The Distinguished Diplomat Lecture SeriesFree to the public, the Distinguished Diplomat Lecture Series offers a unique opportunity to gain valuable insights from a revered Foreign Service Officer. As the program’s flagship event, this biennial lecture takes place in the spring and showcases the key role that the U.S. Foreign Service plays in foreign affairs.
Thomas Pickering’s service as U.S. Ambassador in each of the major continents earned him the rank of Career Ambassador, the U.S. Foreign Service’s highest accolade. His career is distinguished by service in Russia, India, Israel, El Salvador, Nigeria and
Jordan. Additionally, the New York Times has praised him as “arguably the best-ever senior U.S. representative” to the United Nations.
In addition to more than four decades of public service, Ambassador Negroponte was twice awarded the State Department’s Distinguished Service Medal. President Bush also awarded Ambassador Negroponte the National Security Medal
for his outstanding contributions to U.S. national security.
Giving GuideTo continue inspiring future Distinguished Diplomats we must raise an endowment of $500,000, which will generate annual program revenues to fund the Distinguished Diplomat Lecture Series and its ancillary programs. Core ComponentsDistinguished Diplomat Lecture Series—as the program’s flagship event, this biennial lecture takes place in the spring and showcases the key role that the U.S. Foreign Service plays in foreign affairs. Each lecture brings a revered former U.S. ambassador to speak on our most critical foreign policy issues.
Issues Briefings Series—throughout the year, experts and diplomats present their insights on breaking international issues such as the Arab Spring, China’s rise, and the Eurozone crisis.
Mentoring—Professor Emeritus William Cunningham and Assistant Professor Richard Sindelar, both former career diplomats, advise students on careers within the State Department, NGO’s and multinational corporations.
Career presentations—active diplomacy practitioners from various agencies are invited to discuss the keys to success in their careers.
Center for International StudiesThe Center for International Studies at the University of St. Thomas is Texas’ most experienced degree-granting center of its kind. We have pioneered educational excellence in the field of international studies for more than 30 years. With courses focused in diplomacy, an extensive study abroad program, an innovative Social Entrepreneurship Program and the ability to advise students in diplomacy careers, the Center for International Studies is the backbone of the Distinguished Diplomat Program.
American Foreign Service AssociationThe American Foreign Service Association established its first-ever university partnership with the University of St. Thomas’ Distinguished Diplomat Program in 2012. The Speaker’s Bureau, one of the American Foreign Service Association’s most effective outreach programs, assists the Distinguished Diplomat Lecture Series by selecting and providing outstanding Foreign Service speakers.
