The Roots of the Genocide○ Home in the Caucasus region of Eurasia for 3000 yr.

○ 4th century AD, Armenia was its an independent entity- but control of the region shifted from one empire to another

○ 5th century AD- Ottoman empire took rule

The Ottoman Empire○ Multi-Cultural & Multi-Racial (Muslim)

○ Greeks, Bulgarians, Armenians, & Jews○ Animosity exists between Turks &

Armenians○ They are different culturally, religiously,

linguistically, historically, and economically

○ More educated/wealthier than Turkish neighbors

1890- Ottoman Empire

○ Turkish Sultan Abdul Hamid II○ Reporter: I will soon settle those Armenians,

I will give them a box on the ear which will make them…relinquish their revolutionary ambitions.”

1908- Turkey

○ 1922- Ended○388,000 remaining in Ottoman Empire
