Page 8: Dividing fractions from whole numbers

Let’s get started!

Page 9: Dividing fractions from whole numbers

Let’s try 1 ÷ ½

• If we have one whole, • And we divide by ½ we get two.• We get two because one cut into two, leaves

us with two pieces.

See, two pieces!

Page 10: Dividing fractions from whole numbers

Now let’s try 1 ÷ ¼

• If we have one whole,• And we divide by ¼ we get four pieces.• We get four because one cut into fourths,

leaves us with four pieces.

Are you getting it ?

Dividing Whole Numbers by a Fraction

Page 17: Dividing fractions from whole numbers

• First start with getting something that is one whole . For example, I am using a hamburger.

Page 18: Dividing fractions from whole numbers

• Now you have to think of a fraction. I’m going to use thirds. Look at how I divide my whole hamburger into thirds.

Page 19: Dividing fractions from whole numbers

• From that example you now know that one whole divided by one third is three. Some people think that you can not get a number bigger then what you started with but in this case you can.

Page 20: Dividing fractions from whole numbers

• Just so you are sure you know how to divide a whole number by a fraction we are going to do one more and this time we’re using a pencil into halves.

Page 21: Dividing fractions from whole numbers

• We’re doing the same exact thing except we’re dividing a pencil into halves and from this example we see you get two!

Can you Divide a Whole Dinosaur into a Fraction?

By: Joseph Carola

Page 50: Dividing fractions from whole numbers

The dinosaur is a whole you can divide a whole into thirds , fourths, even fifths . If you can divide any whole into any fraction as long as you still cut or reduce it.(reduce : to make it smaller.)

Page 51: Dividing fractions from whole numbers

Now the dinosaur’s tail will be cut into fifths . Here is an example of a dinosaur’s tail being cut or reduced in fifths. If you put five fifths all together they make a whole any fraction can make a whole.

Page 52: Dividing fractions from whole numbers

So I just divide a dinosaurs tail into fifths and you can also cut him into a half.(A half is a whole cut in two.) So now I have two halves.

Page 53: Dividing fractions from whole numbers

Now lets cut it into one third. Now you see one third. We can also make two thirds or three thirds which is one whole.

Page 80: Dividing fractions from whole numbers

PINKIE This is Pinkie! Pinkie likes to divide fractions! Pinkie is going to help us divide her cake!

Page 81: Dividing fractions from whole numbers

PINKIE DIVIDES 1÷ 1/4 Pinkie has a cake she can divide into many

fractions. Pinkie is going to divide it into fourths and

halves. Right now we are dividing it into fourths.

Pinkie finds the reciprocal of ¼ and multiplies 1 by the reciprocal which is 4/1. Then Pinkie reduces the answer.

After

Page 82: Dividing fractions from whole numbers

PINKIE DIVIDES 1 BY ½=2! Next we divide the cake by 1/2 We know what to do from the previous

division problem. Pinkie found out that 1 divided by ½=2!

Star Star Teaches Dividing by a Fraction

By Starlena James

Page 103: Dividing fractions from whole numbers

This is a whole candy bar.

• We are going to divide 1 ¼

Page 104: Dividing fractions from whole numbers

We divide the candy bar into four pieces.

• So when we divide 1 by ¼ we get 4

Page 105: Dividing fractions from whole numbers

We are going to divide 2 divided by ½

Page 106: Dividing fractions from whole numbers

First we find the reciprocal of ½ which is 2/1 then you multiply 2/1 x 2/1 which is four.

Page 107: Dividing fractions from whole numbers

Star Star wants to cut paper into thirds.

Page 108: Dividing fractions from whole numbers

Now you know how to divide by a fraction!!!!

Page 110: Dividing fractions from whole numbers

Let’s divide!

Page 111: Dividing fractions from whole numbers

Muffin wants to give her neighbor a half of her pie but doesn't know how to divide, help Muffin divide her pie in half.

Page 112: Dividing fractions from whole numbers

Great job! Now Muffin can give her neighbor half of her pie.

1 whole pie divided by ½ = 2 halves of a pie.

Page 113: Dividing fractions from whole numbers

Help Muffin divide the cinnamon roll into thirds.

Muffin is having a Bake Sale. Toast and Strawberry wants the last cinnamon roll but so does Cupcake, Muffin doesn't know what to do, because she doesn’t know how to divide!

Page 114: Dividing fractions from whole numbers

Great Job! Now Muffin can give Toast, Peanut Butter, and Cupcake a piece of a cinnamon roll.

1 whole cinnamon roll divided by 1/3 = 3 pieces of a cinnamon roll.
