IEEE Report

• Set up 5/21/99 Meeting Loughry/Ellis• Objective: “Don Loughry, who is Director of IEEE-SA Standards. Don

is on an IEEE marketing fact finding mission on how to improve the value of IEEE standards to the industry and would like your comments on how Bluetooth was formed and what are your key care-abouts. In addition, I want Don to be familiar on what you are looking for from the IEEE on the Bluetooth interaction.”

• In particular, Don is trying to understand:– 1) What consortiums view as their strategic advantages?– 2) What the IEEE-SA needs to do to be receptive to consortium? There are

several plans in place to create a better environment where the features of a consortium could be mirrored into the IEEE-SA standards process.

– 3) How you see Bluetooth-IEEE 802.15 relationship and what IEEE could do so that you can see very clear values within the IEEE Consensus process.

IEEE 802 Report

• IEEE P802.15 PAR• Set up 4/16/99 Meeting Carlo/Kardach• Objective: Clarify Liaison E-Mails, discuss how to...• Notes: Jim Carlo & Jim Kardach met on 4/16 and had a good meeting.

– 1) The SIGs IPR question revolves around the v1.0 Royalty Free position vs. an 802.15 "L2CAP and Below" MAC & PHY Layer...does or will the Royalty Free flow to the 802.15 version? Carlo to hand-off to IEEE and Intel Lawyers to resolve.

– 2) Assuming (1) gets resolved to the positive the BT SIG WILL forward as-is L2CAP and Below for editing to IEEE Format - Carlo said Siep and a four others (both BT & IEEE) should be tasked to draft into a standards format...and submit into WPAN CFP Process…

– 3) BT SIG continues to be interested in having the IEEE generate Conformance Test Specifications. Carlo has changed our 30% Las Vegas odds to something higher...

DoT FHWA ITS DSRC Report

Jim Carlo 5/1/99 wrote:

• “2) Regarding the projects for FHWA and Intelligent Transportation Systems, I have heard of a need for profiles and test cases to be developed for ITS. There are several wireless projects within 802 that might be applicable, particularly 802.15 (WPANS, which is a 10meter wireless LAN that has applications for toll taking and vehicle connection).”

• “Regarding item 2), I have copied this note to Bob Heile, chair of 802.15. Suggest you work with him on this. As always, someone from a company with a financial product motive, needs to see the value here. This person would need to attend the 802.15 meeting and see how what is being developed there could be applicable. Alternatively, we could arrange for a seminar on 802.15 to be given at an FHWA or ITS meeting.”

The USA Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) and more specifically the Dedicated Short Range Communications (DSRC) will be at 5850-5925MHz.

Motorola - Piano

• Motorola is working within the SIG to add the Piano "service discovery" architecture to the Bluetooth specification. Motorola also plans to make the Piano software widely available to software and application developers as an open specification.

• "Like Jini, we see the Piano technology as an enabling platform," says David Leeper, Vice President of Technical Staff and Director of Personal Area Networking, Motorola Internet Connectivity Solutions Group (ING).

During the July 1998 IEEE 802 Plenary Rich Ditch from Motorola presented Piano to the SG ref: doc.: IEEE 802.11-98/252

Sun - Jini

• A Jini system is a Java™-centric distributed system designed for simplicity, flexibility, and federation. The Jini architecture provides mechanisms for machines or programs to enter into a federation where each machine or program offers resources to other members of the federation and uses resources as needed. The design of the Jini architecture exploits the ability to move Java language code from machine to machine and unifies under the notion of a service everything from the user of a Jini system to the software available on the machines to the hardware components of the machines themselves.

• The heart of the Jini system is a pair protocols called discovery and lookup, which occur at different times. Discovery occurs when a service joins a Jini lookup service, for example, when a device is plugged in; lookup occurs when a client or user needs to locate and invoke a service described by its attributes and possibly, other attributes.

Observation #2

• The IETF (MobileIP WG) is starting to receive Ad Hoc Network requests

Date: Mon, 3 May 1999 18:35:43 +0200

From: Thomas Eklund <[email protected]>

Subject: Re: FW: Draft new charter for mobile IP

To: [email protected]

I do NOT agreee....

I would like to add this on the mobile IP charter as:

- Define interoperability between the ad hoc network routing protocol and

mobile IPv4/v6

And that is a very logical thing to do when we are speaking about mobile

routers (i.e. cellular phone with a n IP stack) because they will have

bluetooth interfaces and it would be nice to have this work include in the

charter...

Lloyd asks if the Mobile-IP group is covering Ad Hoc networks.

I will remind people that there is a separate working group focussed

specifically on AdHoc and extremely dynamic networks. Please, let them do

their work, and keep Mobile-IP focussed on its work.

Yours,
