NorthropGrumman’sDistribu-ted Simulation and Stimula-tionSystem,alsoknownas

DS3,provideshighfidelitysensorsimulation for a multitude of sensors, including rotating radars; phased arrayradars;andidentification, friend or foe transponders.

DS3’s tactical environment simulator stimulatescombatsystemswithsensor, navigation and weapon systeminputs.Anadaptable,modu-larandscalableDS3architectureaccommodates emerging require-mentsbroughtaboutbytheneedtotest,trainandcertifycombatsystemevolutionsinresponsetorapidly-changingthreats.

How It WorksDS3shareshigh-fidelitysimulationsofair,surface,andballisticmissiletracksoveraDistributedInteractiveSimulation(DIS)-compliantnetworkandcommunicateswithtacticalsys-tems in real time. The DIS interface enablesadditionalDS3stoaccom-modate other interfaces or multiple platforms under test with the same simulated environment, and inter-connects with other DIS-compliant simulations.

The DS3 simulates motion and activi- ties of thousands of air and surface trackssimultaneouslyandmodels sensors and the environmental ef-fects on them. These effects include terraintrackmasking;displayand sensor effects such as track suppres- sion, multipath, ducting, and radar accuracy;cluttersuchasstormcloud, surface clutter and specular clutter(short-durationtracks).

Operators can develop simulations prior to an event via a scripted scenario file and also can control thesystemonline.Scenarioscanbecreated or modified during runtime, thensavedandreused.Multipleindi-vidualscenarioscanbeexecutedatonce,orcombinedintolarger,morecomplex scenarios.

Weapon System Simulation DS3 provides comprehensive weapon systemsimulation.Thisincludesthe FireControlSystems,VerticalLaunch SystemsandRemoteLaunchEnable Panels.DS3alsoreplicatessystemfailure faults such as missile misfires, battleshortfaults, gyrodatafaults, etc., allofwhichaddalayerofrealismfor the training and test communities. DS3 also provides a simulated wea-ponsinventorythatiseasilyrecon-figurabletosuitaspecificweaponsystem.

Vehicle Control ProgramTheVehicleControlProgram(VCP) Plug-inpresentsapseudopilotdis-playthatprovidestheoperator complete control of the aircraft. As scenario events direct, the operator takescontrolofaparticularentity(typicallyanairasset)andperformsthedirectedaction, suchasPursue,InterceptorEngage.Uponinterceptthe operator can engage a target with anappropriateweaponassignedby themotionmodeltable.TheVCPprovides accurate real-world simula-tion of range and angle limitations of specific munitions and aircraft.

Ballistic Missile Models DS3cansupportBallisticMissiletrainingandtesteventsbyproviding high-fidelityballisticmissilemodels. These models implement earth forces effectssuchasgravity,friction/dragand coriolis effects to ensure that ballisticmunitionsflyareal-worldtrajectory.Modelsincludeboththeatreandintercontinentalballisticmissilemodelsand,likeanyDS3entity,canbetailoredtosimulateparticular threats. For a near 3-D picture, the operator can monitor flighttrajectoryusingtherange/heightdisplay.

Motion Model DS3’sspreadsheet-basedmotionmodeltableprovidesexceptionalflexibilityindefiningentitiesthatcanparticipate in an event. The operator assigns characteristics of a specific entitybaseduponitsDISenumera-tion.Characteristicsincludeflightparameters such as turn and dive rates, minimum and maximum alti-tudes, and minimum and maximum speeds.Italsoincludesavailableweapons load outs and specific weapons characteristics, such as guidedorballisticmunitions.Thetableisdynamicandcanbealteredas events dictate.

Environment ControlDS3 provides comprehensive con-trol of the simulated environment. Sensor Simulation and Operator Control DS3simulatesavarietyofsensorsystemsincludingradar,IFFandEW.Theoperatorusesauser-friendlyresource tree to control and monitor each individual interface. A standard “Stop Light” color scheme provides instantfeedbackofinterfacestatus. Testing

DS3 in a Distributed EnvironmentDS3’sdistributeddesigninherently allowsforsystemgrowthandcustomization.BecauseofDS3’smodulararchitecture,newcapabili-tiesandinterfacescanbeinsertedseamlessly.Forexample,ifanewrotating radar simulation is required, thesensorunitcanbedesigned,de-veloped, integrated and tested with littleimpacttothecoredatabasesandfunctionalityofthesystem.

DS3’sscalablearchitecturemeansyouwon’toutgrowit.Additionaltransportablesystemscanbenetworked together to meet more complex architecture requirements.

DS3 can participate in large-scale distributedtestandtraininginfra-structures.ByusingDS3asthe“ground truth,” common sensor data is presented to all platforms that are DIS/HighLevelArchitecturecapable.AdditionalDS3scanbeaddedtothenetwork architecture to act as pseu-dopilot control stations. Using other NorthropGrummanconnectivitytools,suchastheGatewayManagerandtheMulti-LinkSystemTestandTraining Tool, produces a controlled closed loop test and training environment.
