Making a Difference

Dear Friends and District 6860 Rotarians,

Seasons Greetings and a Prosperous New Year to all. On this New Year’s Day, I find that I reflect on the previous year a bit, then go on to the new year. So, in summary of 2017, as your District Governor, I’ve visited 50 of our district’s 52 clubs. The Rotary Club of Jasper and the Rotary Club of North Shelby Inverness will be visited in February and March. In July, I joined the Rotary Club of Arab and many Rotarians witin our district in honoring Byron Nelson, a long-time Rotarian and a Past District Governor. We had our first Rotary Zone institute in Birmingham with 13 Rotarians from our district attending. In August, our district organized and participated in the District 6860 fund raiser for the Critical Care Transport of Children’s Hospital. This is a yearly event and to date we have raised over $700,000 with a goal of $1,000,000 by August 2018. 2018 is our tenth year for Boiling and Bragging. In September, many Rotarians in our district attended the Zone Institute in Springfield, Illinois for Zones 30 and 31. Our district is a part of Zone 30. Our district received recognition in 5 of the 6 areas:

Total Contributions, $1,252,136, first in Zone 30 Polio Contributions, $106,663, second in Zone 30

Endownment Fund Contributions, $172,825, third in Zone 30 Annual Fund Contributions, $429,648, second in Zone 30

20% of DDF was given to the Eradication of Polio

Congratulations goes to PDG Gary Andrew for these Zone recognitions. In October, our District held its annual Fall Leadership Meeting at the Harbert Center in Birmingham. Several meetings were held including the Council on Finance, the Council of Governor’s, the Assistant Governors’ meeting and the General Business meeting. The day ended with a dinner. Mark Maloney, Rotary International President Nominee was our keynote speaker for the dinner. Thank you, Mark, for your participation within our district and congratulations on your selection as Rotary International President for 2019-2020.

Making a Difference

In November, our District held its annual Foundation Dinner at Ross Bridge in Birmingham with RI President Elect Barry Rassin as our keynote speaker. Over 100 Rotarians and their partners attended this dinner. Many thanks go to Chair Bo Porter and his committee for this wonderful dinner. Also, in November, our District partnered with District 6880, South Alabama, the state of Alabama, ALFA, and the Alabama Farmers Committed to plant trees in Alabama, as requested by our Rotary International President, Ian Risely. That’s my reflection of activities for the first half of the year as your District Governor. Now, let’s continue to join our fellow Rotarians in “Service Above Self.” Upcoming events for 2018 include:

VOCATIONAL SERVICE AWARDS

Purpose of Award To recognize, each Rotary year, one Non-Rotarian person in District 6860 and one Rotarian, both for Vocational Service on a District, State, Region, National, or World basis (i.e. vocational service recognized significantly beyond the territory of a club). The Annual Award is based on recognition as excellence in representing and performing in a vocation with recognition of achievement significantly beyond one club or territory. To make application for this award you may download the application forms from the district web site. TRF Club Awards for 2016-2017 At the end of November 2017, DG Sue Mitchell received notification of the following awards for the 2016-2017 year. Congratulations goes to PDG Gary Andrew and Rotary District 6860 for all that you have done and continue to do in support of our Rotary Foundation. To ensure that the following clubs receive their recognition, she has been visiting these clubs and presenting the banner, letter and/or certificate for their TRF recognition. She will continue to visit the remaining clubs after the new year.

Congratulations to the Rotary Clubs in our District for achievement of the following awards:

Presidential Citation for 2016-2017: the Presidential Citation is given to Rotary clubs who achieve the goals as defined by the Rotary President John Germ for 2016-2017. Rotary clubs that achieve the goals listed in the Rotary citation brochure by the end of the Rotary year will earn the Rotary Citation. All activities need to be completed, reported, and reflected in the Rotary database by 30 June. We have two clubs within our District that have received the Presidential Citation for 2016-2017: the Rotary Club of Birmingham and Rotary Club of Trussville Daybreak. Banner Recognition Summary: Top Per Capita Rank. This is awarded to the top three Annual Fund per capita giving clubs in every district (requires a minimum of US $50 per capita). These clubs were: Rotary Club of Decatur Daybreak, first within the district with a per capita of $385.41; Rotary Club of Cullman, second within the district with a per capita of $287.93; and Rotary Club of Anniston, third within the district with a per capita of $248.20.

Banner Recognition Summary: 100% TRF Giving. This is awarded to clubs in which every dues-paying member contributes a minimum of US $25 to The Rotary Foundation, and the average contribution is at least US $100 to any Rotary Foundation gift designation. The following clubs have achieved this recognition for 2016-2017: Rotary Club of Cullman, Rotary Club of Alabaster-Pelham, Rotary Club of Alexander City, Rotary Club of Bessemer, Rotary Club of Gadsden, Rotary Club of Greater Huntsville, Rotary Club of North Shelby-Inverness, Rotary Club of Trussville Daybreak.

Banner Recognition Summary: EREY (Every Rotarian Every Year). This is awarded to clubs in which every dues-paying member contributes a minimum of US $25 to the Annual Fund, and the Annual Fund per capita giving is at least US $100. The following clubs have achieved this recognition for 2016-2017: Rotary Club of Cullman, Rotary Club of Alexander City, Rotary Club of Bessemer, Rotary Club of North Shelby-Inverness.

End Polio Now: Make History Today Campaign Certificate of Appreciation. This is awarded to those clubs that contributed US $1,500 or more to Rotary’s Challenge to End Polio Now. The following clubs have achieved this recognition for 2016-2017: Rotary Club of Albertville, Rotary Club of Athens, Rotary Club of Birmingham, Rotary Club of Birmingham-Sunrise, Rotary Club of Cullman, Rotary Club of Decatur, Rotary Club of Decatur Daybreak, Rotary Club of Florence, Rotary Club of Gadsden, Rotary Club of Greater Huntsville, Rotary Club of Madison, Rotary Club of Shades Valley, Rotary Club of Trussville Daybreak, Rotary club of Tuscaloosa, Rotary Club of Vestavia Hills, Rotary Club of Vestavia Hills Sunrise.
