Hello Division 18!

It has been a pleasure serving and working with you all for

these past four months. Meeting the majority of you has repeatedly showed me why Division 11/18c contains the most passionate and spirited Key Clubbers in the Pacific Northwest. With the school year coming up in a month or so, I urge you all to continue making your plans for the Key Club year and get excited for service! This year, I hope to have an excellent showing as a division at DCON 2015 and I would encourage you all to plan and begin fundraising as soon as you deem fit. I truly feel blessed for being a part of Division 11/18c and I hope to continue to work with you all this coming year. The Eliminate Project, Kiwanis International and UNICEF have joined forces to eliminate maternal and neonatal tetanus. Neonatal tetanus kills one

baby every nine minutes—nearly 60,000 newborn children every year. A significant number of women also die due to maternal tetanus. The effects of the

disease are excruciating—tiny newborns suffer repeated, painful convulsions and extreme

sensitivity to light and touch.

To eliminate MNT from the Earth, 129 million mothers and their future babies must be immunized.

This requires vaccines, syringes, safe storage, transportation, thousands of skilled staff and more. It will take $110 million—and the dedicated work of UNICEF and every member of the Kiwanis family.

Kiwanis and UNICEF joined forces to tackle iodine deficiency disorders, achieving one of the most significant public health successes of the 20th

century. Now, together, they are eliminating MNT from the face of the Earth. In doing so, the project will reach the poorest, most neglected mothers and babies with additional lifesaving health care. The

end of this one disease means the beginning of better health for so many families.

ABBOTSFORD TRADITIONAL SECONDARY

Hello Everyone!

The ATSS has been growing this year and the month of November was definitely a big one for ourselves. The highlight of the month had been the pancake breakfast that we held. It involved a huge team effort from almost each member in the club, and the attendance we had for a morning event was phenomenal. There were many things to do such as cooking, set up, clean up and sales. We had a great turnout from members ranging from grade 9-12 which sent a positive vibe throughout the club. The ATSS Key Club was officially registered, which helps to keep our club active. The DCM was also a lot of fun for our club as the skating kept a loose and fun attitude with everyone and we got to meet the new presidents from the recently chartered schools. All in all, this was a solid month for our club and we hope to continuously grow throughout the year.

Thanks,

Roop Warriach and Gaurav Sandhar

GARIBALDI SECONDARY

This month, the Garibaldi Key Club has been very busy. We have been planning for the Christmas party on December 13 that we will be hosting for the less fortunate families in our community who in many cases cannot afford to celebrate Christmas. A committee has been formed which has worked closely with the Kiwanis club for the past four weeks (and continues to work) on planning this event and ensuring that everything is ready for the families. The rest of us in the club have been helping them by running a toy drive in our school, so we can give lightly used or new toys to the children coming to the party, there are 107 children coming and we ran the toy drive from November 17-28 and collected around 200 toys, not including the toys that Thomas Haney Secondary School (THSS) who has also been collecting. THSS is helping us run and prepare for this event too, they are not only collecting toys but are also wrapping them for the kids. We expect 200 families to come and so, over the next two weeks we will be preparing a lot for it! Also, November 29 our club ran a bottle drive to which ten of our members came and helped out, and we raised 68.10$ for Project Eliminate.

ROBERT BATEMAN SECONDARYOver the past month, members of Bateman's Key Club have been extremely active in their school as well community. In the month of November, Operation Christmas Child was our primary focus and we had a great experience volunteering at Northview Community Church and helping them with the collection and organization of these Christmas shoeboxes. It was quite an enjoyable experience for all members that participated, despite the cold. Another out of school volunteer opportunity we gave to our members was with the helping of organizing non-perishable food items at the Abbotsford Food Bank. After two hours of volunteering, members enjoyed a Key Club social at a nearby Tim Hortons to get to know each other and be rewarded for their hard work. For the month of November, I am extremely proud and thankful for the high amount of member participation at each of these out of school events. Without you, this would not be possible. Also, shout out to Hannah Weinkauf for being member of the month and other honourable mentions include Amrit Sangha and Brandon Kondolay.

G.W. GRAHAM SECONDARY

During the month of November, G.W. Graham’s Key Club participated in several Kiwanis projects. On November 15th, members assisted the Kiwanis Club of Sardis with their monthly soup kitchen as a part of Key Club Week. We helped with set-up and the preparation and serving of food. As a club service project for Key Club Week our club made friendship bracelets for the Hospice Society of Chilliwack. Our club also participated in the Kiwanis Club of Sardis’s annual Children’s Christmas party. Key Clubber’s bought and wrapped gifts for kids in need over the Christmas holidays during the month of November. On the day of the party members served food, made crafts with the kids and their parents, sang Christmas carols, and distributed the kids and their parents. In preparation for DCON, we began planning Krispy Kreme donut and chocolate-covered almond fundraisers to raise money during the month of December.

YALE SECONDARY

Yale's Key Club had a wonderful start to November as we had our 22 hour famine. Focusing on one of the top three organizations we had originally planned to raise money for this year, all the proceeds went to KCCP (Kiwanis Children's Cancer Program). We sold tickets for $15 each and were able to make $600 that one night as 40 members attended!

There are many exciting volunteer opportunities as Christmas is approaching such as Angel Tree, and bell ringing for Salvation Army. As well our school is donating $500 for members to spend on gifts for seven students that are struggling with financial needs at our school. We will be meeting one day after school to go shopping for their presents! Yale is also having a Christmas Tree Decorating Contest. Each department (music, athletics, sciences, etc.) will have their own tree, and members will try to get students to donate for a certain tree.

We are all looking forward to getting together with our division for the Christmas Potluck on the 11th! Special welcome to Mouat and Thomas Haney for joining Key Club, and Merry Christmas to everyone in advance!
