Denmark is a core maritime nation in Europe and Danish shipping companies are active in all parts of the world. At the Danish Maritime Fair, more than 150 Danish and international exhibitors.

IRON PUMP A/S, which is specialized in marine pumps and pumps for the offshore industry, will be there when Danish Maritime Fair is launched in Bella Center from the 7 to 10 October. IRON Pump expects that in Bella Center there will be better possibilities to get access to Danish Shipowners compared to other large maritime fairs.

Clipper Group will be present at Danish Maritime Fair in Bella Center with peo-ple from Clipper Group, Clipper Fleet Management, and Clipper Performance Management. Clipper would like to show that technical management in Copenha-gen actually is competitive both in price and in quality.

Uni-Tankers, which has its head office in Middelfart at Funen, would very much like to recruit more young Danes and train them as ship’s officers in the Dan-ish merchant fleet. It is one of the goals having a stand at Danish Maritime Fair in Bella Center, Copenhagen.

Innovation is not just something you talk about. It is something that you should do. This is the attitude at the schools for marine engineering, which have moved this year’s Blue Innovation Camp to Bella Center, where the event will be held during Danish Maritime Fair.

Except to participate in Blue Innova-tion Camp, Copenhagen School of Marine Engineering and Technology Management will also have its own stand. Here the school will promote its new supplementary training as marine superintendents.

Five very different vessels have been nominated for The Danish Ship of The Year, an award given for the first time ever this year. The five nominated ships are; the ro/ro ferry Ark Germania, the passenger ferry Bergensfjord, the offshore service vessel Lina, the product tanker Nord Geranium and the offshore installation vessel Sea Challanger.

Esvagt A/S is the largest employer of ordinary seamen in Denmark. They hire newly qualified seamen who have not yet had the six months of sailing that gives them the right to call themselves experienced.

Maritime Denmark joined a group of Danish seamen reporting for work on 10 Esvagt ships in the station in the North Sea.

Almost 259 years after Iver Jensen Borger started his production of compasses, it is now his job to close this traditional part of the business.

Danish Maritime Days, along with the top-level international conference the Danish Maritime Forum, has the potential to lift Danish shipping a step upwards in the international arena.

Authorities, maritime suppliers and shipowners will discuss how to create conditions that will support new in-novative technology.

The latest solutions will be showcased during Danish Maritime Days and at the Danish Maritime Fair.

Danish ports do well in an international perspective and this years TØF Port Conference will be part of the Danish Maritime Days.

Naval Team Denmark, MARCOD and Danish Maritime provides an insight into the North Jutland maritime clusters capability.

Air pollution from shipping causes ap-proximately 50.000 premature deaths annually in Europe. Therefore, we have interest in improving the air quality in Denmark as well as on the European level.

developing green maritime solutions to im-prove energy efficiency and reduce pollution from ships. Thus, the maritime sector is one of Denmark’s commercial strengths and a key area of growth. In the Arctic, where traffic has increased in recent years, Danish shipping companies are among the pioneers in new maritime business areas such as sailing commercially on the Northern Sea Route and offering services such as ice-management and assistance in connec-tion with drilling in the Arctic offshore sector. The Danish Maritime Cluster – Blue Denmark – consists of a large number of companies with activities linked to international and Danish shipping. In addition to shipbrokers, ports, logistics companies and shipyards, the Danish maritime industry has become an important supplier of technology and services to ship owners and shipyards around the world. The hallmarks of our maritime cluster – Blue Denmark – are commerce, competence and cooperation. the maritime industry in Denmark has huge range. We maintain a high innovative level

with solid competences in a wide range of fields that include for instance ship engines, ship design, new ship materials, retrofitting, environmentally og climate friendly solutions, paint, methods for repairs og new building, satellite communica-tion, safety and life-saving equipment, pumps, lubrication, control systems, sensors, analytical tools or specialised ships to name some.

Our position as an innovative maritime centre has not sprung out of nothing. It stems from a historically close cooperation between ship-yards, maritime equipment manufacturers and technology driven businesses, shipowners and organisations. Denmark has long known that the maritime industry is global. A global cooperation is important as it is not possible to be a global leader in all fields. Denmark has built extraordi-

nary ships since Viking times and is an obvious maritime hub with many competences.

First Movers are not exclusive to Denmark. Inven-tive businesses can be found everywhere. One thing is common for all; they are severely let down if they cannot trust in the implementation and enforcement of decisions from The International Maritime Organisation, IMO.

If we do not have global legislation, enforced evenly, the oceans and seas will be open to complete anarchy. The businesses that do not develop new products or do not adhere to the legislation will be the winners, while the First Movers will lose.

If we want sea transport to be greener and com-petitive and that maritime businesses invest in development and technology, the businesses

have to have a business model that does not punish those who do develop new products – or for that matter hinders the shipowners who lead the way by implementing the new components.

If the world wants innovative products that can reduce the environmental impact while continu-ously raising the efficiency, quality and safety in international shipping, the First Movers must be safeguarded through international legisla-tion. Also, the efficient enforcement of the rules must be pushed further up on the agenda of the legislators.

The maritime industry can provide the world a safer and greener future. But, it cannot do it alone.

despite of the fact that Denmark is one of the world’s leading seafaring nations with

maritime roots, which go more than 1000 years back in time, it is the first time that Denmark is host to a large international maritime fair.

For many years, our customers have asked us why Denmark did not have its own national maritime fair. A place, where Danish companies could present their maritime products and competences, and where we could invite others to present theirs.

We could not think of a reply other than they were right, of course. Why did the many competent Danish manufacturers of maritime equipment, the successful Danish shipping companies and all the other players in the Danish maritime sector of all have to go abroad to see and be seen.

For a media group like Maritime Denmark, the job was not straight forward, but we chose, neverthe-less, to lead the way with invaluable support from our partners – The Danish Shipowners’ Assocation, Danish Maritime, Danish Maritime Authority, and Oil Gas Denmark.

The support for Danish Maritime Fair has been immense from the very outset, and soon the enrolment could not be contained within the planned framework for the fair, so today we can welcome you to three halls and to more than 160 exhibitors from Denmark and abroad.

We know that many more exhibitors would have liked to participate from the beginning, but haven’t had the possibility because of the short run-up.

When we nevertheless chose to insist on Danish Maritime Fair being held for the first time in 2014, it was to support the large-scale event – Danish Maritime Days. An event, which is built on the same recognition that Denmark really has much to offer at the maritime area, and that time has come to show it to all the world.

Thank you for coming – we hope that exhibitors as well as visitors will benefit from Danish Maritime Fair and that we will see you again next year to an even better and even bigger Danish Maritime Fair 2015.

iRON Pump will be among the many equip-ment suppliers, which will be present in Bella

Center, when the doors open to the first Danish Maritime Fair. IRON Pump has at its stand chosen to show a completely new kind of pumps that is named QTe, which has some improved features compared to previously. QTe is an anti-heeling pump intended for ships with high ship’s sides, which need large lifting height.

- The QTe pump is very compact, and it has a higher operating efficiency than others have at the market, tells Sven Dyrdal, Sales Manager at IRON Pump, adding that IRON Pump at the stand also will present a new series of environmentally friendly pumps, which lives up to the water directive in connection to the CE marking. The pump series takes into account new and future environmental demands, which are defined in the MARPOL con-vention and which are about reducing the ships’ emissions and energy consumption.

- We have a series of pumps, which use up to 30 percent less energy, Sven Dyrdal says.

great expectationsIRON Pump expects that at the fair in Bella Center it will be easier to get access to Danish shipown-ers than it is for instance in Hamburg, when the world’s largest maritime fair, SMM, takes place.

- We expect that Danish Maritime Fair will be a fair where you can speak to a lot more Danish shipowners, also some of the companies that we don’t see at other fairs. SMM in Hamburg is so large a fair that so many other people are there that you also should talk to. We believe that this fair will be more concentrated and that it will be another kind of visitors, Sven Dyrdal says.

- Moreover, we expect that it will focus more on research, new products and green technology, where SMM to a lesser degree focuses on just that. Norshipping in Norway is also a more traditional maritime fair with less focus on research. We very much hope that Danish Maritime Fair will get an innovative pivotal point, he adds.

Focus on technical management

Clipper Group will be present at Danish Maritime Fair in Bella Center with people from Clipper Group, Clipper Fleet Management, and Clipper Performance Management. Clipper would like to show that technical management in Copenhagen actually is competitive both in price and in quality.

When Clipper shows up in Bella Center the purpose is first of all to present the

shipping company’s fleet management services – that is technical management, crewing, SQE, and shipping services.

- We will also introduce our in-house developed Vessel Performance Monitoring Solution COACH and show concrete cases and examples on im-proved energy efficiency, says Emma Wahlberg from Clipper Group.

Clipper Groups wants to increase the awareness around performance-driven fleet management,

and the importance and benefits from long-term thinking in fleet maintenance.

- And of course, we look forward to telling the market about COACH and our dedicated ef-forts towards improved overall performance - showing a solution that really works, Emma Wahlberg says.

Clipper Group expects that Danish Maritime Fair in contrast to for instance SMM in Hamburg and Norshipping will attract a wider visitor base, bring-ing together also ship owners and operators, in addition to the technical sector of the industry.

- Copenhagen based technical management is competitive both in price and in quality - and we want the owners, operators and technical managers out there to see it. So in that sense, the location suits our purpose well, Emma Wahlberg says.

the people at Uni-Tankers think they have lived too anonymously at their office at

Funen. Now they want to change that, however, and one of the means is to participate in Danish Maritime Fair in Bella Center.

- We would like to tell, who we are, and we will focus on two things. We will for one thing tell about our growth plans, which are about owning and operating environmentally friendly tankers, and for another tell about, how it is to work in Uni-Tankers. So, it will all be about tech-nique, energy, and environment, but also about Uni-Tankers as a working place. For the same reason approximately half of the five persons, who will be present at our stand, will be from our crewing department, tells Jan Rindebæk, CTO in Uni-Tankers.

Uni-Tankers does not intend to recruit many foreign ship’s officers. On the contrary, the ship-ping company gladly spends resources training more Danish ship’s officers, if it is possible to make the young people interested in shipping

in general and in Uni-Tankers in particular.

- In Uni-Tankers, we have a variation - we both have foreign and Danish seamen. We still believe in Danes as ship’s officers in the merchant fleet, and we will continue the work with getting more Danish seamen and with the stand, we approach directly young students, who see getting employment in our company as a pos-sibility, Jan Rindebæk says.

plans about More tonnageUni-Tankers, which is specialized in smaller chemical tankers between 5,000 – 20,000 dwt, has previously launched plans about expanding the fleet by 30 percent to 50 tankers. At Danish Maritime Fair, Uni-Tankers will tell a little bit more about the plans of acquiring more ships and possible orders of newbuildings.

- We have an ambition of building a number of tankers with the lowest possible amount of emissions and biggest possible fuel efficiency. It is about new designs, and we will lower the

energy consumption by looking at the hull, propellers, engines, and scrubbers. Moreover, our daily life will be reflected in the design, as we sail very much part-load in contrast to many other shipping companies, and this fact will be reflected in the design, Jan Rindebæk says. He does not want to say anything about the time frame for the newbuildings.

- Tankers from 5,000 to 20,000 tons is the niche market, where we want to play a significant role in the future, and we believe that the growth that we have now, will continue. That is also part of the explanation why we want to recruit more ship’s officers, Jan Rindebæk says.

- We participate in the fair at Bella Center, because we are proud of our business. We would like to show that we actually are a rather big shipping company with a healthy economy, Jan Rindebæk says.

Focus on recruiting Danish ship’s oFFicers

The tanker shipping company Uni-Tankers, which has its head office in Middelfart at Funen, would very much like to recruit more young Danes and train them as ship’s officers in the Danish merchant fleet. It is one of the goals having a stand at Danish Maritime Fair in Bella Center, Copenhagen. Another goal is to tell more about the shipping company’s expansion plans.

- There is no doubt that it will be a fantastic op-portunity for our member companies to display their qualities. We thought that here there were very good opportunities for exposure, explains Jenny N. The maritime member companies live by being innovative in their product development, and the expectation is that Danish Maritime Fair will be a fair on top of the development, where new tech-nologies to a very high degree will be presented. Compared to a large international fair like SMM in Hamburg, the Danish maritime companies maybe even will have better opportunities to display their qualities in Bella Center, as SMM is so large that you as a Danish company easily can be lost in the crowd, as Jenny N. Braat puts it.

Another aspect is that Danish Maritime Fair is connected to the holding of Danish Maritime Days and not least Danish Maritime Forum, where a long list of decision-makers from many different companies will be present together with politicians and experts from all over the world. A great deal of all those people is also expected to go out to Bella Center, where the fair takes place, and it will also influence the fair, Jenny N. Braat expects.

- It will be a fair that can satisfy every taste. There will be focus on political questions and there will be the latest new technology too. It will be a fair showing the full circle, where many other fairs or conferences have either one thing or the other. Danish Maritime Fair will have both, Jenny N. Braat says. Besides, she thinks it is a big advantage that the whole Blue Denmark supports the fair.

- As a trade organization we of course think it is fantastic that a fair is established on Dan-

ish ground, she says mentioning that many different types of companies will participate in the fair and that every aspect of the Blue Denmark will be represented.

- The fair also shows that the whole Blue Den-mark cooperates. You don’t see that in so many other maritime countries. We therefore believe that bigger attention will be devoted to the fact that Denmark is a maritime centre in Europe.

a Fair on top oF the Development

Danish Maritime Fair, which takes places in Bella Center in Copenhagen from the 7 to 10 October, will be a fair with focus on new technologies. There was therefore no reason for Danish Maritime to hesitate, when the organization chose to be partner at the fair. The new fair will after all give the member companies very good opportunities to display their qualities.

- Our core business area is hybrid technology for ship’s propulsion systems. We make calculations, and by the help of our partners, which are The Switch, Visedo, and Super B , we supply AC-grid or DC-grid power systems, which get maximum value out of generators, energy storage systems, fuel cell systems, and conversion systems, says Ole Duus, who is partner in EPTechnologies together with Kasper Falkenberg.

Together with the partners, EPTechnologies covers all of the Scandinavian market as well as Greenland, the Faroe Islands, Iceland, and the Baltic countries.

The DC-grid solution is developed as a pro-pulsion solution by the help of plug and play modules and an advanced load balancing. For the AC-grid solution, EPTechnologies offers IP54 liquid-cooled converters, permanent magnet motors, and generators. Both kind of solutions are easily integrated, and no complex integra-tion systems are needed.

The products offered by EPTechnologies has a range of 30 – 8,000 kW per unit, whereas

many of the competitors only offer products of 400-600 kW . EPTechnologies is therefore able to service all ship sizes.

- We also make energy optimizations of the electricity production in ferries. We place a PM generator at the propeller shaft, which can produce the electricity that the auxiliary generators otherwise produce, and you can then turn them off, Ole Duus says.

Another of the company’s competences is retrofitting of older ships, where EPTechnolo-gies as part of the job makes a ROI (Return on Investment) calculation showing the payback time for the investment. EPTechnologies also supplies lithium batteries from Super B , which is one of the leading suppliers of lithium batteries.

EPTechnologies can calculate the size of the battery package in relation to the life span. The lithium batteries are the biggest cost related to electrical propulsion systems, and the expected life span is therefore a very important factor in the ROI calculation.

EPTechnologies’ customers are shipping compa-nies and shipyards that are focusing on energy optimization. Despite the fact that the com-pany has only existed since January this year, EPTechnologies already has been involved in several large projects.

blue Innovation Camp 2014 will gather more than 200 students from all the country’s

schools for marine engineering as well as from The Technical University of Denmark in Ballerup, which contributes with a team of students from the course process and innovation engineering. They will compete against each other in groups about solving some innovation tasks, which they will have been set.

- It will be tasks, which will be about product innovation. It will not be so much about the aspect of business development; on the con-trary, it will be innovation at the concrete level. At last year’s Blue Innovation Camp there were different products from a gangway for a wind turbine to explosion protection of some prod-

ucts, tells Allan Larsen, Associate Professor and Project Manager at the Copenhagen School for Marine Engineering and Technology Manage-ment. He is part of the project team consisting of representatives from Copenhagen School of Marine Engineering and Technology Manage-ment, Aarhus School of Marine Engineering, and Martec in Frederikshavn, which is organizing the holding of Blue Innovation Camp.

He emphasizes that Blue Innovation Camp will be held across schools and across educational fields. The event will thus improve the students’ abilities to co-operate.

- The students of marine engineering should at the camp work together across the schools,

but also together with the students from The Technical University in Ballerup. The students from The Technical University often have a different angle on innovation, and thus the professional competences are complementary to each other. It gives another dynamic, when the students of marine engineering co-operate with other professions instead of only marine engineers, Allan Larsen says.

the best solution Will be electedThe students will have two days to solve the task, and at that time they will have to work out a possible solution, draw up a prototype and plan how to present the solution. - The students will, moreover, also have to evaluate each other, they therefore have to find out what they think is the best solution, Allan Larsen tells.

the fair Will give greater visibilityWhen the schools of marine engineering have chosen to hold this year’s Blue Innovation Camp at the fair in Bella Center, it is partly because the physical framework in Bella Center is very fine and partly because it will give a greater visibility.

- We will get attention drawn to the fact that we have some students with some competences already before they have finished their education. Of course, the marine engineering education have a technical core, they can, however, much more than just that. We will have their broad competences made visible, Allan Larsen says.

He adds that the schools very much hope to enter into a dialogue with the visitors and the exhibitors at the fair, so everybody are welcome to interrupt them during the event.

skuld continues to follow a growth strategy, where diversification and innovation are the

key words and where service and the understand-ing of customers’ needs are closely linked to the Skuld culture.

Marine insurance is a knowledge intensive indus-try and Skuld’s 240 staff members world-wide represent a high level of competence, including altogether 16 legal jurisdictions and a wide variety of maritime experience and expertise.

Skuld has an ambition of reaching 500 million USD in premium in 2015, which should be compared to the latest annual accounts for 2013, where Skuld had 379 million USD in premium, a solid growth of 19 percent compared to the year before. The increasing premium volume should come from growth among P&I members as well as continued growth in the commercial operations.

will launch a new supplementary training as marine superintendent. The course is tar-geted marine engineers, ship’s officers, and navigators, who want to work as a marine superintendent.

- We will present the new course, and we will have folders and posters ready with informa-

tion about the new supplementary training. Not least, we will tell that the course will start by the 1 January, and people will have the possibility to enroll on the course, says Jan Skovgaard, Assistant Professor at Copenhagen School of Marine Engineering and Technology Management.

The reason why the school has initiated the new course is that marine engineers today

have not sailed as many years as they had previously. That means that they do not have the same track record as marine engineers had earlier, when they were appointed to marine superintendents.

- We therefore take in younger marine engi-neers, who have two years working experience as a minimum, and combined with a theoreti-cal education, which we give them, we think

they will have the necessary qualifications to work as marine superintendents, Jan Skovgaard says.

The education consists of six modules, and the whole education will take 1.5 year. Among the many subjects, which the students will go through during the course, are international maritime laws, operations optimization, applied maritime economics, risk management, project management and much more. The lessons will be in English, and all the teaching material will be in English too, as the school expects also to have students from abroad.

- The students will meet three whole days per module, and besides there will be an e-learning platform. The students are, after all, working, they have busy working days and travel a lot, we therefore have some short concentrated periods, Jan Skovgaard says.

- We expect that people will drop by our stand in Bella Center to hear more about the new supplementary training, and I expect that many will find it interesting, as it is people in the shipping business, who will visit the fair, and the training that we will present is new, Jan Skovgaard says.

previously, you became superintendent, when you had sailed as a marine engineer for at

least 10-15 years and had ended up being chief engineer onboard the ship. Then the next step would be to become a superintendent at the shipowner’s office. However, time has changed, and now marine engineers are not sailing for so many years. The new superintendents therefore do not have the same solid track record as the superintendents used to have.

- We take in younger marine engineers, who have two years working experience as a minimum, and combined with a theoretical education we think they will have the necessary qualifi-cations to work as superintendents, says Jan Skovgaard, Assistant Professor at Copenhagen School of Marine Engineering and Technology Management. The school has developed the new course with financial support from the Danish Maritime Fund.

The course will start in January 2015, and it will consist of six modules with two modules per half-year. At the first semester the modules

will be Vessel Management I, which will be about international maritime laws as well as understanding of a shipping organization, and Leadership and Communication, which will be about cultural understanding, long-distance management and human resource management.

The second semester will consist of the modules Vessel Management II and Applied Maritime Economics. Vessel Management II will be about how to optimize the operations of the ships as well as technical management, Lean, ISO 9000 just to mention some of the subjects. Applied Maritime Economics will be about subjects such as budget planning, cost benefit analysis, and supply chain management. An important part of this module is to learn to use the financial management systems, which the shipping companies use.

At the third semester, the modules will be Ship-ping Operation and Applied Project Manage-ment. Shipping Operation will be about risk management and accident evaluation as well as commercial understanding and customer

handling, while Applied Project Management is about docking, ship yard repair, and contract management.

The lessons as well as all the teaching material will be in English, as the school expects many participants from other parts of the world.

- We expect to have participants from other parts of the world, because only few offers of supplementary training are targeted the job as superintendent. The participants will meet three whole days per module – that is six days per half-year here in Copenhagen – the rest of the time the participants will use our E-learning platform, Jan Skovgaard says.

“We are pleased that we have such a strong and diverse group of ships nominated for the award, for the first time it is ever presented” says Rene Wittendorff, CEO of the Media House Maritime Denmark, who initiated the new award.

Two of the five vessels operate in the off-shore sector, the part of the Danish shipping that has experienced the most significant growth in recent years, and one of the areas where the future looks very bright.

The Service vessel Lina is the first ship in the second generation of the Swath-service ships from the Danish Yacht in Skagen, and the only Danish built of the five nominated ships. The second offshore vessel is the installation vessel Sea Challenger, which is owned by A2SEA and is currently engaged in the installation of wind turbines in the Westermost Rough project in the UK.

Bergensfjord is owned by the Danish ship-ping company Fjord Line. It is the second

of two sister ships fueled by what many consider as the fuel of the future - LNG. The second nominated ferry is the ro/ro ship Ark Germania, which use regular fuel but is equipped with two completely independent propulsions.

The fifth and final combatant is the product tanker Nord Geranium, an ingenious design that embraces virtually all the energy saving features a ship today can accommodate.

Which of the five nominated ships will be presented with The Danish Ship of the Year 2014 award, will be decided by a highly qualified committee consisting of Bo Ceup-Simonsen, Thomas Knudsen, Hans Otto Kristensen, Anders Ørgaard Hansen, Henrik Bach, Per Jørgensen and Klaus Kjærulff.

The award will be presented on the Danish Maritime Fair Wednesday, on October 8th.

Five very different vessels have been nominated for The Danish Ship of The Year, an award given for the first time ever this year. ark Germania had to fight through great adversity before it in May, with more than two years delay

was put into operation on DFDS route between Esbjerg and Immingham. The roll on roll off ferry is the first of two sister ships built for the German P + S Werften in Stralsund and finished at Fayard in Munkebo.

The ship is specially constructed to handle military transport tasks within the framework of the so called ARK cooperation. When the military is not in need of the ships assistance, it handles ordinary civilian transport. Ark Germania features two completely independent propulsions, which makes it possible to disconnect one main engine and sail very slowly when desirable. At the same time, the solution provides top safety in transportation. Should there be a main engine failure the ship can continue its journey using the second one. It can also use its shaft generators as electric motors via the auxiliary motors.

nord Geranium is an ECO Handysize product tanker built for the shipping company Norden at the

Guangzhou International Shipyard Ltd. in China. Nord Geranium, along with its sister ship North Gardenia, is one of the most fuel-efficient ships in their class.

Energy efficiency has been obtained through optimized hull lines, shortened bulp and a newly developed MAN engine of the 6SME-B9.3 type. It is a semi-electronic controlled engine and is remarkable for having a low oil consumption throughout the operating range.

Nord Geranium has an EEDI which is 23% better than the requirement for the ships contracting and meets the EEDI requirements up to and including 2024.

fjord Line took a big step towards the future, when the company contracted the two cruise ferries

Stavangerfjord and Bergensfjord. Both ferries are the first in the world of their size to be powered by liquid natural gas LNG, which many consider to be the fuel of the future.

Bergensfjord is the second of the two sister ferries and was deployed on routes between Denmark and Norway in March. The ferry is flying the Danish flag and is specially designed to operate in the North Sea. The ferry, that has a capacity of 1.500 passengers and 600 cars, had its hull built at the Stocznia Gdansk shipyard in Poland, from where it was towed to Bergen Group Fosen for completion. The ferries have already won a number of awards in other contexts.

the Sea Challenger is the second of two new large installations vessels built for A2SEA by Cosco Off-

shore in China. The two ships are identical except for the Sea Challengers crane that has a lifting capacity of 900 tons - a tad bit larger than the crane on the sister ship the Sea Installer.

Like the rest of A2SEA’s fleet, the Sea Challenger is flying the Danish flag and depending on the size, it can transport up to 10 wind turbines at the same time. This is significantly more than the capacity of the first-generation installation vessels, which A2SEA helped to develop.

After a long preparation in Esbjerg, the Sea Challenger is now in the process of installing 35 Siemens wind turbines on Westermost Rough Offshore Wind Farm by Yorkshire, on the east coast of England.

With the 24-meter Swath vessels constructed in carbon fiber, the Danish Yachts shipyard

in Skagen have achieved the commercial success that the yard initially tried to obtain in the market of luxury yachts, an ambition that the financial crisis put an abrupt end to.

The Swath vessels has been developed for the Norwe-gian shipping company Odfjell Wind and Lina is the first ship in the second generation of the concept. The weight has been reduced by 15 percent compared to the four ships of the first generation, which improves the fuel efficiency. The wheelhouse has been changed so there is now a full 360 degree view.

Lina has room for 24 passengers, five crew members and can sail 23 knots even in strong winds because of the ships special design. The ship will be chartered to the energy company E-On.

from large global companies and everything in between. Although the events are mostly located in the Copenhagen area, the rest of the country also plays a part in them. The common theme – that it is all international and in English - has to be extravagant in looks and inspiration.

The topics of the events are different but somehow related, like green shipping, hu-

man resources, e-technology, security and piracy, international trade and development, shipping in the Arctic, finance, education, offshore shipping, global regulation and SCR.

The participants represent a wide section of all the maritime clusters in Denmark and inter-nationally. Information exchange, discussions and visions is sure to be part of the events.

Danish Ports, the Danish Environmental Protection Agency, Danish Energy Authority, Danish Maritime Authority, Maritime Climate Forum, IDA Green Technology, Transport Innovation Network, Aalborg University and Green Ships of the Future.

Kåre Press-Kristensen expects that the discussions at the conference will focus on the existence of a large number of solutions that without high costs can reduce air pollution from ships.

- But it requires international regulation. Air pollution knows no boundaries, so it is good that we have the participation of the President of MECP, which is IMO’s highest environmental authority. We also have the Minister of Environment, who also has a seat in the EU and addresses the topic on the EU level. That means that there are people who can actually do something about this on an international level.

froM shipyards to equipMent suppliers - In Denmark we have a number of equipment manufacturers that are capable of producing equipment that can reduce most of the air pollution from shipping, says Kåre Press-Kristensen. He hopes that we can both get cleaner air in Denmark and develop the Danish companies that produce and implement the environmental friendly technology and equipment that ships need he says. He adds that Denmark used to be a great ship-building nation.

- Everything has moved. So I hope we can have a new generation of Danish companies that do not build ships but instead focus on air cleaning equip-ment for ships on a global basis. We already have the ships and hopefully in the future Denmark could be known as the country that builds efficient equipment that helps to reduce air pollution and therefore prevents a number of deaths and a lot of illness. We actually have the solutions, he says. - We are leading manufacturers of both scrubbers, which remove sulfur

in the emission gases, SCR systems that remove harmful NOx and particle filters for ships. We are the best in the world in a number of these areas, and we need to take better advantage of that.

- But of course it requires international regulations on air pollution and general enforcement of the rules, says Kåre Press-Kristensen and stresses that especially enforcement of the regulations is an important issue at the conference.

In Sweden for example, ships have been caught but it has had no conse-quences for them. We all know that by the beginning of next year, you can save a million kroner by not following the sulfur regulations on a trip from the North Sea to Gdansk and back. Lack of enforcement also means that people not abiding to these regulations can outmatch those who do. This will not only harm the society but also the industry and the environment, he says.

The conference, entitled “Cleaner and more energy efficient shipping” will take place on October 6th at the Hilton hotel by the Copenhagen Airport.

Focus on cleaner shipping Air pollution from shipping causes approximately 50.000 premature deaths annually in Europe. In Denmark shipping causes as much air pollution as all Danish land-based sources combined, because we have so much shipping all around us. Therefore, we have interest in improving the air quality in Denmark as well as on the European level, says Kåre Press-Kristensen from Økologisk Råd, who are co-organizers of the cleaner shipping event at the Danish Maritime Days.

a good start is a race half won! This is a man-tra in the world of yacht racing. Can this

mantra be applied to merchant shipping and the maritime industry in the development of new technologies and their use? Are the winners in this field also the ones that got a good start?

Does it actually pay off for the shipowners to act quickly in applying new technology? Or is it more rewarding to simply follow the slipstream of those shipowners that already have invested in lowering pollution, have a higher safety standard, pay more attention to the climate and in general are as energy efficient as technically possible?

Also, does it make any economic sense for those businesses that develop new technologies to focus on the emerging energy, climate and environmental area when the international legislation is lagging behind?

These are the key issues that will be debated when representatives from the Danish govern-ment, shipowners and maritime suppliers meet at the conference: “First movers in safety, green solutions and technologies. Possibilities and challenges.”

Unfortunately, in the past year, IMO has postponed the implementation dates for new technologies and, thereby, contributed to create uncertainty regarding the future. At the same time, it is seen that the enforcement of existing legislation is either very partial or completely missing. If we want an innovative industry, we have to have good global framework conditions for the innovative maritime businesses.

during Danish Maritime Days. Both the Danish equipment manufacturers, component suppli-ers and shipyards have full focus on safety and environmentally, climate and energy friendly shipping when they meet with shipowners, shipyards, journalists, government officials, analysts, organisations and politicians from all over the world during the maritime week from the 6-10 October 2014.

In addition to the more than 100 maritime businesses that exhibit at the Danish Maritime Fair at the Bella Center, the extensive week-long program will also offer a number of seminars and events with special focus on the green and energy efficient solutions to shipping.

- It’s a conference that is usually held annually, but this year we made it a part of the Danish Maritime Days and it will be in English. And we also have some English speakers, and that makes it a more international port conference, and that is new for us, says coordinator Jan Boyesen from the Transport Economics As-sociation, TØF.

- We expect to focus on international trends, like what is happening in companies, what kind of development are they going through and how does it affect the ports. Next, we focus on what the Port of Gothenburg is currently working on and what kind of development they are going through. Finally, we will focus on the EU Commission and what is happening in relation to the area of policy and funding. - This year we expect to have a little room to grow now that the event is international. It will be held at the Bella Center as a one day conference and participants also have access to see the Danish Maritime Fair with over 150

exhibitors at the same time. It provides a posi-tive synergy, he says.

Waiting increases interest - So far, the new concept has not gotten people’s attention as we hoped, but we expect to change that now that we are cooperating with the Danish Shipowners Association and the Danish Industry, on sending out new invitations.

- Everything is pretty much in place for the event and we can now really begin promoting it, he says.

one level up The TØF’s conference will now have an interna-tional concept.- It is like we are moving up to the next level this time. We are looking at the international perspectives and how they affect us. But we will still maintain the usual opportunities to meet other ports and to network.

Participation from representatives of foreign ports is also expected.

- We do not yet know how many are coming, but the interest is there. We are currently promoting ourselves internationally, and we will have to wait and see if it pays off, says Jan Boyesen. He expects that the international participation will be primarily from European ports.

- The vast majority of participants will be Danish ports supplemented by foreign port people. We look forward to the whole experience and we will see whether it is the right way to go. If nothing else it is new and really exciting he says. He also mentions that the conference offers input from the Port of Gothenburg, Maersk Line, Unifeeder, OECD and the European Commission. In addition to the competitive position of ports and business opportunities, the conference will also focus on performance indicators for ports and infrastructure.

The conference is a one day event and will be held on October 7th at the Bella Center.

“This event, which takes place on October 7th, focuses on the different strengths within the maritime industry. On the naval base in Frederikshavn, there will be three vessels in different classes open to people and a large number of suppliers will present their solutions” says project worker Nicoline Krintel to Danish Maritime. “It has also been important for us to emphasize that the Danish Maritime Days is not only an event that takes place in Copenhagen. There are actually many dif-ferent places in Denmark that are part of the maritime industry. This is something that we really want people to see” she says.

Therefore it was a very obvious choice to place events in Frederikshavn and Aalborg. “There are many different companies at this event, and of course they have different agendas. Some are there with the intention of selling, while others are primarily there to be seen. Many companies find it important to support the Danish Maritime Days, to show how much we can actually do in Denmark”. Among the many events during the Danish Maritime Days, this is one of the larger ones outside Copenhagen.

- In 2010 we promised the Danish Ship-owners Association to employ around 120 ordinary seamen annually, says Søren Nørgaard Thomsen, Esvagt’s CEO and also Chairman of the Danish Shipowners Association of 2010.

- I would not say we vacuum the mar-ket for young people, but we take the ones we can find from the school ships Denmark and Georg Stage and from different schools. Those from school ships have an advantage, in that they have already tried to be on the sea and already have a sense of whether or not they can go the distance. This means that we do not have to waste time, en-ergy and money on young people who don’t know if they can handle being on a guard ship without getting seasick for example. If that is the case they usually stop after a short period of time, says Søren Nørgaard Thomsen.

New opportunities Esvagt A/S is quite active in monitoring the young people on their way through the system and can help people with hiring opportunities along the way.

- We have quite a few, who started out being ordinary seamen and have sub-sequently become able seamen. Some then choose to progress and study to become a navigator. We are very eager to support them by for example taking

a replacement hire now and then as a way to help them financially during their studies. We think it is important to hold on to those who want to sail in our company and we need them in the coming years says Hans Richard Pedersen, head of Crewing Department.

Esvagt is facing a major recruitment ef-fort in the years to come. 150 additional seamen have to be added to the existing staff of 750 people. This is a consequence of the new business areas and delivery of new ships.

It is already happening, as Esvagt Clau-dine came to Esbjerg from the shipyard in Singapore. A sister ship, Esvagt Cornelia will follow in November and according to schedule the first of the two advanced wind turbine support vessels will be de-livered from Havyard, Leirvik in Norway in 2014 and followed by a sister ship in April 2015. In addition to that, two more C-ships from ASL Marine in Singapore will be delivered in the autumn of 2015.

- This means that we must find around 150 new employees for our sailing vessels over the next 12 months. I am sure that we will get the job done and we believe that it is special to sail in Esvagt with its navigation pattern and the holiday arrangements. We fell that we will be attractive for new seamen, says Nick Vejlgaard Ørskov.

the largest employer oF orDinary seamen

Esvagt A/S, which is short for Esvagt Ship Security Company A/S, is the largest employer of ordinary seamen in Denmark. They hire newly qualified seamen who have not yet had the six months of sailing that gives them the right to call themselves experienced. A total of 120 mainly young people are currently working at Esvagt in a kind of in-ternships towards the next step on the career lad-der.

the story of the crew changes with Esvagts so-called change ship Esvagt Beta, starts on

a Monday night in August, just as the summer weather has been replaced by gale weather, and the needle on the wind gauge is around 18-20 m/sec. with heavy rain. We are at the docks in Esbjerg, just outside Esvagt new headquarters, which has only been inhabited by office staff for a few days.

On board the Esvagt Beta, 27 men have reported for work (They start at midnight on departure). On this trip, it is only men who have reported. There are women working in Esvagt. In fact, there are nine Esvagt seafarers staff that are women. There are 800 employees, 750 of which are sail-ing including the nine women (two mates, two cooks and five Able seamen). The trip usually goes around to the ships in the Danish sector of the North Sea.

The reason that there are no women on this journey to the ships in the Danish sector is that the ships at these stations are Esvagt group III ships. They are converted fishing vessels, which were the first in the fleet, and that despite large investments in life extension they cannot ac-commodate crews of different sexes. This means

separate toilets and bathing facilities. Despite the million kroner renovation of the vessels, it has not been possible to add these facilities. So the female seafarers in Esvagt sail on the newly-built C-ships from Singapore or X-bow-ships, and preferably on tasks in the Norwegian sector. In the same week, replacements were sailed to Esvagt Alpha, who picked up people in Stavanger/Sandnes, where they were flown by chartered flights from Esbjerg airport.

departure Everyone musters on the ship deck, where by roll-call it is confirmed that everyone is actually present on board. In the hours before, the arriving seafarers met in the garage next to the galley, where there is fun and laughter and the traditional muster menu is served: Hot dogs with red sausages. It is a tradition for people sailing out for Esvagt.

When the muster is over, people disappear to their respective chambers to get some sleep before it’s time to change ships. Meanwhile the Esvagt Beta and its permanent crew let the moorings go and maneuver the ship out of the docks. The docks are crowded, because a lot of the service vessels operating with

wind turbines and offshore has sailed to the quiet water behind Esbjerg ports piers. It is not possible to work with cabling in wind farms or acid cleaning of drill strings when the weather is so rough, as it was that night.

The Esvagt Beta is battling its way across the North Sea to the Tyra fields, located roughly in the middle of the Danish sector. Basically it is a little unusual that the change ship goes to the ships lying in the middle, but it has a specific purpose. There is an officer on the Esvagt Preserver, who is to be moved to the Esvagt Server, which is located at the Dan field in the southern part of the area. This gives us some extra miles to sail, but so be it, explains shipmaster Jann Bach, Esvagt Beta.

- Normally, we sail, depending on the weather, to one end of the “chain” of ships that needs crewchange, so we do not have to sail back and forth as we will on this trip, says Jann Bach.

It takes longer than expected to reach the first crew change at the Tyra field. It is the wind and weather that are against the Esvagt Beta, who is working hard in the sea and the bow often sticks out of the water.

With the Water bus to WorkMaritime Denmark joined a group of Danish seamen reporting for work on 10 Esvagt ships in the station in the North Sea. This provided the writer of these lines and now the readers with an insight into one of the most spectacular ways for someone to get to their workplace. They are transported across the water with Fast Rescue Boats (FRB) all year round and in basically any weather. The Esvagt people annually have up to 25.000 operations with the FRB, which is equivalent to 70 on a daily basis, or at least two per. ships per day.

Claus Rexen Petersen, age 29, is an experienced able seaman/boatswain on Esvagt Beta. For the past seven years he has sailed for Esvagt and the past two years he has been on Esvagt Beta. His per-manent place during operations with crew changes is to handle the winch and the davit that lifts the incoming FRB’s up to the main deck of Esvagt Beta.

It is not an easy task, because lifting the boats out of the wa-ter along with the interaction

between the sea and two ships of different movements requires experience and a great overview, says Claus R. Petersen.

All landings and launches are also being videotaped. It is almost like ordinary video surveillance only with a handheld camera. They are mostly made to have documentation, in case anything should happen. Otherwise they are simply stored for a period of time says Claus R. Petersen.

petersenWell, did you sleep? Is the first question from boatswain Claus Rexen Pe-tersen. It’s hard to sleep when the ship moves as much as it did, but you still get to lie down in your bunk if nothing else he says on his way out on deck to prepare the FRB’s.

first ship It was the Esvagt Protector, which was the first ship to be changed crew on. It happened Tuesday at 11:20, but was actually scheduled around at 09 o’clock in the morning, but due to the weather it was delayed. The Esvagt Protector is stationed at Tyra West, where there is currently a lot of activity with the renovation of the entire structure (the fixed installation that produces gas) and throughout the summer, the wind turbine installation vessel Sea Fox 5 has been at the platforms as a floating hotel for the many craftsmen who are working there.

The Esvagt Protector will have a change of four men and it consists of a master, a chief mate and two able seamen. It takes some time, because reports have to be given to the various replacements. Therefore, it is the Esvagt Protectors FRB that comes to the Esvagt Beta to pick up the master and chief mate on the first trip. They are then sailed to the Esvagt Protector and when the two ship’s assistants are also sailed across, the reporting between those who are going home and those who will meet on the job begin. It takes around an hour and then the ones, who are going home from work, are sailed to the Esvagt Beta on two trips back and forth.

All operations are done on dry ground, in the way that the boats are lifted out of the water so the people who enter the boat do so directly from the deck or leave the boat directly to the deck. The boat is launched by the

winch operator (on guard ships on station, it is often the chief engineer), who releases the hook and the boat can sail off to the changing ship. When the boat is approaching, they communicate via radio with the captain on the bridge so that he and his people are ready to receive the FRB from the sea. When the clear sign has been given, the boat sails to the yellow line which is painted on the hull of Esvagt Beta. The hook then catches the boat and lifts it out of the water with a very fast winch, with speeds up to 60 m per minute.

coach Today there is actually an additional man that has to be changed for the Esvagt Protector. That is the chef Kim Cleverly, who officially has the title of chef-coach. He will be on board for a period of time to provide tips and advice for the two able seamen who take turns to cook on board. The small group III ships usually do not have a chef on board.

- Over the years, we have found that an important part of the crew wellbeing, is that they have a good and healthy diet on board. The reports we get back to the office all say that it looks good and we can also see that in the way people look. Despite that, we still think that it may benefit people with some good ad-vice. Therefore we send our chefs coach around the different vessels to help improve the cooking. There is basically nothing that is sacred. Everything from the galley hygiene to dietary advice and ideas for pampering the rest of the crew on selected days are included in the opportunities offered by chefs-coach says Nick Vejlgaaard Ørskov who is the Head of People and Human Resources.

Bjørn Andersen, age 63, is an experienced able seaman and is on his way home from a tour of duty in Esvagt Protector, who served by the Tyra field. He has 24 years of experience in Esvagt, where he at a mature age chose to go back on the sea again.

- I actually started as “adult apprentice” in 1994, when after 20 years of work ashore wanted to be out on the sea again. It was not easy, as I had previously sailed in the Navy and actually had to start all over again in the maritime, says Bjørn Andersen.

He is looking forward to coming home to Vejle and seeing his and the family’s

new kitchen.

- When I went to work 14 days ago, we had no kitchen for several weeks, but luckily the weather was the so nice that we could cook on the grill outdoors. As far as I have heard it is supposed to be done by now, says Bjørn Andersen.

He is also the union representative of the ship assistants in 3F that organize around a third of his colleagues.

- I think the number of member’s is in-creases slightly, but i admit it is hard to have a conversation with my colleagues except for the trips back and forth and at meetings on land, says Bjørn Andersen.

- That was actually not planned. We have a number of people on a daily basis who have a hotline and take care of various tasks, such as serving vessels on departure and arrival, and it was a coincidence that it was the Head of HR, who was on duty on that day says Nick Vejlgaard Ørskov.

While the change of crew is going on, on board the Esvagt Protector, a simultaneous operation has started on the Esvagt Preventer, which is located near the Esvagt Protector. This is possible because the distance between Tyra East field and Tyra West field is quite short and by placing the ships between the two fields, the operation can be performed consecutively, thus saving time. Technically, when a guard ship is doing a crew change, it is reporting to the rig or platform manager that the change is going to happen. This means that he will stop activities that require special attention from the guard ship. Like work in areas where there is a risk of falling overboard. Those who are engaged in such tasks are asked to go inside and drink a cup of coffee until the guard ship is ready again. The guard ship then reports back via the VHF as soon as the crew change operation is over.

The crew change on the Esvagt Preventer in-cludes a master, a chief engineer and a able seaman, while the chief mate is moved to the Esvagt Server.

the next ship Crew changes at the two ships at the Tyra fields are over by 12:30, and have moved 15 people back and forth across the ocean. The FRB has been eight times out of the water by Esvagt Beta (four times for each of the two vessels). The ship now continues south towards the Dan field, where a meeting is being prepared with the Esvagt anchor handling vessel Esvagt Server. The vessel was purchased in 2012 for a contract with Maersk Oil and Gas (MOG) for the movement of rigs on MOGs area and to transport cargo and goods between the different installations and platforms. This is particularly the many tasks of moving parts, tools and other goods that are to big to be moved between the Dan-field A platform to the B-platform.

There is a walkway which sets the limit for the size of packages that can be moved. That is where the Esvagt Server comes into the picture. It can be used as a floating moving truck for such operations and can receive a box of maybe two x two meters, that can loaded onto the deck with a crane from the platform and then move 100 meters to the next platform, where the crane lifts it up. The Esvagt ships have serviced platforms with this freight service that in English is called “inter-field shuttling” for many years.

The Esvagt Beta has reached the Esvagt Server just north of the Dan field. A chief mate, who was picked up on the Esvagt Preserver, will replace Thomas Jonasen who will disembark the Esvagt Server. Going along on the change ship is Pallet Refsgaard who has the title of Fleet Manager in the operations on board.

- I am relatively new in the Esvagt organization, and I am on a tour of the various ships to get an idea of what and how things are run here in the company and to greet our staff says Palle Refsgaard.

The operation with lifting the two FRB is over at 13:50, and the course is set further south towards Esvagt Bravo. It is a 30-minute journey to the Esvagt Bravo, who is guarding the drilling rig Ensco 72, which is currently doing another drilling (DanX 1-X) in the Dan-field structure. The Esvagt Bravo is the oldest ship in the Es-vagt fleet, and it has been sailing since it was converted from a trawler in March 1982. It was assigned to the North Sea, in what we know, is the longest station keeping so far in Esvagt. It took 22 months before the ship was back in port in Esbjerg. In April 2014, the ship went into service again after receiving new living quarters, as the third of the oldest ships that have been life extended in the Søby Shipyard. Rene Andersen, 46, is an experienced able seaman and is on his way home from a tour of duty on the Esvagt Bravo, where he is permanently attached. On the journey from Esvagt Bravo and return to Esbjerg via several other crew changes, he had a lookout watch on Esvagt Beta.

He was heading to his home in Aalbæk in Vendsyssel, but only briefly. After a few

days at home, he went to South Jutland for a vacation at an inn with a golf resort, with his family.

- Not only am I going to play golf, I am also going to the Tønder Festival to listen to a lot of good music. We usually have the opportunity to play golf at the same time as this particular festival. Rene Andersen has been working in Esvagt in seven years.

man. It all goes according to plan and an hour later the reporting and lifting of the FRB are done. It’s all over at 14:20, where the new skipper of Esvagt Bravo reports to rig that the ship is ready. The Esvagt Beta subsequently sets its sails and travels north towards the Esvagt Charlie, which is one of the newer class III vessels. In fact, it is one of two slightly larger fishing vessels, which was bought and rebuilt in 1990/91, when there was a need for more tonnage.

Concurrently the seafarers also expressed desire for more comfort among, and some of these requests were handled with the Esvagt Delta in 1990 and Esvagt Charlie in 1991 as a step towards the new Esvagt 2000 project, which turned into the C-class from 2004 onwards. The newest ship in the class is the Esvagt Claudine, who in early September came to Esbjerg directly from the shipyard in Singapore after traveling around South Africa. Another sister ship will be delivered later this year and two more C-ships will be delivered to the fleet in 2015.

the fourth ship The Esvagt Charlie is the fourth ship on the program that is visited by water bus Esvagt Beta, where a master, one able seaman and a chef are ready on the main deck and ready to be transported to the ship that is going to be their home for the next 14 days. The ship is on

standby by the Skjold field in the western part of the Danish sector, close to the center line of the North Sea, which forms the boundary between the English and the Danish sector. The change of the three crew members once again go as planned without any drama, in three-meter high waves and a wind meter that has dropped to around 14-15 m/sec. The routine and experience in sailing makes the four FRB lifts over by 15:40.

The next ship is the Esvagt Echo, located by the Gorm field further north. Here there will be seven people changing ships. Four people will be transferred to the Esvagt Beta and the four will be replaced by three, a master, a chief mate and a able seaman. The reason why the fourth one is not replaced is due to the fact that there is an extra engineer.

The operation by Esvagt Echo is the most com-prehensive on this tour with Esvagt Beta. All in all it results in 10 lifts of the FRB, which is up and down 10 times on both ships. The explanation for this is partly the seven people, but also that there is a large amount of cargo that has to be moved with the FRB and they have limited capacity. The Esvagt Echo and Esvagt Beta exchange laundry ashore. In addition to that there is a new gas grill, which the crew has purchased for Esvagt Echo

and a large shipment of goods that will later be transferred to the fishing vessel Gitte. It is currently stationed as a guard ship at a pipeline under construction near the Hejre field.

Gitte, along with several other fishing vessels have been hired to guard an uncovered pipeline. Gitte needs a large number of boxes of soda and several packs of frozen shrimp, so Esvagt Beta and Esvagt Echos FRB has been granted the curious task of sailing frozen fish from shore to a fishing boat in the middle of the North Sea. All of the little journeys between the Esvagt Beta and the Esvagt Echo runs smoothly and finishes at 16:50 and the Esvagt Beta continues north towards the Valdemar field where the Esvagt Preventer is awaiting a crew change. Meanwhile the sunshine is slowly disappearing, the wind increases and it is all seasoned with some rain showers.

The Esvagt Preventer is the sixth ship on today’s tour and again it is an operation that takes about an hour, as the master is to be replaced along with the chief engineer and a able seaman. Not minding the weather, the crew is changed in four lifts with the FRB and it is all done by 18:55. The Esvagt Beta fights its way towards the South Arne field, where the crew of Esvagt Carpathia is waiting.

There are two hours of sailing between the Valdemar field and the South Arne field, where besides the guard ship, the shuttle tanker Navion Oslo that loads from the submerged tank, is also there. The Esvagt Beta reaches the ship at 20:50 and it does not take long to replace the chief mate with a new one that has had a full day on board the ship and has had a 12-16 shift in the wheelhouse along the way.

After Esvagt Carpathia, which is actually named after the Cunard liner Carpathia that was the first ship that came to the rescue of the Titanic in 1912 as it collided with an iceberg in the Atlantic and sank, is the Esvagt Kappa. This will be the eighth ship of today’s tour and Esvagt Kappa is changing a chief engineer. It is now after dark and it is 22:15 and it takes to lifts with the FRB.

the last oneThe last two ships on the Esvagt Betas tour is the Esvagt Gamma, which is located at the Siri field and the Esvagt Celeste, who is on standby at the Nini field. The two fields are more than four hours away from the Hejre field and an additional two hours to the Nini field. Because all this happens in the middle of the night, and the activity in the fields are low, it is possible for the Esvagt Celeste to sail to the Siri field, and that makes it possible to conduct both crew changes from the same position. It happens at. 2:00 and is exemplary short with a lift to each vessel to replace a able seaman for both the Esvagt Celeste and Esvagt Gamma.

Finally, the job is completed. 27 men have been transported to the service of the 10 ships, while 23 men are now on their way home for a holiday (or a change of jobs). The journey back to Esbjerg takes around 11-12 hours, with an expected arrival later that day just after noon. That roughly means that the Esvagt Beta will be at the quay at 13:15.

Upon arrival in Esbjerg, new hectic activities start on board the Esvagt Beta. The 23 men who are on their way to take time off, are meeting in the ship’s theater for a security meeting. Here, three representatives from the office will discuss events and initiatives, including a short briefing on the company’s general state by CEO Søren Nørgaard Thomsen.

- I am committed to showing up every time the people are gathered on an incoming or outgoing operation, if I have no other tasks to attend to. Yesterday I was in Esbjerg airport to talk to the seafarers that we sent by plane to Stavanger to replace the crew on the ships that we have in the Norwegian sector. I like to talk to them and hear what they have to say and sense the atmosphere. I do the same with the people coming to Esbjerg if possible, says Søren Nørgaard Thomsen.

Thomas Jonasen, 41, is chief mate and was returning from a tour of duty on the anchor handling vessel Esvagt Server and on the trip home he had the typical chief mate shifts on the Esvagt Beta (04-08 and 16-20). In fact, his journey with the Esvagt Beta was his last in Esvagt, as he after few days of vacation at home is starting a new job at Maersk Supply Service. There he will continue to be an auditor of the fleet of supply/anchor handling vessels in the light blue hull color.

- Yes, I am kind of a restless person from Copenhagen descent and after a few years something new has to happen. I have been here for three years now (Esvagt) and I ap-plied for another job and got it. I have previ-ously been in Maersk Supply Service, and was stationed in Brazil for several years. Like now, I wanted to try something new and dif-ferent. That is just how my mind works and I have to live with it says Thomas Jonasen.

There are many years of experience from Esvagt service presented in the picture above. There is exactly 70 years of experi-ence between two masters and an able seaman. - Well, it’s not like we’re discovering anything out of the ordinary here on these trips, but it is nice to talk to you fellow seamen about different situations and issues at hand. We also talk on the phone if there is a need for that, but it is often more inspiring to talk to the others on the way home from our ships, says Jan Schmidt.

The three seamen’s overall experience in Esvagt goes back to the mid-1990s when the company was smaller than it is today. While conversing about the evolution of ships, safety and performing tasks back then in the 1990s, different things were mentioned that would defiantly not be accepted today.

- Not that we did anything wrong but we are just a little bit wiser now and we have the developed equipment that have changed the process since then, says master Poul Jensen.

One good example that he mentions from back in the 1990s, was that the ship had to be stationed at a maximum range of 500 meters from an installation or a rig. Now things have been changed around and the guard ship has to be at least 500 meters away from the installation or rig and instead move in with FRB’s if something happens.

When the security meeting is over, people leave the Esvagt Beta and their trip to Vejle, Aalborg, Copenhagen, Marstal, White Sands and all the other Danish cities where people reside begins.

neW tasks Just because the crew change in the North Sea was over, it did not mean that the Esvagt Beta and its permanent crew were off and they were already preparing for new tasks. When the ship arrived at the quay, a cleaning team came onboard to clean the ship and prepare it to take 18 English wind turbine technicians on board. The crew was also extended with another five people, including another cook.

- For the next three weeks we will be sailing with English wind turbine technicians by a German wind farm and this basically means that we will be a floating hotel for the group of technicians in four/six hour shift. A wind-catamaran will pick up and return people from the wind turbines to us says master Jann Bach.

- We have upgraded the staffing in the galley, because there are far more people to be served and we will also have to provide them with lunch packs that people can bring to the wind turbines. This means a great deal of stress in the galley.

The technical team reported at 18:00 on the same day. However, the ship was stationed in the dock for a few days before the work began. This was due to the weather conditions in the wind farm.

While the Esvagt Beta was employed as a wind turbine technician hotel ship, crew shifts were performed by the Esvagt Alpha, which has room for 48 people on each trip. Typically the changing ships operate from Monday to Wednesday in the Danish sector of the North Sea, while on Friday’s there are departures to some of the vessels in the Norwegian sector. They usually return to Esbjerg early Monday morning and the tour of the Danish sector continues.

The Esvagt Beta was purchased in the Falkland Islands in 2008. At that time the ship was a trawler, but has since been adapted to act as crew change ship. It was originally built in Gdynia in 1991 for a local Polish fishing company. The ship is 76 meters in length and 14 meters in width.

The Esvagt Alpha was originally built as buoy ship for and was built by Svendborg Shipyard in 1971. In 2000, the ship replaced by new tonnage and Esvagt managed to secure the ship on a bareboat charter agreement, which ran until 2007, when the ship was finally purchased by Esvagt. In 2000 the original Esvagt ship, the Esvagt Dana, had reached a high age (built in 1937) and was put up for sale. Through the Tvind schools it came to Holland and was in Esbjerg during the recent Tall Ships Race.

the year is 2014. We are in a modern industrial building on Generatorvej in Herlev, at the

outskirts of Copenhagen. Sitting at the table in the lunch room is Iver C. Weilbach & Co. CEO Torben Frerks. Almost 259 years after Iver Jensen Borger started his production of compasses, it is now his job to close this traditional part of the business.

- This decision has not been easy to make for the board, says Torben Frerks.

- But we just have to realize that time has run out for a production like ours. We have been manufacturing classic navigational instruments, but the market has slowly disappeared and has been replaced by electronic instruments. But we are closing a financially stable company and this is by no means a bankruptcy. A part of the business continues, but will continue with new owners.

The CEO explains that the closure has happened due to the only remaining employee at the plant. He had grown tired of being alone and that demanded action. That is why we are now shutting down.

started in christianshavn The production of compasses started out in Christianshavn. Later it moved to Amaliegade in Copenhagen and then to Toldbodgade. In

the past, the company had three main areas, which were production of compasses, charts and compass repair.

Historically there was also a period when the company was split in two. Into Ejner Weilbach and Iver C. Weilbach, but they were later put back together again.

- With a mechanical production going and electronics beginning to enter the maritime industry, they did not jump on the electron-ics wave. They stuck with what they knew. The company could have developed into an electronics company if they had reacted back then, but today it is no longer an option. The investment you would have to make would be much too large for us. We don’t have the finances or skills to do so, Torben Frerks explains in a firm voice.

- So we did not get on the electronic wave. And in fact, what is happening now, is just a delayed consequence of it ,says Torben Frerks. He refers to the closure of the factory in Herlev, which took place with effect from July 1st.

a neW start - When we went into software and data, we reached new heights and today Iver C. Weilbach & Co. is once again at the top, Torben Frerks says.

- About half of our business is now digital while the other half is on paper. There are approxi-mately 120 companies like us worldwide. In the paper part, we are in the Top-20. On the digital side we are ranked in the top 3 or top 5, depending on how you see it.

- A few years ago, we opened a sales office in Singapore and we are now expanding it. We have started production of our own soft-ware via an Offshore Development Center in Bangladesh. We have production of nautical data in Poland. The main business is still here in Denmark, in Toldbodgade in Copenhagen.

- The paper part of the business is being run from Copenhagen and includes: paper charts, paper books, etc. We produce a small part of it ourselves but the vast majority is agency sales. In total, we have about 250 agencies.

Sales, hotline, customer service and roll out to the ships are also run from Toldbodgade. But this will hardly continue for the next 259 years.

The year is 1755. Denmark is ruled by the autocratic king Frederick the 5th. The year before, the Danish state has taken the forts on the Gold Coast of Africa, and now the state also takes over the West Indies. Both placed the trade opens up for regular Danish merchant ships. This created a big market for new compasses. The 33-year-old Iver Jensen Borger knows that his time is now. On November 24th 1755 he graduates with a master in the Boat, flag and compass maker profession in the city of Copenhagen, and subsequently founding the company Iver C. Weilbach & Co.
