Confucianism: on respect

People have to warrant the respect and power that comes with their positions in life. Power and respect are not a given, they must be earned.

He believed that if everyone followed the five ideals they would spread through family, community, nation, and the world.

China’s RulerRuled with the Mandate of Heaven

Guidance from the ancestors

Page 13: Do Now

Mandate of Heaven Invaders are moving in from the north – shall we

attack? Winner, winner, chicken dinner!! Our armies

defeated the invaders! Thank you, wise ruler! Our ancestors guide you well.

Our general – Shang Lee – was captured in the fight and has been taken prisoner… shall we follow and rescue him?

Returned! We have our general back and his captors have been killed! Wise ruler, you have done it again.

Rain has been scarce… our harvests are in danger. Wise ruler, will you call upon the ancestors for rain and a good harvest?

Disaster! The crops failed and the people are starving.

The ancestors have spoken – you are our wise ruler, no longer! The heavens doth not guide you – be gone!
