“This Editorial was shot in New York for W25 Magazine. I used a variety of Westcott gear to create my images including two 18"x42" Bruce Dorn Select Asymmetrical Stripbanks. One strip was placed to light the background, while the other was placed above the model and used as a hairlight. Just below the hairlight I placed a Westcott Triflector to catch all fall off light and highlight the model’s accessories.”

“It’s a well known fact that the bigger the light source you are using while shooting the softer the light it produces. It’s also known that the closer this light source is in relation to your subject the bigger it gets in relation to your subject. That means that in many cases you can use a relatively small light source and make it “bigger” by moving it closer to the model.

Nothing is wrong with that, apart from the fact that sometimes this may limit your creativity when you want to take a wide shot and don’t want to include the light in the picture. This was the case when I shot Marie Melnikova against the sunset. In a situation like this, you want to use a light source big enough that you can place it far from your subject, capture the sunset and the horizon and still produce a soft and flattering light.

The Westcott 50" Apollo is the perfect modifier for this purpose. As you can see in this setup shot, its huge dimension enables you to place it outside of the frame without compromising

“The challenge for any wedding dress is to get detail! I chose to use a small 16" x 22" softbox with a barn door to feather the light off her arm for the main light. I used one more below it to add some highlights to the front of the dress and to block it off. I placed a chair in front of the light to perform as a pattern gobo. Then, I used a 36" x 48" softbox to my left for fill. What I like about the Spiderlite® TD5 and TD6 is that I can change the lamps to tungsten to match the lights behind this bride.”

“These images are from an ad campaign for a Toronto-based fashion design firm, Jessica Rose Design, and her label, “A Resurrection of Romance.“ Her style is classic yet modern. She wanted an old European look to the images, so I shot them in black-and-white in Downtown Historic Toronto. My set was simple—available sunlight with a 6-in-1 Reflector by Westcott®. All images were shot on a Hasselblad H4D lens of choice HC 2.8 \ 80 mm.”

“Gianina is one of my favorite kids and she’s also a great model, so when she needed a new portrait for her Facebook page I offered to take the shot. It was easy to set up a place to shoot in my small living room because the Home Studio lights are daylight balanced fluorescent bulbs that are cool to the touch. I could place them close to her without worrying about any discomfort. We decided to create a colorful scene with a pink backdrop, a red blouse, and purple flowers. I hung the fabric behind Gianina to cover up the fireplace, positioned her on the floor, set up my Home Studio lights, and experimented with adding a reflector to eliminate shadows under her eyes. The result was a striking, colorful headshot that portrays her personality.”

TIPS FOR CHOOSING A LIGHTMany times power is the deciding factor for choosing a light. However, understanding how much power you are actually getting can be confusing. At Westcott, we made it simple by creating Actual Meter Reading (AMR).

No second guessing what you will actually get once you take the product out of the box as output is measured using a simple and straightforward system. Lights are placed in a completely dark room with no artificial light. A 24" x 32" softbbox is attached and light is metered at 3'.

“This Editorial was shot in New York for W25 Magazine. I used a variety of Westcott gear to create my images including two 18"x42" Bruce Dorn Select Asymmetrical Stripbanks. One strip was placed to light the background, while the other was placed above the model and used as a hairlight. Just below the hairlight I placed a Westcott Triflector to catch all fall off light and highlight the model’s accessories.”

“It’s a well known fact that the bigger the light source you are using while shooting the softer the light it produces. It’s also known that the closer this light source is in relation to your subject the bigger it gets in relation to your subject. That means that in many cases you can use a relatively small light source and make it “bigger” by moving it closer to the model.

Nothing is wrong with that, apart from the fact that sometimes this may limit your creativity when you want to take a wide shot and don’t want to include the light in the picture. This was the case when I shot Marie Melnikova against the sunset. In a situation like this, you want to use a light source big enough that you can place it far from your subject, capture the sunset and the horizon and still produce a soft and flattering light.

The Westcott 50" Apollo is the perfect modifier for this purpose. As you can see in this setup shot, its huge dimension enables you to place it outside of the frame without compromising

“The challenge for any wedding dress is to get detail! I chose to use a small 16" x 22" softbox with a barn door to feather the light off her arm for the main light. I used one more below it to add some highlights to the front of the dress and to block it off. I placed a chair in front of the light to perform as a pattern gobo. Then, I used a 36" x 48" softbox to my left for fill. What I like about the Spiderlite® TD5 and TD6 is that I can change the lamps to tungsten to match the lights behind this bride.”

“These images are from an ad campaign for a Toronto-based fashion design firm, Jessica Rose Design, and her label, “A Resurrection of Romance.“ Her style is classic yet modern. She wanted an old European look to the images, so I shot them in black-and-white in Downtown Historic Toronto. My set was simple—available sunlight with a 6-in-1 Reflector by Westcott®. All images were shot on a Hasselblad H4D lens of choice HC 2.8 \ 80 mm.”

“Gianina is one of my favorite kids and she’s also a great model, so when she needed a new portrait for her Facebook page I offered to take the shot. It was easy to set up a place to shoot in my small living room because the Home Studio lights are daylight balanced fluorescent bulbs that are cool to the touch. I could place them close to her without worrying about any discomfort. We decided to create a colorful scene with a pink backdrop, a red blouse, and purple flowers. I hung the fabric behind Gianina to cover up the fireplace, positioned her on the floor, set up my Home Studio lights, and experimented with adding a reflector to eliminate shadows under her eyes. The result was a striking, colorful headshot that portrays her personality.”

TIPS FOR CHOOSING A LIGHTMany times power is the deciding factor for choosing a light. However, understanding how much power you are actually getting can be confusing. At Westcott, we made it simple by creating Actual Meter Reading (AMR).

No second guessing what you will actually get once you take the product out of the box as output is measured using a simple and straightforward system. Lights are placed in a completely dark room with no artificial light. A 24" x 32" softbbox is attached and light is metered at 3'.
