  • From Fr. Jairo

We are celebrating the Solemnity of the Epiphany also known as the Three Kings or Magi. On this solemnity, I always remember my time living in Cologne, Germany for two years. I had the opportunity to see the cathedral almost every day and think about the Three Kings. The Shrine of the Three Kings is in Cologne Cathedral (German Dreikönigsschrein or Der Dreikönigenschrein). The Tomb of the Three Kings, or Tomb of the Three Magi is a reliquary traditionally believed to contain the bones of the Biblical Magi, also known as the Three Kings or the Three Wise Men. My time in Germany was a great experience because I was there when the wall came down.

God reveals himself to the Jews through the Scriptures, and to the Gentiles through nature. Since the Magi were Gentiles, Matthew shows them receiving a revelation through astrology. The story

highlights the paradox of how the Jews who have the Scripture reject Jesus, while Gentiles come and, with the help of the Scriptures, find and adore him.

There is little to be gained by speculating where the Magi came from and what exactly the star was. The star was only the means by which a great mystery was revealed, the revelation of Christ as the savior of the Gentiles too. The Magi can serve as models for us on our faith journey. They were single minded. They refused to be put off by difficulties and hardships. They have been attentive to the marvels of the universe, and there they have read signs in the heavens. They represent all who search for truth in the wonders of creation and in the wisdom of their own cultures. Because they searched with eyes of faith they were able to recognize the gift of God when they found him, even though he did not conform to their initial perception of a royal heir. When they found Christ they offered him Gold, frankincense, and myrrh. This shows what happens to those who find Christ. Their hearts are awakened and burst into life. When we find Christ and offer our love to him, he will help us to open up the treasures of goodness that lie buried inside us, so that we can offer gifts to our brothers and sisters, especially those who are poor as Christ was.

Having worshipped Christ, the Magi returned to their own country by another route. This

suggests not just a new geographical route, but a new mentality. Having met Christ and heard his Gospel, we too will travel through life by a different route. We will have different attitudes, different values, and different goals. It is impossible to encounter Christ without it affecting the way we live our lives. Their encounter shows that in Christ the light of God is given to all people of good will, Jew and non-Jew alike.

The manifestation of God among us changes the way in which we perceive one another. Christ’s birth provides us with the light by which we see a new criterion for relating.

The Magi who come in faith to worship the child represent the multi-ethnic and cultural diversity in civic and parish situations as well as the many religions of the world. To us, who are related no longer merely by blood affiliation or national origin, Christ offers the spirit of holiness as the ground for our relationships. This new universal belonging will be manifest in the community of believers, who live no longer in the darkness or in exclusivity and sin but by a new dispensation of grace. All people, regardless of race or ethnic origin, can be co-heirs with Christ.

The poverty of Jesus is a challenge to us too. It gives us an opportunity to open our hearts. To open one’s heart is to begin to live. Jesus no longer needs our gifts. But other people may. He wants us to share ourselves with one another. And we too will find ourselves enriched if, as a result of knowing Jesus, we are able to open the treasures of our hearts and share with others.

Archbishop Annual Campaign: Thank you for your great generosity. We have already reached our goal of $23,599.98. At this time, our Divine Mercy parish has donated $24,235.30 which is 102.7 %. May God bless your generous hearts!

New Year: May all your dreams come true and all your hopes be fulfilled! I hope your life will be full of surprise and joy in the New Year that’s about to begin. May you be blessed with everything you want in life; may God help us to be holy. Re-member all the good memories you have made and know that your life will be so full of wonders in the coming year.

  • With Covid causing many more absences, we are asking parents to ensure that make-up work is done and returned to your child’s class ASAP. Also, please, notify the CFF office when your child is going to be absent.

Students received notes to bring home to their parents informing them of when they return after Christmas break and which Wednesdays they will meet next semester. If you did not get this note, please call the CFF office (402-352-2149) ASAP. Please, keep this note where you can see it to remind you when to send your children to class.

Students in Fr. Gerry’s CFF Level 7 should be doing the classes online and writing in your

Decision Point books as per guidelines given at the parent’s meeting in November. When you return to classes in January, you should bring your books with

Chapters/Sessions 1 – 6 done. Group 1 will meet on Jan. 6, Group 2 on Jan. 13 and Group 3 on Jan 20 in St. Mary’s church basement.
