Developed for the Spanish-speaking student at thenonreading level (Level A) , this booklet is one of three.modules(Levels A, B, and C) in a curriculum unit on the appliance repairperson. (The curriculum unit is one of a series of 12 curriculumunits, each on a different occupation, designed to develop careerawareness in migrant and non-migrant Spanish-speaking students atdifferent reading levels, particularly in grades K-6.) The booklet isdivided into three sections: (1) Teaching Unit, which includes alisting of occupations related to the appliance repair person at theentry and professional levels, unit objectives, major activities (twoplays) , coordinated subjects (reading and social studies) , attitudeand awareness concepts, and a suggestion for a large group experiencewhich would provide a broad focus on the cr eer cluster; (2) StudentActivities I and II (in separate sections), which provide full-pagepictures corresponding to the sequences of the stor!es presented inthe teaching unit, and which allow the testing of stqdent learningaccording to unit objectives; and (3) Criterion Rftlerenced Tests,which correspcnd to the two student activ4.ties. El concepto de a-grupaci6n usado aqui es el concepto que emplea la Oficinade Educación de los Estados Unidos, titulado: "AgrupacionesModificadas" que agrupa las funciones ocupacionales de lafuerza obrera de la nación en quince amplias areas genera-les. Para obtener una amplia visi6n de la carrera, comien-ce las lecciones con una experiencia en grupo.

EXPERIENCIA DEL GRUPO,

Anpliance Renair Person - Level A

BEFORE THE LESSONS.

The student will be introduced to the occupation of an Ap-pliance Repair Person as representatives of the broad ca-reer cluster of Product Services. The cluster concept usedhere is the concept used by the U.S. Office of Educationtitled "Modified Clusters" which groups the occupationalfunctions of the nation's labor force into fifteen troadareas. To obtain a broad focus on the cluster, begin thelessons with a group experience.

LARGE GROUP EXPERIENCE,

The teacher should prepare the bulletin board with a pictureof a clock and with provision for a writing surface. Withthe help of the students make a list of skills that thestudents can do and of work-related terms that the studentsrecognize at their present level of development. The bulle-in board can then provide a framework for a comparison ofa student's day with that of a worker's day, and a of theorganization of the school with that of other work settings.

No. Some repair persons work only on radios andother electronic equipment and some work only onmotors and pumps. Some repair persons are work-ing for a manufacturer of a special brand of ap-pliances and repairs only equipment made by thisfactory.

No. Many repair persons drive around to the cus-tomers in cars and will do the repair work in thecustomers' house. They carry tools and carry partsin the car so that they can replace a broken partright away.

No. If a washing machine or other heavy appli-ance is broken, I will call the shop and have themcome out and fix it in my home.

1. Why must a repair person get special training?

A repair person must learn how to use tools,must learn how to find out what is wrong withan appliance and must learn how to replace abroken part with a correct new one.

2. Besides working with his hands, does a repairperson have to use his mind?

A repair person must think carefully when hefixes things. If he does not use the correctparts, the appliance will not work properly. Itmay damage other parts and it may be dangerousto operate.

The repair person must also be careful not todamage other good parts when he is working andhe must be very careful not to be hurt byelectricity.

3. Must a repair person be friendly?

Yes. When people come to him with broken thingsthey are usually upset, and he must understandand calm them down. He must explain clearlywhat is wrong. If people like the repair person,they will come back again when things break.If they don't like him they will go to anotherrepair person who is more friendly.

4. Why must a repair person keep records?

The repair person must keep records of parts sothat when he uses some in his work he will knowthat he has to get some new ones for the nextcustomer who comes in and needs them.

He must also keep records of what he charges thecustomers for fixing their appliances and thepayments he receives from the customers.

5. Does a small appliance repair person use a ham-mer and a saw?
