Hello again, Everyone,

While Australians at home waited for news of their family members and friends who were engaged in the fighting overseas during World War One, many sought ways to honour those who fought on their behalf. This was particularly so where lives had been lost. Communities in nearly every Australian city and town erected rolls of honour, listing those who served and died, to be displayed in schools, halls, churches and in places of employment. This occurred in the small communities across our district, too. The first to be noted in the local press was Ballendella where, as early as September, 1915, a fund had been established as was reported by the Bendigonian on 9 September that year. A function had been held to farewell six local young men on their final visit home before embarking for overseas service and “During the evening donations were received towards a fund being formed to place a roll of honour in the Ballendella Hall on which the names of the local lads who have fought and fallen for freedom's cause will be engraved. The appeal was liberally responded to.”

However, the next Honour Roll reported in the local press was that to be erected by the Rochester Brass Band. At their meeting held on 11 July, 1916, as recounted in the Bendigonian on 13 July, the members “decided to provide an honour roll containing the names of the gallant bandsmen who have gone to the front. Mr. J. Armstrong (president) there-upon promised to provide the honour roll free of cost, amidst applause.”

It was not until Tuesday, 6 February, 1917, that the Echuca and Moama Advertiser and Farmers' Gazette reported that the Ballendella community had successfully completed its project: - “Honour Roll Unveiled. — The unveiling of the honour roll of the settlement took place in the Public Hall, Ballendella, on Friday night. Mr. H. Cleak presided, and Lieut. H. T. Downe unveiled the honour roll, which is of oak, and contains 33 names, nearly every family in the settlement having sent a son or bread-winner. Excellent speeches were delivered by Lieut. Downe, Messrs. H. Cleak, T. Bunbury and Williams. A nice programme of musical items was rendered by local and Rochester artists. The singing of the National Anthem concluded a pleasant gathering. During the evening Lieut. Downe said he wanted another name to make the number complete, and said he would get it before the proceedings terminated. Later, when Mr. Wesley Foster, a local settler,

who has two brothers (Corporal-Farrier Rupert Foster and Gunner Harry Foster) at the front, stepped forward in answer to Lieut. Downe's invitation there was vociferous applause.” Names listed on the Ballendella Honour Roll, as recorded in the Rochester Express on 6 February, 1917, were: - W J C Williams, H H Williams, G R Green, R F Foster, Wm Frankland, F Murrell, J Taylor, J Fletcher, J Webster, T Lowe, J Sweetman, A A Yuill, E Reddie, J Booth, A Wilson, J E Kellet, W J Ward, Geo Aitken, C J T Bunbury, H G Foster, Geo Leppard, M D Aitken, C R Hansen, R H Ponsford, T Burton, J Brunton, T Brunton, A M Gains, H J Willoughby, T M Holland, W A J Whaley, H Waterman, W J Stirling.

Just three weeks after that unveiling was reported, on 27 February, 1917, Private W J Stirling was killed in action in France. On Friday, 13 April, 1917, the Rochester Express published a description of the service held in the Ballendella Hall on 5 April, to honour his memory: - The Rev. G. Tregear undertook and arranged the proceedings, and the Rev. Slade Mallen, the Presbyterian Minister in charge of Rochester, and Mr Wheeler, of the Church of England Bamawm District, also officiated. Mrs Robert Low, of Ballendella, presided at the organ, and Mr H. Reddie accompanied on the cornet. The congregation, numbering over 80, were deeply impressed by the solemn prayers and addresses, and touching references to the dead hero, his parents, his fiancee, and her people. The music throughout was beautifully rendered, and The Last Post, by Mr Reddie on his cornet, was most impressive, the whole service being a fitting tribute of respect from the district to one who had been an esteemed resident in it, and the first from Ballendella to give his life for his King and country. Reference was made to “the very handsome and costly roll of honour bearing the names of 34 Ballendella volunteers who have already gone to the war, [which] was artistically draped in purple and white by Mrs Aitken. The board of blackwood is set in a large frame made by Mr Aitken, and rests on a dark green background, which shows off the beautiful wood and workmanship. It only arrived that week from the makers, Messrs Grundy and Co., of Brunswick, upon whom it reflected great credit. Amongst the very representative gathering present at the ceremony, it may be mentioned that Mr John Roy attended on behalf of the Water Commission, and kindly motored the Revs. Tregear and Slade Mallen to and from Ballendella.”

The Shire’s Honour Roll was still coming, and there will be more about that next time. ‘Bye,

School News

Junior Dept Over the past 3 weeks our junior students have been exploring our wonderful town, and finding out what a wonderful community we live in. Each week the students set off on foot to go exploring. Some of the places they visited were; Giddings Co Supermarket, the Heritage Complex, the Post Office, Helens takeaway, the CFA, the Business Centre, Ciurleo’s Ice Creamery and the Community Garden. The students had a fantastic time, and we really appreciate the time members of our community took to show them around. Ride to School Day Last Friday we took part in “Ride to School Day” The day is all about encouraging people to get out and get active. We must thank members of the Lockington Community Church who came to school and provided a delicious breakfast for the students. The Community Church does this annually and we value their support, so thanks again.

COLIBAN WATER FIRST WATER UTILITY IN VICTORIA TO ADOPT SMART WATER STATIONS

Joint Media Release - Coliban Water and City of Greater Bendigo

Coliban Water has partnered with the City of Greater Bendigo to install a ‘next generation’ public water bottle refill unit and drinking fountain unlike anything Bendigo, or the region, have seen before.

Coliban Water Acting Executive General Manager Insight and Innovation Amanda Finnis said the ‘MeetPat’ style unit which provides free drinking water to the community has been installed at the Tom Flood Sports Centre in central Bendigo.

“This new unit is so much more than just a water refill unit – it is truly a ‘next generation’ piece of smart technology that is fitted with an online metering system.

“This means it can provide a live usage report at any given time which is publically-available online. Since being switched on in mid-February, the new unit has reported 698 litres of water used by 1,249 people,” Ms Finnis said.

“It’s also told us that this equates to 885 disposable plastic bottles which have been saved from landfill, 74 kilograms of sugar that people have avoided consuming because they’ve chosen to drink water and 88 kilograms of Carbon Dioxide emissions that have been reduced.

“It’s a fantastic piece of equipment and this is a tangible way to track progress with our ongoing ChooseTap campaign, which encourages community members to drink tap water as part of a healthy lifestyle and as a positive alternative to bottled water.

“The water station is also helping Bendigo on its journey to becoming a smart city’,” Ms Finnis said.

City of Greater Bendigo Active and Healthy Lifestyles Coordinator Matthew Kerlin said council is always looking for ways to innovate and become smarter about providing services to the community.

The water station connects to LoraWAN networks, which stands for Long Range Wide Area Network. These networks connect low-power, low-cost, battery-operated sensors over long distances.

Council and La Trobe University Bendigo have installed the infrastructure to enable the LoraWAN network to operate in Bendigo.

“It’s fantastic to see an innovative organisation like La Trobe University partnering with Coliban Water to use the free, community network in this way,” Mr Kerlin said.

“The collection of data via the network will help Coliban Water and the City of Greater Bendigo understand how and when the water station is used so we can track the positive health benefits for community members who choose water over sugary drinks.

“This is a great example of what it means to be a smart city by helping us to understand what is happening across our city and by improving the experience of our city for residents and visitors alike,” Mr Kerlin said.

Dr Simon Egerton, who heads the Technology Innovation Lab at La Trobe University Bendigo said he is very happy to see the first organic use of the network.

“This is exactly what we were hoping for and we are looking forward to seeing more initiatives like this in the future.”

The data being collected does not include personally-identifying information and is currently available online at www.meetpat.com.au with a view to it remaining publically available in future via Coliban Water and the City of Greater Bendigo.

Further smart water stations are being considered for installation across the Greater Bendigo and Coliban Water region.

More information on LoraWAN technology can be found at https://www.meetpat.com.au/smart-cities-and-remote-monitoring/

Similar temporary water stations were set up at Lockington Reserve for the Lockington Family Wellbeing Day.

Technology Innovation Lab Head at La Trobe University Bendigo Dr Simon Egerton, Coliban Water Acting Executive General Manager Insight and Innovation Amanda Finnis, “Tap” the

ChooseTap Mascot, and City of Greater Bendigo Food Systems Officer Rebecca Huddy, with the newly installed smart water station

Locky’s Greatest Shave

Local identity, Judy Sims organised a Social Night at the Pine Grove Fire Shed on 27th March to raise money for the Leukaemia Foundation. The night included a sausage sizzle and a raffle with prizes donated by Betty Andreson’s

crafts, candles and wine from Judy’s daughters Jackie and Breanna, and Nutrimetics products from Judy herself. Kids and adults alike also had the opportunity to colour their hair for the occasion. Family and friends lined up to take turns at shaving Judy’s head down to a #2, then as a spur of the moment idea, Judy’s husband Neville offered to shave his head and moustache to a #0 if a minimum of $200 was offered for it. That didn’t take long...Grandson Archie offered up $50 from his own pocket to get a chance to shave Pop’s head! So far a total of $3,611.76 has been raised, and donations can still be received up until the end of June. If you would like to donate to this worthy cause, please contact Judy herself, or donate online at https://worldsgreatestshave.com/

Update from

an International Traveller Do you remember me? The Belgian woman who was on a mission and drove into Lockington in "the mystery van" aka "the scooby doo van" last year?

Well, I remember the community of Lockington very well as everybody has welcomed me with such an open heart. And I just wanted to give you and all the residents of Lockington a little update about me, now, one year later. I did achieve my target last year, I collected 1354 euro for Aiobheanns Pink Tie Charity. And at the place I'm working as an administration and public relations manager, we've taken a step further in supporting people batteling cancer. We've opened up a walking in house which not only facilitates complimentary therapies such as mindfulness and relaxation techniques but also gives advice, information, a shoulder to lean on and a listening ear to the caregivers, families and friends.

Beside that not a day passes by without me thinking of Australia so I can officially say that the Australian virus has caught me big time.

Last year I've crossed the world for the good cause with several challenges. This year I'm bringing the world a bit closer to Belgium with my second mission, the Crazy Crochet project.

The good cause I'm supporting now is vzw Villa Max, they donate free holiday weeks to incurably ill children and their families with all kinds of fun, connecting activities while giving the support and care that every single member of the families deserve. The organisation doesn't receive grants for this magnificent work. They organise everything with donations and selling things on Christmas markets and volunteering work. So that's why I wanted to do something for vzw Villa Max. But just like last year I wanted to do someting a little more special....

I am involved as a volunteer in the organisation and I arrange everything from reservations to the co-ordination of the special care before and during the holiday weeks. While I was crocheting a blanket for a new born baby I remembered the feedback of some parents of the ill children, they often tell me that a Villa Max week feels like a warm, caring blanket around their shoulders. So I decided I wanted to use that in my fundraising idea.

I thought to myself "if there is a record largest crocheted blanket then I will break that record". Thinking big, aiming high I guess.

And there is a record, even a world record largest crocheted blanket! When I saw the measurements of that blanket (120,001 ft² 72 in² or 11.148,50 m²) I knew I could never do it alone but at the same time I saw major possibilities of bringing people together, companies, schools, eldery homes,... , possibilities to create a sort of community, a caring community like the Lockington community.....you have no idea what the trip to Australia has given me!

I've set up a facebook page one month ago and shared it with friends and family with a call to join in and support Crazy Crochet. They shared it with their friends and families and so on and on (stille going on).....and at this very

moment 70 townships of the Dutch part of Belgium, 5 schools, 10 eldery homes, 2 psychiatric hospitals, 3 wool shops and a lot of private individuals already are crocheting blankets to create one large blanket together in an attempt to break the world record. Isn't that fantastic! On December 21th our large blanket will be presented to an offical member of the Guiness Book of World Record and will be laid on a military airport.

I will save you the details about the practical support and the one millions things I have to think about. Once the record is confirmed the blanket will be taken apart. One part of the individual blankets will be given to those in need through charities, the other part will be sold in favor of vzw Villa Max.

Crazy Crochet is like a new way of caring...

Probably I'm coming over to Australia in September/ October, of course I'll make a stop in Lockington then, I hope you appreciate this update.

Sending you all the best!

Kind regards,

Kathy

“300 WORDS” CHALLENGE We are happy to continue with our 300 Words Challenge into 2019. Please send us your articles and photos for inclusion in the paper, and receive a $10 Locky Dollars Voucher.

How to enter your article in the Challenge? Write an article 250 to 300 words in length, including the headline, email it to [email protected] with “300 Word Challenge” in the Subject line and attach at least one photo. (preference will be given to articles submitted in Word file format) Your article could be about something fun you’ve done, something funny you’ve seen, or a memory you’d like to share. We just ask that any articles are relevant to our local community, and that they are fair and not controversial. (our normal conditions of publication apply) Alternately, we are keen to include some interview style articles about some of our community volunteers. We would like to encourage readers to interview volunteers so we all get to know a bit more about who volunteers for which community groups, and some information about what they do, how long they’ve done it, and why they do it. We would like to keep all interviews to a standard format so we request everyone use the standard questionnaire which can be found on the lockingtonvic.com.au website, under the Locky News banner. All articles must show the author’s full name and contact details (address and phone number) although only your name will be published. Kids under 15 years of age must include their age.

Producers need to remain alert for blue-green algae The current seasonal conditions remain typical for blue-green algae to thrive in farm water supplies.

Victoria’s Chief Veterinary Officer, Dr Charles Milne, said livestock owners need to remain alert – blue green algae poisoning is usually seen in late summer and early autumn, and can result in poisoning of livestock, including pets.

“As there is no specific treatment for blue-green algae poisoning, producers should check farm water supplies daily for blooms, as this remains the most effective way of preventing stock deaths.

“Blue-green algal blooms typically appear as surface scum that looks like a suspension of green paint or curdled green milk, often with an earthy smell. However, the colour may range from pale green to dark brown,” Dr Milne said.

Deaths can occur when stock drink toxins produced by the blue-green algae, often when it is concentrated on the down-wind side of a water supply and has formed a dense, surface scum.

Animals that have consumed blue-green algal toxin may appear ill very rapidly, develop a staggery gait, collapse, begin to convulse and die – typically within 24 hours – depending on the toxicity of the bloom and the concentration of the toxin.

Those that do not die immediately often suffer severe liver damage. This may lead to the development of jaundice (the yellows) or photosensitisation over the next few days.

Dr Milne said those that recover from these ailments often suffer from chronic ill-thrift.

If a suspicious bloom is noticed, stock should be removed as quickly as possible, and a safe alternate water supply provided.

“Where possible producers should identify an alternative water supply, prior to their primary source of livestock drinking water being affected by a bloom. There may not be time to identify an alternative water source once the primary water supply is affected”, said Dr Milne.

“We recommend laboratory testing of the water supply for the presence of blue-green algae, and a post-mortem examination of dead or sick animals by a veterinarian.”

Blue-green algae toxins may remain on dry pasture for a long-time following irrigation, often until there is a rain event or further irrigation with uncontaminated water.

Contaminated water should not be used to irrigate vegetables and fruit or come in contact with plants being grown for food, particularly fruit and vegetables that are mostly eaten raw such as apples, grapes, tomatoes, strawberries, cabbages and other salad greens. It is also recommended to keep stock off pasture that has been irrigated with blue-green algae contaminated water for at least seven days after irrigation.

Dr Milne said dogs are also prone to poisoning as they tend to swim in farm water supplies and should be kept away from suspect water sources.

Further information on blue-green contamination in your irrigation water source or livestock water supply is available on the Agriculture Victoria website at agriculture.vic.gov.au/agriculture/farm-management/blue-green-algae-issues.

Managing livestock during challenging times Farmers can access specialist advice on livestock management through drought and dry conditions without leaving home, thanks to a series of phone seminars/webinars being delivered by Agriculture Victoria.

Each of the four one-hour seminars will focus on a key area of livestock management and will provide practical information for livestock producers, based on the latest science and best practice.

Producers can join the evening session via their phone and/or computer, tablet or smartphone.

Agriculture Victoria’s Regional Manager Meat and Wool Services, Jo Cameron acknowledged it is often difficult for farmers to take time out of their busy work days to attend events in person, so the seminars were seen as a convenient way for them to engage.

“Delivered over four consecutive weeks, the sessions will cover four key areas of livestock management including establishing stock containment areas; managing stock water supply; livestock feeding and nutrition, and pasture recovery after rain,” she said.

“Participants will have an opportunity to ask questions and discuss issues with the presenters during each session.” The presenters, who are subject experts from Agriculture Victoria, include Ian Gamble (stock containment areas), Clem Sturmfels (farm and stock water supply), Garry Armstrong (livestock feeding and nutrition) and Fiona Baker (pastures). Seminars are free and will be held from 8pm to 9pm on the following dates: 25 March – establishing a Stock Containment Area 1 April – farm and stock water supply 8 April – livestock feeding and nutrition 15 April – pasture recovery after rain

For further information or to register please go to: https://bit.ly/2CdWVX2. If you are unable to register online please phone Jo Cameron on (03) 5355 0523 or 0419 832 704 or email: [email protected]

For more information on the support available to farmers managing dry conditions and drought please visit www.agriculture.vic.gov.au/dryseasons

Now open: Water rebate for Victorian farmers Victorian livestock farmers hit by drought can now claim up to a quarter of cost of putting in more efficient water infrastructure.

The Federal Government will invest $5 million in Victoria through the On-Farm Emergency Water Infrastructure Rebate scheme, which will be run by the State.

It has been announced that eligible Victorian farmers would be able to claim up to $25,000.

This rebate will help Victorian livestock farmers to improve on-farm water infrastructure to better manage drought and dry conditions now and into the future.

As part of the $50 million On-Farm Emergency Water Infrastructure Rebate scheme, the rebate applies to new purchases and installation of pipes, water storages and water pumps, distilling dams, and associated power supplies such as generators. It will provide a 25 per cent rebate up to $25,000 for eligible water infrastructure to enhance drought resilience for farmers.

Eligible farm businesses can apply for the rebate via Rural Finance by contacting them on 1800 260 425 or visiting www.ruralfinance.com.au/

Lockington Bowls Club

Report: March 19

The women played a game of Triples on Tuesday with a great deal of talent on display. The winning team comprised Mary Thomas, Anne Lowrie and Lois Chugg (s) with daylight second. In the CVBD Week-end Pennant Grand finals, our division four teams battled valiantly against the stronger Mathoura combinations before succumbing to a 57-87 defeat. Two rinks fell just short of victory while the remaining rink had a bad day at the office. (O McPhee, P Collins, P Cunnington, B Musgrove (s) lost to R Murphy 24-25; A Harris, D Thomas, J van den Bosch, N Haines (s) l.t. T Starkey 14-39; K Stout, B Kinnane, G Shawcross, S Peter (s) l.t. G McConchie 19-23). Congratulations to Mathoura who proved too good on the day. Players and members enjoyed a relaxing evening at the clubhouse to celebrate a successful season of bowls. In the club competitions the women are playing the 100 Up championship. First round winners are Annie Haines defeating Lorraine Appleby while Annette Brereton proved too consistent for Denise Gilmore. The men’s competitions are slowly being completed. In the 100 Up championship, Kalvin Stout defeated Don Isgro to make the semi-finals. Games to be completed are Andrew Harris versus Owen McPhee, Graeme Turner v. Phillip Cunnington and Ian Johnson v. Ray Hanson. These games must be finished as soon as possible. Likewise the remaining matches in the Presidents trophy 21 Up championship. Members have travelled far and wide to local tournaments. The women enjoyed the hospitality and greens at Elmore Triples and the Rich River Villawood Fours. The men have represented the club at Tongala, Lake Boga, Leitchville and Calivil. The final night of the Sports bowls was held on Tuesday evening with a smaller but a slightly higher standard field on show. The winning team of Jacob Haines, Doug Pearse, Tom Davis, Ian Haines (s) collected the spoils with two wins plus 5 shots ahead of Carolyn Eade, Annie Haines, Jeff Carnie, Phillip Cunnington (s) 1 win / 1 loss +5 shots. Organiser Chris Stewart thanked all the new talent for supporting the three night series and trusted that they enjoyed the opportunity to learn the art of bowling. The ladies were thanked for supplying the supper over the duration. The club will hold the annual "Toyota" Open Fours this Sunday starting at 9.30am. Entries are rolling in for this special tournament. Contact Chris Stewart 5486 2607 (urgently) to save disappointment. The weekly Friday practice and meal was generously attended with Phillip Cunnington winning the lucky members draw.

Report: March 24 The women enjoyed ideal conditions for their weekly game of Social bowls. The name of the game was Triples with the winning team comprising Joy Weller, Anne Lowrie and Phyllis MacFarlane (s) in a defining game of bowls. On Sunday the club welcomed 64 bowlers to compete in the annual “Toyota” Open Fours. Clubs represented included Calivil, Bendigo, South Bendigo, Lake Boga, Rich River, Moama, City of Echuca, Mathoura, Stanhope, Tongala, Leitchville plus several members. Bowlers played on the recently renovated big green and the reports were very positive. Club President Russell Shawcross thanked the Green keeper Ian Johnson and Kevin Humbert for all their input during the huge task. After the completion of the scheduled four games of ten ends, there were three teams undefeated. Following a lengthy countback the winners were the South Bendigo rink of Jack Pell, Darren Hunter, Justin Millard, Tony Marsili (s) 65 points plus 21 shots ahead of the Leitchville team comprising Jasmine Aburrow, Jo Eagles, Tony Cantwell, Kevin Dehne (s) 62 pts +21 shots. The unlucky team was the composite rink of Russell Shawcross, David Lupton, Lal Whyte, John Dinsdale (s) 61 pts +14 shots to finish third. Special competition winners included Andy Harris, Jo Eagles (Leitchville) and Leo Swan (Lake Boga). Tournament Secretary Chris Stewart thanked the sponsors Echuca Toyota flor their ongoing support. The women were congratulated on another presentation of delightful meals on the day. Stewart also wished good bowling to Jasmine Aburrow in her quest for the upcoming BowlsVic Novice Singles to be played at the Mulgrave Country Club on Sunday 14

th April 2019.

During the week several bowlers converged on Bendigo for the Annual Country Week of bowls. Russell Shawcross and Ray Hanson competed in the Pairs and just failed to win their section while Tom Davis and Alan Kauffman won a couple of games. In the Fours played later in the week, Shawcross, Davis and Kauffman combined with Hank Jensen (White Hills) and Mick O’Connor (Bendigo East) to win four out of the five games after losing the final game by 12 shots. The team was leading the section on four wins plus 28 shots holding a 5 shot buffer and one win over their Ocean Grove opponents before the defeat. In the club competitions Andrew Harris defeated a gallant Owen McPhee in the final of the B grade championship. McPhee started the game in good form, but Harris chimed in with a brilliant display of draw bowling to power to an effortless 25-6 victory and take home the title that eluded him last year in the defeat at the hands of John van den Bosch. McPhee was far from disgraced and will improve as he gains from the experience. Games in the 100 Up championship and the Presidents Trophy 21 Up need to be completed as soon as possible. The women will hold the annual Medley Fours tournament

on Friday 12th April 2019 commencing

at 10.00am. Contact Annie Haines 5486 8220 for details. The Friday evening gathering enjoyed a fine meal and the elated Kevin Humbert won the lucky members draw.

Winners of the Toyota Fours Tournament last Sunday was South Bendigo, in which Justin Millard, a former Lockington player, was a member of the team.
