BEFORE USE

Introduction

Thank you for purchasing the VA-1835 DisplayPort protocol analyzer. This manual describes the operation procedures to be followed when using the product as well as the precautions and other points to be observed during operation. Before operating the products, be absolutely sure to read through the manual since improper handling of the product may lead to malfunctioning and/or accidents. After having read through the manual, store it in a safe place for future reference when needed.

Safety precautions WARNING

Concerning the protocol analyzer

■ Refrain from subjecting the product to strong impact and from throwing it down. Doing so may cause product malfunctioning, rupturing, heat generation and/or a fire.

■ Do not use the product wherever there is a risk of ignition or explosion.

■ The product contains some high-voltage parts. Touching them may result in electric shocks, burns and/or malfunctioning so do not attempt to disassemble, repair or remodel the product yourself.

■ If there is a thunderstorm while the product is being used outdoors, turn off its power immediately, disconnect the power cable from the product body, and move the product to a safe place.

Concerning the power cable

■ Be absolutely sure to pull the molded plug when disconnecting the power cable.

■ Do not forcefully bend the power cable or use it bundled up. Doing so may cause a fire.

■ Do not place heavy objects on top of the power cable. Doing so may damage the cable and cause a fire and/or electric shocks.

Concerning foreign matter

■ Do not spill liquids inside the product or drop inflammable or metal objects into it. Using the product with these substances inside it can cause a fire, an electric shock and/or malfunctioning.

Caution

v

Page 10: DisplayPort Protocol Analyzer VA-1835

Concerning the product

■ When connecting the product to another device (such as a monitor or personal computer), connect it using the accessory FG cable, etc. so that the device and VA-1835 share the same frame ground (FG) connection. Use without a shared FG connection may cause the product to malfunction.

Figure FG connector connections

Concerning installation

■ Install the product in a stable location. Do not install it in the vertical position. Doing so may result in the generation of heat, causing the product’s temperature to rise and possibly resulting in the breakdown of the product.

Concerning liquid crystal

■ The properties of liquid crystal are such that some pixels (such as lighted dots and flashing dots) may be missing.

■ Do not touch liquid crystal which has leaked from the liquid crystal panel. If the liquid crystal panel has been accidentally damaged and the liquid (liquid crystal) inside it has leaked, do not ingest it, inhale it or allow it to get on your skin. In the event that liquid crystal has gotten into your eyes or mouth, immediately rinse with water. If it is on your skin or clothing, immediately wipe it off with alcohol, for example, and rinse if off using soap. If it is allowed to remain in place, it may damage your skin or clothing.

■ Take care with the glass shards from a broken liquid crystal panel. If the liquid crystal panel has been damaged, take care not to cut your hands or any other parts of your body on the glass shards. You may injure yourself if you touch the cut surfaces.

vi

Page 11: DisplayPort Protocol Analyzer VA-1835

BEFORE USE

■ The liquid crystal panel is made to extremely high standards of precision so observe the following checkpoints when handling it.

・ Wiping the panel with benzene, paint thinners or other solvents may cause deterioration. ・ Leaving water (salt water) on the panel may result in discoloration and/or staining. ・ Leaving the panel directly exposed to ultraviolet rays for prolonged periods of time may turn the deflection plate

brown, reduce the contrast and compromise the display quality in other ways as well. ・ Uneven colors may result if condensation or other forms of moisture are allowed to enter inside the product. ・ Directly hitting the panel or knocking it against objects may cause cracking, etc. ・ Do not attempt to disassemble the product since it is dangerous if you allow leaking liquid crystal to get on your skin.

When an error or trouble has occurred

■ In the event that an error or trouble has occurred, disconnect the power cable, and contact your dealer or an Astrodesign sales representative.

11 Concerning the VA-1835

1.1 Overview The VA-1835 DisplayPort protocol analyzer (hereafter referred to as the “VA-1835”) makes it possible to check out the protocol sections which are required in the development of the DisplayPort transmitter. It allows the DisplayPort images and sounds to be checked with ease using its front LCD monitor and internal speaker. Furthermore, since the performance information (EDID, DPCD) of the VA-1835 main unit can be rewritten, it allows many different kinds of receivers (monitors) to be imagined. By passing data through the DISPLAYPORT output connector, the VA-1835 can also be used as an AUX line monitor. The VA-1835 generation function makes it possible to check the reception of signals from a sink unit. For the purposes of this manual, monitors, TV sets and other units which are provided with a DisplayPort input connector but not with a DisplayPort output connector are collectively referred to as receivers (monitors) while units which are provided with both DisplayPort input and output connectors and which output signals on the basis of the input signals are collectively referred to as repeaters.

1.2 Features Analysis (measurement) functions

DisplayPort video timings measured DisplayPort packet contents measured Differences from DisplayPort ratings checked

Receiver (monitor) functions

Reception of DisplayPort input signals enabled

Through function

By passing the input and output signals straight through the A-1835, the direct transfer of AUX line signals of source units and sink units can be checked.

1

Page 14: DisplayPort Protocol Analyzer VA-1835

Generation function

Using the timing data incorporated inside the VA-1835 and a number of patterns, this function makes it possible to check the reception of signals from a sink unit.

Emulation function

This function makes it possible to change the performance information of the VA-1835 main unit into the performance of other different monitors.

Built-in LCD monitor and speaker

The front LCD monitor makes it easy to check 8-bit, 10-bit and 12-bit DisplayPort images. Similarly, the internal speaker makes it easy to check the linear PCM sound.

Programming functions

The data used when imaging a monitor can be controlled in the form of programs. Simply by calling a program, it is possible to easily change to the performance of different kinds of monitors. A group function for picking out only those programs to be used from among a large number of programs is also available.

Recording of data into USB flash memory

The analysis (measurement) data, programs, installation settings and other data can be stored in a USB flash memory.

Hot plug function

This function makes it possible to initiate reset for a transmitter without disconnecting and reconnecting the cables between the transmitter and VA-1835.

Log trigger function

This enables triggers to be set to capture the analysis data.

Line monitor function

This enables the transmission and reception of commands using the AUX line to be verified.
