FACULTY ACTIVITIES : Dr. Tony Boudreaux published “Community and Ritual within the Mississippian Center at Town Creek,” in American Antiquity. Luci Fernandes published “Representing the Revolution: Public History and the Moncada Barricks in Santiago de Cuba” with Anita Waters in the Canadian Journal of Latin American and Canadian Studies. Dr. David Griffith published a short story, “Blight,” in the Summer issue of Georgia Review. Dr. Holly Mathews presented a paper, “Trajectories of Biocitizenship in the Experience of Breast Cancer,” at a joint meeting of the Society for Medical Anthropology and the European Society for Social Anthropology in Tarragona, Spain. Dr. Christine Avenarius published “What Do Patrons Really Do in Music Libraries” with David Hursh in Music Reference Services Quarterly. She also gave lectures this summer at the University of Hamburg, University of Frankfurt, and the University of Zürich about research on the social networks of Chinese traders in Nambibia. STUDENT ACTIVITIES: MA Student, Taryn Ricciardelli, received the Whitney Graham Award from the NC Archaeological Society for $500 to fund her thesis research on archaeological settlement patterns in the Piedmont of NC. MA Student, Jessica Handloff, presented a poster, “Exploring the Cultural Influences and Moral Experiences behind Mental Illness Stigma in the US Army,” to NC state legislators at Graduate SEPTEMBER, 2013 VOL 2 ISSUE 1 David Griffith, Professor of Anthropology and Acting Director of the Institute for Coastal Science and Policy, was selected as the Distinguished Professor for the Harriott College of Arts and Sciences. Undergraduate students Krista Benbow, Devon Patterson, Amal Hjouj, and Julia Muller studied in Grenada, Spain, this past summer while Chelsea Cullen studied in India. Stormy DeLucia is spending the fall semester studying anthropology at the University of Olou, Finland.

David Griffith, Professor of Anthropology and Acting Director of the Institute for Coastal Science and Policy, was selected as the Distinguished Professor for the Harriott College of Arts and Sciences. Dr. Griffith is recognized for his research on the economic effects of labor migration and for his work on the decline of fisheries and the impacts on coastal communities.
