General • Activities

1. Students should schedule within the next week to visit a Buddhist temple or a Masque of the Muslim faith.

2. Students should write a reflection paper from 1-2 pages discussing their experiences in the temple or masque.

3. Every student should write a 2-3 page paper discussing general educational diversities within this particular school

4. Students will be assigned a partner in class to compare their general diversity paper with, and then formulate a 4-6 page paper on their findings

5. Students should then with their partner prepare a 5 minute presentation for class discussion.

Teacher Resource Activities• 5 Activities 1. Students should write a paper discussing their ethnicity and heritage.

2. Students should research the 5 given websites and write a 1-2 page paper highlighting what they think is the most important teacher resource for learning in a diverse environment.

3. Students will play diversity checkers. A game to show the many different diversities that are in the educational system.

4. Students are to find a teacher resource website other than the websites given and write a 1 page paper on their findings.

5. Students are to prepare a 3 minute presentation on the website they researched.

Age Diversity and Discrimination Activities

1. Students should interview a grandparent or anyone over 65 years of age.

2. After asking the questions from the handout in the interview students should write a 2-3 page paper on their findings.

3. Students should, through research from the given websites, write a 1-2 page reflection paper on a business in the U.S. that has committed age discrimination.

Diversity in Belief Systems/Religions Activities

1. Students should pick a religion other than their own and do research on it.2. Students should then present a 3 sided display board presentation on the religion they have chosen.3. Students then should compare and contrast the religion they have chosen to research with another religion, and write up a 1-2 page paper highlighting their findings.4. Students will participate in Religious Jeopardy after studying my religion handout. A game designed by me for active learning.5. Students should interview a pastor, priest, rabbi, or any other religious figure for discussion in class.

Class Diversity Activities

1. Students will research the 5 websites and write a 1 page reflection on what they found to be important.

2. Students should do research and write a 2-3 page paper discussing the different classes in the U.S.

3. Then students should work with a partner to collaborate a 3-4 page paper dealing with what they learned from activity 2.

4. Students should then work in groups of four to formulate a 7 minute presentation discussing classes and how it relates to poverty.

5. Students will participate in the class quiz bowl.

Exceptionalities

Exceptionalities Activities

1. Students should shadow a special educator during study Hall.

2. Students should prepare a short presentation to discuss what kinds of exceptional students are in our school.

3. Students should research a particular exceptionality and write a 1 page reflection paper describing it.

4. Students should devise through research a plan for accommodating students with exceptionalities.

5. Students should then volunteer for a week to tutor a student with an exceptionality and write a 1 page reflection to be read in class.

Activities for Disabilities

1. Students should talk to the special educator in the building and find out all the different disabilities students have at our school.

2. Students should then pick a disability and research it , and write a 1-2 page reflection paper on it.

3. Students should study the alphabet of disabilities handout I provided and prepare for a short quiz over it.

4. Students should write a 1-2 page paper discussing accommodations for disabled students. This paper needs to address the appropriate method for handling disabled students in the general classroom.

5. At the end of this lesson students will participate in an activity called “LD does not mean lazy and dumb.”

Gender

Gender Activities

1. Students should write a 2 page paper discussing what it would be like to be the opposite sex.

2. Students should then be placed in groups of four and analyze ways to combat prejudice in gender, and prepare a 5 minute presentation for the class.

3. Students should research a particular case involving gender issue and write a 2 page paper discussing the significant information.

4. Students should interview any women over the age of 21, and ask if they have felt discriminated against in any way in their life. If they have not continue to search to find someone that has and write a 1 page paper discussing the situation.

5. Students will then be required to give a 3-5 minute presentation discussing their interview and the tupe of gender discrimination that took place.

Language Activities

1. Students should gather information through the given websites and any others dealing with language barriers in the U.S.

2. Students should then be placed in groups of 4 to give a quick introductory presentation on language issues.

3. Students should shadow a foreign language teacher for one period, and write a one page reflection on what they learned.

4. Students should pick a language other that English to research. Then briefly in a 3minute presentation explain the barriers people who speak that language face in our society.

5. Then students will develop methods to overcome language barriers in groups, and give a 5 minute presentation to the class.

1. Students should research sexual orientation on the web, and prepare a brief introductory presentation explaining what it is.

2. Students should then pick an important piece of legislation concerning sexual orientation and write a 2-3 page paper discussing the law and it’s significance.

3. Students should then work in groups and compare the different laws they researched.

4. Upon completion of activity number 3 students should write a group paper 4 pages in length discussing how the laws they researched are effective or ineffective.
