PUBLISHERS

Magazine publishing consists a process including steps from getting the actual magazines from the initial manuscript stage to the final publication. The publishers have a responsibility of controlling the editorial content and design of the magazine. Moreover, they would also need to have good communication with the advertisers – to allow the magazines to become available to the readers – also, interacting with the paper manufacturers and talking to the press.

Furthermore, the reason why the magazine publishers need to have contact with the paper manufacturers and printers are because they need to get the magazine out and so the publishers would then select a printing company and arrange delivery and collecting time.

FREEMIUMS – DIRECT DISTRIBUTION

The word Freemium comes from the words ‘Free’ and ‘Premium’. This is a method where the public are given out free issues of magazines/newspapers for example, Stylists, Shortlist and the Metro. These are generally given out in train stations and popular bus stations – where the public are at most as it would encourage the public to collect and read the magazine through their journey. These magazines make their revenue from advertising. I believe that this method of distribution is appealing as it would enable audience outside the target range to the magazine; it would increase the magazines market share.

POSTAL SUBSCRIPTION

This is a method where the readers can get the weekly/monthly magazine they want through the post and straight to their door; it would be beneficial to those to are lazy or can not find their exact magazine that they wish to have. Postal subscription is profitable as the audience would pay once a year for the weekly/monthly magazines and would reduce the hassle of buying the issues every week.

EZINES

Ezines are electronic magazines which can be found online. The advantage of having magazines distributed online is that everyone around the world would have access to read the same magazines being published in the newsagent/supermarkets. The Ezine publishers believed that it would be a great opportunity to reach an audience electronically. Having magazines online also allows the viewers to see videos and click on related links. An example of a music magazine would be RWD, as they allow viewers to read magazines online: http://rwdmag.com/issue/rwd-issue-148-autumn-2014-w-kieran-gibbs/

APPS

Many magazines have apps which would allow the audience to be updated whenever and wherever they are. This is significant as it allows the business to keep their customers and keep them informed with any excitements in which needs to be shared with the world. Moreover, most readers enjoy technology and find it easier to access things. There are also magazine apps which include interactive pages and 360-degree photos; this encourages more readers to download the app and carry out these various activities.
