Remembering Ann Those of you who were present at our Christmas luncheon will recall an announcement that was made with regards to Ann Dubé’s health. Ann was a member of the RTO/ERO Executive Board for our district. She was the Chair of our Membership Services Committee.

In January, we learned that Ann was being treated at the Lakeridge Health Center in Oshawa, where she was receiving treatment for pancreatic cancer. Ann passed away at the age of 76, on February 14th, 2014.

What is truly remarkable about Ann was her sense of commitment and dedication to serving others. On our Executive Board her responsibilities were numerous and yet she completed them with quiet and assuring guidance. Never one to complain about her workload, she would dutifully carry on with her tasks making sure that everything was done in an orderly fashion.

Ann was not only involved at RTO/ERO. She sat on countless committees: Canadian Showcase Dancers, Ontario Liberal Association (Sudbury Riding), Camp Quality (children with cancer), Sudbury Rising Stars (seniors group), Retired Women Teachers of Ontario (RWTO/OERA), Catholic Women’s League (St Andrew the Apostle Parish), just to name a few. From the President’s Desk (continued)

Another moment came at our September Executive Board meeting. We were discussing the fact that our participatory levels for Relay for Life had fallen dramatically and maybe we should consider withdrawing our participation. Ann, with a heavy heart and tears in her eyes, implored all of us not to abandon this endeavour because of what it meant to individuals who are fighting cancer and to those who had lost loved ones to this unforgiving disease. Who would have known that in the space of a few months we would be participating in Relay for Life and walking in her memory.

Ann always put others first in her thoughts, tried to do things to the best of her abilities and did this by making sure to have a good laugh along the way. There is no doubt that she will be missed and that her dedication to improving the lives of others will remain her hallmark.

Thank you Ann for everything.

Ronald Robert

StampsPauline Therrien would like to thank everyone who continues to support the Oxfam stamp project. In a recent email from Bill Woodley, Oxfam Volunteer Coordinator Stamp Program, she learned that our RTO/ERO District 4 contributions helped in the raising of $22,000.00 for the program. WOW!! Let’s continue to save those stamps!

Please call usPlease call any member of the Goodwill/Bienfaisance committee when you learn of the death of a member. We would rather receive ten phone calls than not receive any notification. Unfortunately, sometimes we learn of the death of a member some months after the funeral. It is difficult to send a condolence card once so much time has elasped. Gen Waszczylo [email protected]

NORTHSHORE, MANITOULIN NEWSBEATAs I sit here, in my cosy, warm Florida retreat, I think of everyone back home battling this “good old-fashioned winter’, with its endless snow and cold. By May 22, 2014, when we hold the RTO/ERO general meeting at the Elk’s Lodge in Espanola, spring will be here and the daffodils will be showing their sunny faces (or so we hope). Members of the Executive Team will be contacting you about attending. It is always an interesting meeting with a guest speaker and excellent food provided by the ladies of the Elk’s Lodge. Our guest speaker this time is Michael Constantineau, who will speak about his time teaching in the far North.

Retired Women Teachers of Ontario/Organisation des enseignantes retraitées de l’Ontario (RWTO/OERO)Getting to know us Our Branch Executive plans the year with three main objectives: have interesting and varied meetings, give special consideration to our shut-ins and help the community at large.

For the past three years we have held a “Creative Hands” fund raiser at our Christmas luncheon. Members bring wonderful home-made items such as fudge, preserves, placemats, jewelry ... to be sold. That in itself creates a great atmosphere and encourages socializing. At the same luncheon, as we have done for over 20 years, members give generously to the local food bank, Inner City Home.

This year we invited two keynote speakers. The first one, Dr Paul André Gauthier, whose topic was “Euthanasia and quality of care are not synonyms”, stressed the importance of keeping our dignity during the last stages of life. As this is a much debated subject, it created a lot of interest and helped us to revisit our opinion on the matter.

At our final luncheon which will be held on May 13, our speaker, the owner of Nu Wave, will encourage us to improve our well-being. You are most welcome to attend. Simply call Nancy Rousselle at 705-566-0508.

We will wrap up the year with a golf tournament on which occasion we encourage our members to invite a friend ... maybe a new member. If you are interested in joining us for that event please call Laurianne Valiquette at 705-566-1443.

Pension and Retirement Concerns Committee:December 2013 Liaison ReportThe Committee welcomed new member Liz Whiton to a three-year term and Martha Foster as Provincial Executive liaison.

Pension TidbitsA CARP survey (http://www.carp.ca/wp-content/uploads/2013/11/CARP-CPP-Poll-Report1.pdf) indicated that 53% of its members wanted Canada Pension Plan Contributions increased so benefits can be expanded. The federal government will not consider this option.

Jim Leech retires as CEO of OTPP at the end of December. He co-authored a new book entitled “The Third Rail” about retirement savings, the state of Canadian pension plans, some of the challenges that other districts have faced and what they did to repair the programs. It sounds like a good read.

Jim Leech’s comment, December 12, 2013 on CBC’s Ontario Today – Pensions: The Third Rail - http://www.cbc.ca/ontariotoday/2013/12/

“For every $1.00 that a retired teacher gets, $0.11 of that dollar came from the taxpayer, $0.11 came from the teacher and $0.78 came from the investment returns that the Ontario Teachers’ Pension Plan has been able to earn on that $0.22.”

Fact SheetsTwo new fact sheets have been created and will be posted on the website. They deal with Sleep for Seniors and Online Privacy and Security.

The following Fact sheets have been updated and reposted:

A-1 Free Chartered Accountants’ Tax Clinics, A-2 Tax Information, A-7 Using Credit Cards,A-10 Joint Asset Planning, B-2 Guaranteed Income Supplement,B-4 Spouse’s Allowance and Allowance for Survivor,B-5 Veterans, C-9 Community Care Access Centre, C-11 LHINs, C-12 Alzheimer’s Disease, H-2 Driver License Renewal.

New Resources for Districts and MembersThe Committee has recognized the need to provide Districts with information on a series of topics/issues such as:

• impact retirement has on a retiree’s financial, physical and psychological well-being;• information alerts on scams;• information on the benefits of daily exercise;• information on volunteerism.

These topics will be researched and presented to the districts using a variety of formats.New InitiativeThe Committee agreed that a yearly summary of OTPP and OMERS pension plans performance and issues should be sent to the Districts.

Be Prepared “If you don’t know your options, you don’t have any.” Lauren Vary

In February 2013, RTO/ERO began research into the care and support that patients and family caregivers could expect from our health care system. The research began out of concern for patients who were sent home from hospital to recover without adequate time to prepare, nor timely support. Within a few months, we discovered that changes are inevitable, that we need to be aware of new protocols implemented, and that numerous new programs are available.

Our concerns proved well founded. Each advancement in our research revealed that the system expects the patient and family caregivers to be responsible, not only for accessing the care needed, but for being the principal caregiver. Several HSN Forums, knowledgeable researchers in the care of aging patients, healthcare professionals, executives responsible for the delivery of health care, various newspaper articles described the complexities and flaws in programs which intend to deliver “the right care, in the right place, at the right time.” (Ontario Action Plan)

Changes being implemented in the community, such as those housed at the Memorial site, give us hope that, in time, the system will find a balance among care in our home, assets in our community, critical hospital interventions, and the driving force, cost.

But, patients and their loving family caregivers must function with the system as it exists today.Lauren Vary gave a moving account of the years of support she received from CCAC to care for her husband, including end of life, in their family home. Once again, we heard both the negative and positive aspects of the level of care CCAC could provide. Her clearly stated advice should be heeded, “if you don’t know your options, you don’t have any.”

RTO/ERO will do our best to inform our members. Numerous programs exist within the health care system, associations, volunteer groups and businesses in the community; they can help. We will continue to hand out material we are able to obtain for you; more effectively, we will place links on our website so that you can access information about your specific needs.

We suggest that you begin perusing websites before a health crisis. Listen carefully to those who describe their experiences. Be prepared.

QUITE INTERESTING INDEED!A sliced carrot looks like the human eye. The pupil, iris and radiating lines look just like the human eye... And YES, science now shows carrots greatly enhance blood flow to and function of the eyes.

A tomato has four chambers and is red. The heart has four chambers and is red. All of the research shows tomatoes are loaded with lycopine and are indeed pure heart and blood food.

Grapes hang in a cluster that has the shape of the heart. Each grape looks like a blood cell and all of the research today shows grapes are also profound heart and blood vitalizing food.

On a commencé

Juliette Lavoie-Gaboury

Travel Journal

The Czech Republic, Austria, Slovakia and Hungary offered us a tour in October that will be remembered; music lovers, history buffs, photographers, gourmet meals and fine wine enthusiasts, all found pleasure in this European region. We started the journey in the romantic old town of Prague, city of a thousand towers and steeples, well preserved capital because it has escaped the destruction of the Second World War. We walked in the footsteps of Mozart, Beethoven, Tchaikovsky and Rodin while visiting the Prague Castle, the gothic Powder Gate, the Old Town Square with the Astronomical Clock, the Church of

St. Nicholas, the Jewish Quarter, Charles Bridge with its beautiful statues, the Church of Our Lady Victorious which houses the wax statue of Infant Jesus of Prague of Spanish origin and the Lennon Wall. Our guide Vaclac Stastny, a local expert, has us discover and enjoy the flavor and diversity of the region both by his stories and our stops to discover local beers and local cuisine.

Thereafter, it was a cruise going down the Danube from Passau in Germany to Hungary. We were on our first river cruise and we were not

disappointed. We docked in the heart of historic cities - Vienna, Melk, Lesk, Durstein, Bratislava and Budapest. Custom tours helped to make this trip memorable. I remember the breathtaking landscapes, forts built on hills, magnificent castles and vineyards on the slopes along the river. Every day, a leaflet summarizing the activities of the day was given to us. My favorites were the cities of Bratislava, Budapest, Cesky Krumlov and I

must not forget the classical music concert in Vienna with the most famous melodies of Mozart and Strauss, the visit to the Benedictine Abbey of Melk with its library of manuscripts and on board performances by musicians and dancers in traditional costume.

I returned enchanted of our cruise on the Danube. The new ship had large cabins with a very good room service. Not necessary to pack our luggage every day, the hotel followed us! A maximum of 150 people onboard made for intimate, warm and comfortable cruising, the perfect ambiance for creating friendships and exchanges that leave me with good memories. As for meals, the smorgasbord of food was delicious and varied; in the evening, my group was lucky enough to have a reserved room to socialize and have supper together with first class attention from our personal server Constantine. Each port of call allowed us to go on an adventure and marvel at historic treasures, connected through a stereo stethoset headphone system to a guide. One surprise after another, I surely recommend a cruise on the Danube on the AmaPrima ; the crew ensures carefree travel. I greatly enjoyed this trip.

February 2014 General Meeting/rencontre de févrierOn February 20, RTO/ERO hosted an information meeting on the services provided locally by CCAC. The attending members learned of the challenges that home care, an integral part of our health care system, was facing and the many ways that CCAC copes with the new protocols in order to offer timely and much appreciated care. Several pamphlets were distributed.

It was stressed many times that it is imperative that our members be informed of the services that are available to them and they must be prepared with contingency plans before a health crisis occurs. We must be proactive! Otherwise, we will be at the mercy of the weaknesses of our health care system.
