The east entrance of the school lacks interest, and there is a missed opportunity to make a statement about our school. Through our site marker, we intend to portray the school as a place for stu-dents to find direction, acceptance, and insight into their own lives and creative processes. We also want to express the creative spirit of experimentation, expression, and exploration. It will serve as a reminder of these values to students, as well as a clear communi-cator the public as to what we value as a school and a community.

Design Problem

The east entrance features a large lawn space that lends itself to the opportunity to house an installation piece. It would also need to work cohesively with the already existing sculpture in the area. We are planning on using a similar metal, maybe the wood featured on the side of the Painting building nearby. We would like to make the sculpture big enough to allow the audience to interact with it. The campus currently has a nice balance of modern and organic fea-tures, and we would like to stay consistent with that theme.

Site Assessment

Our inspiration is a piece by an artist we both admire, Stefan Sag-meister. His bold, thoughtful piece entitled Complaining is Silly, Ei-ther Act or Forget grabs the viewer’s attention and holds it with its large scale, bright color, expressive type, and use of reflective materials. We wanted to pull a few of these attributes into our own piece, but at the same time keep the piece consistent with the aes-thetic of the school.

Inspiration

In our installation, we wanted to focus on the idea of discovery. We feel that this school promotes self-discovery by creating an open, accepting environment as well as allowing exploration in a wide array of mediums in order to find individual voice. We wanted to portray this idea in image, form, and concept. The text placed on the face of the series of sculptures will read “discovery,” but the transparent reflectivevinyl the letter forms will be cut from will further promote this idea. The viewer will have to position themselves in relation to a light source in order to fully view the message, and in a sense “discovering” the piece.
