MARCH 2011 VOLUME 29 #2
disPATCHer
A professional quilt designer, author, and
teacher, Janet has penned the delightful books
Quilts for Chocolate Lovers and Quilts for Ice Cream
Lovers published by AQS. Even though she loves
designing, Janet's first love is teaching. Her light-
hearted approach to quilting makes her classes fun
and exciting. Her designs have been featured in
McCall's Quilting, McCall’s Quick Quilts, Traditional Quilter and
several other publications. Janet also has a quilt on permanent display
in the library of Beijing, China. Janet’s workshop on Thursday will
be the Blueberries and White Chocolate pattern.

Great Guild, Great Speakers!
Tammie Bowser, Wow! Weren’t her quilts amazing? I don’t know about the
other guild members that took her workshop, but I took a leap of faith and just
did what she said. Put those little pieces of fabric on the corresponding squares
and it will work out. She was absolutely right. After placing the last square I
hung it up on the wall, stood back and couldn’t believe my eyes. I know what
Tammie meant when she did her first one and had to show it to somebody, any-
body, even the neighbor! I must say this is the first quilt I’ve made that was so
easy and amazing. I want to make another one. Right Now!
We have such a great guild! The members are so fantastic and creative. At every
meeting we see such wonderful quilts at Show and Tell. We get to see and hear
from some of the best speakers and teachers of our time. When you look around
the perimeter of the room you see guild members that have taken on a job to
make our guild and our meetings even better. These jobs may be small or large
projects but everyone pitches in to make us great.
Welcome to our many new members. While you are getting your bearings, meet-
ing new friends and figuring out where your place might be in this new group
you have joined, we’d like to ask for your help.
Right now we need a little time from all of our members to help with the Auc-
tion and Tea, scheduled for October 8. You know that old saying, ―many hands
makes light work,‖ is so true.
Can you spare a few hours to help set up the room or hang quilts or clean up on
the day of the Auction? What about taking in donation items at the guild meet-
ings to put in raffle baskets? Does your creative flair extend to table decorations?
Does your inner ―engineer‖ kick in when it comes to figuring out where to put
things or set up a room? Come out and make new friends while helping keep
those wonderful speakers coming to our guild.
I remember when I first joined the guild before I retired and I volunteered to cre-
ate a program that listed all the donated quilts and who made them. It didn’t take
a lot of my time but was very appreciated. I know you’ll find it rewarding too.

ROUND ROBIN:
CENTER BLOCKS DUE AT MARCH MEETING
Here are the instructions for the Round Robin quilts:
Bring a 12 ½ to 15 ½ inch block in a zip lock bag to me at the beginning of the March meeting.
The block can be any style, any technique and any fabrics you wish. Please include your extra fabric so
that the borders will have some continuity and save some fabric for yourself to finish the edges. See me
at the break and you will receive someone else’s block and a label for you to sign.
You will add a border and bring back the block to the next meeting.
You may match, coordinate with, or accent the exciting colors in the center block, keeping in mind its
basic theme. The guidelines are simple and are included with each bag.
March -- Squares
April -- Triangles
May -- Rectangles
June -- Final border setting
This repeats in April, May, June, August (No meeting in July).
In August you will receive your original block, plus borders and a signed label back, transformed
into a beautiful wall hanging or small quilt.
You can then add more borders or bind it. The final borders will be due in August.
If you have any questions or concerns please feel free to call me at 714 -776-7805 or email me
at [email protected]. ~ Sally Lansing

When you haven't quite got the exact
match for your thread, do you
choose the darker thread or the lighter
thread?
Answer: Always choose the
darker thread. It will blend in much better than the light one.
T hank you everyone for your support of our 2-month fundraiser. We
will draw the winning ticket at our March meeting.
This is entitled 1/2 Hawaiian and 1/2 Not; Aloha Elly; and Baltimore Meets
Honolulu!!
The maker of the top is unknown. I hand quilted the Hawaiian blocks in the
traditional manner for those and used a grid format for the other 2. It turned
out really nice and you all seem to like it. ~ Barbara Purks

At January's meeting we announced that we were running low on fabrics and trims. We
take your castoffs and sell them to support our guild budget. This has been a great source
of revenue, so we encourage you to continue downsizing your stash of fabrics and trims.
Your unwanted items bring miles and miles of smiles to others! We'll be getting leftovers
from the Hog Holler Aukshun in April, but we can always use more. And who knows,
you'll probably find some of your fabric in a quilt one day! ~ Bobbie, Linda & Donna
WANTED: FABRICS AND TRIMS
Quilts wrap our hearts in warm emotions. They represent time, energy and plan-
ning. The hours required to create a quilt offer plenty of opportunity to think
about the person for whom it is intended….A quilt bridges the generation gap
by connecting people from the past with people yet to come.
~ Mary Tatem, The Quilt of Life, 2000.

T hanks for all your help and support! We had 23 pillowcases and 18 finished
quilts and tops turned in this month. As always, all the pillowcase kits were picked
up.
A small group stayed for the after-guild sew-in and we accomplished a lot. We
made pillowcase kits, pieced quilt backs and added borders to too-small quilts. We
then sandwiched 23 more quilts. We also had people cutting squares and building
quilt kits. Needless to say, we now have over 70 quilts that need quilting. This is
our biggest need, so please pick one up next month and practice your quilting skills
on our quilts.
Saturday we delivered 22 quilts to a refurbished home for veterans in Garden Grove. The home will be very
nice when completed. The organization doing the work is ―Furnishing Hope,‖ which we have worked with
before. ~ Carol Munn & Carol Howerton
