  • On October 19, 1918, Upper Thumb native, Bad Axe resident, and then Michigan Governor Albert Sleeper made a proclamation closing churches, public meetings, movie theaters, pool rooms, billiard rooms and dance halls.

“Whereas it is a matter of common knowledge that the state of Michigan, in common with other states of the Union, is facing the serious and imminent danger of an epidemic from the disease commonly known as Spanish influenza, which is prevalent in particularly all communities through-out the state,” Sleeper said in his proclamation.” And, whereas, said disease is highly contagious and is spread by personal contact with the persons infected therewith, thus creating the necessity of avoiding, in so far as possible, all gatherings and meetings whatsoever. “

The November 29, 1918 pages report that there were many influenza cases in Ubly, Pigeon, Bad Axe, and Harbor Beach. There was a story about Rev. Michael Barnett, the Pastor of St. John’s Catholic Church in Ubly, who died from the influenza on Nov. 5, 1918.

Another article how to avoid the influenza includes tips such as avoiding common drinking cups and public towels and getting plenty of exercise in the open air. If someone does feel flu symptoms, then it was recommended they go to bed and take a hot mustard foot bath and drink hot lemonade. It also lists different kinds of medication to take for treating symptoms.

Some Historical accounts estimate more than 14,000 Michiganders died of the Spanish influenza between 1918 and 1919.

The COVID 19 pandemic of 2020, inspired and motivated me to start “THE HEALTHY LIONS CLUB”. The club will include health care professional, MD’s, Chiropractors, Nurses, First Responders, Nutrition coaches and anyone who is in the Health Care Field. The Club will be a Hybrid club; that is will meet in person and via Zoom. The “Well Coffee House” in Sandusky will be the Home. The membership is open to any one regardless of health care background and your residency! We will meet on the 2nd Saturday of the month at 1:30 pm EST. The Mission Statement is “to empower volunteers to Serve their communities and provide needed Health Care advise at home and all over the world, through Lions Clubs International “

Hello fellow Lions. I wanted to take this time this month to talk about communication between the clubs. One of the things that I see when talking to the different clubs in our area is that there is very little communication between them. I would like to see more involvement between the clubs in the next year. Some of the clubs are literally 10 minutes apart but neither club knows what the others are doing or knows any of the members. It’s great to share ideas and maybe even get the extra couple of volunteers for your next event. I really like the idea of clubs helping out with each other’s events and actually getting to know each other and getting exposed to some different ways of holding events. Some suggestions I have would be to invite another club for a potluck dinner or have a club participate in a friendly event like a euchre night pitting the clubs against each other. I understand that currently many of us are unable to do this but I am hoping in the future that this can be possible. We have so much to learn from each other as there are so many clubs with so many perspectives that I really think can be explored by other clubs. Be safe and have a great holiday. Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any questions or ideas for our district.

Lions Clubs International Foundation Nine (9) Clubs within District 11 – D2 have a total of 15 unclaimed Melvin Jones Fellowships (MJF) that they may request and present to club members, or someone in their community they would like to honor. Additionally, one (1) individual has accumulated enough in his/her LCIF account to apply for three (3) progressive MJFs (PMJF). Clubs may request the recognition on their own or may request help from the District LCIF coordinator, Wes Wagester. The LCIF report that lists MJF/PMJF recipients lists 257 Lions/Community members in District 11 – D2 have received recognition, with six (6) having received PMJFs. To qualify for a MJF, the District, a Club, or an individual must accumulate one Thousand dollars ($1,000.00 in their LCIF account.

There’s nothing more central to being a Lion than service. It’s why we joined and it’s what we do. Through our support of Campaign 100 LCIF provides the resources needed to take on the issues we care about, bringing about real and lasting change.

You can help raise funds for LCIF Campaign 100 by:

    Making an individual donation.

Planning fundraising events (virtual or in person)

Encourage you club to donate from the club treasury.

Invite support from local businesses and non-Lions.

Please consider making an individual donation to LCIF. A donation can help you achieve A Melvin Jones Fellowship, or if you are a Melvin Jones Fellowship recipient already then to achieve a Progressive Melvin Jones Fellowship.

  • 2021 CONVENTION COMMITTEE NEWS- JANUARY 3-DIGIT RAFFLE

The conventions committee has decided to once again, hold a raffle based upon the nightly 3-digit Michigan Lottery draw. Every dollar we receive through the raffle is a dollar Lions will need to pay for meals and other services at the 2021 District convention in Grand Rapids.

Tickets were mailed to CLUB SECRETARYS, now that they have arrived please try to sell all you can. The deadline for the sale of the tickets has been extended due to the COVID virus. It will be necessary to contact the Bowerman’s by email or phone if you need additional tickets to sell. Checks need to be made out to 11 D2 Convention Committee. PLEASE make and keep a copy of all tickets sold and their buyers. This is a great help if something happens to the tickets in the mail. We need your help.

These make great Christmas gifts or stocking stuffers! Thank you, Terry & Pat Bowerman 810-724-0818 ([email protected])

LEO CLUBS District 11 D-2 needs Leo clubs, there is only one in the District with 46 active clubs. Our district LEO advisors have been working to create an opportunity for State LEOS to get together. As a result of COVID shut downs many LEO Clubs have had a hard time meeting and providing service in their local communities. The first MI LEO ZOOM Chat will be held on December 2nd. LEOs will have the chance to meet other LEOs, talk about their club, share ideas and have fun. We are in need of contact information for other LEO Clubs that may not have received the information, to be sure they will be included in any upcoming Chats If you know any LEO advisors or interested clubs please contact Nicole Stuhec at [email protected].

  • This years winner of the Peace Poster contest is Rhianne Harwood from Almont Middle School. This is the third time the Peace Poster winner was from Almont Lions. The Almont Lions Club has two school districts that they represent in the contest, Almont and Dryden.

  • Lexington Lions Given Back to The Community

The Lexington Lions club just completed its Goodfellow drive by purchasing $20,000 worth of Kohl's gift cards for 100 Sanilac County children in the foster care system. Volunteers shopped with the children at Kohl's to purchase clothes as needed and some toys for Christmas. In addition, this week we will deliver food collected by the Cros-Lex Middle School students to Project Blessing in Lexington.

Lexington Lions have recycled enough plastic film, 2000 pounds of it, through the Trex Recycling Challenge to earn 8 park benches from Trex, four of which have been placed at the Lexington Mobile Home park.

    MEMPHIS LIONS

Memphis Lions come to together to help a stroke victim with his back porch and steps. He could not climb a regular-stairs with the average rise on the steps. He needed closer rise to lift his leg a shorter distance.

With the support of local churches, school and St. Clair Community Foundation, Memphis Lions will once again this year put together food baskets to hand out to families in need this Holiday Season. St. Clair Community Foundation has awarded a grant to the Memphis Lions to assist with the cost of the baskets. The Lions also work closely with Medilodge of Richmond to provide Christmas cheer and presents to four residents without family support. The food baskets will contain canned food, personal hygiene products, paper products, a ham and all the trimmings for a traditional Christmas dinner. Memphis Lion Nancy Thomson runs these programs and implemented the grant request.

  • APPLEGATE LIONS

For over 20 years the Applegate lions have provided a concession for the shoppers at the Western Tree Farm in Applegate, working four weekends starting the week before Thanksgiving, serving some of the most delicious Chili along with hot dogs, cider, soda, coffee and cookies. This is a Lions and family event for the members. Pictured is ZC Rich Cochrill, Lion Deb Steeb, Brady Steeb and Emma Ginther. Many others in the club and their family members are also included in this endeavor. COVID-19 can’t stop these fine Lions.

    YALE LIONS

Yale Lions install two new members at their regular meeting. Pictured is sponsor Dart Arnold with new member, Lion James Peck, President John Tomaschko, new member, Lion Coleen Hughes with sponsor Lion Tim Bobcean.

Yale Lions were working on their Goodfellow paper drive set for the end of November. There are many clubs doing Goodfellow papers. It has been extremely difficult to get any kind of fundraising going during this extreme time of the COVID-19 decease.
