COMBATING CRIME: Gordons Bay Police and Gordons Bay Security held a joint
anti-crime operation last Friday. Members in uniform as well as in civilian clothes,
patrolled Dennehof Street and the surrounding area on foot and in vehicles. Accord-
ing to police spokesperson WO Nico Beukes, Dennehof Street has become a hotspot
area for crime as many pedestrians frequent this area. Beukes says the area is diffi-
cult to patrol by car as the road is closed due to construction work. Beukes has
asked pedestrians to be vigilant when using Dennehof Street and to report suspi-
cious-looking people to the Gordons Bay Police by phoning 021 856 2677.
Marchagainst crime
DALEEN FOUCH
Somerset West residents are uniting
against crime and plan to march down
Main Road on Saturday 17 August.
A permit for 300 people to march has been
obtained from local authorities and has re-
ceived the backing from the local police,
neighbourhoodwatchandHelderbergCrime
Watch.
Organiser of themarchandSomersetWest
resident, Stephen Leppan says the march is
only one event, but forms part of a bigger ini-
tiative to combat crime. Leppan says South
African residents like to sit back and wait
for the authorities to take action, but he be-
lieves it is time for the community to stand
up and take action.
The anti-crime march will start at 11:00
from Myburgh Road, opposite the Farm-
house coffee shop and will go all the way
down Main Road, around the traffic circle
and back to the beginning. Somerset West
residents do not feel safe in their own town
anymore, said Leppan. He says the current
crimewavecanonlybestoppedoncethecom-
munity is united with a single goal at hand
- to ensure a safe community.
He believes a breakdown in communica-
tion between the police and the community
forms a big part of the problem, but is of the
opinion that this is an issue that can be ad-
dressed. He intends using social media as a
way to breach the gap between the communi-
ty and police and to restore trust.
A community gathering with all relevant
role players is planned for the end ofAugust.
ForLeppan,whostarted theSomerset 1Fa-
cebook group, social media is one way to im-
prove communication. Somerset 1 was start-
ed in December 2013 and has over 4 000mem-
bers. He created the group to encourage
activism and as a way for modern societies
to rekindle a sense of community. The group
has already held several outreach efforts.

Mothers painful testimony heard
JAMEY GORDON
It was a painful expe-

were destroyed. When
my daughter came
home from high
school, all she hadwas

after the evictions.
This was the testi-
mony of a tearful 36-
year-old singlemother
of four, Nonhlanhla

ing at the ministerial
inquiry investigating
the Lwandle evictions
during the last round
of local public hear-
ings on Thursday 31 July.
Residents affected by the SA National
Roads Agency Limiteds (Sanral) forced
evictions in Asanda Village on 2 and 3
June, testified last Tuesday and Thurs-
day.
Lujabe told the ministerial inquiry her
home was demolished on 3 June. On this
day, shehadsentoneofherseven-year-old
twins, Linathi, to the shop while she was
getting herself and her other children
ready for school and work.
I heard a loud bang. It scared me. I
looked around and saw the same thing
happening as the previous day. I saw my
son crying on the other side. The police
would not allow him to come back, said
Lujabe.
Lujabe said people were running in all
directions and things were chaotic. Back

that tear gas was burn-

she looked around and
while searching for her
child, she saw her
neighbours TV play-

The painful experi-

It iswhale time inGordonsBay
Gentle giants of the sea
come under blue skies
from many a fathom below
to Gordons Bay
Breaths there a man
not called towards the sea
when whale spotting time it
be?
As waves splash over rocks
people come in flocks.
Calm days, woolly clouds
listen to the excitement of the
crowd.
A tinge of pink a tinge of yel-
low creates a wondrous sheen
but here in close there are
whales to be seen
Across the sunset sky
a flight of sea gulls go by.
Then a might splash of tail and
fin,
she releases a baby creature
from within.
As time ends another day
swimming in a peaceful golden
sea
a mother and her baby whale
could be seen.

to comment further.
Whether, crime is escalating at
an alarming rate is amatter of con-
jecture as precise comparative fig-
ures have not been released by
SAPS. But I will concede that cer-
tain types of crime seem to have
come to prominence, particularly
concerning businesses.
My point though is in your last
sentence where you refer to SAPS
andsecuritycompaniesdoingtheir
best, but they just cant cope.
In thisyouhave failed tomention

Somerset West Neighbourhood
Watch has over 2 000 members and
300 patrollers who work together
withSAPS,securitycompaniesand

We do this through Somerset
West NeighbourhoodWatch Radio,
which connects the different organ-
isations, security companies and

rest offenders.
This results in a significant
number of arrests each month that
are directly attributable to our in-

HiTony.Thank youforyour letter

I was trying to make in the last sen-
tence of the editorial comment is that
althoughSAPSandthesecuritycom-
panies are doing a sterling job - no
matter how much they do and how
hard they work - it still does just not
seem to be enoughbecause of the con-
tinual rise of criminal activity in our
area. My comments did not and in
no way draw any reference to the
Neighbourhood Watches, security
companies and SAPS not doing a
good job. The DistrictMail in fact
commends everyone involved in the
continuous fight against crime and
recognises the tremendous effort and
results gained by everyone involved

Anticrime
marchgets
thegoahead
Its wonderful to see residents final-
ly unite and stand together to fight
for something they believe in, in-
stead of sitting back and waiting for
the authorities to step in and do
something.
An example of this united front
will bewitnessedonSaturday17Au-
gust when hundreds of Somerset
West residents will come together
and march down Main Road in an
anti-crime march.
A permit for the march has al-
ready been obtained and the march
also has the backing from the SAPS,
neighbourhood watch and Helder-
berg Crime Watch.
The planned anti-crime march
will start at 11:00 from Myburgh
Road,oppositetheFarmhousecoffee
shop, and wind its way down Main
Road, going around the traffic circle
and then back to the start.
If all Helderberg residents could
join forces and organise similar
marches, criminals will realise that
we are united together in the fight
against crime and they will stay
away.

myn-skuld gewoonlik
baie duurder is as
langtermyn-skuld.
Kredietkaartskuld sal
byvoorbeeld die heel
duurste wees, gevolg
deur persoonlike le-
nings, motorfinansie-
ring en daarna huis-
verbande wat gewoon-
lik die goedkoopste is.
Dit sal dus wys wees
om eerste jou duur
skuld so vinnig as
moontlik af te betaal
voordat jy ekstra geld
in jou huisverband
plaas. Jy kan selfs die beskikbare
limiet op jou huisverband gebruik
om joukorttermyn-skuld te delg en
om sodoende rente te bespaar. In-
dien jy dit doen, is dit egter baie be-
langrik dat jy sal voortgaan om die
bestaande paaiement dieselfde te
hou en om aan te hou betaal op jou
verband. Kom ons neem n voor-
beeld.
Veronderstel jouhuisverband se
rentekoers is teen prima (8.5%) en
joukredietkaart is 18%tot 22%met
n skuldbedrag van R50 000 op die
kaart.NeemR50 000vanafdiehuis-
verband en betaal die kredietkaart
af. Gaan voort om die maandelikse
betaling wat jy voorheen op die
kaart betaal het, op jou
verband te betaal. Die
besparing op rente oor
vyf jaar is R16 000.
Party mense spog
daarmee dat hy sy mo-
tor sommer op sy huis-
verband gekoop het en
nou baie rente spaar.
Dit kan so wees, maar
indien hy nie die terug-
betaling oor vyf jaar be-
reken nie, maar oor die
20 jaarvandie verband,
gaanhy inteendeel baie
meer rente betaal.
Al hierdie slim bere-
keninge sal natuurlik glad nie
werk as jy nie gedissiplineerd is
metdie terugbetalingsnie. Jymoet
dieselfde bedrag wat jy op jou kre-
dietkaart betaal het, ook in jou
huisverband aanhou betaal, en op-
hou om die kaart te gebruik. Knip
dit stukkend, en gebruik voortaan
kontant.
Definisie van n kredietkaart?
Verdubbel jousalaris ineenmaand

Indien jy dit sou kan reg kry om
elke maand net n klein bietjie
meer aan skuld af te betaal, kan
jy die termyn van die lening en
die totale rentebedrag met so-
veel as die helfte verminder.
Die huishoudelike inkomste van
n middelklas gesin in Suid Afrika
is om en by R18 000 per maand n
belasting. Meer as 70% daarvan
word tans gebruik om skuld mee
terug te betaal. Die gemiddelde
Suid Afrikaanse huishouding het
naastenby R60 000 se kredietkaart
skuld, R25 000 se persoonlike le-

minder nie as R1 617 000 se rente.
Dit is verskriklik as jy daaraan
dink.
Indien jy bereid is om n paar
luukshede prys te gee en net R1 000
per maand meer in jou huisver-
band in te betaal, sal die totale ren-
tebedrag betaalbaar nie net na

Cranes dot the sky along the R44 ap-

two new medical facilities proceeds in
full swing in the Heartlands De Beers

The larger of the two facilities is a fully-
fledged acute hospital, which is being devel-

five Ophthalmologists and an Anaesthetist,

Consummate performer James Ma-

justice to the King, his magnetic and en-

the magical moves that Elvis performed
at his peak.
His show From Memphis to Las Vegas
was a runaway success at the Roxy Re-

Elvis Tributes at Grand West, where he
performed to full houses.
The highlight of Maraiss career was
representing South Africa in Wales at

ST BASILS OPENS: Somerset West diners were treated to a variety of mouth watering
dishes on Friday 1 August when St Basils Pizzeria, on 142 Main Road Somerset West,
held their official opening. Owners Hannes de Klerk (second from left) and Jaco de Bruyn
(fourth from left), have worked and owned restaurants in East London such as La Vino
Peroni Wine Bar, Cafe Basil and Canteena Basil for the past 10 years and now look for-
ward to tantalising taste buds in the Helderberg. Hannes said after selling their house in
East London they travelled through the Western Cape tasting different food along the way
deciding what would work for the new pizzeria. They wanted a pizzeria that could cater
for the whole family and decided to add burgers and chips, pastas, salads and desserts.
