From the Director's Desk10 ways to be happy in 2016!

There is no magic pill for happiness says, Shradha Sharma. But here's what you can do to be happy!

If there was a magic pill for happiness, success and a fulfilling life, I would have taken it first.

After all, isn't the whole purpose of life to find happiness?

So in a real world where happiness is as elusive as a steadily growing bank balance, let me share with you some of the things that ensure happiness.

Before you put on that smirk, I would say, try it out and see what happens.I tried it through last year (2014) and it worked like magic.

So here are some things that work better than magical pills:

1. Work (and always) for a win-win partnership instead of me-win.

If you win, I win and we both win.(Think how you can do that when you go for your next pitch, demo or even a family outing).

2. Small is big.

Small leads to big and small will be your biggest strength.

How do you become big? How do you achieve greatness? I don't know.

But, one thing that makes big is doing the same small thing, everyday. Every single day.

These same small steps every day, suddenly explodes into something big.

Try it out, be it weight loss, more revenues, more customers, or in every walk of life, if you are doing the same stuff daily diligently and passionately, you will start seeing results.

And, those results will surprise you. It sneaks on you while you are busy doing the same small things.

3. Nobody cares, truly.

Nobody cares if you are upset, hurt or lying in the ditch.

So why bother?

Don't sweat over it and please, please don't brood over it.

One thing you will learn the more you live and the more mistakes you make is that people (as a collective entity) are blessed with very short memory and in many ways, a forgiving memory.

So why bother? Why feel upset?

See how you can cut down on your 'bad time' feeling and use it to work on that dreadful presentation or just go for a run.

Trust me, do it and experience it.

Get seriously busy whenever that low feeling creeps in.

4. Laugh, laugh and laugh a little bit more.

Laugh at yourself; laugh at your mistakes; laugh at your competitors; laugh when VCs ridicule you and laugh even when nobody is laughing with you.

Laughing is a best therapy.

I laughed a lot this year to the utter disgust and horror of my close ones. (Yes, I have a scary way of laughing and no scorn deters me to laugh just a little bit more).

5. Aim higher.

We all know we need to aim higher, we all think we aim higher but actually life has a way of taking over this pursuit of ours.

It comes in the form of daily work, immediate issues that needs to be resolved, family problem that needs to be addressed, targets that need to be met and so on and on.

Also, the world is always watching with that smirk, 'oh! let's see if you can do it'.

And then we get into the trap of living a life and dreaming a little less.

Come on, it's your life, you can climb the mountain, you can fall in the ditch with face smeared in mud, you can go naked and you can aim higher of ruling the world.

It's addictive.

Start aiming for what the world sees as an impossible dream. And see how the magic starts.

6. Ask, beg and seek all the help.

'Sorry, I don't know it, could you please help me?' is probably one of the best lines you can say throughout the year.

What's wrong in not knowing it all and what's wrong in saying it loud? P4

My Dear Family Members,

October month - the first month of Q3 has ended. Predominantly the month witnessed Dussehara and Diwali celebrations. Hopefully we all had a good time and spent the occasion with family. Each of us had a good long break from work which is also very important.

Not much happened on our business front. Virtually the month was a washout and we could accomplish nothing much. Two more months of the quarter is left – November and December. Again the going does not seem to be taking off in the right direction as desired. We have to devise means strategies and employ the same at the start of the new quarter we should look forward to a much better month in comparison to our other months already gone by. And one way of doing it is – GOING BACK TO THE BASICS. This will mean employing all those devises and strategies that we used to do in our starting days. And the first thing to do is doing the basics. I want to start with one item – DVR. I am asking all the sales personnel to start filling in their DVRs and send me the same to me on a daily basis. Please understand we should have a track of activities that we plan to do and actually end up doing in the days towards accomplishing our task. And DVR records this. If we do it in the right earnest it will give us an idea if we are spending our day in the right direction or it needs course correction. So to start with DVRs are a must and there will be monetary penalties if it is not adhered to.

Collection front looks very bleak and again we are still bleeding with huge amount unrecovered payment in our debtor's list. Especially with the Tiscon Team. The old outstanding is mounting and it needs to be cleared on war footing. And for new orders the amount left over for collection after a transaction is done needs to be cleared the next day . Otherwise it will heap up and clearance later will be an issue. I am confident this month will be a much better month as all disturbances and distractions are over and its time for more focussed action and results. All the very best for the month and I am sure each one of you will come up with a better performance this month. God speed and God Bless !

Let's ask, ask and ask for help.

'I need your help, please help me,' is my favourite line.

But let me add that the amount of 'no, I am busy' response I get is not funny.

But I don't give up and then suddenly magic happens and from somewhere, someone just says, I will help you and that help covers up for all the 'Nos'.

Please ask this year for help and please ask it loud and clear, and persistently.

7. Thanks, thanks and thanks so much.

Thank when you get up in the morning.

And thank when you are going off to sleep.

Thank your family everyday and thank your colleagues, thank the one who is closest to you and thank your enemy.

There is no more power bigger than the power of a genuine, heartfelt thank you. More than its effect on the other, it affects you tremendously.

You are constantly practicing being happy and fulfilled.

Please thank a lot in 2015 and experience its potency first hand.

8. Say 'No' every day.

My biggest challenge has been with saying no.

It requires a lot of courage to say no.

I don't want to hurt anyone and in the process I say yes to everything. Result.

I hurt and disappoint a lot more people than I would have, had I said no in the first place.

I have learnt to say No this year.

It's one life we have, if I say no to going out for a startup outing, will it give me more blessed time with my dogs?

If yes, what do I want from my life, from my day and from my years which are fast passing by? Ask these questions and saying 'No' becomes easier.

9. Start enjoying being alone.

If you are an entrepreneur or if you are planning to be one, one thing that will be your constant companion is an acute sense of loneliness.

Why just entrepreneur, if you are you with a big dream and an unbridled passion to excel you will experience loneliness.

I experience it regularly. Start enjoying

Smoking Thrills but Kills !!

406 not out...

that loneliness, that pain of not being understood. How?

For me it was connecting with so many authors like Rebecca Solnit, Augustus Burroughs and reading their work.

Somewhere I could connect to their experiences and know that somewhere, someone is experiencing exactly what I am.

It becomes therapeutic. Start analysing, understanding and caring for yourself a little bit more.

10. Think about your story.

What is your story going to be?

It's easy to get distracted, to start wishing differently and start seeing your story differently.

What will be the story of you?

If you had to write your own memoir of the year, what will it be like?

What did you chase, what did you win and did you really win what you wanted to win?

Start thinking about yourself.

Start thinking about your story for this year.

It's amazing to have that mental clarity at some level.

You will be surprised how you will respond to the media news of 100 billion valuations or for that matter someone shutting down shop.

Let's make it a truly happy year. All the very best to you, me and us.

“So smoking is the perfect way to commit suicide without actually dying. I smoke because it's bad, it's really simple”. - Damien Hirst

Smoking or for that matter any harmful items like gutkha, paan and paan masala, chewing tobacco, supari together contribute to oral cancer. And oral cancer is the most common cancer in India. It accounts for 30% of all cancers in India.

And recently an enlightened and bright colleague of ours – Pritam Dash has taken this initiative to make our office a smoke free zone. On 29th October he gathered all the staff of our office and introduced this project of his. He requested all employees present not to smoke or chew gutkha, paan and paan masala, chewing tobacco, supari etc in office during office time. He started to collect all packs of cigarette / gutkha/ paan etc available in person with all employees in the office etc and tore them to shreds and throw them in the dustbin to symbolically show quitting of this habit.

He has started this awareness initiative to educate and ensure all employess who have this habit and ensure they quit this fatal habit immediately. He himself has led by example and has been successful in abstaining from this habit since the start. A few followers in our office have already started to add up to his club and hopefully many more will join and make this effort of Pritam a success. Way to go Pritam.... keep up the good work !!

2. Ferrucio Lamborghini | Lamborghini

Ferrucio was originally a farmer who made tractors. His business was very successful and he was among the most wealthy in Italy. He owned Ferrari among other super cars. The Ferrari used to give him constant trouble. Being a mechanic, he tried to fix the problem and found out that his Ferrari had the same clutch as used in one of his tractors."All my Ferraris had clutch problems. When you drove normally, everything was fine. But when you were going hard, the clutch would slip under acceleration; it just wasn't up to the job.”

Ferrucio went to the service guys regularly to have a clutch rebuilt or renewed, and every time, the car was taken away for several hours and he was not allowed to watch it being repaired. The problem with the clutch was never cured, so Ferrucio decided to talk to Enzo Ferrari. He had to wait for him a very long time.

'Ferrari, your cars are rubbish!' Ferrucio complained. Il Commendatore was furious. "Lamborghini, you may be able to drive a tractor but you will never be able to handle a Ferrari Properly.' This was the point when he finally decided to make a perfect car. Yes, Lamborghini.

3. Colonel Sanders | Kentucky Fried Chicken

At 65 years of age, Colonel Sanders received his first social security cheque of $99. He was broke, owned a small house and a beat up car.He made a decision that things had to change. His friends used to like his chicken recipe very much. The fact that this was the only novel idea he had, he decided to act upon it.

He left Kentucky and started his travels to different US states to sell his idea. He would tell restaurant owners that he had a chicken recipe which people liked and he was ready to give it to them for free, in return for a small percentage on the items sold. He got rejections after rejections, but did not give up. In fact, he got over 1000 rejections.

He got 1009 NO's before he got his first Yes. With that one success Colonel Hartland Sanders changed the eating habits of the whole world with Kentucky Fried Chicken, popularly known as KFC.

4. Soichiro Honda | Honda Motor Co.

Soichiro Honda was a mechanic at a garage. His job was to tune cars to prepare them for races. Honda founded Tōkai Seiki, a piston rings manufacturing company in 1937.

This company won a contract to supply piston rings to an established automobile company - Toyota. But soon after, he lost the contract due to the poor quality of the products. He took time out to better understand Toyota's quality control processes, and by 1941, Honda was able to mass produce piston rings acceptable to Toyota.

Toyota took a 40% stake in his company, but Honda was demoted from president to senior managing director. Tōkai Seiki's manufacturing plants were destroyed in US bomb attacks in 1944. Honda sold the salvageable remains of the company to Toyota and used the proceeds to found the Honda Technical Research Institute in October 1946.

He worked with a staff of 12 men in a 172-square-foot shack. They built and sold improvised motorized bicycles by building their own copy of Tohatsu engines, and supplying these to customers to attach to their bicycles. Honda Motor Company grew in a short time to become the world's largest manufacturer of motorcycles by 1964.

Honda thereafter entered into mini pick-up trucks & finally into the car segment and today is a serious competitor to Toyota.

It's easy to look at these companies and think, “I could never do something like this.” Of course, all of these companies took decades to get where they are today. But they had an idea and they believed in it and most importantly, they started.

How many times should you try ....to get SUCCESS !!What does it take to start up? A brilliant idea? A great team? Money? Yes. All of those things. But more than anything what it takes, is belief. A belief that there is significance to the problem being addressed, and that the solution is something which the consumer wants. It is really amazing how most large companies have such humble stories of starting up. All of them started with nothing but just plain conviction. Here we have compiled for you four short stories of starting up of (now) famous companies:

1. Fred Smith | Federal Express

Fred Smith was an undergraduate at Yale University in 1965. As part of the coursework, he wrote an economics paper exploring the process of transportation of goods in the United States. He found that the shippers relied on transporting large packages across the United States by means of truck or passenger airplanes. Smith thought of a more efficient transportation idea. He wrote a last minute paper on how a company carrying small, essential items by plane could be a much better business. He, however, did not go into details about how to actually run such a company. His paper was graded “C”. But Smith did not give up on the idea and launched the company in 1971.

But within three years of the founding of the company, Federal Express was on the verge of bankruptcy. It was losing over $1 million a month, due to the rising fuel costs. At its zenith, the company had just $5000 to its name. Smith made a final pitch to General Dynamics for more funding. The request was turned down.

Most ordinary people would have quit at this point and shut down the company. Not Fred Smith. What he did next is easily the boldest move by the founder of a company. Smith flew to Las Vegas and played Black Jack that weekend with the remaining company funds. Yes, all of the $5000. On Monday, the management of the company had a pleasant surprise lined up. FedEx had $32,000 in its bank account, which was just enough to cover the fuel for their planes and to continue operating a few days more.

Soon after, the company was able to raise significant amounts in funding. Today FedEx is a global giant with operations in more than 220 countries and territories and an annual revenue of US $45 billion.
