EMERGENCY RESPONSE IN POST DISASTER PERIOD

There are many organizations in Bangladesh which work in post disaster response period. In this presentation, we will present the four organization’s activities. We have tried hard solely to know about their activities.

These are- 1.CNRS

2.World Vision3.CDMP

4.European Union

Role of CNRS response in post disaster period

The Center for Natural Resource Studies emphasize on Post Disaster Response for 11 upazilla under the district of Sunamganj. The Center for Natural Resource Studies work for flood, flash flood, Seasonal flood and landslide also.

This organization arrange a three days training program for local volunteer. If they want to work the affected area, they need to Government permission.

At first they make an initial report on affected community and they include in their report how many people injured, died, more vulnerable, disabled, children, pregnant mother, losses of property and immediate needs of the community.

Cont. CNRS works in post disaster response for the affected community to minimize impacts of disasters through the following activities-

o Disaster Assessmento Search & Rescueo First Aid Treatmento Evacuationo Recoveryo Rehabilitationo Health & Sanitationo Reconstruction

CDMP does not work directly in the field level. Actually CDMP works at policy making level. They always help those organizations which work in Disaster management to develop their policy. They also provide a fund for the institutional development to ensure effective response in emergency situation.

They observe the activities of other organizations and help to implement those organization's task in pre, post and during disaster.

CDMP consist of skilled, experienced, educated and disaster specialist. They help the MoDMR to build their strategy in disasters.

Role of World Vision response in post disaster period World Vison work all over the country to reduce the

impacts of disaster. But its main priority is for the coastal areas. It works especially in the coastal areas like Bhola, Bagerhat, Cox’s Bazar, Satkhira, Khulna, Borguna, and Patuakhali.

This organization prepared a voluntary team for search and rescue. The volunteer team work shoulder to shoulder with local volunteer group trained by UDMC, CPP.

Cont. They need to get Government permission to response in Post

disaster period. They response the affected community by following process:

Districts level

Upazila level

Union level

Affected people/ Beneficiaries

Cont. In post disaster period they perform some activities like search & rescue, evacuation, assessment, health and sanitation and rehabilitation also.

They managed temporary shelter for more than 50,000 people whose homes were torn to shreds by Cyclone Sidr in 2007.

Role of European Union response in post disaster period European Union is an organization which service is different

from other organization mentioned above. European is an organization that works for humanitarian assistance by helping to providing financial assistance. They do not perform their task directly but they are involved in humanitarian assistance indirectly.

They offer financial help to other humanitarian organization to perform their task easily. This organization work worldwide. This organization always remain to help the distress people. As it works policy level, so it renders to help other GOs, NGOs, INGOs and other organization by providing money to them.

They are involved to international organization such as:

UNESCO UNICEF UN OXFAM Information provider informed us that they worked a lot in the

aftermath of “AILA” disaster. It worked to develop the condition of AILA affected community. This organization provided financial help to the other organization that works to reduce the destructive effects of that disaster.

Conclusion Bangladesh is one of the highly disaster prone

vulnerable countries in the world. Due to disaster every year Bangladeshi people have to face the losses of lives, property, economy & environment which exceed the compensation capacity of the victim sometime government. We strongly believe that by taking protective measures , effective & due response strategy we can minimize the negative & destructive impact of disaster and can make a disaster tolerable BANGKADESH.
