    ALIGHT: Fire fighters

    were called to a

    Beach Road, Strand on

    Sunday morning.

    According to Theo

    Layne, spokesperson

    for the City of Cape

    Services, the minor

    blaze, suspected to

    have been caused by a

    DistrictMail survey runby imposters?

The DistrictMail has become aware of a

neatly dressed man, posing as one of our

employees who claims to do a survey on

    our behalf.

Last week the DistrictMail received two

calls from two different readers, enquiring

about a survey that is currently being con-

    ducted.

According to the resident from Gordons

Bay, who wishes to remain anonymous, they

received a visit from aDistrictMail employee

wanting to conduct a surveyat 16:30 lastweek

Tuesday. He was very well dressed, stockily

built and very well spoken. He said he was

representing the DistrictMail and wanted to

ask us a few questions on their behalf.

The resident says the questions started off

    with the reading material in the newspaper;

which articles they read and which articles

they found more interesting. However, the

questions soon drifted to their shopping hab-

its as well as how many people live in the

    houseandthatswhenthewarningbellsstart-

ed going off. I phoned the DistrictMail, but

couldnt get through. My husband asked him

why he wasnt filling this in on an official

questionnaire as he was only writing the an-

swers in a diary. After a while my husband

    becameagitatedwith thequestionsandasked

him to leave, said the woman.

The next day she asked her neighbours if

they had also received such a visit, but none

of them had. She added that she informed the

local Neighbourhood Watch about the inci-

    dent.

    ThesecondincidenthappenedonThursday

(13 June) when a Strand residents doorbell

rang at 15:00. A man, wearing blue jeans and

a blue check shirt, said he was an employee

of the newspaper and he wanted to ask her

    about her reading habits.

He first started askingme about the news-

paper, but then he moved on to other ques-

    tions likewhenandwheredo Ibuymygrocer-

ies. He also asked where I buy my furniture

and thats when I became suspicious, said

the resident. She then indicated to the man

    thatshehadtogosomewhereso thathewould

    have to leave.

    Thewomanphoned theDistrictMails offic-

es as she felt uneasy after the visits. I then

phoned the police as well and ADT who said

they would be on the look out for him.

Mark Stuart, editor of the DistrictMail,

warned people not to fall prey to this scam,

because it is possible that someone might

want to exploit this situation. The District-

Mail in conjunction with Ask Africa are con-

    ductingareadersurveytogainabetterunder-

    A little warmth given

In an attempt to ease the hardship which goes

along with living on the streets and help keep

the winter chill away, the Helderberg Street

Peoples Centre distributed blankets to the

    homeless on Tuesday 11 June.

    Alongwith the250blanketswhichwerehand-

ed out at the soup kitchen situated in Victoria

Street, those who benefited were also treated

to a delicious warm chicken curry.

Seen here is Ian Greer, chairman of the Hel-

derberg Street Peoples Centre, with some of

the homeless people who enjoyed the much

    needed meal offered to them.

Although many may welcome the re-

    curringdownpour,othersaredreading

the sound of rain as for some it means

slow business, flooded homes and not

being able to go to work.

As the winter season rolls by each year,

Helderberg residents say they continue to

    experience the sameproblemswith regard

to flooding and blocked drainage systems.

    Lourens Snyman, director at Cronlec

Electrical Wholesalers in the Gants Cen-

tre, Strand said each time it rains, the en-

tire roadwayin frontof theiroffices is com-

    pletely submerged by water.

We suspect that a stormwater pipe be-

low our pavement is broken and that rub-

ble has now fallen into it, which may be

    causing a blockage and flooding.

    I cannotbegin to counthowmany times

    weve contacted themunicipality sincewe

moved into this premises two years ago.

Thus far nothinghas beendone, said Sny-

    man.

Some of the motorists making use of that

part of Mynhardt Street opted for a detour

out of fear that the high water levels may

    damage their vehicles.

    Another Strand resident, Davedine Lan-

geveld said she too has been experiencing

    recurring problems with heavy rains.

The water is several centimetres away

    frommydoorandabout to entermyhouse.

Langeveld said that they have to sweep the

sewerage water down the street in heavy

    downpours.

The waste comes up in our back yard.

This is a constant problem and it is really

sickening, we have children and animals at

    home, said Langeveld.

    Shesaidthat theyhavecontactedtheCity

on numerous occasions but the problem

    continues to occur.

Last year this time we called them (the

City) and they only pitched the next morn-

    ing after 11:00, explained Langeveld.

DistrictMail contacted the City of Cape

Towns media office for comment on these

issues, but by the time of going to print, a

response had not yet been forthcoming.

Feedback from the City regarding this

matter will be published as soon as it is re-

    ceived.

Any flooding, blocked drains and service

disruptions in the Helderberg area can be

reported to the Citys Customer Contact

Use theFreeCall lines to call theCityofCapeTown

The City of Cape Town recently deployed 70

FreeCall lines across different areas that al-

low users to dial directly to the Citys call

    centre.

These lines can be utilised to contact the

City for different queries and service re-

quests such as illegal dumping, sewer block-

    ages and refuse collection.

The FreeCall lines were launched on

Thursday (6 June) at the Sir Lowrys Pass

    library.

Theyhave also been installed in theLwan-

dle housing/cash office, the Strand munici-

pal offices, Macassar housing office, Somer-

setWest municipal offices, Sir Lowrys Pass

library and Gordons Bay traffic offices.

    According to alderman Demetri Qually,

    Maycomember for Corporate Services, City

of Cape Town, the call centre can be contact-

ed as follows: The corporate call centre is

    available from07:0021:00, and thewaterand

    electricity technical operations centres are

available on a 24-hour basis. These call cen-

tres can be reached by selecting either op-

tion 2 or 3 on the FreeCall lines.

The FreeCall lines dial directly to the call

centre and a number does not need to be di-

    alled.

From a mobile phone or a land line, the

number to dial is 0860 103 089. Normal call

rates apply when dialling from mobile

    phones and land lines.

For water queries, SMS 31373 or 31220.

    Normal SMS rates apply.

Call centre agents will respond to custom-

er queries that are received from the Free-

    Call lines.

In the event that further action is re-

quired, the complaint or request will be

logged by means of a service request.

Customers will be provided with a refer-

    ence number for follow-up purposes.

Response times depend on the type of serv-

    ice request, says Qually.

We strive to resolve every complaint

within 14working days, with resource prob-

    lems suchaswater and electricity dealtwith

    as soon as possible.

The purpose of the FreeCall lines is to

improve service delivery by increasing ac-

cess to the Citys Call Centre, says alder-

    man Qually.

Im writing this letter with con-

I walk along the paved pathway

along the beach, under the milk

wood trees, every morning on my

    way to work.

It is upsetting to see how this ar-

ea has degraded due to lack of

    maintenance and upkeep.

The brick paving has sagged in

areas and the slightest bit of rain

creates pools of mud. The little

bridge next to the ablutions is fall-

ing apart and is anOHS risk to the

    municipality.

Many of the lights under the

milk wood trees are not working

    and their electricalwires exposed.

This is nothing but an invite for

a copper thief to come cut and re-

    Not only is he physically

    Although all Oratorios

    current Grade 1 winners are

    based in countries around

    theworld, his offspring in ac-

One of the drawbacks of being an as-

set manager is that there seems to be

    an inherentassumptionby thoseout-

side of the industry that we should

be able to determine which stocks

are going to goup over thenextweek,

    month and year.

    Whilst this assumption may be

    misguided, our inability to predict

    short-term stock price movements

not only disappoints, but is often rid-

    iculed when people who follow

stocks for a hobby, seem to be getting

    all their calls right.

    Portfolio managers fully acknowl-

edge their inability to time the mar-

ket on a sustainable basis or predict

the path of near-term share prices.

We think that focusing all of our

    attention on determining what we

think a stock is really worth, and ig-

noring what the herd thinks, is a

proven recipe for good long-term re-

turns. This means that we often sell

    good companies because we think

the share is overpriced, not because

    it is a bad company.

Investing on the basis of share

    price momentum is a

    strategy that some in-

    vestment managers have

    employed very effective-

    ly and winning stocks

    can outperform for a lot

    longer than one would

    think. This is partly be-

    cause an increasing

    stock price not only has

    the effect of reinforcing

    the confidence of those

    that own the stock that

    their thesis is appropri-

    ate, but it also attracts

    new investors who are

drawn to a rising share price.

    We unreservedly believe in the

ability of equities to grow ones

wealth over time; it is our view that

    few investments can compound your

savings over the long-run like awell-

selected stock. As long as you avoid

    overpaying, investing in good

    businesses, like Sasol, SAB,

    Naspers and BAT, with their

    strong management teams, can

be a surprisingly simple and re-

    warding endeavour.

    While disciplined DIY

    investors can do surpris-

    ingly well and stock-

picking can be a very sat-

    isfying hobby, there are

    a number of common

    mistakes that we all

    make. Whilst we always

    recommend making use

    of the services of quali-

    fied and experienced fi-

    nancial advisors and in-

    vestment professionals

    to protect and grow your

    savings, we laud anyone

who makes the effort to involve

    themselves in their investments.

However, there are pitfalls which of-

ten ensnare the novice and not focus-

ing enough on these can lead to some

    very expensive lessons.

DIY investorsmust be aware of pitfalls
