As we begin the ‘Second Century’ of Lionism, I am HAPPY, HUMBLE, EXCITED and very PROUD to be the District Gover-nor for District 19-I. Thank you for giving me the opportunity to ‘SERVE’ along with each of you, and ‘Together’ we can help the less fortunate.
Service is why the Lions Clubs exist. We exist to serve those who are less fortunate than we are. Every day throughout the world Lions are working to improve the lives of thousands of people. We help feed the hungry, those in need of eyeglasses, those who are confined to wheelchairs, and many, many other situations; we help everyone we can, in any way we can!
We start by assisting the needy in our own communities and then we branch out to service the world. We should be extremely proud to be part of this family of LIONS!!!!
We must realize also that we are not enough members to help everyone so we must continue to grow. That is why the emphases is put on getting new members. We need more members who care about those who are in need. We can start out by helping other members of our Lions family, who are in need. This method of Lions helping Lions will bring us all closer together and will make our Clubs stronger. Be part of the Lions family and help wherever we are needed.
Thank you all for what you have accomplished in the First Centu-ry of Lionism. Do not let your ‘light’ go out.....let’s get a good start on the Second Century of Lionism!

The Shawnigan Campership Committee is putting on a “night away” girls’ bus trip to raise some funds for camperships. The fun-filled trip is called “The S.T.U.D. Trip” (Shop Till U Drop) with lots of fun and a few surprises.
The bus will pick us up in Sooke at 7:00 a.m. and we will catch the 9:00 a.m. ferry to Vancouver. (There will also be a pickup in Victoria).
We will arrive at Tsawwassen Mills Mall for a fun day of shopping, and grab some lunch. We will then check into our hotel, have dinner, and then off to the River Rock Casino.
In the morning after breakfast we head off to IKEA - “ START THE CAR”! After shopping we will head back to the ferry to come home for a much needed nap!
All this for $190 for “two to a room” or $160 for “four to a room”. Only 54 seats will be sold and they are selling fast. So come on out and
support a great cause for some great kids, and have a fun night away.
An all girls “fun filled” bus trip to Tsawwassen Mills Shopping Centre, then off to River Rock Casino and then back to the hotel. Finally finish off the trip on Sunday with a trip to IKEA and back to the Island.

Lions Clubs International Foundation
CHAIRPERSONDr. Jitsuhiro Yamada
The End of a
Milestone Year
Dear Lions,
Throughout my year as Chairperson of Lions Clubs International Foundation (LCIF), I have witnessed the wonderful projects Lions are carry-ing out all over the world with the support of our foundation. I visited a community grateful for the opportunity to rebuild after an earthquake. I saw relief on the faces of refugee families receiv-ing care from Lions. I celebrated with children around the world who are being empowered by LCIF. I met Special Olympics athletes who shined while showing the world their talents. I saw communities transform after being provided clean water.
Thank you, Lions, for your support of LCIF. We are able to do great things when we work together. I also want to thank the Lions leaders who are working hard to educate Lions about LCIF and promote a relationship between LCIF and our clubs.
Let’s continue to spread the word of the great work LCIF is accomplishing, including the US$1 billion in grants we have awarded since our founding. Our foundation is depending on your support to continue its vital mission.

MAYNE ISLANDLions Club
By PDG Alan Guy
Mayne Island Lions have just completed the installation of a triple flagpole at our “down-town” park. This structure will allow for the
Maple leaf, the B.C. flag to fly there all the time, while the third pole will be a sort of Rent-a-Pole, available for Island groups to fly their flag at significant times or events for them. When no other group needs the pole, it will carry a Lions flag.
When all three poles are in use, will try to get a photo with perhaps some of the installers and builders.

We just had our final meeting for this Lions year—a picnic/BBQ. New officers were in-stalled by me (Zone Chair Maureen Winn).
We have a big fundraiser coming up the sec-ond weekend of July—Clallam Bay/Sekiu Fun Days BBQ. Our Club grills hamburgers and hot dogs for the weekend of fun.
My Club honored me with “Lion of the Year” award (a total surprise to me!) at this last meeting.

LADYSMITH Lions ClubHelping Ladysmith BC keep our Guiness World Record
for most playing Street Hockey... we held the record and 10 years later on June 4th, 2017we qualified to KEEP the winning WORLD RECORD!
To qualify as a team you had to have minumum of eight players and the Ladysmith Lions Club stepped up to the net and played two games, 15 minutes each.
We lost 31 to 1 first round but after lunch and a break, with the next team we lost only 16 to 8, so kept our heads high. The MC announcer said the Number 1 Rule was to have fun, and WE DID!

As in several previous years, in preparation for Canada Day, our Club took the Lions Proj-ect Pride to the Grade 1 students in the local Schools in June. Always a great experience sharing information about Canada and providing all with a Canadian Flag but in particular this year as we celebrate Canada’s 150th Birthday!
Pictured is the team from one of the days: Lions Ron, Gerd, and Gary along with an RCMP officer who accompanied the Lions to the schools to explain some of the history of the RCMP.
In April, May & June our Lions Club provided SPOT Vision Screening to all the grade 2 & 4 students in the Comox Valley. We screened 1,178 students and 66 of them required a referral to an Optometrist for further assessment. It was an honour for our Club to be able to provide this service and we look forward to doing this all over again next school year.
Pictured on the left are Lions Ron, Chris & Doug just prior to the start of the first school to be screened, Arden Elementary.
We were too busy screen-ing to take any further pictures.

On June 3rd seven members of the Comox Valley Lions Club made the three hour trip to Port McNeill to join that Club in the celebra-tion of their 50th Charter Anniversary. We were impressed with the amount of fundraising and
projects this Club in a smaller community has accomplished in those 50 years and we tip our Lions Hat to them!!
Past Council Chair Al Beddows shared the Club history. We would like to have been there when they relocated what is now their Lions Hall to the current location.
President Bob took this picture of Lions Teona, Nancy, Shelley, Patty, DGE Joyce and Terri in front of the Port McNeill banner. We wish the Club another very successful 50 years.
On June 6th the Comox Valley Lions Club installed their Exec-utive for 2017-2018 and welcomed our newest member, Leona Murray, into the World of Lions. Here is the sponsor, Lion Teona,
new Lion Leona and PDG Steve who inducted our new member. Welcome to our Lions Club Leona, who has already been busy working our Bingos on a regular basis!
On Saturday June 24, the Comox Valley Lions Club hosted a community garage sale at our Lions Den for the residents
of the two Lions Senior Housing Buildings. We had nine tables with a variety of merchan-dise with all vendors reporting good sales and their thanks for our providing this service.
BLACK CREEKLions Club
On June 17th members of the Black Creek Lions Club, along with CVLC President Bob, removed lawn and vegetation next to Quadra Gardens. The 29 unit Quadra Gardens is one of two properties operated by
D’Esterre Senior Citizens Housing Society (a project of Black Creek Lions, CV Monarch Lions & CVLC ) which provides 45 units of housing to Low Income Seniors in Comox. The next step is the installation of a weed barrier and the area will be loaded with rock, making maintenance easier. Thanks to J.R. Edgett Excavating Ltd. The Esquimalt Lions Club celebrated their 66th Installation of Officers in the Curling Lounge of the Archie Browning Centre on June 20, 2017. The “soupy” installation was conducted by PZC Jane Beddows, ably assisted by her husband, PCC Al. It was a great evening and an enjoyable time was had by all who attended. The event was catered by 1550s Pub Restaurant of Victoria and, as always, the meal was excellent.
Many awards and recognitions were handed out during the evening. However, one that
particularly stands out is Lion of the Year. It is particularly
significant since it is given by your peers in the Club to show their respect and admiration for the recipient as a person
and as a Lion. Presented by ZC Brian Morin,
the year’s recipient is our re-elected Club Treasurer,
PZC Bob McKie. CONGRATULATIONS

There were Lions who just relaxed enjoying each other, and there were Lions who got out in the sun and the back woods and played Whacky Golf! What a hoot... loads of fun! Special thanks to Duncan Lions Lyn and Leo for organizing the game.

MILL BAYLions Club

We have just completed our Walter Hall Memorial Family Fishing Derby that we co-hosted with the Mala-hat Legion #134. All went
well and people had a great time. Lots of fish weighed in, lots of burgers eaten, and lots of prizes won too.
We are now gearing up to cohost the July 1 Canada Day pancake breakfast again with the Malahat Legion. It will be held in the picnic area at the back of the Legion with the Hearty Mill Bay Lions cooking up a storm. Everyone welcome from 8:30 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. and cost is $6.00 for the pancake and sausage breaky with juice or coffee. Hope to see you there! It will be held at the Royal Canadian Malahat Legion at 1625 Shawnigan Mill Bay Rd.
