in that state.
The organizations are listed alphabetically by theiracronyms; the ACRONYM INDEX contains the acronyms used andthe full name of each organization. (Our computer prtnessorallows no two organizations to have the same acronym, thereforeseveral have been slightly altered.) Each directory entrycontains a coded bottom line which lists the activity interestsof the organization. The interest codes are listed in theINTEREST CODE INDEX, each followed by the acronyms of theassociated organizations. The INTEREST CODE INDEX is locatedimmediately after the body of the directory.
Each directory entry contains the organization's address;contact persons; telephone numbers; a brief description ofmembership and purpose; activities involving teachers, teaching and teacher education; types of publications andcoded interests The information contained in each directoryentry was collected by a mailed questionnaire and verifiedvia telephone contact. The questionnaire used is includedafter the appendices. The information is correct effectiveNovember, 1985.
Several organizations have been flagged with an "X"in their interest code; we could not establish communication
4
with these organizations but considered their role inteacher education too important to exclude them fromLe directory. The information listed in these entrieshas been culled from the Directory of Associations (GalePublishing Company, 1985) and assorted references fromthe library of the Office of Educational Research andImprovement.
We anticipate updating the directory periodically. The questionnaire included can be used to add to orcorrect our files. The listing of committees, task forcesand project groups provides information about the currentactivity that an organization supports concerning the interestsof teacher education. Please feel free to add explanatorymaterial. Finally, as with any project of this magnitude, there are omissions and we would apprectiate informationpertaining to them. Mail update material to ERICClearinghouse on Teacher Education, AACTE, One DupontCircle, NW, Suite 610, Washington, DC, 20036.
We wish to thank Penny Purdue for her work on thisproject. Her many hours of attention to an enormousnumbei of details have provided the profession with avaluable source of information.
