Guidelines for the Completion of the Research Proposal

The research proposal is an integral part of any application to conduct research at the Glamorgan Business School and should summarise your intended research as clearly as possible. This proposal will be considered by the research applications panel (RAP), which is comprised of senior academics within the faculty and it is they who will decide whether your application is approved. It is possible for an application to exhibit some flaws but possess sufficient merit for RAP to recommend that the applicant make certain changes, often with help from a nominated member of faculty. In these circumstances it can be possible for applicants to re-submit successfully.

The proposal should be no more than 2,000 words in length. Applicants for the DBA in Public Service Management should consult the additional notes set out at the end of these guidelines.

The suggested structure of the proposal is as follows:

Introduction

This should provide an overview of the research in around 200 words. This is equivalent to an executive summary or abstract.

The introduction should also clearly set out the research question. In other words, what is it that you wish to find out? It is possible to configure this as one over-arching question supported by a number of sub aims, but ‘what you want to find out’ should ideally be expressible in one sentence.

Please note that at doctoral level the question must show good potential for analysis and critique. Questions that seek to ‘look at’ or ‘describe’ a phenomenon are rarely sufficient at this level.

Context

This is where you tell us why your research proposal is interesting and important. This can be thought of in two ways, and your proposal should address both in some detail.

Firstly, you should explain the organisational context. Where will the study be located, in an organisation or across a sector for example? Is the research stimulated by a particular problem or set of issues faced in your organisation or sector?

Secondly, you need to make clear the academic field(s) that you anticipate locating your research in. Will your study be carried out in relation to theory from the field of leadership, or strategy, or human resource management, or finance, for example? This is important as when you draw your conclusions, you will have to say what contribution your work has made, and by definition, to what field of study.

Methodology and method

How will you answer the question you have set for yourself? What data do you need to answer it and where will you get the data? Tell us where you will access data from. Are there likely to be obstacles to collecting the data you need; for example will your organisation readily support your work?

In addition you need to describe what kind of data you will require to answer your question, and this leads into considerations of methods. How will you collect and analyse the data? This might be through questionnaires and statistical analysis, or interviews and subsequent analysis of language used for example. The basic research question you have set yourself needs to inform what type of data you need.

We do not expect you to show yourself to be an expert in research methods here, although you may have previous experience of carrying out research, perhaps for your Masters degree. However, a basic awareness of the strengths and weaknesses of different types of data (qualitative versus quantitative for example) will be necessary.

Research Management

Please indicate a broad timetable for the stages of your research study. When will you collect data, or when do you envisage conducting a literature review for example? It is important that you show awareness of the commitment implicit in undertaking doctoral level study.

It should be noted of course that in the case of the DBA awards, the timetable for completion of the various stages is quite closely prescribed.

In this section you should also mention issues of confidentiality or ethics that are implicit in your research.

References

You should have used some references to academic literature in your contextualisation of your research, and these should be set out here. Similarly you may have quoted statistics or facts from industry or government studies, and where possible these should also be listed here. It is important that sources are acknowledged.

Additional Guidelines for applicants for the DBA in Public Services Management

In addition to the guidelines above, applicants for the DBA PSM should provide two further pieces of information.

Firstly, indications should be given of the sources of funding for the DBA PSM. Bursaries are available to support this programme of study from PSMW/NLIAH and will contribute some 50% of the costs for the three year period encompassing the taught element of the programme. All additional costs above 50% and beyond this period will be borne by the individual or sponsor. To be clear, the bulk of the fees fall within the three year period. If students take beyond this time to finish their work then a writing-up fee (currently £700) may be charged.

Secondly, to be eligible to receive a bursary for this programme, DBA PSM applicants will need to demonstrate in their proposals how the research will contribute to the Wales public services transformation/improvement agenda, as featured in Making the Connections, Beyond Boundaries and One Wales.
