The P1000 7-channel power amplifier is rated at over 135

Multi-channelAlthough stereo systems (two speakersgiving the possibility of left to rightstaging) have been around for someyears, multi-channel systems are amore recent development. Originallyjust for full size cinemas, multi-channel systems set out to create awrap-around sound stage allowingsounds to move both left to right andfront to back. Home cinema receiversand processors decode signals fromvarious sources and then feed six oreven eight speakers with theappropriate sounds to create theseeffects.

Speaker positioningUnlike stereo, multi-channel surroundsound is mixed for a known listeningenvironmentthe cinema! This meansfor the best results in the home all we

Universal playbackIn recent years a multitude of discformats have arrived and are nowavailable on DVD players. Theseformats have a variety of advantagesand cover both music and movieplayback. The term Universal hasbeen loosely adopted in recent times toindicate that a player is compatiblewith all common formats. These aregenerally understood to be: DVD-Video, CD, DVD-Audio, SACD, VCDand S-VCD. Although at Arcam webelieve that performance for DVD

Low Frequency EffectsThrilling movie playback demandsmuch of an audio system. One of themost difficult things to achieve is deepand controlled bass. The explosions,bangs and crashes that litter todaystypical action movies are a goodexample. With this in mind, digitalsurround sound often carries adedicated track for these called a Point1 or Low Frequency Effects (LFE)channel. In systems with a dedicatedsub woofer, the bass portion of theseeffects is only replayed by the sub-woofer itself, which is designed tohandle these types of signal.

Video scalingAlthough video pictures are made upof a fixed number of horizontal lines(for example 576 for PAL in Europe,480 for NTSC in North America),most digital displays (Plasma, LCD,DLP, etc.) use a larger number of linesto fill the screen. Loudspeakers require high levels ofelectrical power to generate sound.Although in general the more poweran amplifier has, the better, allamplifiers are not created equally.While an amplifier with a largerpower supply will tend to control aloudspeaker more efficiently, it mustalso have other attributes such as lowdistortion and low noise floor tosound good.

CablesBecause systems can vary widely interms of quality and installation, thereare few standards for interconnectioncables. Cables can affect the soundquality quite considerably and shouldbe considered as much part of thesystem as other components. When

Bi-ampingBi-amping simply means driving thetweeter (high frequency) and woofer

DAB (Aerials)Your digital radio hi-fi tuner willcome with an indoor aerial, whichshould work well if youre well withina DAB coverage area.
