    forfreeorverycheapfromlocalwarehousesorhardwarestores.

    Palletsalsoprovidearusticlooktoyourproject,sinceeveryboardhascharacterandis

    unique.Beforeweshare3ofourfavoriteDIYpalletprojectsyoucandothisweekend,here

  • aresomestepsfordisassemblingyourpallets(whichcanbereallydifficultifyoutrytopry

    them.)

    Take apart your pallet by cutting it. ThisismypreferredmethodbecauseitisfasterthananyothermethodIhaveattempted.

    MostofmypalletprojectsarenotsofancythatIcareaboutnailsinthewoodormaintainingthe

    originallengthoftheboards.YoucouldsaythatIhavelowstandardsforaccuracy

    Mylowstandardsaffordmetheluxuryofspendingabout5minutesdismantlingeach

    palletandwithoutmucheffort.

    Hereishowitsdone.

    1.CUTEXCESSWOODFROMSIDES

    Ifinditeasiertocutthewoodawaythatishangingoverthesideofthepallet,butitisnt

    necessary.Dependingontheproject,youmayneedtheboardsattheirfulllength.

    Likewise,youmaywanttheboardssmaller.Inthiscase,cutalongtherunnersandremovethe

    smallpiecesofwoodstillattachedbythenailsafterwards.

  • 2.CUTNAILSWITHSAWZAW

    Makesureyouhaveametalbladeattachedtothesawzaw,andonelongenoughtocutboth

    nailsatthesametime.

    Sometimesitcanbedifficulttogetthebladebetweentheboards,butifyoupressthetrigger

    slightly,thereciprocatingbladewillslowlyworkitswaytothenails.

  • 3.REMOVENAILSFROMCUTBOARDS

    Useapunchtohitthenailthroughtheboard.

    1.MEASURETHEWALL

  • Thiswillgiveyouanideaabouthowmanyplanksyoullneed,whichalsoletsyoudecidehow

    manypalletsitwilltake.Itshardtoestimatesinceeverypalletisdifferent,andhasadifferent

    amountofplanksonit.

    Therearetonsofthingsyoucandowithpallets,soitneverhurtstogettoomany!

    Ifithelps,dividingthelength+widthofyoursurfaceanddividingby144willgiveyouthetotal

    amountofsquarefeetyoullneed.Ittakesabout7or8palletboardstoget10squarefeet.

  • 2.PREPARESURFACE

    Cleanthewallwithsomesoapandwater,andmakesuretopulloutanynailsoritemsthatmay

    causeanissuewhenyouhangtheboards.

  • 3.DETERMINEAPATTERN

    Weregoingtodoastaggeredhorizontaldesign,butifyouaregoingtoalignyourboards

    differently,nowisthetimetodecide.

    4.DRAWAREFERENCELINE

    Usingyourlevelandpencil,drawastraightlineacrosstheareawhereyoullbelayingthe

    boards.Thiswillbeyourstartingpointandmakesurethatyourfirstboardsarecompletelylevel

    andstraight,sothewalldoesntgetcrooked!

  • 5.ADDPLANKSONREFERENCELINE

    Usingyourliquidnails(orotherconstructionadhesive)applyaliberalamounttothebackof

    yourfirstboard.Placethefirstboarddirectlyaboveorbelowyourreferencelineandpressit

    ontothewall.Makesurethisplankislevel.Then,applyasecondboardontheothersideofthe

  • referencelinestaggeringtheboardsasshownbelow.

  • 6.FILLINTHEENTIRESPACE

    Usingamitersawtocut/trimboardsasneeded,fillintheentirespacestaringwiththeboards

    alongthereferenceline.Simplyrepeatthestepsoverandoveruntilyourprojectiscomplete.

    STEPBYSTEPGUIDE:

    STEP1:CUTTHE4PALLETBOARDSTO36INCHES.

  • Whileyoumayormaynotwanttheboardstobeexactlyevenyouwanttostartbymaking

    themallabout36incheslong.Simplymarkthemeasurementswithyourpencil,thenuseyour

    mitersawtomakethecuts:

    STEP2:MEASUREANDMARKSHELVES

  • Forthebottomshelf,thedesignshownonlyusedabout7inchesofshelf.Someasureoneof

    yourshelvesto7inchesandthencutit.Forthetopshelf,thisdesignmakesitan11inchshelf.

    Socutyoursecondshelfto11inches:

  • STEP3:CUTTHESHELVES

  • Whiletheseshelvesare7incheswideand11incheswide,respectivelyyoucouldtechnically

    makethemaslongorasshortasyoudlike,dependingonwhatyouplantohangonthem.

    STEP4:MARKANDCUTTHEBRACES

    Takeyouroneinchscrapboardandmarkitwithapencilsoyoucanget2piecesoutofit.As

    shownbelow,these2piecesaregoingtobeonthebackofyourshelfandserveasabrace,to

    makeitmorestable.Inthiscase,simplymarkyourscrapboardsoitisalittlelessthanthewidth

    ofyourshelf.Onceyouvemarkedit,cutyour1inchboardsoyouget2backbracesoutofit.

    STEP5:FLIPYOURPALLETBOARDSOVERANDATTACHTHEBRACES

  • Onceyouveflippedtheboardssoyouarenowworkingonwhatwillbethebacksideofyour

    shelf,simplyputyourbracesinplaceandattachthemwithoneinchscrews,usingatleast3

    screwsspacedthroughoutyourbrace.(Note:placesyourbraceswhereyouplantoputyour

    shelves,asthebraceswillprovideextrasupportandgiveyoumorewoodtoscrewintowhen

    youattachtheshelves.)

  • STEP6:LEVELANDMARKYOURSHELVES

  • Usingasmalllevelandyourpencil,putyourshelvesinplaceonthefrontofyourshelvingunit.

    Rememberthatyourshelvesshouldbedirectlyontopofthebracesyouattachedtotheback,

    sotheyhaveextrasupport.Markalineonbothsides,soyoucanseewhereyourshelfwillbe

    attached.

    STEP7:PREDRILLYOURHOLES

  • Fliptheshelfonitsside,andholdyourshelfintoplacefirmlyusingyourpencilmarkstomake

    sureyouareholdingitlevelandinplace.Then,useyourdrillbittodrillstraightthroughyour

    brace,theshelfback,andtheshelvingboard.Predrillingyourholeswillmakeputtingthe

    screwsinawholeloteasier!

    STEP8:SCREWINONESIDEOFTHESHELF

  • Afteryouvedrilledthepilothole,putoneofyour21/2inchscrewsintothathole,whichwill

    attachonesideofyourshelf.

    STEP9:LEVELTHESHELFBEFOREPUTTINGINYOURSECONDSCREW

  • Byonlyputtinginyourfirstscrew,thisgivesyouachancetopulloutasmalllevelandmake

    sureyourshelfisperfectlystraight,beforeputtinginyoursecondandfinal21/2inchscrew.

    Onceitsconfirmedtobelevel,repeatstep8ontheothersideoftheshelf,drillingapilothole

    andputtinginyoursecondscrew.

    STEP10:REPEATFORSHELF#2

  • Attachyoursecondshelffollowingthesamestepsthatyouusedforthefirstoneremember

    thatdrillingpilotholeswillmakeputtingyourscrewsinmucheasier.

    STEP11:ATTACHYOURRUSTICHOOK

  • Onereasonforleavingtheshelvesalittlemorenarrowinthisdesignissoyoucanaddarustic

    lookinghooktohangahat,jacket,etc.nexttoyourshelves.Ifyouhaveone,findavintage

    lookinghookandsimplyattachitwitha1inchscrew.

    1.DISASSEMBLEPALLETS

    Everyonehasafavorite(veryrelativeterm)waytodismantlepallets.However,ifyourenot

    familiarwiththeprocess,orarelookingfortips,clickthelinkbelowtocheckoutourguide.

  • 2.CUTEACHPLANKTO21/2INCHES

    Thetablewillfitmoreplankstomakeupthetabletopifeachboardiscutdownto21/2inches.

    Italsoensuresastraightedgeoneachboard,helpingeachplanktofittightlyagainstone

    another.

    Thetutorialshowseachboardbeingplanedbeforeassembly.Thiswillhelpthegraintostand

    out,butisntentirelynecessary.However,ifyoudonotplanetheboards,Isuggestsandinga

    littletocleanthewoodup(whichalsohelpsexposethewoodgrain).

  • 3.MAKE45DEGREEANGLES

  • Cutoneendofeachofthe21/2inchboardsata45degreeangle.Ifyouhaveatablesawor

    amitersaw,thisisthebesttimetouseit.However,ifallyouhaveisacircularsaw,justmake

    suretomarkthe45degreeanglewithabevel.

    4.ASSEMBLECUTWOODPLANKS&ATTACHTOBASE

    Irecommendliningupallofyourpieces(45degreeangleinside)toensureyouhaveenough,

    andsothatyoudontgetintoasituationwhereyouhavetodisassembleeverything.

    Drawastraightlinedownthecenteroftheplywood.

    Onceyoureconfidentinyourdesign,startattachingeachboardontotheplywoodbyaddinga

    layerofwoodglue.Next,useanailgun(orhammerandfinishnails)attachingtheboardonto

    theplywood.
