Helderberg in shock over double liquidationNIKITA SYLVESTER

FORsomeHelderbergresidents thestart of 2012 was not a time of cele-bration but one of trepidation three well-established businessesin the area have closed their doorsrecently.

Builders Friend in SomersetWest, Lumber City in Strand andRock of Ages in the Gants Centre,Strand, are all names with whichHelderberg residents are familiar.

    The news that these businesses

have gone into liquidation or mayface this fate has shocked the com-munity.

Hundreds of workers face theprospect of unemployment.

Thys Lourens, attorney forBuilders Friend owner JurgensGeldenhuys and Lumber Cityowner Johan Steyl, has confirmedthatbothbusinesseshavegone intoliquidation.

Despite the fact that BuildersFriend has been in existence since1986, the business was compelled to

liquidate on Tuesday 17 January. At this stage my client [Jurgens

Geldenhuys] does not wish to offerfurther comment as it is already ahuge disappointment for everyoneinvolved and affected by this ac-tion, Lourens says.

DistrictMail approached em-ployees of Builders Friend for theircomment on the matter, but theywere reluctant to speak. We wereasked to not divulge anything thatwas said there, so we are going tohonour that, says an employee

who wishes to remain anonymous.Lourens adds that his other cli-

ent, Steyl of Lumber City, is alsoextremely disappointed andwould likewise prefer not to elabo-rate due to the sensitivity of thematter.

Given the present economic sit-uation he had no other option butto liquidate this business on 10 Jan-uary, says Lourens.

Steyl has been the owner of Lum-ber City since 2000.

Rock of Ages was also closed re-

cently. However, owner Chris deBeer could not tell DistrictMailwhether this business had alsobeen liquidated or just temporarilyclosed, beforethepapers timeofgo-ing to print.

A neighbouring business in-formsDistrictMail that, when Rockof Ages closed in December lastyear, they were under the impres-sion that the business had merelyclosed for the holidays, but theyvenoticed that Rock of Ages hasntopened its doors since.

Some dreamsdo come trueFOR more than six years, District-Mail has been campaigningagainst the lack of public trans-port between the Helderberg andStellenbosch.

Ourcommunityhasbeenplead-ing for years for a safe, affordableshuttle service between these twoareas.

This dream will finally becomea reality on Monday.

GoldenArrowBusServiceswilllaunch a new bus route, leavingfrom the Helderberg in the morn-ing and departing from Stellen-bosch in the afternoon.

To each and every individualwho was part of this fight, andwho voiced their need for such aservice this victory is yours.

Now it is up to everyone to sup-port these buses in order for themto become a permanent service, and to be expanded in the future.

Theneed forpublic transport inthe Helderberg, and across thecountry, is still immense.

There are numerous children, elderly citizens and vulnerablemen and women who have to relyon their feet to get to school, work, home. Many have to follow unsaferoutes every day.

As a community and a country,we have a very long way to go tosolve our transport problems.

However, this bus service is astep towards better circum-stances; and for the moment all inneed of it can rejoice.

Praising the protectorsIWASprivilegedenoughtoattendthe annual general meeting of theSomerset West Community Po-lice Forum last week.

The CPF facilitates interactionbetween the people of SomersetWest and our local SAPS branch, and also provides a platform forthe Metro Police and other roleplayers in the safety and securitysector to report back to taxpayersabout their work in our commu-nity.

This interactionhasbeenmadeeasier by the Somerset West sta-tion commander, colonel Mary-Anne Williams, who goes beyondthe call of duty in her service tothe people of Somerset West.

Fromthehardworkthat thepo-lice services and associated agen-cies perform every day, to the ex-tra effort put in during the festiveseason, they deserve our whole-hearted vote of thanks.

I alsowant tomention thegreatwork performed by the reservists

in assisting the SAPS; the manysuccessful neighbourhood watch-esoperatinginSomersetWestwhoprovide an invaluable service inbeing the ears andeyes in the com-munity; the Helderberg CrimeWatch, whichisalwaysreadytogothe extra mile; and everyone elsewho gives up their valuable timeto assist the police services inbuilding the safe community thatwe are lucky enough to live in.

Unfortunately, some membersof thepublicareoftenall tooquickto criticise the sterling efforts ofthese people, and do very little toassist in upholding the law andpublic safety, and instead indulgein finger-pointing.

How many otherwiselaw-abiding citizens dont indulge inbreaking the law every day inways that they think dont mat-ter?This includes illegallysettingoff fireworks at New Year in resi-dential areas, driving after hav-ing had that extra glass of wine,

and speeding when no one is look-ingnot tomention theuseof cell-phones whilst driving, and everyother little way in which the gen-eral public is selective in whatlaws apply to them.

Crime prevention starts withevery single person taking the re-sponsibility not to disobey thelaw, andzero tolerancestartswithourselves.

Accordingly, wemaketheworkof the already-understaffed andoverworked police personnel andsupporting organisations all themore difficult, and we owe thema great vote of thanks for the hardwork they perform. It is time thatall the citizensof our town take re-sponsibility for their own behav-iour, and for ensuring that we allcomply with our social responsi-bilities in sticking within theboundaries of the law.

concept to care Our concept of a specialist dementia and Alzheimers care facility founded on the basis of quality care and hospitality has been well received. Since our launch in September 2011 demand has increased and we welcomed our first residents during November 2011. Over a relatively short period of time an occupancy level of 50% on our single units has been reached, which is a reflection of the demand for a much needed dementia and Alzheimers care solution. This is summarized in the response received from Dorette, daughter of our first resident, Mrs. De Lange when asked

Tragic loss opens AWS debateTODAY my life was turned upsidedown due to heartbreak and disap-pointment.

Her name was Skylah, and shewas only six months old when shewas diagnosed with a disease alsoknown as cat flu.

Three months ago I took her toanimal welfare in Gordons Bay toget vaccinated, and the first thingthey asked me was whether I wasworking; I told them I was not asI had been retrenched in December2010, and only my fianc is workingcurrently.

We live hand-to-mouth and havebeen going to interviews more thenI can count.

They told me that the vaccina-tion alone was R150, which I ofcoursedonthave.Theladygavemede-worming tablets and told me Icould go dip her. I was shocked, asthats the nicest way to say, If youcant pay then you dont get theservice.

On Sunday morning Skylah hadthree epileptic attacks. We immedi-ately rushed her off to HelderbergAnimalWelfare, where thevetgaveher an antibiotic and tablets andtold us to bring her back the nextmorning as he couldnt tell me ex-actly what was wrong with her atthatmoment. In theendmyfiancesemployer had to pay R285, becauseif we hadnt, we wouldnt have beenhelped.

This morning she was taken to

thewelfareagain, onlytobetoldthatshe had picked up some kind of dis-ease known as cat flu and thatshe was bleeding internally, andthey couldnt do anything for her.

Writing this is the hardest thingto do, but someone has to say some-thing because if I hadnt beenturned away three months ago Iwould still have had the most play-ful and cheerful puppy I could haveasked for. I was willing to pay whatI could, which is more then 50%.

    ABIGAIL SSTRAND

    Julia Evans, Helderberg AWSmanager, responds:

This is a sad story, but let mestart from the beginning on how allwelfare clients are treated (withoutexception).

Every single person coming tothe welfare to request vaccinationor medical treatment for their ani-mal is askedabout their income.Asa welfare we are abused by the gen-eral public that can afford a privatevet, so it is crucial for us to knowthat we are assisting true welfarecases. Because of this, the ownerwould have been asked to providean affidavit or proof of income.

And it is this that people take ex-ception to.Many leave inarage,nev-er to return. But if they are true wel-fare cases and do care for their ani-mals,theycanmakethatsmalleffort.

Theinformationiskeptconfidential. The cost of R150 for vaccination

is an exaggeration on this ownerspart. I canguarantee that theownerwould have been told that its R70for the first vaccination (it includesthe de-worming); the second vacci-nation (a month later) is R60, andthe final vaccination is R80.

The R150 may have been quotedfor sterilisation and this is ahuge-ly reduced amount. If the ownercannot afford even that greatly dis-counted price, they should not ownan animal. Animals, like children, cost money, and it is unfair to ex-pect the welfare to support otherpeoples whims. We receive no gov-ernmental subsidies and we allwork extremely hard at raising thenecessary money to keep us going.

The owner would also have beenasked if they intended to breed theanimal. This organisation will notsupport backyard breeders!

If the animal is ill, the owner willbeadvisedtogiveituptothewelfaresothat itcanbetreatedproperlyandthen hopefully rehomed to a familythat can afford proper care.

It is a very sad story regardingthis littlepup, buttheresponsibilityin getting proper care lies with theowner, not the welfare. But pleasebear in mind that the first vaccina-tion is not a guarantee that a puppywont get the dreaded disease. It isa course of vaccinations that pro-vides the proper cover.

Brazen thievery: Val von Blowfrom Golden Acre, SomersetWest, recently took this photo.During the recent holidays thismanhole cover at the HelderzichtRoad entrance to Beaumontschool was stolen, Von Blowwrites. Somewhere there is ascrapmetal dealer without a con-sciencewhoaccepted this, ashehas done with many other man-hole covers in the past. Why arewe so helpless in the face of thisrampant theft?

Soup kitchen suspendedTHE Helderberg Street PeoplesCentre has been operating in SirLowrys Pass Village for somefour years, during which time theDay Care Centre has fed over 200people every day.

The centres committee has, however, taken a decision to sus-pend the operation of the kitch-en pending a review of severalaspects, including: a reassess-ment as to whether we are meet-ing the needs of the most vulner-able in the community; howsuch help can best be rendered;and what administrative proc-esses and procedures can be putin place to ensure accountabili-ty and an effective use of limitedresources. All other activities at

the centre will continue, such asskills training, the delivery offood to the sick in their homes, support for those who are infect-ed or affected by HIV/Aids, aswell as for orphaned and vulner-able children and those whohave come off drugs.

These measures are only appli-cable to Sir Lowrys Pass Villageand will not affect the soupkitchen in Somerset West. Wewould ask for the continued sup-portandprayersof theHelderbergcommunity.

Food for thoughtLegumes: ancientfood, future foodONE of the most dramatic changes on theculinary scene in recent years has been therediscovery of grains and legumes.

Everyday grains wheat, corn, rice areappearing in many new forms, and beans, lentils and chickpeas are growing in popu-larity. Exotic grains such as millet, quinoa, bulgurandbeans thatwereoncerarely seenare now easily available.

Seeds are our most durable and concen-trated foods. Seeds are the structures bywhich plants create a new generation oftheir kind. They contain an embryonicplant together with the food supply to fuelits germination and early growth, and theyhave an outer layer that insulates the em-bryo fromsoilandmicrobes, making it idealto safely store them for future use.

Grains, legumes and nuts form the threemajor categories of seeds.

Legumes have long been an essential andaffordable alternative to protein-rich food. With the price of red meat the primarysource of modern protein constantly esca-lating, and concerns with sustainability, there is a growing tendency to go back tothis ancient food.

Legumes produce seeds that are espe-cially rich in protein, thanks to their symbi-osis with bacteria that live in their roots. This also means that legumes actually en-rich thesoil theygrowin, which iswhyvari-ous legumes have been grown as rotationcrops since Roman times.

A remarkable indication of their statusin the ancient world is the fact that each ofthe four major legumes got their namesfrom prominent Roman families: the FavabeanwasnamedafterFabius, thelentilafterLentulus, while Piso inspired the pea andCicero the chickpea.

Apart from their high protein content, legumes are high in soluble fibre, mineralsand vitamins B and E. They can also reducebad cholesterol and stabilise blood sugarlevels.

Unfortunately, legumes are often misun-derstood and labelled as hard-to-cook, timeconsuming and causing discomfort aftereating. This myth should now be put to restonce and for all.

I hope that the hints, recipes and illustra-tions in this article will inspire you to ex-plore more, and contribute towards happy, healthy cooking sessions in your kitchens.

Hints:) Buy small quantities at a time from a

retailer with a huge turnover, because theycan go rancid if stored for too long at hightemperatures or in humid conditions.) Soak beans overnight and discard the

water. Rinse at least twice during the cook-ing process to ensure that the large sugarswill be broken down and that they will beeasier to digest instead of causing discom-fort after eating them.

Heart failure won't stop CarmenNEARLY losing your life twice before theage of 34 is frightening, but Carmen Han-nies from Somerset West is a survivor whowontstopuntilsheknowswhatit feels liketo live life to the fullest.

Carmens ordeal started when she wasjust two years old and suffered from rheu-matic fever. It was misdiagnosed as flu,and as a result it affected her heart.

A few years ago I became quite de-spondent about being unfit, so I joined thegym and began to exercise quite inten-sely, recalls Carmen. But the more I ex-ercised, the sicker I got. Then one nightI woke up and I couldnt breathe. I wentto the hospital emergency room, wherethey realised I was suffering from heartfailure, and underwent open-heart sur-gery to save my life.

After four months of recovery, she wastoldshecouldstartexercisingagain.How-ever, due to complicationswith theopera-tion, she then suffered a stroke.

Once my doctor gave me the go aheadto start exercising again, I made the deci-sion to join Adventure Boot Camp. Theirprogramme was perfect as it allowed me

to work at my own pace, outdoors, underthe guidance of a personal trainer. Itchanged my life.

Carmen says her overall health hasmade a turn for the better, and being out-

doors with the other supportive women

in the programme is just what she needed.Nearly losing my life twice is very scary, and I thank God every day for showing methere is a way to live life to the fullest de-spite any challenges thrown my way.

Firing the myths: Suffering, according to Bruce Rellys2nd Fire, is not sent to test our submissiveness, but na-tures inducement for us to engage more consciously andjoyously with life. This book offers an unsentimental ap-proach to suffering: in it the author rearranges medicalpriorities tomatchnatures ancient, even-handed, logicaland essentially simple formula for spiritual growth andthe healing that goes with it. The main challenge is tofully realise that we are individually responsible for all ourpast, present and future experiences. To achieve this em-powerment, however, we need to abolish a number of per-sistent superstitions or misconceptions we have regard-ing pain, relationships and personal destiny. The reliefof suffering will become general when practitioners andeducators can bring to the metaphysical laws of healingthe same level of understanding that science has alreadybrought to the laws of physics and chemistry. ) BruceRelly grew up on Waterkloof Farm, Somerset West.
