The Academy at Smith - Medical CareersThe Academy at Smith’s Medical Careers program is designed for students who are interested in a career as a healthcare professional. Students are introduced to the health field, the concepts of personal, family and community health and disease control through classroom instruction, case studies, hands-on activities, interactive computer modules and internships.

Medical Careers students will learn:

• Anatomy and physiology of the heart, lungs, brain, musculoskeletal system, digestive system, kidneys and immune system

• Risk factors for diseases of the heart, lungs, brain, musculoskeletal system, digestive system, kidneys and immune system

• Tools for the diagnosis of diseases related to the heart, lungs, brain, musculoskeletal system, digestive system, kidneys and immune system

• Behaviors that keep the systems of the body healthy

• Healthcare career options related to each system of the body

In addition, students will learn through the use of equipment including:

• Tympanic and digital thermometers

• Stethoscopes

• Blood Pressure Monitors

• Otoscopes and Ophthalmoscopes

• Realistic models of the heart, brain, lungs, kidneys, eyes and skeleton

In Medical Careers II and Medical Sciences II, students, under the supervision of their teacher, are required to complete an internship in which they work with actual patients in a medical facility.

The National Health Care Skill Standards are incorporated into the curriculum for Medical Careers. Students completing the Academy course of study for Medical Careers II or Medical Sciences II are prepared to enter post-secondary programs leading to the many and varied careers in the medical field.

CNA I SkillsDuring Medical Careers II, students must master more than 60 individual patient care skills with 100 percent accuracy and successfully pass a written exam to qualify as a Certified Nursing Assistant I.

Medical Careers students may complete their high school courses by the end of their junior year and begin taking college courses during their senior year in high school.

Electrical Construction TechnologyThe Academy at Smith’s Construction Technology program is designed for students who are interested in one of the many and varied careers within the construction industry.

Construction Technology students will:

• Develop entrepreneurial skills through project activities that require blueprint interpretation, job estimation and compliance to specifications and codes such as OSHA1, NEC2, NEMA3 and NFPA4

• Apply knowledge and skills while participating in Service Learning projects, such as Habitat for Humanity

• Explore principles, concepts and use of complex graphic tools used in the field of architecture, structural systems and construction trades

• Practice workplace safety skills including proper use of personal protective equipment, lockout procedures, grounding and isolation and working in elevated areas

• Develop hands-on skills using common hand tools and specialized tools specific to the electrical construction profession. Specialized tools include volt/ohm meters, continuity testers and conduit benders

• Develop an understanding of materials and components specific to the electrical construction profession, such as conduit, raceways, junction boxes and service panels

• Apply mathematical and algebraic principles to solve practical problems related to the construction field

This program offers the foundation of knowledge and skills necessary to embark on a career in the construction industry. Students learn the introductory skills of construction, electrical technology and blueprint reading through classroom instruction, hands-on activities, interactive computer modules, student projects and practical work experiences. Students will learn to manage resources, work cooperatively, organize and use information, understand complex systems and apply appropriate technology.

Major outcomes for the Construction Technology student:

• Develop basic skills needed to embark on a career or continued education in construction management through a combination of laboratory experiences and work-based learning experiences

• Provide technical information (principles and theory) with emphasis on the application of communications, mathematics, design, economics, science and computer skills relative to future education and employment in construction management

• Prepare students for further education in two- or four-year degree programs or for entry into the workforce with marketable skills

You Make the Decision!The Academy at Smith was developed to provide relevance, rigor and much-needed relationships for students who are eager to distinguish themselves from the competition. Our goal is to ensure that students receive a world-class education while gaining advanced training in a choice of one of two pathways: Medical Careers or Construction Technology. Students will complete core subject area classes and requirements for a high school diploma. Those in the program may earn dual credits during their senior year at Guilford Technical Community College (GTCC), which may be transferred to other colleges and universities, or they may graduate from high school in three years and apply to a college of their choice.

The Academy at Smith builds on the math and science foundation with an opportunity for students to gain practical experience and dual enrollment in both high school and college courses. Academy students will graduate with the competitive edge needed to be successful in a new global economy!
