“Satan is . . constantly pressing in thespurious—to lead away from the truth. The verylast deception of Satan will be to make of noneeffect the testimony of the Spirit of God. ‘Wherethere is no vision, the people perish’ (Proverbs29:18). Satan will work ingeniously, in differentways and through different agencies, to unsettlethe confidence of God’s remnant people in thetrue testimony.”

“One stood by my side and said: ‘God has raisedyou up and has given you words to speak to thepeople and to reach hearts as He has given to noother one. He has shaped your testimonies to meetcases that are in need of help. You must be unmovedby scorn, derision, reproach, and censure. In order tobe God’s special instrument you should lean to noone, but hang upon Him alone and, like the clingingvine, let your tendrils entwine about Him. He willmake you a means through which to communicateHis light to the people. You must daily gather strengthfrom God in order to be fortified, that yoursurroundings may not dim or eclipse the light that Hehas permitted to shine upon His people through you.It is Satan’s special object to prevent this light fromcoming to the people of God, who so greatly need itamid the perils of these last days.’ ”

4 Do not Reject the Spirit of Prophecy

There are some among us who say theSpirit of Prophecy should be used for en-couragement, but not for instruction. Theysay it should not be used in the pulpit.Sequeira declares it should not even beused privately to help Advent believers.

The truth is We should not refer to theSpirit of Prophecy as a basis for provingdoctrine to Bible study interests. But, af-ter they come into the faith, we very defi-nitely are to study and share it with oneanother, on all levels of communication.

Yet the Spirit of Prophecy writingsshould be freely given to unbelievers, andthey should be encouraged to study them.

“In ancient times God spoke to men bythe mouth of prophets and apostles. Inthese days He speaks to them by the testi-monies of His Spirit. There was never atime when God instructed His peoplemore earnestly than He instructs themnow concerning His will and the coursethat He would have them pursue.”—4Testimonies, 147-148.

“The first number of the Testimoniesever published contains a warning againstthe injudicious use of the light which isthus given to God’s people. I stated thatsome had taken an unwise course; whenthey had talked their faith to unbelievers, and the proof had been asked for, they had

read from my writings instead of going tothe Bible for proof. It was shown me thatthis course was inconsistent and wouldprejudice unbelievers against the truth. The Testimonies can have no weight withthose who know nothing of their spirit. They should not be referred to in suchcases.”—5 Testimonies, 669.

“There are matters in the Testimoniesthat are written, not for the world at large, but for the believing children of God, andit is not appropriate to make instruction, warning, reproof, or counsel of this char-acter public to the world. The world’s Re-deemer, the Sent of God, the greatestTeacher the children of men ever knew, presented some matters of instruction, notto the world, but to His disciples alone . .He also had some special light and instruc-tion to impart to His followers which Hedid not impart to the great congregation,as it would neither be understood nor ap-preciated by them . . The Lord Jesusthought it necessary to make many thingsclear to His disciples which He did notopen to the multitudes.”—Testimonies toMinisters, 34-35.

“Some have taken an injudiciouscourse; they have talked their faith to un-believers, and when the proof has beenasked for, they have read a vision, insteadof going to the Bible for proof. I saw that

5this course was inconsistent, and preju-diced unbelievers against the truth. Thevisions can have no weight with those whohave never seen them and know nothingof their spirit. They should not be referredto in such cases.”—1 Testimonies, 119-120.

“[In his evangelistic meetings] Elder __enters into no controversy with opponents. He presents the Bible so clearly that it isevident that anyone who differs must doso in opposition to the Word of God.

“Friday evening and Sabbath forenoonhe spoke upon the subject of spiritual gifts, dwelling especially upon the Spirit ofProphecy. Those who were present at thesediscourses say that he treated the subjectin a clear, forceful manner.”—Evangelism,257 (1906).

“In his teaching Elder __ showed thatthe Spirit of Prophecy has an importantpart to act in the establishment of the truth. When binding off his work, he called forme . . to speak to the people.”—Evange-lism, 257 (1906).

“The volumes of Spirit of Prophecyshould be in every family, and should beread aloud in the family circle . . The Tes-

timonies contain instruction which meetsthe case of all, both parents and chil-dren.”—Sons and Daughters of God, 178.

“Parents, your children are in dangerof going contrary to the light given ofheaven, and you should both purchase andread the books, for they will be a blessingto you and yours. You should lend Spiritof Prophecy to your neighbors and prevailupon them to buy copies for themselves . .Many are going directly contrary to the lightwhich God has given to His people, be-cause they do not read the books whichcontain the light and knowledge in cau-tions, reproofs, and warnings.”—4 Testi-monies, 391.

“If you really believe that the voice ofGod has spoken to you, pointing out yourdangers, do you heed the counsels given?Do you keep these testimonies of warningfresh in your minds by reading them oftenwith prayerful hearts? . . You will be heldaccountable for every one of these appealsand warnings. ”—3 Testimonies, 362-363.

“Do all you can to have my writingsplaced in the hands of the people in for-eign lands.”—Fundamentals of ChristianEducation, 549.

What is the Spirit of Prophecy for?

“There will be a hatred kindled against thetestimonies which is satanic. The workings ofSatan will be to unsettle the faith of the churchesin them, for this reason: Satan cannot have soclear a track to bring in his deceptions and bindup souls in his delusions if the warnings andreproofs and counsels of the Spirit of God areheeded.”

6 Do not Reject the Spirit of Prophecy

How were we given ourdoctrinal positions?

We initially received our Sanctuary po-sitions from William Miller, which weremodified and clarified by Samuel Snowand Hiram Edson. Joseph Bates broughtus the Sabbath message, and we receivedthe Spirit of Prophecy through Ellen White.

In 1848, the Sabbath conferences oc-curred, during which time a number of ourpioneers reviewed and studied, in detail, into all our doctrinal positions.

However, it was easy for them to be-come misled. Had not all the religiousgroups before them developed doctrinalerrors?

But Ellen White was present; and, asthe group would go as far as they could instudy, she would be taken off in vision andreceive the correct interpretations.

Our people studied as earnestly as theycould in the Bible, but each time they werebeginning to veer off into error. Ellen Whitewas given a vision to correct them. It isclear that, without the Spirit of Prophecy,we would not have our present doctrinaltruths.

So that none of the group might thinkthat these were merely the opinions ofEllen White, God arranged matters so thatshe could not grasp any scriptural or doc-trinal truths during this entire time. Thiswas quite obvious to all, so they were will-ing to accept the light she brought themfrom each vision as from God. In addition,

of course, it would have been impossibleto counterfeit the visions, themselves (nobreathing for half an hour or so, etc.),which would occur in the presence of theentire group.

The best clarification of this is given in1 Selected Messages, 206:4-208:2. Addi-tional details will be found in 5 Testimo-nies, 655:4-656:0; Testimonies to Minis-ters, 24-26; and Gospel Workers, 302:2-3. All of these passages are quoted below:

“Many of our people do not realizehow firmly the foundation of our faithhas been laid. My husband, Elder JosephBates, Father Pierce, Elder [Hiram] Edson, and others who are keen, noble, and true, were among those who, after the passingof the time in 1884, searched for the truthas for hidden treasure. I met with them, and we studied and prayed earnestly. Of-ten we remained together until late at night, and sometimes through the entire night, praying for light and studing the Word.Again and again these brethren came to-gether to study the Bible, in order that theymight know its meaning, and be preparedto teach it with power. When they cameto the point in their study where theysaid, “We can do nothing more,” theSpirit of the Lord would come upon me,I would be taken off in vision, and a clearexplanation of the passages we had been

7studying would be given me, with instruc-tion as to how we were to labor and teacheffectively. Thus the light was given thathelped us to understand the scriptures inregard to Christ, His mission, and Hispriesthood. A light of truth, extendingfrom that time to the time when we shallenter the city of God, was made plain tome, and I gave to others the instructionthat the Lord had given me.

“During this whole time I could not un-derstand the reasoning of the brethren. Mymind was locked, as it were, and I couldnot comprehend the meaning of the scrip-tures we were studying. This was one ofthe greatest sorrows of my life. I was inthis condition of mind until all the prin-ciple points of our faith were made clearto our minds, in harmony with the Wordof God. The brethren knew that when notin vision, I could not understand thesematters, and they accepted as light directfrom heaven the revelations given.

“For two or three years my mind con-tinued to be locked to an understandingof the Scriptures. In the course of our la-bors, my husband and I visited FatherAndrews [J.N. Andrews’ father], who wassuffering intensely with inflammatory rheu-matism. We prayed for him. I laid myhands on his head, and said, “FatherAndrews, the Lord Jesus maketh thewhole.” He was healed instantly. He got up,and walked around the room, praisingGod, and saying, ‘I never saw it on this wisebefore. Angels of God are in this room. Theglory of the Lord was revealed. Lightseemed to shine all through the house, andan angel’s hand was laid upon my head. From that time to this I have been able tounderstand the Word of God.’

“What influence is it that would leadmen at this stage of our history to work inan underhand, powerful way to tear downthe foundation of our faith—the founda-tion that was laid at the beginning of our

work by prayerful study of the Word andby revelation? Upon this foundation wehave been building for the past fifty years.Do you wonder that when I see the be-ginning of a work that would removesome of the pillars of our faith, I havesomething to say? I must obey the com-mand, ‘Meet it?’ . .

“I must bear the messages of warningthat God gives me to bear, and then leavewith the Lord the results. I must nowpresent the matter in all its bearings; forthe people of God must not be despoiled.

“We are God’s commandment-keepingpeople. For the past fifty years everyphase of heresy has been brought to bearupon us, to becloud our minds regard-ing the teaching of the Word—especiallyconcerning the ministration of Christ inthe heavenly sanctuary, and the messageof Heaven for these last days, as given bythe angel of the fourteenth chapter of Rev-elation. Messages of every order and havebeen urged upon Seventh-day Adventists,to take the place of the truth which, pointby point has been sought out by prayerfulstudy and testified to by the miracle-work-ing power of the Lord. But the waymarkswhich have made us what we are, are tobe preserved, and they will be preserved,as God has signified through His Wordand the testimony of His Spirit. He callsupon us to hold firmly, with the grip offaith, to the fundamental principles thatare based upon unquestionable author-ity.”—1 Selected Messages, 206-208.

“My husband, with Elders JosephBates, Stephen Pierce, Hiram Edson, andothers who were keen, noble, and true, wasamong those who, after the passing of thetime in 1844, searched for the truth as forhidden treasure.

“We would come together burdened insoul, praying that we might be one in faithand doctrine; for we knew that Christ isnot divided. One point at a time was made

8 Do not Reject the Spirit of Prophecythe subject of investigation. The Scriptureswere opened with a sense of awe. Often wefasted, that we might be better fitted tounderstand truth. After earnest prayer, ifany point was not understood it was dis-cussed, and each one expressed his opin-ion freely; then we would again bow inprayer, and earnest supplications went upto heaven that God would help us to seeeye to eye, that we might be one as Christand the Father are one. Many tears wereshed.

“We spent many hours in this way.Sometimes the entire night was spent insolemn investigation of the Scriptures, thatwe might understand the truth for ourtime. On some occasions the Spirit of Godwould come upon me, and difficult por-tions were made clear through God’s ap-pointed way, and then there was perfectharmony. We were all of one mind and onespirit.

“We sought most earnestly that theScriptures should not be wrested to suitany man’s opinions. We tried to make ourdifferences as slight as possible by notdwelling on points that were of minor im-portance, upon which there were varyingopinions. But the burden of every soul wasto bring about a condition among thebrethren which would answer the prayerof Christ that His disciples might be oneas He and the Father are one.

“Sometimes one or two of the brethrenwould stubbornly set themselves againstthe view presented, and would act out thenatural feelings of the heart; but when thisdisposition appeared, we suspended ourinvestigations and adjourned our meeting, that each one might have an opportunityto go to God in prayer, and, without con-versation with others, study the point ofdifference, asking light from heaven. Withexpressions of friendliness we parted, tomeet again as soon as possible for furtherinvestigation. At times the power of God

came upon us in a marked manner, andwhen clear light revealed the points oftruth, we would weep and rejoice to-gether. We loved Jesus; we loved one an-other.”—Testimonies to Ministers, 24-26.

“At this time there was fanaticism amongsome of those who had been believers inthe first message. Serious errors in doc-trine and practice were cherished, andsome were ready to condemn all whowould not accept their views. God revealedthese errors to me in vision and sentme to His erring children to declarethem; but in performing this duty I metwith bitter opposition and reproach.”—5Testimonies, 655-656.

“We are to be established in the faith,in the light of the truth given us in our ear-lier experience. At that time one error af-ter another pressed in upon us; ministersand doctors brought in new doctrines. Wewould search the Scriptures with muchprayer, and the Holy Spirit would bring thetruth to our minds. Sometimes wholenights would be devoted to searching theScriptures, and earnestly asking God forguidance. Companies of devoted men andwomen assembled for this purpose. Thepower of God would come upon me, andI was enabled clearly to define what istruth and what is error.

“As the points of our faith were thusestablished, our feet were placed upona solid foundation. We accepted thetruth point by point, under the demon-stration of the Holy Spirit. I would betaken off in vision, and explanationswould be given me. I was given illustra-tions of heavenly things, and of the sanc-tuary, so that we were placed where lightwas shining on us in clear, distinct rays.

“I know that the sanctuary questionstands in righteousness and truth, justas we have held it for so many years. Itis the enemy that leads minds off onside-tracks. He is pleased when those

9who know the truth become engrossedin collecting scriptures to pile arounderroneous theories, which have no foun-dation in truth. The scriptures thus usedare misapplied; they were not given to sub-stantiate error, but to strengthen truth.”—Gospel Workers, 302-303.

“Let the truths that are the founda-tion of our faith be kept before thepeople. Some will depart from the faith, giving heed to seducing spirits and doc-trines of devils. They talk science, and theenemy comes in and gives them an abun-dance of science; but it is not the scienceof salvation. It is not the science of humil-ity, of consecration, or of the sanctificationof the Spirit. We are now to understandwhat the pillars of our faith are,—thetruths that have made us as a peoplewhat we are, leading us on step bystep.”—Review, May 25, 1905; Counselsto Writers and Editors, 29.

“The searching testimony of the Spiritof God ‘will separate those from Israel whohave ever been at war with the means that

God has ordained to keep corruptions outof the church. Wrongs must be calledwrongs. Grievous sins must be called bytheir right name. All of God’s peopleshould come nearer to Him . . Then willthey see sin in the true light and will real-ize how offensive it is in the sight of God”—5 Testimonies, 676.

“The plain, straight testimony mustlive in the church, or the curse of Godwill rest upon His people as surely as itdid upon ancient Israel because of theirsins.”—3 Testimonies, 269.

“Never was there greater need of faith-ful warnings and reproofs . . than at thisvery time. Satan has come down with greatpower, knowing that his time is short. Heis flooding the world with pleasingfables, and the people of God love tohave smooth things spoken to them . . Iwas shown that God’s people must makemore firm, determined efforts to pressback the incoming darkness. The closework of the Spirit of God is needed nowas never before.”—3 Testimonies, 327-328.

“We are not to receive the words of those whocome with a message that contradicts the specialpoints of our faith.”

—Counsels to Writers and Editors, 32

“The track of truth lies close beside the track oferror, and both tracks may seem to be one tominds which are not worked by the Holy Spirit.”

1 0 Do not Reject the Spirit of Prophecy

If ever I have pled with you, please con-sider the following messages. If you willhumble your heart before God in prayer, and ask that He might teach you your workfor this time,—and then, in humility of alearner, read the following gleanings fromGod’s Word,—I assure you the Holy Spiritwill move on your heart and set you on anew course of dedication, a deeper studyof His holy Word, and an intensified deter-mination to please Him in every way. —vf

“In ancient times God spoke to men bythe mouth of prophets and apostles. Inthese days He speaks to them by the Tes-timonies of His Spirit. There was never atime when God instructed His peoplemore earnestly than He instructs themnow concerning His will and the coursethat He would have them pursue.”—4Testimonies, 147-148.

“God is either teaching His church, re-proving their wrongs and strengtheningtheir faith, or He is not. This work is ofGod, or it is not. God does nothing inpartnership with Satan. My work . . bearsthe stamp of God or the stamp of theenemy. There is no halfway work in thematter.”—5 Testimonies, 671.

“As the Lord has manifested Himselfthrough the spirit of prophecy, past, present, and future have passed before me.I have been shown faces that I had neverseen, and years afterward I knew themwhen I saw them. I have been aroused frommy sleep with a vivid sense of subjects pre-

viously presented to my mind; and I havewritten, at midnight, letters that have goneacross the continent and, arriving at a cri-sis, have saved great disaster to the causeof God. This has been my work for manyyears. A power has impelled me to reproveand rebuke wrongs that I had not thoughtof. Is this work of the last thirty-six yearsfrom above or from beneath?”—5 Testimo-nies, 671.

“If you lose confidence in the Testi-monies you will drift away from Bibletruth. I have been fearful that many wouldtake a questioning, doubting position, andin my distress for your souls I would warnyou. How many will heed the warning? Asyou now hold the Testimonies, should onebe given crossing your track, correctingyour errors, would you feel at perfect lib-erty to accept or reject any part or thewhole? That which you will be least in-clined to receive is the very part mostneeded.”—5 Testimonies, 98.

“As the end draws near, and the workof giving the last warning to the world ex-tends, it becomes more important forthose who accept present truth to have asclear understanding of the nature and in-fluence of the Testimonies, which God inHis providence has linked with the workof the third angel’s message from its veryrise.”—5 Testimonies, 654.

“A wealth of moral influence has beenbrought to us in the last half century.Through His Holy Spirit the voice of Godhas come to us continually in warning and

1 1instruction, to confirm the faith of the be-lievers in the Spirit of prophecy. Repeat-edly the word has come, Write the thingsthat I have given you to confirm the faithof My people in the position they havetaken. Time and trial have not made voidthe instruction given, but through yearsof suffering and self-sacrifice have estab-lished the truth of the testimony given. Theinstruction that was given in the earlydays of the message is to be held as safeinstruction to follow in these its closingdays. Those who are indifferent to thislight and instruction must not expect toescape the snares which we have beenplainly told will cause the rejecters oflight to stumble, and fall, and be snared, and be taken. If we study carefully the sec-ond chapter of Hebrews, we shall learnhow important it is that we hold steadfastlyto every principle of truth that has beengiven.”—1 Selected Messages, 41.

“It is Satan’s plan to weaken the faithof God’s people in the Testimonies. Sa-tan knows how to make his attacks . . Thegifts are next questioned; then, of course, they have but little weight, and instructiongiven through vision is disregarded.”—5Testimonies, 672.

“Next follows skepticism in regard tothe vital points of our faith, the pillars ofour position, then doubt as to the HolyScriptures, and then the downwardmarch to perdition. When the Testimo-nies, which were once believed, aredoubted and given up, Satan knows thedeceived ones will not stop at this; and heredoubles his efforts till he launches theminto open rebellion, which becomes incur-able and ends in destruction.”—4 Testi-monies, 211.

“I was shown that many had so littlespirituality that they did not understandthe value of the Testimonies or their realobject. They talked flippantly of the Tes-

timonies given by God for the benefit ofHis people, and passed judgment uponthem, giving their opinion and criticiz-ing this and that, when they would bet-ter have placed their hands upon theirlips, and prostrated themselves in thedust; for they could not appreciate thespirit of the Testimonies, because theyknew so little of the Spirit of God.”—5 Tes-timonies, 672-673.

“God sets no man to pronounce judg-ment on His Word, selecting some thingsas inspired and discrediting others asuninspired. The testimonies have beentreated in the same way; but God is not inthis.”—1 Selected Messages, 23.

“There are some in __ who have neverfully submitted to reproof. They have takena course of their own choosing. They haveever, to a greater or less degree, exertedan influence against those who havestood up to defend the right and reprovethe wrong. The influence of these personsupon individuals who come here and whoare brought in contact with them . . is verybad. They fill the minds of these new-comers with questionings and doubts inregard to the Testimonies of the Spiritof God. They put false constructions uponthe Testimonies.”—4 Testimonies, 513-514.

Some are unconscious of the harm theyare doing; but, unconsecrated, proud, andrebellious themselves, they lead others inthe wrong track. A poisonous atmosphereis inhaled from these unconsecrated ones. The blood of souls is in the garments ofsuch, and Christ will say to them in theday of final settlement: ‘Depart from Me,all ye workers of iniquity.’ Astonished theywill be, but their professedly Christian liveswere a deception, a fraud.

“Some express their views that the tes-timony of Sister White cannot be reliable. This is all that many unconsecrated ones

1 2 Do not Reject the Spirit of Prophecywant. The testimonies of reproof havechecked their vanity and pride; but if theydared, they would go to almost any lengthin fashion and pride. God will give allsuch an opportunity to prove themselvesand to develop their true characters.”—5 Testimonies, 673.

“I am sorry for my brethren who havebeen walking in the mist of suspicion andskepticism and false reasoning. I know thatsome of them would be blessed by mes-sages of counsel if the clouds obscuringtheir spiritual vision could be driven back, and they could see aright. But they do notsee clearly. Therefore I dare not com-municate with them. When the Spirit ofGod clears away the mysticism, there willbe found just as complete comfort and faithand hope in the messages that I have beeninstructed to give, as were found in themin years past.”—1 Selected Messages, 30.

“I saw that the reason why visions hadnot been more frequent of late is, they havenot been appreciated by the church. Thechurch have nearly lost their spiritual-ity and faith, and the reproofs and warn-ings have had but little effect upon them. Many of those who have professed faithin them have not heeded them.”—1 Tes-timonies, 119.

“My brethren, beware of the evil heartof unbelief. The word of God is plain andclose in its restrictions; it interferes withyour selfish indulgence; therefore youdo not obey it. The Testimonies of HisSpirit call your attention to the Scriptures, point out your defects of character, and re-buke your sins; therefore you do not heedthem. And to justify your carnal, ease-loving course you begin to doubtwhether the Testimonies are from God.If you would obey their teachings youwould be assured of their divine origin.Remember, your unbelief does not affecttheir truthfulness. If they are from God

they will stand.”—5 Testimonies, 234.

“I have been shown that unbelief in thetestimonies of warning, encouragement, and reproof is shutting away the lightfrom God’s people. Unbelief is closingtheir eyes so that they are ignorant of theirtrue condition.”—5 Testimonies, 674.

“They think the testimony of theSpirit of God in reproof is uncalled foror that it does not mean them. Such arein the greatest need of the grace of Godand spiritual discernment, that they maydiscover their deficiency in spiritual knowl-edge.”—3 Testimonies, 253-254.

“Many who have backslidden from thetruth assign as a reason for their coursethat they do not have faith in the Testimo-nies . . The question now is: Will they yieldtheir idol which God condemns, or willthey continue in their wrong course of in-dulgence and reject the light God has giventhem reproving the very things in whichthey delight? The question to be settledwith them is: Shall I deny myself andreceive as of God the Testimonies whichreprove my sins, or shall I reject the Tes-timonies because they reprove mysins?”—4 Testimonies, 31-32.

“Satan has ability to suggest doubtsand to devise objections to the pointedtestimony that God sends, and manythink it a virtue, a mark of intelligence inthem, to be unbelieving and to questionand quibble. Those who desire to doubtwill have plenty of room. God does notpropose to remove all occasion for un-belief. He gives evidence, which must becarefully investigated with a humble mindand a teachable spirit, and all should de-cide from the weight of evidence.”—3 Tes-timonies, 255.

“God gives sufficient evidence for thecandid mind to believe; but he who turnsfrom the weight of evidence because thereare a few things which he cannot make

1 3plain to his finite understanding will be leftin the cold, chilling atmosphere of unbe-lief and questioning doubts, and will makeshipwreck of faith.”—4 Testimonies, 232-233.

“Soon every possible effort will bemade to discount and pervert the truthof the testimonies of God’s Spirit. Wemust have in readiness the clear, straightmessages that since 1846 have been com-ing to God’s people.

“There will be those once united withus in the faith who will search for new, strange doctrines, for something odd andsensational to present to the people. Theywill bring in all conceivable fallacies, and will present them as coming fromMrs. White, that they may beguilesouls.”—1 Selected Messages, 41.

“Let none entertain the thought that Iregret or take back any plain testimony Ihave borne to individuals or to the people. If I have erred anywhere, it is in not re-buking sin more decidedly and firmly. Some of the brethren have taken the re-sponsibility of criticizing my work andproposing an easier way to correctwrongs. To these persons I would say: Itake God’s way and not yours. What Ihave said or written in testimony or re-proof has not been too plainly expressed ..

“Those who would in any way lessenthe force of the sharp reproofs whichGod has given me to speak must meettheir work at the judgment . . To thosewho have taken the responsibility to re-prove me and, in their finite judgment, topropose a way which appears wiser tothem I repeat: I do not accept your efforts.Leave me with God, and let Him teach me.I will take the words from the Lord andspeak them to the people. I do not ex-pect that all will accept the reproof andreform their lives, but I must discharge my

duty all the same. I will walk in humilitybefore God, doing my work for time andfor eternity.”—5 Testimonies, 19-20.

“These words were spoken to me: ‘Yourwork is appointed you of God. Many willnot hear you, for they refused to hear theGreat Teacher; many will not be cor-rected, for their ways are right in theirown eyes. Yet bear to them the reproofsand warnings I shall give you, whether theywill hear or forbear.’ ”—1 Selected Mes-sages, 29.

“Many now despise the faithful reproofgiven of God in testimony. I have beenshown that some in these days have evengone so far as to burn the written wordsof rebuke and warning, as did the wickedking of Israel. But opposition to God’sthreatenings will not hinder their execu-tion. To defy the words of the Lord, spo-ken through His chosen instruments, will only provoke His anger and eventu-ally bring certain ruin upon the of-fender.”—4 Testimonies, 180.

“From the beginning of my work, as Ihave been called to bear a plain, pointedtestimony, to reprove wrongs, and to sparenot, there have been those who havestood in opposition to my testimony andhave followed after to speak smooththings, to daub with untempered mortar, and to destroy the influence of my labors. The Lord would move upon me to bearreproof, and then individuals would stepin between me and the people to make mytestimony of no effect.”—5 Testimonies,678-679.

“There are some in these last dayswho will cry: ‘Speak unto us smooththings, prophesy deceits.’ But this is notmy work. God has set me as a reprover ofHis people; and just so surely as He haslaid upon me the heavy burden, He willmake those to whom this message is givenresponsible for the manner in which they

“If God has given me a message to bearto His people, those who would hinderme in the work and lessen the faith ofthe people in its truth are not fightingagainst the instrument, but againstGod.”—5 Testimonies, 680.

“It is not the instrument whom youslight and insult, but God, who has spo-ken to you in these warnings and re-proofs. It is hardly possible for men to of-fer a greater insult to God than to despiseand reject the instrumentalities that He hasappointed to lead them.”—5 Testimonies,680.

“Some of you in words acknowledge re-proof, but you do not in heart accept it.You go on the same as before, only beingless susceptible to the influence of theSpirit of God, becoming more and moreblinded, having less wisdom, less self-con-trol, less moral power, and less zeal andrelish for religious exercises; and, unlessconverted, you will finally yield your holdupon God entirely. You have not madedecided changes in your life when re-proof has come, because you have notseen and realized your defects of char-acter and the great contrast between yourlife and the life of Christ. What do yourprayers amount to while you regard iniq-uity in your hearts? Unless you make athorough change, you will, not far hence, become weary of reproof, as did the chil-dren of Israel; and, like them, you willapostatize from God.”—5 Testimonies,680.

“Many are going directly contrary tothe light which God has given to Hispeople, because they do not read thebooks which contain the light and knowl-edge in cautions, reproofs, and warnings.

The cares of the world, the love of fashion, and the lack of religion have turned theattention from the light God has so gra-ciously given, while books and periodicalscontaining error are traveling all over thecountry. Skepticism and infidelity are in-creasing everywhere. Light so precious, coming from the throne of God, is hidunder a bushel. God will make Hispeople responsible for this neglect. Anaccount must be rendered to Him for ev-ery ray of light He has let shine upon ourpathway, whether it has been improved toour advancement in divine things or re-jected because it was more agreeable tofollow inclination.”—4 Testimonies, 391.

“Those who have most to say againstthe testimonies are generally those whohave not read them, just as those whoboast of their disbelief of the Bible arethose who have little knowledge of itsteachings. They know that it condemnsthem, and their rejection of it gives them afeeling of security in their sinful course.”—1 Selected Messages, 45-46.

“Let ministers and people rememberthat gospel truth ruins if it does not save.‘The soul that refuses to listen to the invi-tations of mercy from day to day can soonlisten to the most urgent appeals withoutan emotion stirring his soul. As laborerswith God we need more fervent piety andless self-exaltation. The more self is ex-alted, the more will faith in the Testi-monies of the Spirit of God be lessened. . Those who trust wholly in themselveswill see less and less of God in the Testi-monies of His Spirit.’ ”—5 Testimonies,134.

“Those who have treated the light thatthe Lord has given as a common thingwill not be benefited by the instructionpresented.

“There are those who will misinterpretthe messages that God has given, in ac-

1 5cordance with their spiritual blindness.

“Some will yield their faith, and willdeny the truth of the messages, pointingto them as falsehoods.

“Some will hold them up to ridicule, working against the light that God hasbeen giving for years, and some who areweak in the faith will thus be led astray.

“But others will be greatly helped by themessages. Though not personally ad-dressed, they will be corrected, and willbe led to shun the evils specified . . TheSpirit of the Lord will be in the instruc-tion, and doubts existing in many mindswill be swept away. The testimonies them-selves will be the key that will explainthe messages given, as scripture is ex-plained by scripture. Many will read witheagerness the messages reprovingwrong, that they may learn what theymay do to be saved . . Light will dawnupon the understanding, and the Spirit willmake an impression on minds, as Bibletruth is clearly and simply presented inthe messages that since 1846 God hasbeen sending His people. These messagesare to find their place in hearts, and trans-formations will take place.”—1 SelectedMessages, 41-42.

“God has given sufficient evidence,so that all who desire to do so may sat-isfy themselves as to the character ofthe Testimonies; and, having acknowl-edged them to be from God, it is theirduty to accept reproof, even though theydo not themselves see the sinfulness oftheir course. If they fully realized their con-dition, what would be the need of reproof?Because they know it not, God mercifullysets it before them, so that they may re-pent and reform before it shall be too late. Those who despise the warning will beleft in blindness to become self-de-ceived; but those who heed it, and zeal-

ously go about the work of separating theirsins from them in order to have the neededgraces, will be opening the door of theirhearts that the dear Saviour may come inand dwell with them. Those who are mostclosely connected with God are the oneswho know His voice when He speaks tothem. Those who are spiritual discernspiritual things. Such will feel gratefulthat the Lord has pointed out their er-rors.”—5 Testimonies, 682-583.

“When the minds of persons reprovedare under a strong deception, they natu-rally resist the testimony; and havingtaken an attitude of resistance, it is diffi-cult for them afterward to acknowledgethat they have been wrong.”—1 SelectedMessages, 51.

“I took the precious Bible and sur-rounded it with the several Testimoniesfor the Church, given for the people ofGod. Here, said I, the cases of nearly allare met. The sins they are to shun arepointed out. The counsel that they desirecan be found here, given for other casessituated similarly to themselves. God hasbeen pleased to give you line upon line andprecept upon precept. But there are notmany of you that really know what is con-tained in the Testimonies. You are not fa-miliar with the Scriptures.”—2 Testimo-nies, 605.

“One stood by my side and said: ‘Godhas raised you up and has given youwords to speak to the people and toreach hearts as He has given to no otherone. He has shaped your testimonies tomeet cases that are in need of help. Youmust be unmoved by scorn, derision, re-proach, and censure. In order to be God’sspecial instrument, you should lean to noone, but hang upon Him alone; and, likethe clinging vine, let your tendrils entwineabout Him. He will make you a meansthrough which to communicate His light

1 6 Do not Reject the Spirit of Prophecyto the people. You must daily gatherstrength from God in order to be fortified, that your surroundings may not dim oreclipse the light that He has permitted toshine upon His people through you. It isSatan’s special object to prevent thislight from coming to the people of God,who so greatly need it amid the perils ofthese last days.”—2 Testimonies, 607-608.

“There are some who think they areable to measure the character and to esti-mate the importance of the work the Lordhas given me to do. Their own mind andjudgment is the standard by which theywould weigh the testimonies.

“My Instructor said to me, Tell thesemen that God has not committed tothem the work of measuring, classify-ing, and defining the character of thetestimonies. Those who attempt this aresure to err in their conclusions. The Lordwould have men adhere to their appointedwork. If they will keep the way of the Lord, they will be able to discern clearly that thework which He has appointed me to do isnot a work of human devising.”—1 Se-lected Messages, 49.

“ ‘Your success is in your simplicity. Assoon as you depart from this and fashionyour testimony to meet the minds of any, your power is gone. Almost everything inthis age is glossed and unreal. The worldabounds in testimonies given to please andcharm for the moment and to exalt self.Your testimony is of a different character. . God has given you your testimony, toset before the backslider and the sinnerhis true condition and the immense losshe is sustaining by continuing a life of sin.God has impressed this upon you byopening it before your vision as He hasto no other now living.’ ”—2 Testimonies,608.

“Those who carefully read the testimo-

nies as they have appeared from the earlydays, need not be perplexed as to their ori-gin. The many books, written by the helpof the Spirit of God, bear a living witnessto the character of the testimonies.”—1 Se-lected Messages, 49-50.

“I was shown that in the wisdom of Godthe sins and errors of all would not be re-vealed . . All who are guilty are addressedin these individual testimonies, althoughtheir names may not be attached to thespecial testimony borne; and if individu-als pass over and cover up their own sinsbecause their names are not especiallycalled, they will not be prospered of God.They cannot advance in the divine life, butwill become darker and darker, until thelight of heaven will be entirely with-drawn.”—2 Testimonies, 447.

“Sometimes in ministers and physi-cians bearing responsibilities there has de-veloped a disposition to discard the testi-monies, and I have been instructed not toplace testimonies in their hands; for hav-ing yielded to the spirit that tempted andovercame Adam and Eve, they haveopened mind and heart to the control ofthe enemy. Being on a false track, and la-boring under deceptive imaginings, theywill read into the testimonies things thatare not there, but which are in agreementwith the false statements that they have lis-tened to. By reading the testimonies in thelight of their own kindling, they are de-ceived, and will deceive others.”—1 Se-lected Messages, 51-52.

“The Lord has seen fit to give me a viewof the needs and errors of His people. Pain-ful though it has been to me, I have faith-fully set before the offenders their faultsand the means of remedying them . . Thushas the Spirit of God pronounced warn-ings and judgments, withholding not, how-ever, the sweet promise of mercy . .

“Repentant sinners have no cause to

1 7despair because they are reminded oftheir transgressions and warned of theirdanger. These very efforts in their be-half show how much God loves them anddesires to save them. They have only tofollow His counsel and do His will, to in-herit eternal life. God sets the sins of Hiserring people before them, that they maybehold them in all their enormity underthe light of divine truth. It is then their dutyto renounce them forever.”—4 Testimo-nies, 15.

“Some who are not willing to receivethe light, but who prefer to walk in ways oftheir own choosing, will search the testi-monies to find something in them to en-courage the spirit of unbelief and disobe-dience. Thus a spirit of disunion will bebrought in.”—1 Selected Messages, 48.

“Warnings and reproofs are not givento the erring among Seventh-dayAdventists because their lives are moreblameworthy than are the lives of pro-fessed Christians of the nominal churches, nor because the example of their acts areworse than those of the Adventists who willnot yield obedience to the claims of God’slaw, but because they have great light, andhave by their profession taken their posi-tion as God’s special, chosen people, hav-ing the law of God written in their hearts. They signify their loyalty to the God ofheaven by yielding obedience to the lawsof His government. They are God’s rep-resentatives upon the earth. Any sin inthem separates them from God and, ina special manner, dishonors His nameby giving the enemies of His holy law occa-sion to reproach His cause and His people, whom He has called ‘a chosen generation,a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a pecu-liar people,’ that they should show forththe praises of Him that hath called themout of darkness into His marvelouslight.”—2 Testimonies, 452.

“If those whose errors are pointed outmake confession of their wrongdoing, the spell of the enemy may be broken. Ifthey will repent and forsake their sins, Godis faithful and just to forgive their sins, andto cleanse them from all unrighteousness.Christ, the sin-pardoning Redeemer, willremove the filthy garments from them, givethem change of raiment, and set a fair mi-ter upon their head. But so long as theyrefuse to turn from iniquity they cannotdevelop a character that will stand in thegreat day of judgment.”—1 Selected Mes-sages, 52.

“The Lord reproves and corrects thepeople who profess to keep His law. Hepoints out their sins and lays open theiriniquity because He wishes to separateall sin and wickedness from them, thatthey may perfect holiness in His fear . .God rebukes, reproves, and corrects them, that they may be refined, sanctified, el-evated, and finally exalted to His ownthrone.”—2 Testimonies, 453.

“Testimonies of warning have been re-peated. I inquire: Who have heeded them?Who have been zealous in repenting of theirsins and idolatry, and have been earnestlypressing toward the mark for the prize ofthe high calling of God in Christ Jesus? . .I have waited anxiously, hoping that Godwould put His Spirit upon some and usethem as instruments of righteousness toawaken and set in order His church. I havealmost despaired as I have seen, yearafter year, a greater departure from thatsimplicity which God has shown meshould characterize the life of His fol-lowers. There has been less and less in-terest in, and devotion to, the cause of God.I ask: Wherein have those who professconfidence in the Testimonies soughtto live according to the light given inthem? Wherein have they regarded thewarnings given? Wherein have they heeded

1 8 Do not Reject the Spirit of Prophecythe instructions they have received?”—2Testimonies, 483-484.

“The Testimonies are not to belittle theWord of God, but to exalt it and attractminds to it, that the beautiful simplicity oftruth may impress all.”—5 Testimonies,665.

“As the word of God is walled in withthese books and pamphlets, so has Godwalled you in with reproofs, counsel, warnings, and encouragements. Here youare crying before God, in the anguish ofyour souls, for more light. I am authorizedfrom God to tell you that not another rayof light through the Testimonies willshine upon your pathway until you makea practical use of the light already given. The Lord has walled you about with light;but you have not appreciated the light; youhave trampled upon it. While some havedespised the light, others have neglectedit or followed it but indifferently. A fewhave set their hearts to obey the lightwhich God has been pleased givethem.”—5 Testimonies, 666.

“When you gather up the rays of lightwhich God has given in the past, then willHe give an increase of light.”—5 Testimo-nies, 666.

“Perilous times are before us. Every-one who has a knowledge of the truthshould awake and place himself, body, soul, and spirit, under the discipline ofGod. The enemy is on our track. We mustbe wide awake, on our guard against him.We must put on the whole armor of God.We must follow the directions giventhrough the Spirit of Prophecy. We mustlove and obey the truth for this time. Thiswill save us from accepting strong delu-sions. God has spoken to us through HisWord. He has spoken to us through thetestimonies to the church and through thebooks that have helped to make plain our

present duty and the position that weshould now occupy. The warnings thathave been given, line upon line, preceptupon precept, should be heeded. If we dis-regard them, what excuse can we offer?”—8 Testimonies, 298.

“Some sit in judgment on the Scrip-tures, declaring that this or that passageis not inspired, because it does not striketheir minds favorably. They cannot har-monize it with their ideas of philosophyand science, ‘falsely so called’ (1 Tim.6:20). Others for different reasons ques-tion portions of the Word of God. Thusmany walk blindly where the enemy pre-pares the way. Now, it is not the provinceof any man to pronounce sentence uponthe Scriptures, to judge or condemn anyportion of God’s Word. When one pre-sumes to do this, Satan will create anatmosphere for him to breathe whichwill dwarf spiritual growth. When a manfeels so very wise that he dares to dis-sect God’s Word, his wisdom is, withGod, counted foolishness. When heknows more, he will feel that he has every-thing to learn. And his very first lesson isto become teachable. ‘Learn of me,’ saysthe Great Teacher; ‘for I am meek and lowlyin heart: and ye shall find rest unto yoursouls’ (Matt. 11:29).

“You who have been educating your-selves and others in a spirit of criticismand accusing, remember that you are imi-tating the example of Satan. When it suitsyour purpose, you treat the Testimoniesas if you believed them, quoting from themto strengthen any statement you wish tohave prevail. But how is it when light isgiven to correct your errors? Do you thenaccept the light? When the Testimoniesspeak contrary to your ideas, you treatthem very lightly.

“It does not become anyone to dropa word of doubt here and there that shall

1 9work like poison in other minds, shak-ing their confidence in the messages whichGod has given, which have aided in layingthe foundation of this work, and have at-tended it to the present day, in reproofs, warnings, corrections, and encourage-ments. To all who have stood in the way ofthe Testimonies, I would say, God hasgiven a message to His people, and Hisvoice will be heard, whether you hear orforbear. Your opposition has not injuredme; but you must give an account to theGod of heaven, who has sent these warn-ings and instructions to keep His peoplein the right way. You will have to answerto Him for your blindness, for being astumbling block in the way of sinners.

“ ‘To the law and to the testimony: ifthey speak not according to this word, itis because there is no light in them’ (Isa.8:20). Even the work of the Holy Spiritupon the heart is to be tested by theWord of God. The Spirit which inspiredthe Scriptures always leads to the Scrip-tures.”—1 Selected Messages, 42-43.

“It is not alone those who openly re-ject the Testimonies, or who cherishdoubt concerning them, that are on dan-gerous ground. To disregard light is toreject it.”—5 Testimonies, 680.

“When you find men questioning thetestimonies, finding fault with them, andseeking to draw away the people fromtheir influence, be assured that God isnot at work through them. It is anotherspirit. Doubt and unbelief are cherishedby those who do not walk circumspectly. They have a painful consciousness thattheir life will not abide the test of the Spiritof God, whether speaking through HisWord or through the testimonies of HisSpirit that would bring them to His Word.Instead of beginning with their own hearts, and coming into harmony with the pureprinciples of the gospel, they find fault,

and condemn the very means that Godhas chosen to fit up a people to stand inthe day of the Lord.”—1 Selected Mes-sages, 45.

“In many cases the Testimonies arefully received, the sin and indulgence bro-ken off, and reformation at once com-mences in harmony with the light God hasgiven. In other instances sinful indul-gences are cherished, the Testimoniesare rejected, and many excuses whichare untrue are offered to others as thereason for refusing to receive them. Thetrue reason is not given. It is a lack ofmoral courage—a will, strengthened andcontrolled by the Spirit of God, to renouncehurtful habits.”—4 Testimonies, 32.

“Let some skeptical one come along, who is not willing to square his life bythe Bible rule, who is seeking to gainthe favor of all, and how soon the classthat are not in harmony with the workof God are called out. Those who are con-verted, and grounded in the truth, will findnothing pleasing or profitable in the influ-ence or teaching of such a one. But thosewho are defective in character, whosehands are not pure, whose hearts are notholy, whose habits of life are loose, whoare unkind at home, or untrustworthy indeal—all these will be sure to enjoy the newsentiments presented. All may see, if theywill, the true measure of the man, the na-ture of his teaching, from the character ofhis followers . .

“There is in error and unbelief thatwhich bewilders and bewitches themind. To question and doubt and cherishunbelief in order to excuse ourselves instepping aside from the straight path is afar easier matter than to purify the soulthrough a belief of the truth, and obedi-ence thereto. But when better influenceslead one to desire to return, he finds him-self entangled in such a network of Satan,

2 0 Do not Reject the Spirit of Prophecylike a fly in a spider’s web, that it seems ahopeless task to him, and he seldom re-covers himself from the snare laid for himby the wily foe.

“When once men have admitted doubtand unbelief of the testimonies of the Spiritof God, they are strongly tempted to ad-here to the opinions which they haveavowed before others. Their theories andnotions fix themselves like a gloomy cloudover the mind, shutting out every ray ofevidence in favor of the truth. The doubtsindulged through ignorance, pride, orlove of sinful practices, rivet upon thesoul fetters that are seldom broken.Christ, and He alone, can give the neededpower to break them.

“The testimonies of the Spirit of Godare given to direct men to His Word, whichhas been neglected. Now if their messagesare not heeded, the Holy Spirit is shutaway from the soul. What further meanshas God in reserve to reach the erring ones, and show them their true condition?

“The churches that have cherished in-fluences which lessen faith in the testimo-nies, are weak and tottering. Some minis-ters are working to attract the people tothemselves. When an effort is made to cor-rect any wrong in these ministers, theystand back in independence and say, ‘Mychurch accepts my labors.’

“Jesus said, ‘Every one that doethevil, hateth the light, neither cometh tothe light, lest his deeds should be re-proved.’ There are many today pursu-ing a similar course.”—1 Selected Mes-sages, 45-46.

“For years you have had many evi-dences that the Lord has given me a workto do. These evidences could scarcely havebeen greater than they are. Will you brushaway all these evidences as a cobweb,at the suggestion of a man’s unbelief? That which makes my heart ache is the

fact that many who are now perplexed andtempted are those who have had abun-dance of evidence and opportunity to con-sider and pray and understand; and yetthey do not discern the nature of the soph-istries that are presented to influence themto reject the warnings God has given to savethem from the delusions of these lastdays.”—1 Selected Messages, 31.

“Abundant light has been given to ourpeople in these last days. Whether or notmy life is spared, my writings will con-stantly speak, and their work will go for-ward as long as time shall last. My writ-ings are kept on file in the office, and eventhough I should not live, these words thathave been given to me by the Lord will stillhave life and will speak to the people.”—1Selected Messages, 55.

“I thank God for the assurance of Hislove, and that I have daily His leading andguidance. I am very busy with my writing.Early and late, I am writing out the mat-ters that the Lord opens before me. Theburden of my work is to prepare a peopleto stand in the day of the Lord. Thepromise of Christ is sure. The time is notlong. We must work and watch and waitfor the Lord Jesus. We are called upon tobe steadfast, unmovable, always abound-ing in the work of the Lord. All our hopeshave their foundation in Christ.”—1 Se-lected Messages, 56.

“False theories will be mingled with ev-ery phase of experience, and advocatedwith satanic earnestness in order to capti-vate the mind of every soul who is notrooted and grounded in a full knowledgeof the sacred principles of the Word.”—Review, January 7, 1904 (Our First PageMessage, a comment on the book ofJude).

“Very adroitly some have been work-ing to make of no effect the Testimoniesof warning and reproof that have stoodthe test for half a century. At the sametime, they deny doing any such thing.”—Special Testimonies, Series B, No. 7, 31.

“Before the development of recentevents, the course that would be pursuedby Dr. Kellogg and his associates wasplainly outlined before me. He with othersplanned how they might gain the sympa-thies of the people. They would seek to givethe impression that they believed all pointsof our faith and had confidence in the Tes-timonies. Thus many would be deceived, and would take their stand with those whohad departed from the faith.”—Ellen G.White, Letter 238, (1906).

“Brilliant, sparkling ideas often flashfrom a mind that is influenced by thegreat deceiver. Those who listen andacquiesce will become charmed, as Evewas charmed by the serpent’s words. Theycannot listen to charming philosophicalspeculations, and at the same time keepthe Word of the living God clearly inmind.”—1 Selected Messages, 197.

“After looking upon the pleased, inter-ested countenances of those who were lis-tening, One by my side told me that theevil angels had taken captive the mind ofthe speaker . . I was astonished to see withwhat enthusiasm the sophistries and de-ceptive theories were received.”—SpecialTestimonies, Series B, No. 6, 41.

“My soul is so greatly distressed as Isee the working out of the plans of thetempter that I cannot express the agony ofmy mind. Is the church of God always tobe confused by the devices of the ac-cuser, when Christ’s warnings are sodefinite, so plain?”—Special Testimo-nies, Series B, No. 2, 23.

“In the very midst of us will arise falseteachers, giving heed to seducing spiritswhose doctrines are of satanic origin. These teachers will draw away disciplesafter themselves. Creeping in unawares, they will use flattering words and makeskillful misrepresentations with seductivetact.”—Review, January 7, 1904 (OurFirst Page Message, a comment on thebook of Jude).

“I am afraid of the men who have en-tered into the study of the science thatSatan carried into the warfare in heaven. . When they once accept the bait, it seemsimpossible to break the spell that Satancasts over them.”—Manuscript Releases,Vol. 11, 212-213.

An effort isbeing made by those at the head of themedical work in Battle Creek to get con-trol of the property over which, in the sightof the heavenly courts, they have no right-ful control . . There is a deceptive workinggoing on to obtain property in an under-hand way. This is condemned by the lawof God. I will mention no names.
