The Optimist Creed

Promise Yourself

To be so strong that nothing can dis-turb your peace of mind. To talk health, happiness and pros-perity to every person you meet. To make all your friends feel that there is something in them. To look at the sunny side of every-thing and make your optimism come true. To think only of the best, to work only for the best, and to expect only the best. To be just as enthusiastic about the success of others as you are about your own. To forget the mistakes of the past and press on to the greater achieve-ments of the future. To wear a cheerful countenance at all times and give every living crea-ture you meet a smile. To give so much time to the im-provement of yourself that you have no time to criticize others. To be too large for worry, too noble for anger, too strong for fear, and too happy to permit the presence of trouble.

Editor: Curt Sandberg THANKS to everyone that submitted articles for this newsletter. For those who wish to submit articles for future issues, please email them to me at [email protected] by the 27th of each month. Thank you!

What is our next project to help “bring out the best in our youth”? Is it the Essay, Oratorical, CCDHH scholarship contests, a spelling bee, a bike safety project, sports contests, and on and on! Or how about a strong membership drive to add new members with new ide-as and energy? Spring (and I am told it will definitely come – fairly soon), is the time for new beginnings, new life and a new sunny look on life. So let’s get started now, laying the foundation for all those exciting new events – and then kick-start them, even if the snow is still piled high in the yard. If you need an extra nudge, re-read my column last month, and arti-cles by Ken Munch on 91-year-old Gordie Lyng life-learning experi-ences as an Optimist, and Carmen Bakken’s tips on holding a suc-cessful NOW event, and all the great project ideas in the Club News section. Back issues are available on the DMM website. Just remember, we have a bunch of dedicated Optimists ready and willing to assist your clubs in any way to help you Grow to Serve and Impact more kids’ lives. THANKS to Tim Goetz / MARCO for printing many of the handouts for our quarterly gatherings and annual conventions. PLEASE consider MARCO for your technology needs.

Club Anniversaries During March There are no active clubs within the DMM that chartered in March. Let’s fill this void in the DMM with some New Club Building efforts!

Special incentive for sponsor, new members for 3rd Qtr Conference Governor Dave is offering a special incentive for Optimists who recruit new members before April 30 to save a few dollars on the registration fee for the 3rd Quarter Conference in Watertown on May 3-4. Any member who recruits two new members from Oct. 1 through April 30, will receive a $10 discount off their 3rd Quarter registration fee, and those new members will also receive the $10 registration fee credit. “I know it’s not a huge savings,” Mar-tin said, “but it’s also a recognition for those sponsors, and a good way to introduce those new members to our District Optimist family.” For those qualifying, please make a notation on the registration form when sending payment.

3rd Qtr Supplementary Info In addition to the riveting story of Dr. Melanie Weiss' successful battle against opiate drug addiction, we will also hear noted author Tom Roberts of the Chil-dren's Home Society read his new children's book "A New Norm" and then hear about the Avera Behavioral Health's initiative to promote mental well-ness among adolescents. The discussion and Q&A will be led by Amber Reints, a Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner at Avera Hospital. The collaborative effort is fo-cused on providing hope to the nearly 20 percent of youth who are experi-encing one or more mental health conditions, such as depression, ADHD or behavior problems.

DMM District Dispatch Issue 18.19.06 March 2019

Club News from club bulletins

BISMARCK — filled backpacks as they do every month and prepared to award their Funds for the Future Grant to one of the elementary schools. They keep their meeting speaker list varied by having a differ-ent member every month responsible for that task. ROCHESTER — held their 17th Annual Frozen Goose Run / Walk on Feb. 2. WEST ST PAUL — held its annual Essay Awards Presentation event on Feb. 20, the biggest snowstorm of the year! Five of the six prize winners, their fam-ilies and a teacher attended the event, which included a buffet. None of the finishers knew where they placed until the awards ceremony. The students who placed in the top three spots were presented with medallions and cash prizes. The fourth through sixth-place authors received certificates and Target gift cards. HARTFORD AREA — met to discuss community needs, fundraising ideas, meeting speaker ideas, Oratorical and Essay contest possibilities. Their great start is evidenced by their early re-cruitment successes. RICHFIELD — held their annual Chili and Salad fundraiser and have secured 238 Ave of Flag sponsors towards their goal of 500. Mother Nature cancelled two of their meetings. WORTHINGTON — held a Tri-Star Bas-ketball project and helped fund a local wrestling tournament as well as the high school prom.

ROSEVILLE — has launched a new pro-gram featuring monthly 2-3 hour workshop style presentations followed by discussion entitled “Leadership Les-sons Learned For Our Members From Our Members. “ Speakers and topics are already lined up through October! WATERTOWN — received thanks and accolades from the local CVB for the tremendous impact the club’s Winter Wonderland has on the community and the visitors it brings to the city. They assisted with the North Star Ac-tivities Association College Final Four Basketball Tournament. Watertown has also launched a Sleep in Heavenly Peace chapter. RUSHMORE NOON —celebrated Opti-mist Day on Feb 7th with a mayoral proclamation and joined Big Brothers Big Sisters to fill bags for “Kids Against Hunger.” NORTHWEST SUBURBAN — decided to honor Optimists 100th Anniversary by holding a canned food drive with the goal of collecting 100 cans of food. Attendance at social events has been good so members are brainstorming how to hold more of this type of event. Mother Nature cancelled one of their meetings, too. VERMILLION — financially assisted the Robotics of Vermillion Club, gave food in support of Tanager Take-out food, gave stocking hats to keep kiddos warm, and participated in the Polar Plunge in support of Special Olympics of SD. Oratorical, Essay, and Kids Speak Out projects are also in process. Club President , Dennis Steffen relayed that following the DMM 3rd Qtr Mtg in Watertown he’ll be moving to Nor-man, OK. He will be missed in the DMM and will be a great addition to an already strong Norman club. DEVILS LAKE — thanked the student

who submitted the only Essay entry with a $25 gift card. They are consid-ering a volunteer hours based scholar-ship that they will award next year. Their upcoming project lists includes Easter basket giveaway, an end-of-school year event in May, their annual Golf Tournament on June 2, and the Lake Region Library’s Summer Reading Program. BROOKINGS — held a Youth-In-Government Day which allowed high school students to tour several differ-ent city and county facilities, attend various city or county government meetings, as well as meet, visit and ask questions of city officials. Their major fundraisers continue to be the concession stand and Avenue of Flags that support literally dozens of official Optimist as well as locally inspired youth projects. EDEN PRAIRIE — the club is a major sponsor of Eden Prairie Sings! which determines who will represent their city in this summer’s statewide Minne-sota Sings competition. The club has received excellent coverage in the lo-cal newspaper of their involvement in Eden Prairie Sings!, and the club’s Essay and Oratorical Contests com-plete with pictures of past winners. It’s obvious that they know how to write and submit press releases that get the attention and meet the stand-ards of the Eden Prairie News. Three stored have received coverage over about 30 days from mid-January thru mid-February. Please send your club’s newsletter to [email protected] to have your club’s activities listed in upcom-ing issues of the DMM Dispatch.

Growth / Membership March Growth Target: Local Business Owners The targeted recruitment group for the month of March is “Local Business Owners.” You never know, some local businesses might be more than willing to provide in-kind goods and services that can go a long ways for Optimist projects and events, sometimes they just need to be asked. Plus being involved in Optimist is also good for business networking in the community. Remember: business owners AND businesses themselves can be Friend of Optimist members! Over the past few months, we have talked a lot about membership recruitment. Starting next month we will discuss some methods and strategies for membership retention, something that is equally important as recruitment in our Op-timist Clubs. February was another outstanding month for membership recruitment across the DMM District. We brought in a total of 34 new members - WOW! Hats off to everyone who recruited new members for our Optimist Clubs, it is much ap-preciated! Please join me in welcoming the new members below.

DMM District Dispatch Issue 18.19.06 March 2019

Strategic Planning Update January 2019-February 2019 The DMM has chosen to focus on four issues in the 2018-2019 year: New Club Building: Terry Gorman and his committee:

Built a club in Hartford Watertown continues to develop the inner workings of a new relationship with Lake Area Tech Governor Dave, Terry and the committee has identified district clubs that are perfectly positioned for revi-

talization. As they move towards infusing these clubs with optimism as they celebrate 100 years of Opti-mists the club will be ready to Bring the Best Out in their youth, themselves and their communities.

Marketing and Public Relations: Nicole Kringstad and her committee:

Star Munch has taken on the goal to have a data base for the DMM District clubs using the newspaper as-sociations in ND, SD, MB and MN: When this data base has been created there will be a link on the DMM web site so press releases can be made to the appropriate media outlets before and/or after DMM and/or local club events.

Nicole Kringstad and her committee has a conference call scheduled February 24. They will be moving for-ward on reaching the goal of developing a "how to" Media Guide that features available OI Branding Guidelines and suggest ways to use them.

Leadership Development: Don Stover and his worker bees:

are putting together educational platforms that embrace technology and redesign the presentation of the training at the Annual Meeting in August of 2019.

Develop a one hour and thirty minute training program, using the Leaders Guide found on https://www.optimist-dmm.org/ then District Business / then DMM Quick Reference Guide Kevin Hammell continues to develop training guides for leadership to view when it is suitable for the lead-

ers’ own time schedule. Recruiting, Mentoring, Retaining equals Growth (RMRG Committee): Jerry Haas and his crew The Optimist International and the DMM web sites have good, solid recruiting, mentoring and retention ideas that are user friendly for individuals and clubs. Check these web sites out and use them to your hearts delight:

https://www.optimist-dmm.org/ https://www.optimist.org/documents/centennial/100_Ways_to_Celebrate_ideas.pdf https://www.optimist.org/centennial

Strategic planning is a structural ongoing movement. The high points of planning are:

establish priorities focus on a mission that will create energy strengthen value to membership ensure there is a common goal.

DMM District Dispatch Issue 18.19.06 March 2019

We Have 6 Months - What Do You Plan to Do to Help Your Club with Fitness

Give an elevator speech to 1 person, per day or 1 per week?

(Do you have your elevator speech?) “Hi, I am ______________; I am with the Optimists Club of ________. We are an all-volunteer organization. Optimists Clubs exist strictly to make our communities a better place. We are looking for a few like-minded people, who would like to do great things for the youth of this community.”

Give them time here to take in that information. Continue:

“If you think you might be interested, would you give me some contact info. Whatever you are comfortable with, ei-ther cell number or email? I will only use it to contact you about opportunities to do great things for the youth of this community.”

At that point, if they are a good lead they will give you info. If not, be satisfied with that.

************************ Maybe set up an information table around your community,

at a sporting event or at one of your club events/projects. Again use the Elevator Speech to approach people.

DO’S AND DON’TS (for this type of event):

Do not have too many people. If you have more than 3 people have only two at the table. It is easy to overwhelm people. This is a soft sell!

Do have at least one woman and one man. Do ask for their contact info so you can do follow up and reminders. If you just give them info on a meeting or OI, usually they will not give you contact info after they have your infor-

mation and you will have no way to follow up with them. Do be courteous of their time. If they look like they are in a hurry, do not bother them. We do not want to give

them a bad first impression of Optimists. Do not overwhelm them with information about everything your Club does. One or two really great things are OK if

they asked for. Do not just invite them to a Club meeting. Instead, invite them to a project or event. You are asking them if they

want to make a difference in their community. You did not ask them if they wanted to come to a meeting. Do not be discouraged if they don’t want to give you any contact info. It just means they were not a good prospect

for right now.

Let’s set the Goals NOW to increase our Members! If you have set that Goal already-Great, maybe increase that Goal?

If you have not - please set it NOW
