IN ACTION!
WHY FLEXIBILITY MATTERS?
• Predictable customer load• Predictable customer growth• Consistent generation levels
Traditional(Historical)
40+ Year Baseload AssetsTraditional Power Plants
Flexible(Future)
• Energy Efficiencyo Equipment using less energyo Declining use per customer
• More Potential for Renewableso Intermittency in generationo Renewables serving off-peak hours
• New technologies on the horizon
Need Ability to AdaptFlexible Generation Path
WHAT ARE WE DOING?

SOLAR+STORAGE PROJECT
5 MW AC Solar PV Facility 10 MW Battery Storage System
• Energy Storage System (ESS) co-located with solar production
• Application: Solar shifting and Fast Responding Regulation Service (FRRS)
• Flexible configuration
• 10 MW FRRS with 1 hour duration
• 5 MW stored energy with 2 hour duration
PV+BESS PARTNERSHIP
• SwRI ‐ Research Opportunities
• CPS Energy – Renewable Energy, Reduced Emissions, Operational Experience, Flexible Path
• Both parties – Community Recognition, Data Sharing
SOLAR LAYOUT
Highly visible site located along the Highway 151 corridor
PV+BESS PARTNERSHIP
NEW TECHNOLOGY IMPLEMENTATION GRANT (NTIG)
• Improve the quality of air in Texas
• Facilitate the implementation of new technologies to reduce emissions
• Fund implementation of new technologies while creating new business and industry
CPS Energy was awarded $3M to partially offset the ESS cost
LESSONS LEARNED
• CPS Energy formed a cross‐functional Technical Advisory Team– Direct Buried Cable– Communication Access– Resource Meter– Switchgear – Resiliency– String Inverter
STRING INVERTER
• Technical team approved use of string inverters in centralized design
• Benefits:• O&M does not require specialized
training. Inverter can easily be sent back to factory for repair/replacement
• Higher energy production due to (1) increased flexibility for design optimization (2) more inverters (more MPPTs) reduce losses from partial site shading
