The Future Holds Endless Possibilities… take the first step toward creating yours by becoming a Bengal today!

Since entering St. Benedict as a freshman, there was nowhere else I would rather be. The small class sizes gave me the opportunity to actively engage and participate in class. I was encouraged to ask questions, which enriched my high school experience. This past summer, I spent two months taking college courses at Washington University in St. Louis. What I learned at St. Benedict helped me excel in classes filled with brilliant students from around the world! St Benedict Prep has not only guided me through high school, but prepared mefor college and career planning.George TomaClass of 2012

St. Benedict is like a second home to me. I transferred here my sophomore year, and instantly knew I made the right decision. At St. Benedict Prep you are able to participate in any and every sport or extracurricular activity, while at the same time balance your schoolwork. Teachers are always available before or after school to give extra help, and are easy to get to know. Here at St. Benedict Prep you are encouraged to join everything you can. Last year my friend and I started a Pep Club to promote school spirit, an opportunity that has made my high school experience that much more memorable.Roxanne TangClass of 2013

I chose St. Benedict because of its small size. There are more choices and programs available and the teachers are able to spend more time with you in and out of class. Using my laptop at school is an exciting opportunity and a unique way to learn in the classroom. Also, it is an easy place to make friends. There are so many people with varied interests that there will always be a group of people like you.Sean McLaughlinClass of 2015

St. Benedict Preparatory High School Integrates Research-Based TRIMESTER Schedule to Meet the Needs

of our Students and School

Research on the impact of the trimester schedule is compelling. Many schools are adopting this schedule to give their students the best educational opportunities. Throughout the country other schools have moved to trimester schedules and have seen great benefits and flexibility.

The trimester schedule divides the school year into three 12 or 13-week terms instead of the traditional schedule of two 18-week semesters. Students take five courses per day instead of six or seven, and have 65-minute class periods. This schedule benefits our students in a number of ways:

> Students have greater choice opportunities for electives> Students ideally have only three of the four core classes (English, math, science and social studies) per trimester> Students see fewer teachers per day, giving them an opportunity to develop closer relationships> Students have more time in class to get individual attention from teachers> Students have more time for active engagement and participation in the form of labs, projects, small group discussions, technology integration and other activities> Students taking AP courses, PACC (dual college-credit courses in partnership with St. Mary’s University in Minnesota) or a performing arts course, will have three trimesters during which they can best prepare and develop their skills

BYOD:Bring Your Own DeviceBYOD:Bring Your Own Device 2012-13 kicked off with great excitement with a transition to a BRING YOUR OWN DEVICE (BYOD) technology program for all incoming students. BYOD is a model where students bring their own mobile tech devices for use in the classroom.

We believe this option will give families: greater flexibility, reduce overall costs and meet the needs of the individual learner.

SBPS administration and IT staff were able to successfully roll out a BYOD program because we have the infrastructure in place to offer a technology called Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI). This VDI technology allows the school to assign a “virtual” computer to a student who then is able to access it through their own personal mobile tech device. Through a “window” or “app” on their personal devices, students are able to access individual, virtual Microsoft Windows 7 desktops, equipped with the specific software they need to complete tasks not yet easily done online or available on their specific devices.

Access to the VDI infrastructure from off-campus allows students to continue to work on class work at home or wherever needed. Students can purchase eBooks instead of print version which can be a great savings to the family.

Research shows that students who used mobile tech devices: > Had better reading comprehension scores than students who used print versions of the same text > Use technologies to develop skills that they will need later in life when they join the workforce

Suggested Devices: Android Tablets (Asus Slider or Transformer, Samsung Galaxy Tab, etc.) Apple iPad devices, Windows 7 laptops or netbooks, Apple MacBook laptops running OS 10.6 or greater

$100 fee/cost for VDI app

Protégé Internship Program

What is a Protégé? A Protégé at SBPS is a senior who has expressed interest in a particular career before needing to choose a college major. During third trimester, students will enter the business world working approximately 12-15 hours a week, while earning academic credit for their effort.

How do I become a Protégé? You must complete the Career Preparation Class, have a good attendance record, meet GPA standards and be approved through an interview with the program director.

Where would I work? Can I go anywhere? Where would you like to work? Most Protégés are placed in positions of their choice, ranging from accounting to zoology.

Do I get paid? Approximately half of the Protégé positions are paid directly by the employer. The other half receive a stipend from the school to help with tuition.

When can I start? Right away! Upon your entrance we will make sure you are scheduled to be on track as part of the program.

What do I really enjoy doing? What is the best career for me?

What can I be when I grow up?Where do I begin?

Designed out of the desire to better prepare our students for life after graduation and to give them an experience outside of the classroom that will enrich their education and provide critical career

insight, the Protégé Internship Program is truly unique.

“This is the most comprehensive program in the entire city of Chicago for high school students who are thinking of going into the medical field” Terry Tuohy – Director of Medical Education, Weiss Memorial Hospital

Because St. Benedict Prep is a place where students become seekers of social justice, students in grades 9-12 are obligated to complete a minimum of ten hours of service learning each academic year. Service learning at all levels is required to take place at a school, parish or church of their choice. As reflection is yet another vital component of our Catholic identity, students then reflect upon their service learning experience.

A renewed highlight of the year for upperclassmen, St. Benedict Prep sponsors an opportunity to travel to rural Central Appalachia to repair homes for low-income families over Spring Break.

Service

St. Benedict Preparatory School‘s vision of ministry is guided through the tradition of St. Benedict and inspired by the Holy Spirit, faculty, and parish staff. The Campus Ministry department is committed to providing students with programs where they can demonstrate compassion for their neighbor, encounter the Living God through ritual, prayer and service work, and find friendship with God through Jesus Christ. Students have many opportunities to grow in their faith including participation at weekly Mass as well as Reconciliation Services during Advent and Lent.

In order to be an exemplary Catholic school, St. Benedict Prep students will have the opportunity to reflect on their spiritual formation through the spirit of retreat. Retreats are vital components that shape and strengthen our Catholic identity.

As freshman, St. Benedict Prep students will be asked to discern their gifts, talents and strengths to improve their Catholic community. Sophomores will be encouraged to examine how Christ is calling them to use their gifts and talents to serve His people as disciples. Juniors will be given the opportunity to deepen their understanding of their call of discipleship by exploring their place as leaders in the Kingdom of God. Finally, seniors will reflect upon how the Holy Spirit has worked through their lives and how it will continue to do so when they leave St. Benedict Prep and embark on new life experiences.

Juniors and seniors also have the opportunity to attend Kairos, a three-night, four-day retreat based on the Spiritual Exercisesof St. Ignatius of Loyola.

An exciting addition for 2012-13 is the creation of the “House” system. It is a take on the British School House system where all members of the secondary school are split into five Houses or divisions. Think Harry Potter without the quidditch matches.

This is an opportunity for a unified secondary school environment consistent with competition and loads of FUN! The Houses work together over the course of the year to earn points through academic GPAs, attendance, skills competition, as well as a variety of other opportunities. The House with the most points at the end of the year will have first pick of the possible rewards that are available ranging from a trip to Great America to going bowling or having a lakefront picnic.

All students in grades 6-12 are assigned to their House during the first week of school. The Houses are named after saints belonging to the religious order founded by St. Benedict:

Bede House (Forest Green)Boniface House (Orange)Gregory House (Purple)Hilda House (Silver)Scholastica House (Navy Blue)

Home Sweet Home!

St. Benedict Prep Heads of House

Page 9: Do College Prep Differently Insert

This new tradition was formed with student input through their participation in the House Committee, which includes five seniors selected as head of each House. The students

worked together to learn about their House’s patron saint, created symbols and flags that represent their House, and developed a sense of belonging. Students were all assigned to a particular House in random order. House competitions began with the first all-school

assembly and continue monthly all year. The winning House each month will receive a House Color Spirit Day!

During kick-off week, students and faculty worked on their House crests, House cheers, Fall Fest plans, and designated a charity.

2012-13 designated charities:

Bede: Anti-Cruelty Society

Boniface: Lurie Children’s Hospital of ChicagoGregory: Share Your Soles/Deborah’s Place

Hilda: Breast Cancer AwarenessScholastica: Multiple Sclerosis Foundation
