Before you Begin

InstallationThs secton w wak you through the nstaaton process. Pacement of the router s very mportant. Do not pace therouter n an encosed area such as a coset, cabnet, or n the attc or garage.

Pease conigure the router wth the computer that was ast connected drecty to your modem. Aso, you can ony usethe Ethernet port on your modem. If you were usng the USB connecton before usng the router, then you must turn offyour modem, dsconnect the USB cabe and connect an Ethernet cabe to the Internet port on the router, and then turnthe modem back on. In some cases, you may need to ca your ISP to change connecton types (USB to Ethernet).

If you have DSL and are connectng va PPPoE, make sure you dsabe or unnsta any PPPoE software such asWnPoet, Broadjump, or Enternet 300 from your computer or you w not be abe to connect to the Internet.

Section 2 - Installation

Wireless Installation ConsiderationsThe D-Lnk wreess router ets you access your network usng a wreess connecton from vrtuay anywhere wthnthe operatng range of your wreess network. Keep n mnd, however, that the number, thckness and ocaton of was,

cengs, or other objects that the wreess sgnas must pass through, may mt the range. Typca ranges vary dependngon the types of materas and background RF (rado frequency) nose n your home or busness. The key to maxmzngwreess range s to foow these basc gudenes:

1. Keep the number of was and cengs between the D-Lnk router and other network devces to a mnmum

- each wa or ceng can reduce your adapter’s range from 3-90 feet (1-30 meters.) Poston your devces

so that the number of was or cengs s mnmzed.

2. Be aware of the drect ne between network devces. A wa that s 1.5 feet thck (.5 meters), at a

45-degree ange appears to be amost 3 feet (1 meter) thck. At a 2-degree ange t ooks over 42 feet(14 meters) thck! Poston devces so that the sgna w trave straght through a wa or ceng (nstead

of at an ange) for better recepton.

3. Budng Materas make a dfference. A sod meta door or aumnum studs may have a negatve effect on

range. Try to poston access ponts, wreess routers, and computers so that the sgna passes through

drywa or open doorways. Materas and objects such as gass, stee, meta, was wth nsuaton, water

(ish tanks), mrrors, ie cabnets, brck, and concrete w degrade your wreess sgna.

4. Keep your product away (at east 3-6 feet or 1-2 meters) from eectrca devces or appances thatgenerate RF nose.

5. If you are usng 2.4GHz cordess phones or X-10 (wreess products such as ceng fans, ghts, and

home securty systems), your wreess connecton may degrade dramatcay or drop competey. Make

sure your 2.4GHz phone base s as far away from your wreess devces as possbe. The base transmtsa sgna even f the phone n not n use.

Wireless SecurityThs secton w show you the dfferent eves of securty you can use to protect your data from ntruders. TheDIR-615 offers the foowng types of securty:

• WPA2 (W-F Protected Access 2) • WPA2-PSK (Pre-Shared Key)• WPA (W-F Protected Access) • WPA-PSK (Pre-Shared Key)

• WEP (Wred Equvaent Prvacy)

What is WEP?

WEP stands for Wred Equvaent Prvacy. It s based on the IEEE 802.11 standard and uses the RC4 encryptonagorthm. WEP provdes securty by encryptng data over your wreess network so that t s protected as t s transmttedfrom one wreess devce to another.

To gan access to a WEP network, you must know the key. The key s a strng of characters that you create. When usngWEP, you must determne the eve of encrypton. The type of encrypton determnes the key ength. 128-bt encryptonrequres a onger key than 64-bt encrypton. Keys are deined by enterng n a strng n HEX (hexadecma - usngcharacters 0-9, A-F) or ASCII (Amercan Standard Code for Informaton Interchange – aphanumerc characters) format.

ASCII format s provded so you can enter a strng that s easer to remember. The ASCII strng s converted to HEXfor use over the network. Four keys can be deined so that you can change keys easy.

What is WPA?

WPA, or W-F Protected Access, s a W-F standard that was desgned to mprove the securty features of WEP (WredEquvaent Prvacy).

The 2 major mprovements over WEP:

• Improved data encrypton through the Tempora Key Integrty Protoco (TKIP). TKIP scrambes the keys

usng a hashng agorthm and, by addng an ntegrty-checkng feature, ensures that the keys haven’t

been tampered wth. WPA2 s based on 802.11 and uses Advanced Encrypton Standard (AES) nsteadof TKIP.

• User authentcaton, whch s generay mssng n WEP, through the extensbe authentcaton protoco

(EAP). WEP reguates access to a wreess network based on a computer’s hardware-specic MACaddress, whch s reatvey smpe to be snffed out and stoen. EAP s but on a more secure pubc-keyencrypton system to ensure that ony authorzed network users can access the network.

WPA-PSK/WPA2-PSK uses a passphrase or key to authentcate your wreess connecton. The key s an apha-numercpassword between 8 and 63 characters ong. The password can ncude symbos (!?*&_) and spaces. Ths key mustbe the exact same key entered on your wreess router or access pont.

WPA/WPA2 ncorporates user authentcaton through the Extensbe Authentcaton Protoco (EAP). EAP s but on amore secure pubc key encrypton system to ensure that ony authorzed network users can access the network.

What s Wreless?

Wreess or W-F technoogy s another way of connectng your computer to the network wthout usng wres. W-Fuses rado frequency to connect wreessy, so you have the freedom to connect computers anywhere n your home orofice network.

Why D-Lnk Wreless?

D-Lnk s the wordwde eader and award wnnng desgner, deveoper, and manufacturer of networkng products.D-Lnk devers the performance you need at a prce you can afford. D-Lnk has a the products you need to bud yournetwork.

How does wreless work?

Wreess works smar to how cordess phone work, through rado sgnas to transmt data from one pont A to pontB. But wreess technoogy has restrctons as to how you can access the network. You must be wthn the wreessnetwork range area to be abe to connect your computer. There are two dfferent types of wreess networks WreessLoca Area Network (WLAN), and Wreess Persona Area Network (WPAN).

Wreless Local Area Network (WLAN)

In a wreess oca area network, a devce caed an Access Pont (AP) connects computers to the network. The access

pont has a sma antenna attached to t, whch aows t to transmt data back and forth over rado sgnas. Wth anndoor access pont as seen n the pcture, the sgna can trave up to 300 feet. Wth an outdoor access pont the sgnacan reach out up to 30 mes to serve paces ke manufacturng pants, ndustra ocatons, coege and hgh schoocampuses, arports, gof courses, and many other outdoor venues.

Wreess technoogy s expandng everywhere not just at home or ofice. Peope ke the freedom of mobty and t’sbecomng so popuar that more and more pubc factes now provde wreess access to attract peope. The wreessconnecton n pubc paces s usuay caed “hotspots”.

Usng a D-Lnk Cardbus Adapter wth your aptop, you can access the hotspot to connect to Internet from remoteocatons ke: Arports, Hotes, Coffee Shops, Lbrares, Restaurants, and Conventon Centers.

Wreess network s easy to setup, but f you’re nstang t for the irst tme t coud be qute a task not knowng where tostart. That’s why we’ve put together a few setup steps and tps to hep you through the process of settng up a wreessnetwork.

Tps

Here are a few thngs to keep n mnd, when you nsta a wreess network.

Centralze your router or Access Pont Make sure you pace the router/access pont n a centrazed ocaton wthn your network for the best performance. Tryto pace the router/access pont as hgh as possbe n the room, so the sgna gets dspersed throughout your home.

If you have a two-story home, you may need a repeater to boost the sgna to extend the range.

Elmnate Interference

Pace home appances such as cordess teephones, mcrowaves, and teevsons as far away as possbe from therouter/access pont. Ths woud sgnicanty reduce any nterference that the appances mght cause snce they operateon same frequency.
