“Nigel House? It sounds like a residential home”

I’m Nigel House - and so is a hotel in Margate. To avoid confusion this presentation tells you a little about my current and previous employment and serves as a brief introduction to me.It tells you nothing about a hotel in Margate.

I live in Bristol and I’m seeking employment within the city. I can walk about 2 miles to work, but am otherwise reliant on public transport. Fortunately I live near central Bristol and have no problem with catching buses.

Do you want Nigel House on your team?“What kind of work are you looking for?”

I would like to find a job that enables me to combine the most enjoyable elements from previous jobs.

I have excellent intrapersonal skills and enjoy building a rapport with customers or clients either directly or by providing telephone support – I am naturally sociable, but I can apply myself equally well when working independently as I can when I work in a team.

I want a job with sufficient variety to make it interesting and I am not averse to getting my hands dirty in what might otherwise be a desk job. I look forward to duties like carrying and cleaning that break up the day.

I am fluent in the use of the Microsoft Office applications such as Word, Access and Excel and enjoy using computers to their utmost. I can type at 35wpm error free.

“What is your current job?”I am a front-line Agent on a Technical Help-desk, for business customers experiencing problems with their BT broadband connection. My training, combined with a range of in-house software applications and specialist support desks help me to find solutions.

My interpersonal skills allow me to quickly take control of a call and to proceed with finding a resolution without having to renege on empathy with the customer or an understanding of the problem. There are however performance targets and records to be kept of the calls and diagnostics procedures, which means we are busy multitaskers.

I may liaise with other departments or access a customer's PC remotely (with their consent) which requires an understanding of The Data Protection Act and a requirement to follow security protocols.

I currently work flexible hours (between 7am and 11pm).

Do you want Nigel House on your team? “…and before that?”

I had a temporary job at Bristol City Council’s Home Care Business Unit as an administration assistant from January 2005 until the end of the financial year.

My work with a Home Care Team included updating Home Care assistants of changes in their normal schedule and corresponding with Social Services and other outside agencies. It also involved reception work and general office duties such as filing, photocopying and faxing.

Other work included:

•issuing sickness forms, holiday forms & mileage claim forms •checking returned claims and adjusting holiday entitlements•forwarding completed forms to appropriate departments

“…and before that?”

I worked for a computer retail and repair business called Azzta computers in 2003 and 2004, where I greatly improved my working knowledge of computers.

My role there was undefined and unlimited and I was able to wear many hats as one has to in a small business.

I was managing the Bedminster store (‘Database’) after 3 months, being key-holder, doing the daily cashing up, ordering stock and being both the the salesman and cleaner.

I got involved in stock control, proof-reading and redesigning the shop’s forms I also initiated changes in the stock room management enabling deliveries to be received faster and the products more easily accessed for sale.

“Have you combined administrative and sales duties in your work before?”

Yes. I worked in the sales office of The SOFA Project (a charity affiliated with the Furniture Re-use Network) assessing offers to donate furniture, booking collection dates for suitable items and tactfully rejecting those that fell outside existing constraints of the project.

My job was to resolve problems and misunderstandings that arose from late collection or non-delivery of furniture. I also prepared recruitment packs and did general office administration duties.

“So you have got a lot of sales, customer service and admin experience?”

I did similar work as a box-office clerk at the Bristol Hippodrome where I worked for nearly ten years booking and selling theatre tickets by both telephone and at the sales window, during which time computer sales were introduced.

My first job when I left school was as a sales assistant in what was an extremely customer friendly branch of the record retail chain, HMV. I purchased and managed stock for the singles department back when UK singles sales were at their peak.

“You said that people are an important component in the job you are looking for…”

I have always got a lot from the people I work with and hopefully I have similarly enhanced their lives, both clients and colleagues. Some of my best friends nowadays are former customers from my time at HMV and many former Hippodrome staff that I keep in touch with now appreciate the unusually(?) social side to working there.

I have also done a year’s work based training as a Basic Skills tutor in which I tutored a diverse group of adults in the basic skills of Math's, English and Computer literacy. This was enjoyable work that rewards nowadays when a former student recognizes me occasionally and valued the experience as one of the better employment initiatives.

“Have you ever done anything outstanding in the community?”

I am very proud that for ten years I was the ‘Leader in Charge’ of Shirehampton Gateway club, which met once a week to provide a stimulating programme of activities for people with learning difficulties.

I coordinated activities at the centre where we met and organised others that enabled them to integrate socially with the rest of society, such as theatre trips, skittles, meals and karaoke evenings.

I did the club’s administration and paperwork, which included keeping up to date attendance and petty cash records, making annual applications to secure funding for staff, leasing the youth centre where the club met and producing a newsletter on my computer to inform people of forthcoming activities (The Hippodrome kindly allowed me to use their paper and photocopier).

Previously I had worked for mencap on summer play schemes for children with learning difficulties organising activities and supervising volunteers, after which I had worked as a Part-time Youth Worker at St Andrews Methodist Youth Centre in Filton.

“You are not currently working so what are you doing?”

Getting frustrated at not working. I’m strapped for cash and my lifestyle is suffering.

However, if I had been in full time employment I doubt that I would have learned to budget my personal finances so well, learn to cook or to find out as much as I do about computers. I took the initiative to learn about computers and how to use Office software which has put me ahead of most people and I might not have had this opportunity in full time employment.

My computer is currently my main focus of attention for converting my record collection to digital format, learning web building skills and applying for jobs.

I listen to the radio, watch TV, make my own cards, and walk, but I need a regular income to do things that matter to me. That’s why my IT skills are being used to this end – I need a job.
