COURSE INFORMATIONCatalogue description:1353. Digital Media I - Prerequisite: AutoCAD. An introduc-tion to the use of the computer as a design drawing tool withan emphasis on conceptual knowledge and computing skillsfor design communication. Levels: Undergraduate - TTUCredits: 3 semester credit hours

NAAB STUDENT PERFORMANCECRITERIA 2009A.3 Visual Communication Skills: Ability to use appropriaterepresentational media, such as traditional graphic and digi-tal technology skills, to convey essential formal elements at

each stage of the programming and design process.

COURSE OVERVIEWThe course intent is to develop the ability to use representa-tional tools and methods. Students are exposed to effectivevisual communication strategies using arrange of media, such as analog and digital drawings and graphics, to sup-port each stage of the design process. The rst stage of thiscourse introduces a general knowledge about images madeof pixels: type, size, resolution and all those basics informa-tion that are necessary to acquire in order to be ef cientwith graphics. The second stage of the course focuses onthe use of Adobe Photoshop. Students learn about how tomanipulate and edit pixel-images. They work with a full setof actions involved with reiteration, transformation, editing,

ltering and layering. The history of all these applicationsmust be documented graphically. The third stage exploresvectors and diverse ways to deal with lines and drawings.

Students implements all the features of Ator, including les export techniques from ot(Photoshop,AutoCAD) and text features. Thegoes more in depth on layout and additional gracations using Adobe-In-Design, instrumental for gstudents more pro ciency in their portfolioand organization. Students work on weekly assign

COURSE STRUCTUREThe course is designed to work both ascourse associated withARCH 1411, Architectural Design Studio I, analone course.Students apply the course digital knowledgetheir studio design process, in order to be efprepared on graphical representations. Guidedstructor and the coordinator, the section assisresponsible for every in-class aspect of theirtion of this course: from taking attendance, delivery, to assessment. A typical class day willthing from a program related presentation, aan assigned reading, to a review of completsection meets nominally for two hours eachignated times. The section assistants will haveweek of regular of ce hours for students instudent with a median skill and acumen level sh9 hours of study a week outside class to suplete the coursework.

A picture can host several different events, ob-jects, environments, and so on. This particularassignment will examine how these picturesformulate a relationship with the prescribedobject and its connectiveness with each seg-ment the object inherits. This is an assessmentof detail and arrangement of photos for a typeof collage/photomontage. This process will

explore how certain qualities of the image canplay a role in arrangement and connection tothe next image or images. Certain aspects ofthe image such as straight-edge conditions orlinear projections can help develop the collageso that each image has a connected relation-ship to the next.

An exploration of collages and vector lines. The purpose is to understand the general con-cept of a lineweights through extraction andabstraction of pro le and shadow lines. Thisis a two part assignment because the rst partwill entail a collage of a building in persepctiveview and then by the general concept of thebuilding delivered in a vector-base output com-

    position.

The vector exploration is the examining of howvector lines and simple geometry can play asigni cant role in any composition. Lines helpillustrate an image or detail drawing as a visualrepresentation. Geometry is just about every-where and thing we see, touch, and feel. Lineshelp provoke a system whole into a complex orsimple series of vectors that emerge into geo-metric shapes.

When you draw a line from a point to anotherpoint, you begin to articulate a certain dialoguebetween space and moment. This variancebetween the two points can illustrate a uniquesystem that is governed by a set of rules or-dained by the director. When the line continuesto expand from its origin, it begins to transpireinto a new order, delivered by a degree or a

juxtaposition of other lines. As lines begin tomeet one another, intersections are exploredas vertices where a object or shape emerges.

This study will investigate the potentiality of ge-ometries as a fundamental emergence of twoor three basic geometries selected by the user. The geometric shapes will determine the directorder but the user will take the few lines thatemerge from the shape as a radiancy transpir-ing selection that will interact with its neigh-boring segments and connect with opposingsystems. The idea is to explore the geometriesthat emerge from the inner-connective seg-ments as they meet with each other and ex-
