I hate bandwagon’ism, but with recent atrocities in Paris, I couldn’t not say something in this Editor’s Letter. I won’t give credence to the perpetrators of the acts, although we all know who they are, but what they cannot be allowed to create is widespread and longterm panic in our major cities, Leicester included.

They win if we stop doing what we love: shopping, theatre or, generally, just living for fear of attack. Of course, we must always be watchful and vigilant, but we cannot let our lives become smaller and be bullied into submission through terror.

With this in mind, we invite you to enjoy the very best of the season ahead. We’ve got everything to keep your spirits high; from our pick of the arts and theatre world; entertaining in style plus our annual Gift Guide, which has seen us scour the High Streets to bring you a shortlist of the hottest presents that everyone will want in their stockings on the 25th, and so much more...

Our new Paperwork section has also stepped up a gear, as the Christmas break is often a time of reflection and, subsequently, many return to their jobs in January determined to improve their role, or seek a new adventure.

Here at dluxe, we’re no different and the tail-end of the year affords us the luxury of taking stock. 2015. It has been an incredible year. We’ve (finally) put the recession era behind us and have come out fitter and leaner than ever before. Sure, we’ve never worked harder, but we’ve sharpened up our focus and feel the magazine has never looked or read better.

If you haven’t yet taken the time to find us online, or like us on social media, that’s definitely worth adding to your resolution list, as we always have exclusive content on those platforms that you’ll never read in the paper magazine. It’s all part of our plan to bring you what you love, when you want it and in a format that suits you, plus it keeps you one-step ahead of the Joneses. #winwin.

So, without further ado, please let me wish you the very best for the season ahead.

See you in March,

Jonathan FraserGroup Editor In Chief

11 Million reasons A total of 20 classic yet contemporary images supported by Unlimited Impact, will be showcased in the new year as ‘11 Million Reasons’, a life-affirming exhibition that challenges us to consider and celebrate the energy, creativity and diversity of deaf and disabled people who dance.

Sean Goldthorpe, who graduated in Photography and Video at DMU, was commissioned by People Dancing, the Leicester-based UK development organisation and membership body for participatory dance, to photograph disabled dancers re-creating a series of iconic dance scenes from film.

Sean, assisted by final-year DMU Photography student Oscar Henton, shot a series of thought-provoking takes on great cinematic set-pieces, like Gene Kelly singing in the rain, Billy Elliot watched dancing his heart out by his dad and Moira Shearer playing a young ballerina in The Red Shoes (pictured).

“11 Million Reasons is an exhibition I believe will reconfigure many people’s perceptions of the capabilities or expectations of deaf and disabled people who love to dance as part of their enjoyment of everyday life,” said People Dancing’s Producer Louise Wildish.

“Sean has done a brilliant job creating highly artistic, stunningly beautiful images that really capture the magic of how all of us can enjoy and engage with dance.”

Setting all the outside location shots in and around Leicester, Sean, who cites US photographer Gregory Crewdson as a major influence, says he wanted the images to have a cinematic quality. He used a 16x9 format to achieve a wide-screen, set-back feel that would have scope to include a lot of action, yet keep the dancers centre stage.

“I didn’t want to have any crazy angles or effects that might detract from the dancers and their amazing ability to get past the physical challenges they face as disabled artists to achieve such high levels of artistic expression and skill,” said Sean.

“I hope people will look at these images and smile, sense what a great time we all had making them and see disabled dancers – and disabled people more generally – in a new and refreshing light.

“I hope 11 Million Reasons will encourage those who see it not to judge disabled people as being in any way different from themselves.”

Sean admits his carefully composed tableaux, which also include key moments from Dirty Dancing, Flash Dance and Black Swan, weren’t all straightforward to shoot. Structuring big groups of lively, young dancers for the Hairspray and High School Musical compositions proved less than a breeze; getting a wheelchair to the top of Bradgate Park for the Julie Andrews’ ‘Hills are alive’ scene proved a challenge; while the Singing in the Rain shot relied on a local resident coming to the rescue with the loan of a hosepipe.

11 Million Reasons will be shown in the Curve foyer from 1-12 February 2016 as part of the Local Offer Live event. Local Offer is a national service that provides information for young people who are disabled and/or have special educational needs.

In the beauty area, there are shallow on counter washbasins, along with under-counter washbasins which feature an optical glass countertop in a choice of finishes, while a range of furniture and storage options provide elegant and functional solutions.

The wellness bath area features spacious bathtubs, with built-in and under-mount options available to suit all requirements. Each is supplied with taps, a hidden hand held shower and has the option of hydromassage and chromotherapy.

The collection also takes good care of our basic needs, with a wall-hung WC and bidet, designed to fit seamlessly into the modern bathroom, whilst a range of accessories offer a co-ordinated finish.

Plaits will always be a strong look for any season, but for added Christmas sparkle, keep them neat and silky smooth rather than the messy festival braids we’ve seen over the summer. Plaits around the hairline frame the face beautifully and give an added grace to up dos. Either create a halo braid taking the plaits up and over the head, or keep them neat working around the face and pinning at the back of the head.

Short hair doesn’t have to be worn smooth and straight, add some volume for this classic look with a nod to the 60s. Start at the crown of the head and backcomb in sections until you create the desired height. Smooth over with a bristle brush and secure with hairspray for a dramatic, yet elegant look.

Who doesn’t love a Brigitte Bardot inspired look? This easy, undone beehive adds instant glam to any hair type and can be worn in so many ways. For a subtle look, backcomb from the crown for height and keep the front smooth, or to go all out, backcomb from the front of the hair line, spraying as you go to keep the style in place.

This look is all about sophisticated glamour, and works perfectly to go from your desk to the dancefloor! Wear your hair in beautiful waves for the day, then to get party ready, create a deep side parting and pull all your hair to one side and pin into place. Apply some shine serum with a spritz of hairspray and you’re A-list gorgeous in no time at all!

SMART TIMECharity AEDdonate are looking to team up with Schools, Local Communities, Parish Councils and Clubs to raise funds to place Defibrillators (AED’s) within them.

At present in the UK just 8.6% of people who have a Cardiac Arrest outside of hospitals are saved in time, this is because there are simply not enough AED’s out there. Other countries such as Holland 21% and Norway 25% are way ahead of us. As cardiac arrest is the UK’s biggest killer AEDdonate is on a mission to increase the UK survival rate.

The charity arranges events to generate income for the campaign including on-line personal challenges that locals can take part in anything from small runs, parachuting to climbing Mount Kilimanjaro.

Kevin Turner on behalf of the charity said “it is essential that we place as many AED’s as possible out there, with the help of local communities we can do this. The existing fundraising activities means that people can fundraise by spending as they normally do on a daily basis, from buying your groceries from Asda to getting your hair cut, the campaigns get paid a small percentage and it all goes the specific local campaign, we also support each local campaign by providing a pack including posters, collection tubs and ideas a campaign manager and loads of support.”

If you want to take part and can see this as a value to your local School, Community or Club, then please call AEDdonate directly on 01785 472224 or you can email Kevin Turner [email protected]

For the perfect kitchen

&

Sometimes you don’t know why something looks just right, you can’t put your finger on it, it just does. Good design, that’s what it is. Choosing the perfect kitchen is easy; it needs to be classic, simple, really well made and designed to suit your space. Take into account the age and size of your property and try to be sympathetic to this, use it as an advantage and a direction for the design.

It’s amazing how a space that is well designed can really have an effect on how you live and how you feel on a day to day to day basis. We go on holiday to beautiful places and stay in beautiful spaces and we love the way they make us feel, but we often don’t think about our homes in the same way and we really should, because feeling great about the place you spend most of your time in should be top of your very important jobs list.

Design is very important to Floors of Stone and deVOL, both the furniture and flooring itself and the way they work within your home. The best kitchens appear as if common sense has taken over rather than design, a kitchen that just looks right has been well designed.

TRAINING IS MEANT TO BE FUN, RIGHT???

legacy-training.com

The 2 reasons I see most people quitting exercise and healthy lifestyle habits is that they start to dread doing it and they aren’t seeing the results they want from the hard work their putting in!

This is what I focused on when I created the Legacy group sessions, I wanted firstly people to start having a bit more fun with their training and secondly for them to see results and progression. Whether this be less bodyfat, beach body, fitting in that tight dress for the Christmas Party etc…

We have 3 group classes all with a slightly different focus:

TUESDAY NIGHT 7 - 8pm

Harry AA’s ConditioningTeam GB sprinting medalist Harry Aikines gives you the opportunity to learn and train with him and find out how he stays in such incredible shape.

WEDNESDAY NIGHT 7 - 8pm

Female Fat Loss trainingFemale only session where you are taught how best to train with weights in order to achieve fat loss.

SATURDAY MORNING 8 - 9am

Saturday StrongmanNo man really wants to do boring treadmill work! By using modified Strongman exercises like farmers walks, prowlers, sleds, battle ropes, flipping tyres etc.. We can not only build muscle but lose body fat.

Leicester-based Chutney Ivy Restaurant is being tipped for success at the 2015 National Curry Awards, hailed as the ‘Curry Oscars’ by many and taking place at a glittering event in London at the end of November.

The National Curry Awards was started in 2005 by Enam Ali and have since become the quality barometer for Indian cuisine in England, rewarding “a new generation of restauranteurs who, by their investment, hard work and creativity, were already setting new quality standards that even the Michelin Guide inspectors could no longer ignore”.

To be considered for an award is a huge achievement for Chutney Ivy owners Shaf Islam and Simon Postlethwaite. ‘We are delighted to be nominated. We work exceptionally hard to be the best we can be in Leicestershire - and in our

industry. Chutney Ivy is unlike any Indian Restaurant in the city; Chutney Ivy is a high-end, beautifully designed restaurant that happens to excel at Indian cuisine. To win an award would be the icing on the cake in what has been another incredible year – and has seen us, once again, being included in the Michelin Guide 2016”, commented Mr Islam.

The restaurant, which can be found in Leicester’s flourishing Cultural Quarter and opposite Curve Theatre, have announced they are re-introducing its Lunchtime service in December, which sits alongside its popular pre-theatre offering. They are also taking bookings for Christmas parties – both in the restaurant and basement bar.

Chutney Ivy is at 41 Halford Street, Cultural Quarter, Leicester, LE1 1TR. Tel 0116 251 1889.

OUTSIDE LOOKING IN

26 dluxe-magazine.co.uk

“I didn’t make a conscious effort to write a more personal show, but that was what was coming out when I started writing it,” Ed says. “People come to see me for a laugh and I would like to think they go away thinking the show is quite heartwarming. A lot of comics may talk about the same stuff, but what makes it mine is that what I’m saying is what I genuinely think on this subject, and I try to make it as funny as I can. I think we all mine our lives to some degree or other.”

Ed is adamant that he will keep his two young sons out of the celebrity spotlight, so don’t expect an “At Home With Ed Byrne and Family” in OK! any time soon. But in Outside, Looking In, he shows a picture of one of his sons - the denouement of a bittersweet story about buying new shoes – which not only illustrates it perfectly, but produces an “Aaaah” moment.

“I’m aware that they haven’t given me permission to talk about them and that there will come a point when I can’t,” Ed says. “John Bishop, for example, has stopped talking about his [much older] children on stage because people know who they are.

“I talk about them in pretty abstract terms, because what I’m discussing is the act of parenting, and you can’t talk about that without mentioning your own children. And there isn’t anything in this show that would make them at a later date say, ‘I don’t like this’.”

But while there is a lot of personal reflection in his new show, Ed also ponders on matters political - the story about his son sparks a passionate section about how we label young children, for instance, and he also talks about feminism and transgenderism.

I ask Ed if dipping a toe into the transgender debate (for which some have been vilified on social media) isn’t a little risky. “It has become such a big subject because of Caitlyn Jenner [the former athlete Bruce Jenner, who transitioned earlier this year] and some Twitter trolls were refusing to acknowledge her as anything but Bruce. I thought it was interesting that it stills divides people. I call it the thorniest issue since Jesus was fitted for a hat.”

The feminist slant to the new show was sparked by Ed’s reflections on his early days in comedy and, strikingly, he admits to being a little uncomfortable about some of his more laddish material back then.

“My comedy reflected my life at that time – single and enjoying myself – and most of it was fairly harmless ‘the difference between men and women’ kind of thing. But some of the stuff about an ex-girlfriend I can see was a bit angry and I wouldn’t do it now.”

He says he is more aware of how men and women interact in the modern world and is sometimes surprised by the difference in his reactions to things as a man in his forties to when he was twentysomething. “I started watching Californication [the US dark comedy starring David Duchovny as a sex addict] but I found it insulting because I’m expected to empathise with him. His character behaves so unconscionably that I couldn’t watch the second series.

“I don’t how much of that is simply getting older, or that times have changed, or mixing with a broader group of people. Interestingly I find Twitter can expand your horizons; I’ve started following all sorts of people on it and it’s good to get a different take on things.”

I ask Ed, 43, if he still likes touring after two decades. “Apart from the travel involved, which no comic likes, I love it, because you have people responding to something that you have written alone in your office, and the work comes alive in a room of people. I like the television things I do, but nothing can beat a live comedy audience.”

In any spare time he has, Ed is a hill walker; when in Scotland he “bags” Munros (peaks above 3,000ft, he’s at 75) and the completist, slightly geeky side side of him, he admits, means that elsewhere in the British Isles he also collects “county tops” - the highest point in the county. “I’ve downloaded an app for them,” he says with a laugh, “and have started making a list of those I’ve done.”

He’s currently writing a sitcom set in an outdoors shop, and I ask if he plans to introduce his sons to the pleasures of outdoors. “My wife, Claire, and I already have. So far they love it, camping and canoeing, that sort of thing. As they’re growing it’s hard to be apart from them when I’m on tour, and I try not to be away for more than a couple of days at a time, but one of the great things about my job is that it means I can spend a lot of time with them when I’m home.”

Ed Byrne’s Outside Looking In comes to Leicester on Wednesday 17th February as part of Dave’e Leicester Comedy Festival. To book tickets or to find out more about the festival visit www.comedy-festival.co.uk

Tis the season to be sparkling! The festive season is on its way and its the perfect opportunity to dress up to the nines, whether you have a Christmas ball, an event or just want to feel fancy on the big day, there’s no excuse not to find your perfect dress, and Divine Boutique in Silver Arcade has an abundance of beautiful dresses in a huge variety of colours, styles, and sizes! We spoke to the lovely Rosie and Zoe, the owners of Divine, who gave us some top tips about choosing the ideal dress for you this season.

ASSESS YOUR SKINTONE.Not everyone will suit a light or pastel dress so bear that in mind when you’re dreaming of a white Christmas (dress!). Jewel tones are always a winner for a huge variety of skintones, from emerald green to ruby red, so opt for richer colours and you’ll be the belle of the ball.

TAKE YOUR SHAPE INTO ACCOUNT.Again, not all dresses may suit your body shape, and that’s ok. But, instead of shying away from certain styles, you may be able to alter them to fit you- a shorter hemline, a little nip here or there, or even as simple as throwing a lace bolero over a strapless dress!

STRAPS & STICKERS.Speaking of straps…Don’t let straps, or the lack of, ruin your night! Whether that be with a dress that has built in boning, or whether you choose to use a whole lot of body tape, it’s an extra comfort level when you’re dancing around to the countdown.

GO FOR CLASSIC.If you’re just looking to buy for a single occasion then there are so many options for you to choose, but if you want a dress that will last you a few years and a few events, choose a classic design in a neutral tone and steer clear of ‘on-trend’ throw away styles that you might find in some High Street stores. And remember, you always need a LBD stored in your wardrobe for that surprise occasion may sneak up on you.

GIVE IT TIME.Not only will finding the perfect dress take some time, but ensuring it looks good on you will clock up some hours. Give yourself plenty of preparation time and you won’t have to make a last minute dash to the pre-Christmas sales, elbowing shoppers as you go to grab on to that last dress in your size. We order in some dresses for customers which can take several weeks!

GET A NEW YOU THIS NEW YEAR AT RESORTS WORLD BIRMINGHAM’S SANTAI BY EF MEDISPA

As 2016 beckons, we are already thinking about our Resolutions, and what better way to do it than from the outdoor hot tub at SANTAI BY EF MEDISPA at Resorts World Birmingham?! Yes, we know that it’s winter but we couldn’t resist enjoying some RnR from the second floor terrace.

We’ve been lucky enough to visit the new £150 million development several times during the opening season and we must say, it really is something for the Midlands to be proud of and super close to us in Leicestershire!

With 50 outlet stores, 18 stylish bars and restaurants, an 11-screen cinema, four star hotel with impressive five star rooms and suites, conference centre, and a casino, there really is something for everyone at Resorts World Birmingham.

Now that the doors are open, we couldn’t resist the invite to be some of the first guests through the doors of the fantastic new SANTAI BY EF MEDISPA, which has opened on the second floor of Resorts World Birmingham.

Having heard a lot about what the medispa has to offer and having been down to EF MEDISPA’s London clinics, we knew that this would be something special. Opened at the beginning of November, SANTAI BY EF MEDISPA offers traditional spa treatments alongside the latest medical advances in rejuvenation and revitalisation therapies. The team from EF MEDISPA, one of London’s top clinic chains has brought its signature award-winning, cutting-edge, results-focused aesthetics to Birmingham and the surrounding areas. This is, without doubt, a one stop medical spa that

combines aesthetic treatments with the latest medical advances and traditional complementary therapies. As they put it: “It’s Personal. It’s Smart. It’s Intelligent Skincare with Holistic Health.”

So it makes sense that we look to SANTAI BY EF MEDISPA as we embark on our annual ‘New Year, New Me’ ritual. We know that this can be an overwhelming thought so, fear not, we have done the research for you and looked deeper into the top treatments that are on offer ready for your year of revitalisation in 2016. It really can help you from top to toe.

Starting from the top, the expert team offers a range of face treatments. If you need to revitalise your skin and remove the signs of 2015, you could opt for a high performance facial, laser treatment or firming microneedling. If you’re just after a quick makeover, they’ve even got makeup artists on site to get you looking catwalk ready.

When it comes to the body, SANTAI BY EF MEDISPA offers all of the usual treatments you’d find at a spa – male and female waxing, laser hair removal, manicures, pedicures, and body wraps – but their expertise take every treatment to the next level. Living up to its medispa status, the Resorts World Birmingham spa also has a wealth of firming body treatments, slimming treatments, and cellulite treatments that will have you feeling a million dollars.

If you regularly wear a suit to work then you may think the office Christmas party is a time to dress down and wear what you like. This is not a good idea. The office party, to a certain extent, is just like any other office event except it has more profile. This means that your boss is likely to be there, there’s a good chance that your boss’s boss will be there and there may even be some clients there so it’s still a time where presentation and impressions count.

Don’t wear the same suit that you always wear to work. Instead, wear a suit that you wouldn’t normally wear…as long as it’s not a summer suit in a pale pastel colour. Navy, grey or black suits are best and, together with a crisp white shirt, you will cut a fine sartorial figure. You don’t want to blend into the crowd and by wearing a new suit or a suit your colleagues haven’t seen before; you will still make a good impact.

Here are some other quick tips for suiting up for the office Christmas party:

Ties tend to be optional at Christmas parties but if you’re unsure, take one with you. You can always slip it on at the last moment if everybody else is wearing one.

Fight the temptation to wear a Christmas-themed tie or waistcoat. It’s okay to maybe have some tasteful festive cuff-links or tie clip but when it comes to being festive, subtlety is the key.

Accessorizing with a pocket square and a nice watch will give a classic finishing touch to your suit.

A lot of Christmas office parties start shortly after the working day so there’s not a lot of time to get ready. Plan your attire in advance so that you can immediately change and be ready for the event.

Another good reason for men getting suited up for the office Christmas party is showing some respect to your female colleagues. There’s a good chance that they will want to wear something more elegant and sparkly than their normal office attire and if you’re there in your jeans and shirt, they will be made to look and feel a bit awkward. Your female colleagues will prefer it if you’ve made an effort so getting suited up is just plain old-fashioned good manners!

WITH THE FESTIVE SEASON FAST APPROACHING DLUXE LEICESTERSHIRE & RUTLAND’S KRISHMA CHUADHARY LOOKS AT THE HISTORY OF PANTOMIME TO WORK OUT WHAT IT IS ABOUT THIS JUMBLE OF FAIRY TALE, DANCE, JOKES AND SONGS WE FIND SO APPEALING.

As we know it today, Pantomime or Panto is a show primarily targeted at children but it wasn’t always like this. The pantomime was a popular form of entertainment in ancient Greece and later, Rome. Like theatre, it encompassed the genres of comedy, tragedy and sex and originally involved a group of actors, a sung narrative and flute music.

This form of theatre evolved into the Mummers Play, a traditional English folk play performed during the festive gatherings in the middle ages and featuring many of the archetypal elements of the contemporary pantomime such as stage fights, coarse humour and fantastical creatures. These Mummers Plays became influenced by a type of Italian travelling street theatre known as Commedia dell’arte ‘comedy of theatres’ and was first brought to Britain in the 16th century full of masques, harlequins, frenetic chase scenes

and farce. We immediately took it to our hearts and over the centuries Pantomime

has become a staple part of the festive period and is very often a child’s first experience of the theatre.

Over the years a huge number of shows have been performed as Pantomimes

and nearly all of the Pantomimes we visualise today are taken from popular

stories and fairy tales but the tradition. The ever popular Aladdin was the first Panto to be performed on Boxing Day in 1788 and is the second most performed Pantomime today. The most popular, Cinderella was first performed in 1804 but it wasn’t until the start of the 20th Century that Pantomimes were typically staged around the festive period and today’s Christmas tradition began.

KNOW?

INTERIOR INSPRIRATION

K E E P I T H O T I N T H E K I T C H e N i n 2 0 1 6Looking at ways to keep things spicy in the kitchen? Well The Station Ltd might just have the answer. An interior design company based in Ashby De La Zouch, The Station has recently moved their showrooms into a stunning Victorian railway station (hence the name) and are going from strength to strength. Recently exhibiting at Grand Designs in Birmingham and tipped as a ‘Hot Kitchen Supplier To Watch’ by the event itself thanks to the quality work and focused design services we caught up with them to find out their hot trends for kitchens in 2016.

1. OPEN PLAN. For the social butterflies of the world, an open plan kitchen is ideal. It centralizes the kitchen and gives you the space to entertain guests while you’re cooking. From breakfast bars to islands, an open floor plan gives you the flexibility in terms of space and means you won’t miss out on any part of the night.

2. HIGH GLOSS. A super glossy, futuristic lacquer will look striking against a dark or neutral palette. From cherry reds to limes, pure whites to deep berry tones, the sky is your limit when it comes to choice, just make sure to keep on top of the cleaning to avoid messy fingerprints.

3. CONTEMPORARY COUNTRY. Less twee than previous years, the new country kitchen is a modern day feast for any vintage or traditional kitchen lovers. Pair soft pastels like duck egg blue, mints or pale

lemons with darker, richer woods like mahogany or walnut for a contemporary contrast.

4. BRUSHED STEEL. Still very much sought after, metallic kitchens aren’t running out of steam any time soon. To bring this trend up to date, opt for brushed steel as opposed to the shinier versions of late. Offset the shine with a matte or block dark colour to really show off the finish.

5. SUPER STORAGE. Utilising the space in your kitchen is something that many people

struggle with, but next season there will be many appliances and kitchens that are built with space in mind. From drawers opening at the touch, to hidden cupboards, multi use appliances and more, cramming everything into three tiny cupboards is a thing of the past!

If you’re in need of some kitchen inspiration, you can visit their showroom at The Station Ltd, Station Road, Ashby De La Zouch, Leicestershire LE65 2GP. Tel. 01530 412380

O U R F R I E N D S E L E C T R I Cdluxe motorsCAN YOU RUN AN ELECTRIC CAR AS YOUR DAILY DRIVER? WE’RE ALREADY FAMILIAR WITH THE CONCEPT OF HYBRID CARS BUT ADVANCEMENTS IN TECHNOLOGY ALONG WITH AN INCREASE IN ELECTRIC CHARGING STATIONS ACROSS THE UK AND GOVERNMENT SUBSIDIES, MEANS THAT MANY PEOPLE ARE FINDING THE PROSPECT OF A PLUG IN CAR TO BE A PRACTICAL ONE.

WE LOOK AT SOME OF THE BEST ALL ELECTRIC CARS CURRENTLY ON THE UK MARKET.

TESLA MODEL S

Tesla’s Model S is a game changer in electric cars. As big as an Audi A8, the Tesla is as fast as a Porsche and as well-appointed as a Mercedes whilst still being eco-friendly. Drivers can enjoy a staggering 330 mile range between charges for its £63,200 purchase price.

Tesla’s advanced electric powertrain delivers exhilarating performance and unlike a conventional internal combustion engine with hundreds of moving parts, the electric motor has only one moving piece: the rotor. As a result, Model S acceleration is instantaneous, silent and smooth. Step on the accelerator and in as little as 2.8 seconds the Model S is travelling at 60 miles per hour, without hesitation, and without a drop of petrol.

The Tesla is packed full of gadgets, all operated from its 17” touchscreen centre console- it really is like being in the car of the future with door handles which retract into the bodywork when not in use and a full Autopilot driving system which combines a forward looking camera, radar, and 360 degree sonar sensors with real time traffic updates to automatically drive on the open road and in dense, stop start traffic. Changing lanes becomes as simple as a tap of the turn signal. When you arrive at your destination, the Model S will even detect a parking spot and automatically park itself.

RENAULT ZOE

Renault have four all electric models in their arsenal with the Zoe offering the most realistic solution to everyday driving needs thanks to a zero emissions powertrain, well equipped interior, good performance and reasonable price. Users can expect a range of around 100 miles from the electric motor which offers a maximum of 87bhp in normal driving mode and rapid performance- expect to get to 30mph in just 4 seconds.

The little Renault looks like a proper, stylish city car and drives like one too. It also costs little more than an equivalent diesel Clio at £13,445 making it a great second car or school run option.

The car has zero emissions, but if you take into account the carbon dioxide produced by making the electricity in the first place, the ZOE’s CO2 rating is around 54g/km.

BMW i3

A tight turning circle and compact size makes the BMW i3 a whizz in the city. It’s practical too despite its diminutive dimensions there’s lots of room inside thanks no doubt to its

engine and battery placement in the car’s floorplan.

Power comes from a 168bhp electric motor that powers the i3 to 60mph in just 7.2 seconds and the lithium ion batteries offer a range of between 80 and 125

miles although you can double this figure by adding an optional motorbike engine to the powertrain that keeps the batteries topped up.

Despite being electric the BMW i3 follows the BMW tradition for being rear wheel drive and benefits from a firm sporty ride. It’s also very much a premium vehicle with an interior as stylish as its exterior and all for

£30,980.

KIA SOUL EV

For just £2.80 a full charge of the Kia Soul Electric Vehicle can take you up to 132 miles- a fraction of the petrol or diesel cost from the equivalent small SUV. For £24,995 the Kia comes loaded with equipment including touchscreen Satellite

Navigation with European Mapping & Traffic Messaging Channel (TMC) and Charging Point Locator, reversing camera system, aircon, DAB

radio, heated seats and the same, full 7 year warranty that comes with all new Kia’s – reassuring when investing in new technology.

On the road it’s refined, comfortable and nippy making it perfect for city use and it’s five door, raised ride height and decent boot space make it a practical proposition.

NISSAN LEAF

The first mass produced electric car to go on sale in the UK, the Nissan Leaf offers a comfortable ride, lots of equipment and low running costs with an upfront cost that is lower than most- the entry level Visia model is just a little over £15,790 including a £5000 government electric vehicle grant.

To keep costs down, owners lease the Leaf’s batteries at a cost of £70 per month for the duration of their ownership rather than buying them. This means buyers can still enjoy equipment such as sat-nav, a reversing camera, Bluetooth and keyless go within the Leaf’s starting price.

Nissan claims that the Leaf can manage around 124 miles on a single charge making it most suitable for short, city trips rather than blasts up and down the motorway and make a comfortable commuter option.

VW E-UP! & E-GOLF

In spite of the recent revelations around VW’s eco and emission credentials they do offer two all-electric models in their range – the tiny e-up! and the ever popular Golf in e-Golf form.

Neither model is cheap – even with the £5000 government subsidy the e-up! costs a staggering £19,795 and it looks just like a standard Up! with only blue framed VW badges and aero optimised alloy wheels giving the game away; the e-Golf is also subtle in its eco styling and costs £26,325 including the £5000 government grant.

Both cars drive as well as their petrol powered equivalents with the e-up! offering a 93 mile range and the e-Golf a slightly disappointing 80 mile range. A plug in hybrid Golf GTE version is due soon and might offer a better compromise between range, economy and performance.

Being spoilt is something we have gotten used to. From high-end restaurant launches, red carpet celebrity premiers or travelling the world on someone else’s pursestrings - all in the name of journalism - has become second nature to us over the past sixteen years. Don’t think we’re ungrateful; far from it. We recognize that this insight into the life of the gilded generation is a privilege afforded to few and we seize it with relish.

GROSVENOR HOUSE APARTMENTS: A CAPITAL IDEA

Which is exactly what we did when we were invited to take a jaunt to London for the weekend, recently and stay at the Grosvenor House Apartments by Jumeirah Living on Park Lane. Having stayed in numerous high-end hotels over the years, we weren’t - if we’re truthful - expecting a major wow factor. Sure, it had the right address, but how chic could an apartment be? How very wrong we were.

We’d been stung with traffic on a recent weekend visit to the Big Smoke, so we were wise enough to park at Stanmore Station (£2 per 24 hours, fact fans) and jump on the Jubilee Line, which, as luck would have it, takes you directly to Bond Street. It’s less than a ten minute walk from the tube station, or you could Uber it, if you don’t travel lightly. We don’t.

With Park Lane peers including Lamborghini and The Dorchester, Grosvenor House Apartments by Jumeirah Living are unlike any other service we’ve stayed with before. This is a five star, full service apartment offering with its own concierge, bellboy and stunning atrium restaurant. If that’s not enough, it’s in one of the most enviable locations in London and in the ‘thick of it’ in tourism terms.

Before we were shown to our two-bed apartment suite, we were given a tour of two of the four penthouse suites. We fell in love. The kind of love

that only £16,000 per night can bring. Yes, you read that correctly. But what a world to reside in, not least because of the staggering rooftop view of the Capital. They inform me that two of the suites are long-term booked: one by a family and one by a lone businessman, both having lived there for over a half-decade between them. It’s not so much about how the other half, but how the super-super-rich live. It’s no surprise that this is a haven for visiting dignataries, Royalty and rock-stars.

Smitten, we are ushered to our own suite, (pictured above) which boasts more square-footage than my entire house and looks out over the bustle of Park Lane and Hyde Park. This two-bed suite comes with a fully fitted kitchen and enough entertaining space to seat twelve comfortably, should the mood arise. It didn’t but it did strike us that this could be an incredible way to treat yourself, every once in a while, whether for a Big birthday, or just because you can. This two-bedroom apartment suite is a snip at £940 per night, which sounds like a lot of money, but unlike a high-end hotel room, which is essentially just a base, this apartment IS the lcoation of your evening in London. Why would you want to leave? Ever.

Studio suites start from £345 plus VAT, per night. For more information on Grosvenor House Apartments, visit www.jumeirah.com/GHA

BudapestHappy New Year! - Boldog új évet

Take a trip to the Hungarian capital, where locals attempt to cure New Year’s Eve hangovers with pig’s feet, and fireworks and Champagne are plentiful.

At Vörösmarty Square, locals will be ringing in the New Year with a three-day party, and if you’re feeling a little tender on New Year’s Day, be sure to treat yourself to Kocsonya – a local delicacy made from pigs’ feet that is a well-known hangover cure.

Prague Happy New Year! - Šťastný Nový Rok

Take a walk on the wild side and pay a visit to Prague. Like in Budapest, expect plenty of fireworks. Unlike Budapest, watch out for the locals setting

them off themselves whereever and whenever they feel like it. You can tackle New Year’s Eve in two ways – either bar hop around Prague’s amazing array of drinking holes, or find a spot on the bank of the Vltava and soak up the atmosphere.

ParisHappy New Year! - Bonne Année

The hub of the celebrations are at the Champs-Elysees, where the City of Light’s biggest and most spectacular street party starts at 9pm. Alternatively, you

can take in the enchanting Paris skyline from on high, up by Montmartre and Sacre Coeur.

Amsterdam Happy New Year! - Gelukkig Nieuwjaar

If you like to party, you’ll love Amsterdam on New Year’s Eve. A city famed for its nightlife, the Dutch capital certainly lives up to its reputation when it comes

to welcoming in the New Year. Celebrations begin

on 29 December and the whole city comes alive with light and sound, with fireworks, live music, and plenty of beer.

BerlinHappy New Year! - Prosit Neujahr

Like Amsterdam, Berlin is a well renowned partying destination that lives up to the hype come New Year’s Eve. Head over to the Brandenburg Gate where you’ll

find nearly two miles worth of frivolities to fill your boots with.

Don’t miss Silvesterlauf - a 6.3km pancake race up and down Teufelsberg (Devil’s Hill) held I the afternoon on New Year’s Eve. Those with a Stein in hand may prefer to spectate.

Copenhagen Happy New Year! - Godt nytår

In Copenhagen the New Year’s Eve celebrations begin with gathering for the chiming of the Town

Hall bells at midnight. when the celebrations get off to a smashing start. The big New Year’s Eve tradition in Denmark involves breaking plates on your friends’ doors. It’s apparently

good luck, so, in theory, the more plates smashed on your front door, the more you’re loved.

Barcelona Happy New Year! - Feliz Año Nuevo

At the stroke of midnight in the world’s most famous Catalan city, a customary tradition is to

shove 12 grapes (yep, you heard right) into your mouth on - one for each stroke of the clock. They call it Nochevieja, which is a bit of a mouthful in itself.

Locals then head to the beach for stunningly over-sized pyrotechnic displays rather than your average firework shows. And, because you can never have

too many grapes at New Year, they then tend to quaff bottles of Catalonian sparkling wine, Cava. Don’t even think about asking for Champagne. Lisbon Happy New Year! - Feliz Ano Novo

The Portuguese love their traditions and none is more loved than the New Year’s Eve tradition of

wearing blue underwear while you initiate the midnight ritual of raisin eating. Each raisin represents a calendar month – eat them all and make sure you

keep some cash in your back pocket all night and good luck in wealth for the New Year is guaranteed.

Brussels Happy New Year! - Beste wensen

If you’re in the Belgian capital on New Year’s Eve expect lots of kisses. They say the best things come in threes and Belgian New Year kisses are no different.

Tradition dictates giving every person you greet three kisses each at midnight. Rome Happy New Year! - Buon anno

The Romans love a good New Year’s Eve knees up. They like is noisy too – it’s tradition to throw old pots, pans and furniture out of the window to symbolise

letting go of unhappiness and preparing Rome for a happier future. Italians also eat lentils and wear red underwear for good luck with their finances - anything goes as long as it is red.

BOOZY SAUSAGE, FENLAND CELERY AND APPLE HOTPOT WITH CIDEROne pot comfort food at its best. This delicious casserole uses a trio of the best of British regional produce; Newmarket sausages, Fenland Celery and Bramley apples. A good slosh of cider along with fresh sage bring this fantastic winter warmer together.

Close the curtains, turn up the heating and settle down to a plate of cosy comfort food- it’s Winter after all!

Serves: 4Preparation time: 10 minutes Cooking time: 1hr 15 minutes

YOU’LL NEED: 450g Newmarket sausages (8 sausages)1 tbsp rapeseed oil6 shallots, peeled and diced6 sticks Fenland celery, cut into 10cm lengths2 Bramley apples, peeled and cut into wedges200g tinned tomatoes, chopped300mls dry cider1 tbsp chopped fresh sage leavesSalt and pepper to taste

WHAT TO DO:Pre-heat oven to 180C/350F/Gas 5. In a large cast iron or ovenproof casserole dish, fry the sausages in the oil until they are browned all over. Take them out and set to one side, then add the diced shallots and fry until they have just started to soften.

Add the Fenland celery and fry for a further 5 minutes until the celery has started to soften. Put the sausages back into the casserole dish, along with apples, tinned tomatoes, cider and sage leaves, and season to taste with salt and pepper.

Cover and place the casserole dish into a pre-heated oven and cook for 1 hour.

Serve with steamed, seasonal greens and mashed potatoes or as a one pot meal with crusty bread.

Cook’s tip: Fenland celery is a heritage variety of celery grown in the Cambridgeshire Fens. In 2013, Fenland celery was awarded Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) status and joined the ranks of Parma ham, Champagne and Melton Mowbray Pork Pies. Fenland celery is only grown in small pockets of Cambridgeshire, Suffolk and Norfolk using traditional farming methods. The deep, peaty soils in the Fens work towards giving Fenland celery its nutty-sweet flavour and paler colour. Fenland celery is available from October to December and can be found in Waitrose, Marks & Spencer, Tesco and Ocado.

34 Windsor St Restaurant & Cocktail Bar in Burbage have been included in the prestigious Michelin Guide 2016 as a recommended restaurant, making them one of just a few restaurants in Leicestershire in 2016 to join the catering hall of fame - and one of just a handful of eateries in the East Midlands to ever receive the accolade.

34 Windsor St is owner Zeffy Thompson’s creation of an array of ideas born from her own personal taste and experiences from around the world. Setting up in Burbage in 2013, Zeffy’s aim was to ‘create a restaurant and cocktail bar that injected a touch of glamour into the culinary experience.’ she commented in her recent hour long interview on BBC Radio Leicester.

Michelin is the only international system for testing and grading haute cuisine and its team of 70 European inspectors, who visit restaurants anonymously have unrivalled experience of dining out. Chefs and restauranteurs consider the guide the most important for building a reputation and attracting customers. The restaurants are reviewed regularly to ensure that Michelin standards are kept up to date, and to see whether they’re eligible to move to the next stage- a Michelin star!

On being recommended by Michelin, Zeffy said; ‘We’re so thrilled and proud here at 34 Windsor St to be included in the Michelin Guide 2016. Over this last year our new Head Chef Arran Shaw and his brigade has worked really hard developing and establishing our menus. We’re constantly striving to be the best we can be and provide our guests with a memorable dining experience, our priority is to maintain our customer expectations and continue to push our culinary boundaries.’

Their ethos is simple: ‘British food, done well’ concentrating on flavours and quality of produce using both locally sourced producers and innovative cooking techniques. The carefully selected wine menu complements the dishes and is forever evolving.

Over the Christmas period, they have lots of fun festive events, including a seasonal afternoon tea, a day for children (and the young at heart) with their Miracle At 34 Street which includes a Christmas film and goodies as well as a Christmas cocktail party after the big day!

When I announced I was going to the football recently, via Facebook, there was an uproar. Some reacted with increduility, some with mirth, others needed a sit down and a sweet tea. You see, I’m hardly of the football persuasion. A weedy child with a fear of getting muddy meant I was always in the relegation zone and last to be picked for the team at school. That was fine by me, as my sense of worth was healthily intact, but a severe disappointment to my football-loving father. Such is my stature as a non-sporty soul, my mother relishes the story where I was caught having a Mars bar and packet of crisps on the playing field, mid-game writes dluxe LEICESTERSHIRE & RUTLAND’S Kevin Urquhart.

As a (mature) adult, twenty-five years since leaving school, the persuasion of the pitch has remained elusive, so the invitation, albeit a kind one, was a queer one for me to get my head around. I needed a partner in crime, but couldn’t bear to go with a dyed-in-the-wool football lover, so opted for my very good friend, Laura.

Matchday approaches and it transpires that ‘we’ are playing Watford. The opposing team mean nothing to me, if I’m honest but what I do glean is that now that they’re in the Premier League, this - and all the rest of the fixtures - are big deals attracting sell out crowds of 32-odd thousand.

We’re to be in the Legends Lounge, which is just one of their newly refurbished hospitality suites. The medium sized room overlooks the river with walls adorned with memorabilia from famous ex-players such as Gary Lineker (apparently he played football before he ate crisps) and Gordon Banks (anyone?). Apparently, since their ascension into the top flight of football, facilities have been upgraded significantly, so they can hold their heads high amongst the likes of Man U et al. Get me with the abbreviations. The idea is that there is, of course, the entry level season tickets where you are in the thick of things in the fan enclosure, armed with a pie and pint, but there is every option upwards depending on the depth of your pockets or your reason for attending (special occasion, entertaining clients etc.) The Legends Lounge was described to me, to keep the football analogy going, as a midfield player that gets to participate in all the best bits of the game.

We arrive for a 12.45 start. It’s an early start considering the match doesn’t kick off until 3pm, but this means you get better parking, miss the crowds, plus get the chance to wine/dine at leisure before the match. The food is good - it’s not Michelin, but can hold its own with choices such as Salt Beef & Cranberry Ballotine with crunchy piccalilli for starter, followed by Pan roasted cod loin, pak choi & brocolli with a chilli, lime and basil broth. We’ve already established I have a sweet tooth, so opted for the Apple & maple syrup bread & butter pudding with creme anglaise. My thinking was that it’d fortify me against the chill outside. It would be remiss of me not to mention the waiting staff: they were accomplished and offered a white-glove service that

would put many ‘proper’ restaurants in the city to shame. What’s also apparent is that there is a wide mix of folk enjoying the Legends Lounge hospitality: I’d expected it to be a thoroughly testosterone-fuelled event, but there was a lovely mix of corporate guests, special occasion visitors like ourselves and true-Blue fans wanting the upgraded experience. A close-hand table magician elevates the atmosphere further.

As it was Memorial weekend, there was a special Helicopter visit delivering the Memorial Match Day Ball. This isn’t standard practice, but did provide a bit of theatre, so much so that I was chatting long after it had departed and missed the official kick off. Oops.

The first half is a slow one. Even I, as an unseasoned eye, can tell that LCFC are wasting opportunities. Their play is sloppy whereas Watford are all over them.

We all hope they’ll pull up their proverbial socks and get on with it. Laura, who’s other half devotes most weekends to the game, tells me this is typical Leicester: they like to come from behind, so to speak.

We break for half-time and more food. This time, it’s cheese and biscuits and more champagne. Truly, I begin to wonder why I am only just discovering football now, in my forties?

As the sky darkens to the colour of a bruise, the second half begins and it’s much more exciting. Vardy scores and this puts him in the record books, or something. It’s over my head, but I’m enjoying it. Loving it in fact. It has something of the feel of the Olympics about it: the friendliness, the scale, the excitement. I begin to understand that the problem with me and school was that I was made to be a voyeur. There are those that play and those that sit on the sidelines, with or without Mars bars.

The final whistle is blown by the referee and everyone rises to their feet to applaud the players off the pitch. It’s back into the Legends Lounge one last time where there is more food waiting for us before the room host (an ex-player - hence the Legends bit) announces the winners of the various quizzes and competitions that have been running through the course of the afternoon. And just when I thought that was the end of the thoroughly enjoyable day, the PA announcer (Mr Leicester himself, Alan ‘The Birch’ Birchenall, I am reliably informed) arrives with one of the players, fresh from the field, who’s been voted as ‘man-of-the-match’ for a presentation and quick-fire question and answer session. To be up close and personal with one of your football heroes is, quite evidently, a bucket-list moment for some.

The result? I couldn’t tell you for sure, but what I do know is that I had a brilliant afternoon. It was completely out of my comfort zone, but one that I will definitely do again. For anyone who has not been to watch LCFC at the King Power Stadium, nor tried out the hospitality options, I would wholeheartedly recommend you do so very soon, not least because City are riding high at the top of the league.

Adapted by Pulitzer Prize finalist and Tony and Olivier Award-winning playwright Richard Greenberg and directed by Nikolai Foster, this tale of vivacious, good-time girl Holly Golightly and her fantastical existence in 1940s New York City, is told through the eyes of a young writer, completely fascinated by this exquisite extrovert who every woman wants to be, and every man wants to be with.

Jellyrolls, the Leicester based independent designer childrenswear and ladieswear retailer partnered up with the likes of other local independents Pilot, Wellgosh and Divine Boutique in a fashion show at the beginning of November that catered for all ages. Showcasing their latest AW15 collections, available to buy now, the stores decided to join forces in the run up to Christmas to remind people why shopping independent is best in Leicester.

“There are so many wonderful shops out there that are being overlooked and ignored in favour of bigger chain stores in the shopping centres in the City’ says Hayley Girardier, Managing Director of Jellyrolls. (pictured right) “We wanted to put on a show that would really impress people and make them stop and think where they’re going to head to over the Christmas period, and to actively choose to visit independent retailers, and events showcasing these retailers like the Stoneygate Christmas market. We partnered up with some fantastic retailers from the High Street, Loseby Lane and the Silver Arcade, and we wanted to show everyone that the best things really do come in small packages!”

Held at the stunning City Rooms on Thursday 12th November from 6pm-9pm, the night included several childrenswear shows, with around 30 local Leicester children all strutting their stuff down the runway, with all clothing from Jellyrolls’ store on the High Street. Brands shown included Lil Devius, Juicy Couture, Bossy and more. There was also three runs of menswear catwalks from Pilot and Wellgosh, as well as womenswear from Jellyrolls, Pilot and eveningwear specialists Divine Boutique.

Hair was prepped by stylists from Jordans salon in Leicester, and Sue Hawley salon in Derby, with makeup by students at Leicester College. In between shows, local Leicestershire singer Lizzy Rushby took to the floor to perform some beautiful covers of classic 30s, 40s, 50s songs, which were very fitting considering the backdrop of the Grade 1 listed City Rooms and attendees were able to peruse tables and rails of accessories from the brands involved. There was also a raffle on the night, with prizes from local restaurants, theatres, clothing and accessory brands, health spas and much more.

The proceeds went to Hope Against Cancer, a local charity that helps fund research into cures and healthcare regarding multiple cancers. Nigel Rose, the Chief Executive of the charity was in attendance on the night and even made a speech about how important it is, and how grateful they are of events such as the Fashion Show which allows them to carry on with their important work.

paperworkDLUXE PLEASURE MEETS BUSINESS IN THE SECOND CITY

I binge-watch. I admit it, writes Dluxe Business Editor Bart Dalton, and when I heard on the radio this week that Collins had identified this term as the 2015 word of the year, I knew instantly that I had contributed to this development. I have recently wasted many, many hours of my life watching Walking Dead. In the beginning I thought it was going to be a horror or scare film but, as the series has gone on, I started to see a lot more similarities to real life, especially

the correlation with the year we’ve just experienced, what with the huge amount of ups and downs and even larger amount of waiting for things to happen. Whether it has been Greece leaving the Euro zone, the Bank of England raising rates or which box set I should focus on next, it has been a fun but challenging year.

But what does my crazy obsession with zombies have to do with dealing with wealth? Follow along with me here. Like most wealthy families, even those caught up in a zombie apocalypse, everything starts out in a fervour filled with running, fighting and trying to survive. As the family grows more accustomed to their wealth, and in the series less worried about being chased down by the living dead and more worried about how they’re going to stay alive, they become comfortable with their surroundings and they do three things:

Number one is when they sit down and take inventory. I like to call this the wealth map, a snapshot of all the assets, family members and other interests that the family share and how they all interact. Things like this need to be in writing and can take time for everybody to compile. If you are a wealthy family this might be businesses, portfolios, properties, car collections, art and so on. If you are a family fighting the zombie apocalypse this might be a place to sleep, weapons, food supply and probably people to avoid.

The second thing is to create a family doctrine or family rules that gets rid of the assumption that everybody understands exactly how you are supposed to act and solidifies it by writing it down in sharing it. The best way to make sure

that the family understands and buys in to this is to host a family summit where the wealth map can be presented and the family rules or the family doctrine can be presented and agreed to. Some of the rules could be as simple as be a contributing member in society, not tarnish the family name, be responsible with the family’s assets in participating family functions, including but not limited to the family summits which should happen at least once every two years. On the other side if your family is fighting a zombie apocalypse then your family doctrine might include do not eat somebody else’s canned food, don’t stab a family member -unless it turned into a zombie of course and if society ever gathers itself up again, don’t be a bad person.

The last thing, that works more in current times then in the zombie apocalypse, is creating a family investment company. This is a tool used to make sure that families of wealth carry on in perpetuity. Family investment companies normally pull the assets and liabilities of families to create a great succession plan. Previously things like family offices and ultrahigh net worth private banking seemed unreachable by many individuals. This is now not truly the case and with the right guidance there are many tax, income and succession benefits that can arise if done properly. It’s at this stage that our zombie survivors should be planting up a vegetable garden and guarding the family goat.

Although this article is a bit tongue-in-cheek, with references to the zombie apocalypse and how that relates to wealthy families, the truth of the matter is without the right motivation or stimulus many families maintain what they have or decline to the generations, but if you don’t have the motivation of being chased and surviving day-to-day and you want to make sure that everything you worked hard for and built isn’t just for you, but for your family for generations to come, there are just some things you need to set aside time for. Figure out where you are now by creating a wealth map. Get written rules in place on family behaviour and I emphasise the fact that they need to be written. Lastly, if your wealth is significant enough then consider creating a family investment company; it may be an answer to make sure your wealth has longevity.

Make the next year a good one by implementing one of the above and make it an amazing one by implementing all three. Most of all don’t let your family wealth meander aimlessly like the living dead.

With the new flat-rate state pension due to come into force next year, research has shown that fewer than half of people retiring in 2016 will pick up the full new state pension, meaning the majority will lose out in the long run. One of Leicestershire’s leading firms of financial advisors, Newby Castleman (Financial Services) Limited, is urging people concerned about their financial position, to contact them to ensure they are fully prepared for the change.

As of 6th April 2016, retirees have been promised a flat-rate pension of £155 a week, which will replace the current basic state rate of £115.95 a week, providing they have paid at least 35 years of National Insurance contributions.

Whilst on paper the new state pension is much higher than the current basic state pension, the imminent change by the Government is set to cause concern for many approaching retirement, as figures show that fewer than half of those reaching State Pension Age (SPA) shortly after 2016, will pick up the full new state pension.

Worse still, those likely to lose out under the new system are believed to be lower earners who ‘contracted out’ for short periods at some point in their careers and will expect to see their pensions cut by £2,000 a year. Those likely to benefit from the changes are thought to be the long term self-employed or those who are not in employment.

Under the existing system, most employees would retire with a basic state pension of £115 a week, plus a second state pension (S2P) which would have topped up their basic pension by between £4,500 and £9,000 a year. However, due to the changes taking effect in 2016, the new flat-rate state pension will merge with the basic pension and S2P, meaning millions of workers reaching retirement will be out of pocket.

There are also concerns that there is an expectation that everyone who reaches state pension age from 6th April 2016, will move from a basic state pension of £115 to a new flat rate of £155 per week.

John Freeman, Consultant at Newby Castleman (Financial Services) Limited, said: “It is estimated that just one in three retirees are set to receive the new flat-rate pension when it comes into effect. “The new transition will bring confusion and is likely to raise concerns and questions from those approaching retirement. There’s also the worry that many people are likely to get less than they may have expected, ultimately leading to disappointment. We are therefore recommending that those approaching retirement next year contact us to get the appropriate support and information to ensure they fully understand the change coming into effect and how it’ll effect their financial situation.”

Anyone requiring independent financial advice can contact John Freeman, Financial Advisor at Newby Castleman (Financial Services) Limited on 0116 254 9262 or email [email protected].

E m p l o y e e s working in leisure, culture and sport roles take more sick days than any other industry, a new study

reveals. Nationally those employed in this field scored highest taking 3.8 days per annum off sick on average with workers in telecoms, marketing and education also featuring high in the sickliest professions.

Those working in manufacturing or industrial labour take the fewest days off sick a year (1.59). In comparison the average employee in the East Midlands takes just over two sick days per year.

More than half (53 per cent) of East Midlanders dread having to make the call to their boss to tell them they are sick- with flu, stomach bugs and viruses the leading causes of missing work. Similarly, a quarter admitted they put on a ‘sick voice’ if ringing in to get a day off work and more than 46 per cent of the region’s workers have needed a sick day but been too afraid or unable to take one because of work pressures.

One of the nation’s most popular musicals, Oliver! is sure to entertain at Leicester’s Curve this Christmas. Based on Charles Dicken’s classic novel, Oliver! tells the tale of the orphan, apprenticed to an undertaker, who runs away and is taken in by a gang of urchins before finding happiness at Mr Brownlow’s Bloomsbury home. Along the way Oliver and the audience meet iconic characters such as the blusterous Mr Bumble, the conniving Fagin, caring Nancy, fearsome Bill Sykes and of course the mischievous Artful Dodger and are treated to songs including Food, Glorious Food, Consider Yourself, You’ve Got to Pick a Pocket or Two, It’s a Fine Life and I’d Do Anything.

We caught up with actress Cat Simmons, who plays Nancy in the production to find out more about the show and why she just can’t wait to perform Oom Pah Pah!

Oliver! is one of the UK’s most popular musicals, how does it feel to be a part of it? It’s wonderful! Oliver! has been close to my heart for many, many years. I’ve always loved the music and the story. In fact when I was ten years old I wrote out a list of parts I wanted to play as an actress and Nancy was on that list so it really is a dream come true.

What is it about the part of Nancy that attracted you at such a young age?I think it was because I loved the songs she sung, especially ‘Oom-Pah-Pah’ I remember seeing it on the film and loving it. I’d never actually seen the show on stage until I was in it so I was relieved that it’s as fun on the stage to do as it looked like on screen! Nancy always seemed like a fun and vibrant character to me, even after the life she’s led and being betrayed by her husband. She’s such a warm and loving character which is shown in the love and concern that she has for Oliver who is essentially a stranger to her. Oh and I think I loved her red dress! It wasn’t until I got older that I started to think about her story and what a dark place she was actually coming from.

Yes, because she’s actually quite a troubled character isn’t she? She’s been through a lot and she’s a young woman. Probably, since a child,

she’s had to work on the streets and as a thief. Now she’s in an abusive relationship with Bill, who not only is the biggest criminal in town but is working with Fagin, one of London’s key criminal masterminds so it’s an edgy and dangerous life. In spite of this she’s desperately devoted to her man; she’ll never leave him.

Even though it’ set in Victorian London do you think the show has a lot to say about today’s society? Yes although we live in a more sophisticated society today we sadly still have to deal with things like child poverty and the massive divide between the rich and the poor. No matter what the time period you have people in society living on the boundaries. Dickens really knew how to write about these people. I think his story was actually written as a serial in Victorian newspapers; a bit like a soap opera documenting the world as it was at the time. Obviously times have changed but there are definite parallels between Dickens’ world and ours. What I like so much about Oliver! is that despite all of this, the message of love and hope feeds through it all and Nancy is key to that.

Yes, despite everything that Nancy goes through, she does stays a positive person, she’s always thinking of herself and those around her. What do you think gets her through? I suppose when you grow up a certain way you know nothing else. Nancy creates her own joy and the joy of those around her. She’s the heart of the party isn’t she, always the centre of attention and she’s aware that she has this wonderful effect on people and maybe that’s what takes her though life; gives her purpose.

So which part of the show are you most excited about? Oh it’s got to be ‘Oom-Pah-Pah’, I love it! Oom-Pah-Pah’ is the moment that you’re all on stage, pretty much the full company, and you’re all having fun. It’s great fun to come together as a company and for everyone to sing, I can’t wait to start performing it!

That’s the thing about Oliver!, the songs are so good aren’t they? I know I was out with one of my friends in the pub and we decided to perform an entire rendition of ‘Oom-Pah-Pah’ and then we got on to ‘Pick A Pocket Or Two’, before moving on to the famous one liners from the show - I think my favourite quote from the show is “Oi Fagin, these sausages are mouldy” and he replies “Shut up and drink your gin!” It’s those fantastic one liners and wonderful songs that everybody knows, they’re almost part of our DNA now. So is this your first visit to Leicester and to Curve? It’s my first visit to Curve and my second visit to Leicester. I was at the Haymarket Theatre many moons ago but I have a vague memory of the city although I imagine it’s changed a huge amount since then! It does feel like I’m visiting a new city and I look forward to it. I’ve got friends in Leicester so I’m looking forward to catching up with them too and I’m sure they’ll show me around.

And finally, can you tell us any secrets about the show? Well it’s all a big secret as this is an all new production, new set, new designs, staging, costumes so that’s your secret, but it’s one I’m keeping. You’ll have to see the show!

OLIVER! A Curve Production directed by Paul Kerryson runs from the 27th November until 23rd January. Tickets are priced from just £18.50 and available from www.curveonline.co.uk
