Main Square

It was the center of the old colonial city. The

Cathedral of Lima, the Government palace and

the Provincial City Hall of Lima are located in its

perimeter. At its center, there is a seventeenth

century bronze fountain.

Cathedral of limaIt is placed where the first Main Church of Lima was.The interior is austere, although it shelters realhistoric jewels like the finely carved wood pews ofthe Baltasar Noguera choir, different side altars, andthe remains of Francisco Pizarro. In addition you canvisit the Museum of Religious Art that possesses animportant collection of canvases, sculptures, chalicesand chasubles.

Government PalaceIt was the residence of Francisco Pizarro (1535) whobuilt it on the land that used to be occupied byTaulichusco, chief of the Rimac Valley. Since then thepalace has been the center of the political power inPeru. It burnt down and was rebuilt in the 1920´s. Itfeatures many patios and rooms dedicated toimportant people of Peruvian history and carefullydecorated with notable art pieces. Every morning at11:45 A.M the patio of Honor is the stage for thechanging of the guard, soldiers of the prestigiousHúsares de Junín Battalion.

Museum of the Central Reserve Bank of PeruIt contains tree main thematic exhibition areas:Archeology, Contemporary Peruvian Painting andPopular Art. The Museum is responsible for therecently restored Upper Tribunal of Accounts and theNumismatic Museum

National MuseumA large collection of original pieces that correspond to the differentpre-Hispanic epochs of Peruvian history are on display, the mostinteresting being the replica of the Lord of Sipan tomb. The museumalso has works of Colonial, Republican, popular and moderncontemporary art, as well as ethnographic pieces. Today, they alsoput on very important temporary exhibitions and cultural activities.

Museo Nacional de Antropología, Arqueología e Historia Natural.It integrates the entire Peruvian archeological and historical processand houses one of the most complete pre-Columbian collections ofceramosc, textiles and fine metal Works with pieces from theChavín, Paracas, Nasca, Mochica, Tiahunaco, Pucará, Chimú,Chachapoyas and Inca cultures. There are also rooms and galleriesthat exhibit Colonial and Republican pieces: an art gallery withcanvasses from Cusco School, a complete collection of portraits ofthe Viceroy, iconography of the liberators and other illustriouspeople, and portraits of presidents and figures of Peruvian history.

Amano MuseumYou will find archeological pieces there as ceramicsfrom the Kotosh, Moche, Chimú, Cupisnique andNasca cultures. An important collection of pre-Hispanic textiles is on display, chronologicallyorganized, the Chancay (Central Coast) culturalpieces being the most impressive.

Museo de OroStarted from the personal collection of MiguelMujica Gallo who throughout his life broughttogether different originals and replicas of pre-Incacultures, the most important being the Mochica andChimú. Additionally, there is a Weapon Museum withpieces that date from the sixteenth century.

Aliaga HouseBeing built with quincha (anti-seismic buildingmaterial) and adobe on top of existing pre-Hispanicfoundations, its rooms had to be adapted to anirregular distribution and placed on different levels.The main façade possesses a Republican era balcony.It has lovely patios; the first is covered in nineteenthcentury Italian marble and the second is adornedwith an old bronze fountain. The house has belongedto the same family since the year it was built (1535)and today is the location of different cultural events.

Rafael Larco Herrera Archeological MuseumThis features a large private collection of pre-Hispanic art especially works of ceramic, gold, andtextiles. In addition it provides the largest collectionof erotic figurines and mummies from the Chavín,Chimú, Nazca and Inca cultures.

Pucllana or Juliana HuacaIt is a pre-Inca pyramid of adobe bricks. It was one ofthe most important administrative and ceremonialcenters of the Lima culture, settled in the areas ofthe Chancay, Chillón, rimac and Lurin valleys from200 A.D – 700 A.D. Sometimes events or musicalshows take place there. You can also find a sitemuseum that exhibits pieces found in theexcavations.

Pachacamac Archeological complexIt was the most important pre-Inca ceremonialcenter on the Peruvian coast. The main buildingmaterial was mud. Around the complex, there areplaces, plazas and temples (some of them restored),the most important being the Temple of the sun andthe Acllahuasi, both built during the Inca reign andthe best preserved parts of the area. You will find asite museum that displays pieces found during theexcavation.
