Editor’s Letter

When I began brain storming for the December Issue, I knew I wanted it to be big, possibly the biggest issue we have had. I knew I wanted an amazing cover girl and that we would be doing another LookBook. But I had no idea it would be this good. Our cover girl turned out to be Carly Heitlinger of The College Prepster, a blog that I have read for years. The blog is turning six years old this December and she gives District some insight into how it got started and some of her favorite holiday things. Our holiday LookBook is filled with ideas of what to wear to parties, dinners, or whatever you may have on your social calendar come this December. Our models are from the University of Texas at Austin and were awesome to work with. District’s pages also include gift guides for every important person in your life, an op-ed on why December is the most magical time of year, and the classic holiday movies/songs we all love. December marks Lady Bird Johnson’s 102nd birthday, so check out our feature on her and the guide to surviving Christmas with the in-laws. As always, remember to follow us on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, Pinterest, and that District is “your right to a beautiful life.” Keep It Beautiful,

Music

Sucker // Charli XCXIf you want to have an upbeat day, or just need to wake up in general, this is the album for you. She is one of the big-gest upcoming stars in the music world and it is obvious why. Also, in her “London Queen” song she mentions JFK, so there is that.

The Dream Walker // Angels & AirwavesBeing completely honest, we had no idea who this group was either, but we are super into them now! The songs have good beats and their voices are nice. The music feels real, not overly edited. And the songs have overall nice messages.

1989 // Taylor SwiftAnd we are still obsess-ing over this album. It has been playing on repeat for all of us! The “Blank Space” music video sla us as well. “Style” and “Welcome to New York” are two of our favorites, and there is the classic “Shake It Off.”

In the White House she was the

first to have her own Press Secretary and launched a capitol beautification program. She went on the first solo whistlestop tour as the First Lady.

She graduated from UT with a Bachelor of Arts degree

with honors in 1933 and in 1934 a second bach-elor’s degree in journalism Cum Laude in 1934. She was active in the Orange Jackets.

She pur-chased KTBC, an

Austin radio sta-tion, and KTBC-TV/7, an Austin TV station against Lyndon’s wishes. This business investment later made them million-aires.

Her favorite col-ors were coral and navy.

Got her nick-name from her nurse, Alice Tittle, who said

she was as “purty as a lady-bird.” Her father and siblings called her Lady and Lyndon called her Bird. Bird was used on their marriage license.

Lady Bird grew to love the out-doors by

growing up in the tall pines and bayous of East Texas and watching the wildflow-ers bloom each spring.

She gradu-ated from high school, third in

her class, at the age of 15. She had been driv-ing herself to school, a distance of 15 miles each way.

She let her grades slip her senior year so she would

not have to give the valedicto-rian or salutorian speech.

A friend was going to the Uni-versity of

Texas at Austin so Lady Bird chartered a plane to Austin and fell in love with the city and blue-bonnets.

LBJ took Lady Bird on their first date to breakfast at the Driskill Ho-

tel in downtown Austin. He proposed to her on a drive in the country that morning. She accepted his proposal 10 weeks later & they were married on November 17, 1934.

11 Things You Didn’t Know About...Lady Bird Johnson is a legacy. Her courageous efforts to make the world a more beautiful place led her to perfecting the Capitol grounds and founding her own wildflower center. As First Lady she made the role into something that was respected. She had her own chief of staff and her own projects that did not just involve choosing China patterns. It would be Lady Bird’s 102nd birthday December 22nd, so check out the facts below to celebrate “Bird’s” lifelong pursuits.

To finance Lyndon’s political career she

invested $10,000 into his first campaing. When he joined the Navy she ran his congressional office.

Being HerselfPreppy New Yorker Carly

Heitlinger has been blogging for years. She

has turned her blog, which she started at

Georgetown University, into an impressive business.

She loves nail polish, her dog Teddy, and is an avid reader. District

caught up with Carly in the midst of celebrating The

College Prepster ’s six year anniversary. We talked

Paris, the holidays, family, her homestate of Florida

and so much more.

How did you get started blogging?

I had all these dreams about what college would be like... but it end-ed up not quite working out that way for me. I hadn’t really been away from home or my family and I realized that I never had to really study in high school like I had to in college. It was really challenging on all fronts: making friends, being homesick, learning how to study, etc. Throughout the semester, things got worse (really bad grades) and then better (sort of figuring things out). While studying for fi-nals, someone in my dorm suggest-ed that I start a blog, half-jokingly. At the time, I didn’t really “get” blogs, but I went home and started “College Prep” during Christmas break. Best. Decision. Ever.

What is your favorite thing about the December/holiday season?Getting to spend time with my family! Because I live far away from everyone (my sister lives down the street from my parents), getting to spend time with them is something I really cherish. Even just getting to sit down and have dinner at the table like we did when I lived at home makes me happy!

Even though I’m not the biggest fan of the cold (#FloridaGirl), NYC looks incredible during December. The decorations, the wreathes and garland, and the lights (oh! the lights!).

What is The College Prepster all about?

The College Prepster started as a creative outlet while I was a freshman at Georgetown University. Now, it still serves as a creative outlet... and it’s my (dream) job. I write The College Prepster as something I would personally want to read myself!

How long did it take for your blog to take off?Years!!! I would say that after a year and a half things slowly picked up a bit. Then it was just more steady growth. There was never one moment where things seriously took off. It was more hard and consistent work that ended up paying off. Blogging every day, creating better content, and writing about the highs and lows definitely helped The College Prep-ster stand out.

Where in the world would you love to do a photoshoot?Paris... as cliche as it sounds, I would just die for the chance to go to Paris!

What is your favorite thing to eat during the holidays?Anything with sugar, all the desserts.

What are you dying to get this holiday season?I’m really not asking for any-thing; I feel like I have ev-erything I could ever want or need. BUT, I’ve been hav-ing the best time picking out presents for my friends and family!

What event are you most looking forward to this December? There are some fun parties coming up. I love having an excuse to break out my holi-day party shoes.

What are some of your favorite fashion brands? For everyday clothes, I love J. Crew. For fun, special occa-sion dresses and accessories, Kate Spade can do no wrong.

What are your favorite places in NYC?Central Park, for sure. Especially with Teddy, I love living down the street from the park. It’s gorgeous and the perfect place to take a break from all the concrete. (I also love watching tourists and residents en-joy the park together.)

Are you working on any exciting projects? There are always fun things in the works! ;-)

What do you want to do in the future with your blog/brand? This is something I think about of-ten. Right now, I’m balancing build-ing out The College Prepster in a scalable way, beyond social media and also figuring out what I want to do as just me (aka Carly). It’s been one of the more challenging and more exciting steps since starting my blog.

How can we all be more like The College Prepster?I think the real trick to being like The College Prepster is actually re-ally embracing who you are as an individual!

Do you have any travel plans coming up?Flying home to Florida!

39

Parties are always a highlight of the holiday season, but finding the perfect outfit to wear can be difficult. Add in the fact that it’s a office party where you defi-nitely want to impress, and things get even more stressful. We all know the feeling of standing in front of your closet, think-ing you’ve got absolutely nothing to wear. Whether your office party is dressy or casual, we’re here to help. If it’s a dressier occasion, you can’t go wrong with the classic little black dress. To make the look a little more fun and to really impress, we suggest adding a pop of color with bold red pumps. You can also get away with wearing the same dress to multiple parties simply by changing up the accessories a bit. Wear it once with a great statement necklace, and then again with a sweater or fun belt around the waist. If you’re office is more on the casual side, try a basic sweater + oxford combo with a twist. A sweater with jeweled detail-ing adds some pretty sparkle and doubles as a statement necklace. Again, adding in a pop of color with red ballet flats make the look a little more interesting. You can also repeat this sweater to a family party or dinner, and compliments are pretty much guaranteed. Clothes info on pages 52 and 53.

This Clarisonic set is a great value, and will make your mom feel like she’s at a spa every time she washes her face. 3. Of all the gifts you’ll buy this season, treating your mom to something nice is especially important. However, with so many choices, finding the per-fect present can seem a little daunting. If you’re completely stumped on what to get, we’re here to help! Check out our best picks for moms:

I love Christmas. Opening presents, drinking hot chocolate, baking cookies Christmas is one of the most magical holidays. One of my absolute favorite things about the holiday however, are the movies. When ABC Family started the 25 days of Christmas when I was a child I became instantly obsessed with holiday music and films. Not just Christ but everything from Kwanza to Hanukkah. So here it is a list of my favorite holiday songs and movies for you to enjoy!

Compiled by, Ash-

ley of Twe1ve2

The Classics:Christmas

I mentioned how I loved the 25 days of Christmas on ABC Family right? Well the reason is because of all of the different stop motion mov-ies. Rudolph, Frosty, Santa Clause is coming to town. All of them are amazing and I just can’t help but watch them every year.

Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer

A Charlie Brown ChristmasNothing says the holidays are here more than a holiday movie from Charlie Brown. They’re films that you can watch over and over with your family.

ElfElf revived any Christ-mas spirit that I might had been losing when it came out. Plus Zooey Deschanel is in it, Will Ferrell, and holi-day cheer. If you’re not in the Christmas spirit yet watch this and I’m sure you’ll be in it in no time!

Bad Santa

The Nutcracker Prince

How The Grinch Stole Christ-mas

This is definitely not a family friendly movie but nevertheless one of my favor-ite Christmas films. If you can get past the bad language and laugh at how funny the film really is then this holiday movie will surely be a treat.

Not the live action one but the ani-mated one. Where they don’t try and give you a background on the Grinch but instead you watched his heart grow and grow and you melted. Yup, that one. It’s prefect.

Hardly anyone has seen the Nut-cracker Prince but it still remains my favorite Christmas film of all time. It takes a classic tale (The Nut-cracker) and adds a slight twist to it allowing it be watched by children and adults of all ages. Too bad this film is rather hard to find.

Page 45: District December

Playlist1. All I want for Christmas –Mariah CareyOverall Mariah Carey’s Christmas album might be the best Christmas album

to ever be released. 2. Last Christmas –Wham!3. Happy X-mas (War is over) –Celine Dion It’s Celine…do I really need to say anything else. 4. My only wish (This year) –Britney Spears5. Have yourself a merry little Christmas –Christina Aguilera Christina Aguilera has always had the voice of an angel and this song showcases that extremely well! . 6. Let it snow- Boyz II Men7. This Christmas- Chris Brown

Chris Brown’s version of this song is too perfect for words no wonder it is still played every holiday season since it’s release. 8. Christmas Tree-

Lady Gaga9. Blue Christmas- Michael Buble As soon as Michael started singing my heart started melting and I knew that it was going to be an amazing Christmas. His voice does that to people.10. Santa Baby- Eartha Kitt

A ChristmasStory

Adam Sandler’s Eight Crazy Nights

The Polar Express

Muppets Christmas Carol

Spawning millions of T-shirts, quotes, and holiday laughs. A Christmas story marathons on T.V. or on your own are necessary for every holiday season. Which is mainly why I love it so much. It brings the family together.

I love the Muppets and this film definitely adds to my list of reasons why I love them. They’ve taken clas-sic stories and made them enjoyable for ages.

Anytime Tom Hanks is in a film you know it’s going to be amazing but that’s just not why this was amazing. Yes, Tom Hanks was per-fect but so was the anima-tion and the story line. The Polar Express isn’t just a children’s movie. It is Christmas.

While this is animated this is more geared towards an older audience. Teenagers on up to be exact. Don’t see it short though. Eight Crazy Nights is one of the more underappreciated holiday films. You rarely see it on lists and rarely hear it dis-cussed but it’s still amazing and still deserves a watch.

Why December is the Most Magical Time of the Year

If you start blast-ing Mariah Carey’s “All I Want for Christmas” (because that is obvi-ously the best Christ-mas song there is) the second you finish the last bite of your Thanks-giving dinner, then you probably understand the magic of Decem-ber. When December first rolls around, it almost feels as though the world enters into a different, more jolly dimension with a lot more decorations. The magic of December obviously brings the holidays. For some, the magic is lost once they grow up, but if you pay attention and look around this month, you will see there is plenty of magic left in the holiday season. No matter what you celebrate, it usually guarantees that friends and family will surround you. Time with loved ones that you may not see very often always bring good spirits. Everyone is just a little nicer and more likely to perform good deeds. December has a spell on the hu-man population that causes everyone to be on their best behavior. December has a certain sweet, crisp smell in the cool air. If you’re lucky, you’ll see snow to

By, Gabby of Gabrielle Antoinette

complete the picturesque feel of December. You don’t have to shave your legs anymore or worry about the food baby all the holiday cookies you’ve been eating looks like because it’s acceptable to be completely engulfed in big sweaters and scarves all month, which is a truly magical thing. The last month of the year means that you can carry around the red Starbucks cups filled with your favorite seasonal drink while you walk through the twinkling Christmas lights in the city. I would argue that the big Christmas trees, like the one at The Rock-efeller Center in New York City, surrounded by lights with Christmas

music in the background is the closest we will get to magic. This makes it feel like whole world sort of turns into a movie set. All of the props and decorations romanticize your everyday life, at least for a month. We have 31 days of the year that are just a little more magical than the rest, so grab your peppermint mocha, go ice skating and play in the snow. Enjoy the last days of the year before we begin a new one and start all over!

Christmas with the In-Laws. It’s something almost everyone is going to have to do at some point. Whether you’re having your first Christmas with your new husband or wife’s family, or your second or third with your boyfriend or girl-friend’s parents and siblings, it’s most likely going to be awkward. Here are a few tips on how to make it slightly-less awk-ward. Bring some-thing // Whether it’s a present for the whole house, flowers, or a dish, don’t show up empty handed! The family will love you for it! Dress appropriately // Is it a formal dinner? A casual lunch? A silly party? Ask your partner what the theme is for the night. No mat-ter what, try to dress modestly! A sweater and a scarf is a great option

for something more casual. Small talk // Small talk is pretty hard to do but it goes a long way.

Chat about col-lege, or school, how you like their home, etc. Ask questions // If small talk isn’t really your thing, ask questions. People naturally love to talk about themselves. Ask what they do for a living, how they like it, where they went to col-lege, how your partner was as a child, etc. It gets the pressure off of you. Be consider-

ate // Say yes ma’am, no ma’am. Yes sir, no sir. Take your shoes off in the house. Always say please and thank you. Basically just use your manners. They will get your very far, and it’s always good to be polite.

The Perfect Christmas Eve DinnerChristmas is stressful. I’m only 18 but I can already feel the stress of the holidays creeping up on me in November. Between spending more money on gifts than we’ve planned, hosting Christmas parties or extended family gatherings we sometimes forget about the actual meaning of Christmas Eve and the

This can be done the minute you know for how many you’re cooking. It may seem hard because even after you’ve bought every single ingredient there’s always some-thing else you could’ve added to your menu but don’t stress over that. It’s the worst to go last minute shopping because you’d just stuff the shopping cart with completely unnecessary items.

When you’re with your loved ones they won’t mind if you serve them restaurant-quality Turkey with some fancy port and cranberry sauce or chicken wings with mashed potatoes.

This always gets me in the Christmas spirit, even if everything else fails, music is certain to lighten the mood. And remember, if you mess up the food, you can always just turn off the lights, light candles and pretend everything’s fine.

Not everything has to be perfect to have a great time with your loved ones. Whether it’s your friends or family, they won’t mind if the food is not the exact same color as it is in the recipe photo. As long as you can laugh about it instead of being grumpy all through New Year’s Eve, you know you’ve made the perfect Christmas Eve dinner.

most important meal of December 24th – Christmas dinner. If you’re (probably) going to be running around stores like a headless chicken and try to get every dish done in the last minute, here are a couple of tips to make your December a little less stressful.

3Again, it’s not about perfection. In the spirit of Christmas, I usually check out Pinter-est for decoration ideas a week beforehand and then have someone else decorate the table and set the plates if I haven’t got the time to do it.

Sophia Webster for J. Crew HeelsI was on the J. Crew website and I saw these

beauties. I mean they are amazing. Can you not see a fabulous woman wearing these bad boys to a

summer BBQ in the Hamptons? HAYDEN

Madewell Silk Cinch-Waist DressThis is the perfect dress for a “dressy casual” holiday party. And I really like the more muted red color. Pair it with a statement necklace and some low heels and

you are ready to go. HAYDEN

Provencal Stoneware Pitcher

On my 101 in 1001 list, one of the items is to keep fresh

flowers in my dorm room. So I have been looking for the

perfect vase to put them in this coming spring. I think this

pitcher is so perfect! HAYDEN

The Little Black Jacket @ Anthropologie

Ever since Karl Lagerfeld recreated The Little Black Jacket I have been wanting this book.

First of all Carine Roitfeld is on the cover looking eerily like Coco Chanel. Then the rest

of the book is filled with other amazing women and their take on the classic tweed jacket. I

would also like the jacket, but I mean the book is a good start. HAYDEN

Trootoys Custom ToyNeed the perfect gift for a little kid in your

life? Look no further! All you do is send in a drawing the child has made and this company will make it into a custom toy! I wish this was

around when I was little! HAYDEN

Fendi Logo Key CaseI’m obsessed with the Fendi Logo key Case because, first, Fendi is my all time favorite

designer and I’m a huge fan of compact items that I can throw into a cute little clutch. I was also excited to see that even though it’s a logo

theme, they threw in a color contrast at the zipper and the inside for a more vibrant look!
