Highlights of the 2013-2014 International Theme:Follow Your Dream

During 2013-2014, Lions are challenged to follow theirdream to reach new heights. As we strive to achieveour dreams, we need responsible leaders who providetimely feedback, share accountability and work inteams. As we work in teams, we should also provideimmediate and expanded recognition of results orcontributions. Our overall dream as an organization isto serve those in need in every community in theworld. To achieve this dream, we must expand ourreach by strengthening existing clubs, adding newclubs, and recruiting new members.

Service. It’s More Than a Dream, It’s Our Identity AsLions, we are a global network dedicated to serviceand we share the dream of a world without suffering.Last year we provided over 500 million hours ofservice with a direct impact on over 200 million people.

We will continue to strive toward our dream bysupporting the following service strategies:Participate in the Global Service Action Campaigns ofengaging youth (August), working with the blind andvisually impaired (October), feeding the hungry(December and January), and protecting ourenvironment (April)

Support the initiative to reduce global povertyContinue involvement in tree planting and the ReadingAction ProgramSponsor a Friends and Family activity or serviceproject in April to introduce your family, friends andneighbours to your Lions club.

Success through TeamworkDistrict governors are the leaders of the districtgovernor teams, however good leaders know the valueof working together. In addition to the leadership team, the District Governor is part of the district GlobalLeadership Team (GLT) and the district GlobalMembership Team (GMT). Sharing your district dreamor vision with all of your team members will be the keyto achieving success.

We will activate our dreams by involving the districtteam in the following ways:

Delegate some club visits to the 1st or 2nd vice districtgovernors so the District Governor will have more timeto focus on overall priorities and achieving the districtgoals.

Challenge the district GLT to implement the districtleadership development planChallenge the district GMT to implement the districtmembership development planEncourage the zone and region chairpersons tomotivate club officers to achieve club excellence andachieve net growth in membershipProvide opportunities for team members to developskills and increase their confidenceDevelop future district leaders by encouragingparticipation in Lions Leadership InstitutesEncourage all district leaders to utilize the web baseddevelopment resources in the Leadership ResourceCentre

Responsibility, Recognition and ReachAs Lions we have a strong sense of awareness of theneeds of others and a sense of responsibility to makeour communities better. We know that responsibilitymeans taking care of others, being accountable andbeing trustworthy. Responsibility also meansownership: owning what needs to be done, thenfinding a way to get it done. It involves taking risks andworking hard. We must also let other Lions beresponsible for their own challenges and their owndreams. To encourage them to achieve their dreams,we should provide recognition of their achievements.

Recognition, both informal and formal, is deeply rootedin Lions heritage and tradition, and is a key componentof member satisfaction.

To provide expanded recognition we will:Record district zone and region chairpersons with LCIShare information about the Presidential RegionChairperson Award and the Presidential ZoneChairperson AwardEncourage clubs to achieve the Club ExcellenceAwardShare the details of how to earn the Dream AchieverAwardsStrive to earn the District Governor Team ExcellenceAwardProvide timely and regular informal recognition as yourteam achieves your district goalsEncourage clubs to create their own awards forindividual club members who have outstandingachievements – don’t forget the “unsung hero”

Reach Member satisfaction is key to the ability toretain our members, and key to expanding our servicecapacity and global reach.

To expand and engage our membership we will:Implement the Club Excellence Process (CEP) toimprove club atmosphere and select meaningfulservice activities by using two resources; theCommunity Needs Assessment and the How Are YourRatings survey.

Cairns Lions Recycling for Overseas Communities

For the past 12 months 5 Cairns Clubs have beenbusy collecting used hospital equipment from theCairns, Mareeba and Babinda hospitals due to theirrefurbishment program. The clubs involved were theCairns Trinity Bay, Barrier Reef, Trinity Beach,Gordonvale and the Cairns Business. Each piece ofequipment had a Lion logo attached when it waspackaged for transport.

Lion Garry Davey from the Barrier Reef Lionsorganised 4 transport companies to take the shrinkwrapped packages to LARC. LARC is a non profitcentre run under the guidance of Apple MAQ LionsClub (Brisbane) which has been providing health andeducation services at a domestic and internationallevel since 1993. The items have helped communitiesthroughout Tonga, PNG, Sri Lanka, Bali, Ghana, andIndia to name a few; they also helped QueenslandLions during the Larry and Yasi cyclones whichaffected our district.

These transport companies involved took theequipment from Cairns to Brisbane free of charge, without this generosity shown to Lions it would nothave happened. These transport companies alongwith their Cairns Managers were presented with aLions Certificate of Appreciation at an informal thankyou bbq recently. This project has produced a total ofover 600 ton of hospital equipment bound for overseasand several service hours for Lions involved with thisworthwhile project

“We removed 30 trees from the Miller River thatcollapsed as part of a massive Nor’easter storm when26 inches of heavy wet snow piled up on the leavesthat had not yet fallen off the trees,” says Keith Kent.

“The end result was a disaster of downed trees andlimbs in the region that created significant safetyhazards for both civilians and emergency servicesalike.” “We work diligently to provide safety to localpaddlers and nature lovers,” says Kent. “Manybeavers, eagles, hawks, blue herons, deer, bobcatsand more are just as critical to the river as the river isfor them for their survival.”

Lions Responding to Oklahoma Destruction

The USA is no stranger to the damage caused bytornadoes at this time of year. Earlier in May Texasexperienced 10 tornadoes on the same day and asmany as 28 tornadoes were reported in the days priorin Oklahoma, Kansas, Illinois and Iowa. However thislatest tornado came with little warning, winds over300km/hr devastating a 2 mile wide corridor through adensely populated city of Moore, Oklahoma.

In its path were 2 elementary schools, many housesand a medical centre that were destroyed or severelydamaged. Over the past two days searchers havebeen pulling trapped people out from the rubble;unfortunately lives have been lost including childrenfrom the schools.

LCIF is supporting the several thousand Lions who livein eastern Oklahoma, including the Lions of the localMoore Evening Lions Club who are celebrating 46years of service to their local community. Right now,LCIF is sending a Major Catastrophe Grant of$100,000 to assist the Lions with their relief efforts andhelp those in need with food, water, clothing andmedical supplies.

LCIF is also providing emergency grants to help withrelief efforts in other parts of the USA and elsewhere inthe world such as India following floods and Ugandaafter landslides.

Yes, the USA like Australia is considered a richcountry, but in times of need Lions stand tallsupporting our family. Their efforts will take manymonths and the local Lions will be there as membersof the community for the long term reconstruction.

If your Club wishes to help please send your cheque inAustralian Dollars made out to“LCI / LCIF Disaster Relief” to your District CabinetTreasurer.

I will keep you updated as needs are more fully known, now and for as long as it takes.

Thank you

Instead of asking for cash, Lions asked pet storepatrons to buy dog food, supplies and tools anddeposit them in a shopping cart. In six hours close toUS$2,000 in goods was donated. The guide dogschool in Miskolc supported by the clubs trains half ofall guide dogs in Hungary.

The additional Lions’ support was especially welcomebecause the government decided to no longer fund theschool, and the wait time for a new guide dog hasincreased to 2½ years. The all-male Miskolc LionsClub has 28 members, and the all-female MiskolciDeborah Lions Club has 12.

Peter Koleszar, secretary of the Miskolc club, says hewas “infected with the Lions-fever by my father.” Hisfather, Lajos, and other Lions helped protect the cityagainst flooding years ago. That memory helpedprompt him to join. “I realized I have to remember the‘We Serve’ family,” says Koleszar, 40, a high-techentrepreneur whose wife, Helga, also is a Lion.
