NEW YORK June 2014 Today, Amenia has just one stoplight and one

shopping center. It has old dair y farms and amostly abandoned state facility serving people withdevelopmental disabilities.

Looking back over the past 300 years sincethe rst settlers began to arrive from nearbyConnecticut and New England, we see a typicalpicture of enthusiastic farmers and businessmen

who came to the wooded hills to clear the land andbuild homes, churches and communities. Manyeveryday events have occurred within its 43-square-mile area in one of the three major valleys

The buildings on the other side of FountainSquare remain much the same today. The fountainin the square was originally a water drinkingplace for the horses. This is the center of the oldhamlet called Paynes Corners. Once the Dutchess

Turnpike (Route 44) was built in 1805 theincreased trafc caused a building boom.

For years, residents have jokinglyexplained the events, doingsand personalities in their townwith a single phrase: Only in Amenia!

of events, places and buildingsthat are unique and people whoare extraordinary. There are some

that are so outstanding, in fact, that being described as only in

Amenia is not a joke, but a greatcompliment.

The rst of Amenias one-of-a-kind features is the view fromDeLaVergne Hill on Route 44,looking south to the Wassaichamlet. From that point, visitorssee the Silo Ridge golf course, nowbeing completely updated. Much ofthe hamlet of Amenia is visible, as

well as a horse farm and several olddairy farms. The small lake on thegolf course is an old iron ore bed,now ooded. And in the distance,

The view from DeLaVergneHill, without question, is the mostbeautiful view in Dutchess County, and it is only in Amenia.

At the bottom of DeLaVergneHill is the center of the hamlet of

Amenia. Surprisingly, it is not atypical New England-style town, but a Victorian village dating fromthe second half of the 19th century. Many of the buildings were builtafter the Harlem Railroad camethrough that valley.

There are several estates in Amenia, including WetherseldFarm, that welcome visitors. Once

There were two storesand houses with two addresses(one in each state). There werealso two blacksmiths sincehorse and carriage was the maintransport at that time. AmeniaUnion was noted for producingthe famous Buckley farm plow.

Of the some eight majorhamlets (the settlements that hadtheir own post of ces), Wassaic

auditorium. During one meeting, resident and part-time musicianPeter Cascone, sitting in theaudience, had a different vision.

Hey, this is a nice stage, thisshould be a venue, he said, recalling the thought.

Eventually, the soon-to-beproducer wrote his proposal andcame up with a name: the AmeniaMusic Hall. By 2012, Peter CasconeProductions and Amenia settled ona license agreement.

Technically, the concert hallhas already seen its start, thoughperhaps a premature one. After

three concerts, those behind themusic, including Cascone, a few Town Board members and evenSilo Ridge, have put the project onhiatus for some major renovations,

namely restoring aged bathrooms, repairing a leaky roof, installinga heating and cooling systemand, most relevantly, improvingacoustics.

Testing the waters did meet with productivity though, in theproducers perspective. He said therst concert, in March 2013, was a

hit. The second one, that June, wasless so, but still, it gave the musichall team a frame of reference forsuccess. Accordingly, the thirdconcert, this March, drew back

to the bluegrass, troubadour andamenco focus of the rst and wasvery popular.

However, one problemoverwhelmed, a problem severe

when considering the context: theunsuitable acoustics.

Spirits not as high as theyonce were, a little fortune fell

into play when Silo Ridge FieldClub happened to clear out theirclubhouse, donating sundry goodsto various entities.

A conversation with TownHistorian Arlene Iuliano addressedsome of Amenias more unusualroad names. Iuliano said one thatsalways interested her is Yellow CityRoad, which is in the Leedsvillehamlet of Amenia.

    According to her, there were

sulfur springs in the area, lendingto its yellow color and referenceto the region as the yellow city.

A map by Amenia resident MyronBenton, done between 1856 and1858, referenced the road. TheBentons were one of the most

historical families in the area,Iuliano said.

The whole area was called Yellow City, she said, and it lednot quite all the way to the sulfursprings, and that seems to be wherethe name Yellow City Road wasderived from. Leedsville was the

center of a very, very developedarea of the time. In fact, theythought it would be the center ofthe town of Amenia at one time.

Leedsville Road connects fromRoute 343 heading toward Sharon,Conn., all the way to Prospect Road

on Depot Hill. Iuliano said YellowCity Road was different from otherstreet names in that it wasnt namedafter a family or a direction.

Most of the names of the roadeither took a family name thatlived there or the name of MainStreet or the section of town, likeNorth or South street. But thisone seems to have been derivedfrom that particular happening, she said, adding the sulfur springs

were on the edge of the Oblong Valley mountain range borderingConnecticut and can likely be foundon a map.

Another name Iuliano is fondof is Powder House Road, but thatroads origin, she said, remains amystery.

A Road Map of AmeniaBy Whitney Joseph

The town of Amenia is rich with history. It was formallyorganized more than 300 years ago, in 1704. Since that timethe town and its residents have been naming roadways public

and private lending both direction and personality to a placeknown to be as unique as it is beautiful.

I dont know where thatname is derived from, she said, adding roads today continue to beintroduced. There are town roadsand private roads named for 911.

The 911 roads have signs which are white with green letters; the townroads have white letters with greensigns.

These days Powder House is atown road, though Iuliano said thatmight not have always been thecase.

Another name of interest isSinpatch Road, which heads offRoute 22 and winds its way to Bog

Hollow Road in Wassaic. That road, said Iuliano, has a great historybehind it. Fascinating, she said, though simple.

Another legend is that a localminister was the one who named itSinpatch, based on the reputationof an especially naughty family wholived in a patch of sin, accordingto Iuliano.

I think its a reection of thehistory of the times, because thats

what people did. They namedthings for how they felt, so thereare a variety of names that aredifferent, though that variety is

less than using family names ordirections, especially over here inthe more rural side of the county, she said. People expressed theirfeelings, even in the names of theirroads. Its not unusual for them tocome up with something like this.

An example of a private roadnamed after a family is Folan Road,

which connected what was once thePalmer farmland on Cascade Roadto Perrys Corners Road. That was inthe mid-1900s, according to Iuliano.

To me the road belonged to theproperty owner and was namedafter the Folans, the only people

who lived there, she said.Iuliano added that a lot of

Amenias roads were named beforeRoute 22 was built, creating a mazeof roads throughout the town.

    But its interesting that some

names did not change over many, many years, and that we still havethem today, she said. Theytended, especially if they werefarms, to have the last name of thefamily. Nowadays youll see theyuse rst names, like Anns Road or

Joyces Road, but that doesnt meananything as far as history goes.

Roads continue to be named in Amenia, as they are constructed. As Iuliano said, a majority of themtend to be private roads these days, leading to private homes or farms.

When thats the case they can beas creative, or not, as the propertyowner desires.

    So while driving around Amenia

why not keep your eyes open forsome interesting street signs andon the road, of course you neverknow what youll discover!

Now in its fth season, the Amenia Farmers Market hosts a variety of local artisans and farmers, each of them sharing with thecommunity their homegrown foodsand homemade crafts.

The market opened in thesummer of 2010 with just half adozen vendors. Having a market wasthe idea of Rudy Eschbach, owner-operator of Cedar Hill Farm in

Amenia. Apparently, gathering localfarmers and artisans was necessarybecause there were very few outletsfor small town farmers to share theirgoods.

There wasnt a place for local

farmers to get together and sharetheir products, Eschbach said, so

we came together and started ourown.

Now, you can nd more than 15 vendors at the farmers market, heldall year long.

The market is dedicated to thesale of wholesome, fresh food,Eschbach said.

He has been participating in the

market since its beginning, andhe said not only does the marketmeet its goal, it also brings peopletogether, promotes a sense ofcommunity and gives farmers anopportunity to meet the people

buying their products.Talking with the customers is

one of my favorite parts, Eschbachsaid. The customers always ask,

Is this organic? Like EschbachsBlack Angus beef and pork, mostproducts sold are organic, grassfed, free of antibiotics and growthhormones.

Pattie Camillone is the owner-operator of WholeyOats Granola.

As the name suggests, she sellsgranola and granola bars made withnatural ingredients, such as wholegrain oats, axseed meal, maplesyrup and honey. Shes one of theoriginal vendors who participated inthe market following its conception. For Camillone, the farmers marketserved as a springboard to get

    WholeyOats recognized by thecommunity.
