with black and white activists who tried to use segregated facilities.

Effects

• Violence met Freedom Riders throughout the South.

• May 14- a white mob firebombed one of the buses and beat the riders that tried to escape.

• The incident appears on the front page of newspapers around the country.

Federal Intervention

• The federal government forced Alabama’s governor to provide Freedom Riders with police protection.

• The promised protection did not happen.• Federal troops were sent to protect the riders.
