“My man sou hom doodmaak as hy weer die Maandagoggend daar was,” sê sy.

    Volgens winkelassistent Alida

sy verder ondersoek instel en die

    bestaande alarmstelsel, ook die

dat die inbrekers oor die vloer ge-

kruip het nadat hulle deur die

    muur geklim het.

Hy sluk egter swaar aan di pil

    Kloktoring van

    NGkerkgesloop

    ILLANA FRANTZ

    Die kloktoring van die NG

    KerkStrand-Noord inBrand-

    straat het Dinsdag vir die

    laaste keer gelui.

    Planne om die bekende ba-

ken, wat in 1952 opgerig is, te

    sloop het gister n werklikheid

    geword.

Die besluit om die toring te

verwyder is die gevolg van n

sterk wind wat die boonste ge-

deelte van die toring in Februa-

rie vanjaar afgeruk het. Dit het

op die kerk se dak beland en

    groot skade aangerig.

Die toring, wat sowat 32 m

hoog is en sowat 70 ton weeg, se

klok is Dinsdag vir 10 minute

    aaneen gelui.

    Volgens die kerk se skriba,

    CominePienaar,wasdiebesluit

om van die toring ontslae te

raak, nie n maklike een nie.

    N die skade in Februarie

    het die kerkraad n ingenieur

    geraadpleeg. Hy het bevind dat

om die toring te herstel nie fi-

    nansieel sinvol sou wees nie.

    Pienaarhetbygevoegdatdaar

mense is wat hartseer is om die

toring te verloor, maar dat die

    veiligheidsrisiko wat daarmee

    gepaardgaan, swaarderweegas

    die sentimentele waarde.

Na verneem word sal die to-

    ring in drie seksies afgebreek

    word.

Pienaar het ges dat daar nog

nie besluit is wat met die klok

van die toring gaan gebeur nie,

maar daar is sprake dat dit op

die een of ander manier steeds

    behoue sal bly.

    Burglars tactics revealedonvideo

    DELIAH BRINKHUIS

A burglar who broke into the

    Star Express courier company

    in Gants Centre on Tuesday

    made off with a computer.

    According to owner Ettienne

Lezar this is the second break-in

his business had suffered in two

    months. In May two computers

    were stolen.

He could, however, on a previ-

ous occasion stop men who were

about to remove and steal batter-

    ies fromthecompanys trucks that

were parked in front of the office.

In the most recent incident ac-

    cesswasgainedbyremovingaside

    window and the burglar bars.

    On video footage that Lezar

    showed DistrictMail, a flash light

is shone into the security camera

at about 01:45, followed by a slim

    man, wearing white skinny jeans

    and a light-grey hoody jacket,

    climbing through a side window.

The burglar bars are placed on the

inside of the office floor from be-

    hind the blinds. The intruder

moves straight to his right where

    he takesa laptopbefore exiting the

building from where he had en-

    tered.

    Last week the DistrictMail also

reported on a break-in at another

    Gants Centre business, Global

    Screenprinters, where computer

    equipment was also stolen.

    in the shops window.

    Paulsen says there were also

five pairs of earrings on the

    stand.

    Bevigilant ondustbinday

I would like to register a word of

    caution to Helderberg residents

who put their wheelie bins out on

    a dark winters morning before

    setting off for work.

    My husband opened our elec-

tronic gates and wheeled out the

dustbin at 07:10 on the prescribed

day, then went back to the garage

    which is approximately three me-

tres away, to fetch the recycling

    bag.

At that point he was attacked

    and mugged, blindfolded, gagged,

thrown onto the floor, dragged in-

side and his hands and feet were

    tied up by two assailants.

    After 40minutes of selective pil-

fering, the thieves left by foot, let-

ting themselves out with the keys

to our home and the remote.

    Remarkably my husband was

    shaken but unhurt. Our security

    response and the police arrived

    within moments of being called,

    followedshortlybya traumacoun-

    sellor.

We were very impressed by eve-

    ryones efficiency and compas-

sion, and a security guard was

    posted outside until a locksmith

had changed the locks and remote

    frequencies.

We are living in very challeng-

ing times and there is a great need

to be extra vigilant about our secu-

    rity and safety.

OnMonday 15 July I had an emer-

Vergelegen and I can only heap

    praise on the exceptional treat-

    ment I received from admissions,

the nursing staff inWardG and es-

Six years ago I had three opera-

    traumatised. The doctors and staff

were sympathetic to my last expe-

    riencemincredible in their under-

    standing and in quellingmy fears.

Just before the operation I told

the surgeon, Dr Beyers and anaes-

confidence in them, but as the fol-

lowing day was my birthday and

the next morning I expected them

The next day they were there

with good news that all had gone

    well.Unfortunately they said their

talents lay elsewhere, not in sing-

ing but they had come to wish me

    well on my birthday.

The ward staff then came in to

give me a slice of lemon meringue

pie with a candle to celebrate my

    birthday.Sixyears later Imust say

the food has improved and it was

a pleasure at every meal to enjoy

the fare that helped me recover.

To Dr Beyers and Dr Keet plus

    Dierevergiftiger, neemgerusvan joueiemedisyne

    Mia.

erge hart kloppings begin kry, verward

    raakenstelselmatigbeginverlamraak.

dier nie in die geval my kat Mia.

Nou wil ek by u weet, skinder diere van

n mens? Beswadder hul n mens? Steel hul-

    le, pleeg hulle bedrog?

    Alhierdiegedrag isdeelvandiemensdom

Indien n dier so nwrewel in jou binneste

wakker maak dat jy hom moet vergiftig,

gaan sien die eienaar en tree soos n be-

    skaafde, welopgevoede mens op!

Wanneer n kat of hond u eiendom betree

en n brief in jou tuin los, vra die eienaar

omdit te komskoonmaak. Spuit die dier nat

met n tuinslang. Kry Citronella-olie, ver-

    loos!

Meneer of Mevrou, ek vertrou julle sal n

rustige nagrus h aangesien julle in jul doel

    Please sort outwaterproblem inGordonsBay

    Firstly, Iwould like to thankJohanMiddleton

for helping to sort out the walkway problem

in Gordons Bay - 10 out of 10, and the thanks

of all who use the walkway along the beach

    front.

One oversight - the steps across the water-

fall drain is not wheelchair-friendly, but I

    suppose we should be grateful.

Again we have a problem, but this time a

health risk to all Gordons Bay residents.

For the last month or two, from the start of

the rainy season, the water quality has gone

from bad to atrocious and is totally undrink-

able thats if you dont mind drinking water

that tastes like Bexadust or heavy chlorine

(which I am sure is just to cover the Bexadust

    smell and taste).

I sayBexadust, because it is thesmell Iknow

    fromdustingroses this couldbeanother type

of chemical that is used on apple trees or the

    like.

Even showering or bathing in this water is

probably a danger, especially to the aged and

    the young.

A lot of people are getting sick with diar-

rhoea, intestinal worms, unusually very bad

headaches and the only difference to the peo-

ples day to day lives and diets is the water

    quality.

This could land up getting far worse. As to

our knowledge, no one has yet died, but then

we dont really know, do we?

My call to the powers that be is this: please

    get this problemsortedout asquicklyaspossi-

ble. No other area has been affected as badly

as ours (again not that we are aware of) and

it seems to me that there is a lack of control

at the water works and they seem unable (or

unwilling) to sort the problem out.

Please let us not get as bad as Gauteng or

    theLimpopoProvinceas farasbadwaterqual-

ity is concerned. We really dont need this to

    add to our problems.

I amapensioner and I amspending approxi-

mately R10 to R15 a day for clean drinkingwa-

ter from Spar (they are smiling though).

The government does not payme enough to

buy water to drink which I should be getting

from my tap. This is not right. I am not the

    only one moaning, believe me.

doing one project as a school, it was decided to spread the circle of

caring wider. Each Beaumont family was asked to do something for

67 minutes on the day after school and pupils shared in class what

they had done; from visiting the old age home, helping at the SPCA,
