Baha’iBaha’i Faithin Westminster

The Baha’i Faith has threeunderlying principles, that there isone God, that this God has been theinspiration for all the major religionsthat have appeared in history, andthat mankind is one family.

This God has been known by manynames in history, including Jehovah,Allah, Brahma, etc. Baha’is believethere is one reality behind thesenames and that Moses, Krishna,Zoroaster, Buddha, Jesus andMuhammad were all inspired by thisone God. Baha’u’llah, the foundingprophet of the Baha’i Faith, isrecognised by the Baha’is as God’sprophet for this day.

The idea of unity of humankind isalso fundamental to Baha’i belief.However, the diversity of humanityin terms of race, ethnicity andreligious belief is also something tobe appreciated, just as the diversityof colour, fragrance and variety offlowers in a garden add to thebeauty of that garden.

Baha’is believe in the independentinvestigation of truth, the equalityof men and women, that science andreligion should “go hand in hand”and the need for an internationallegislature to govern world affairs.Praying daily and reflecting on thescriptures are important to Baha’ispiritual life, as is service to others.

Directory of Faiths in WestminsterOrganisation of Directory & How to use itThe Directory is divided into 10 chapters, one for each of thenine religions represented in Westminster and one for interfaithentries. The chapters are organised alphabetically based on thename of each religion (i.e. Baha’i, Buddhist, Christian etc.). Eachchapter is introduced by a statement of belief of the particularreligion. The faith organisations are then listed in alphabeticalorder by name within each chapter. With respect to theChristian section, where the information has been provided, theChristian denomination is shown under the name of each listedorganisation.

Please note that in some cases where a religion (e.g. Sikhism;Zoroastrianism) has no place of worship or centre inWestminster, the details of the nearest place of worshipelsewhere in London are included.

All of the faith organisations with an entry in the Directory arelisted alphabetically by name in the Index. There is also a secondindex, which provides a listing of entries by ward.

We hope you will make use of the listing by ward index inorder to identify the other places of worship/faith basedorganisations near you so that you can make localconnections with all the diverse faith groups in your area.

AcknowledgementsWe would like to thank the faith organisations in Westminsterfor their help in providing the information included in thisdirectory.

DisclaimerNote that the Directory cannot claim to be fully comprehensivein terms of its coverage of faith organisations in Westminsterand it is possible that some organisations have been missed. Wewould hope to include any missed organisations when thedirectory is next updated.

Buddhism

Buddhismin Westminster

The Buddha’s teaching distinguishesitself by its reasoned view of reality.Mental process is discrete frommateriality but intensely bound upwith it as a prime conditioningfactor.

All that we areIs the result of what we havethought;We are founded on our pastthoughts,We are made of those thoughts.Our thoughts are the matrixFrom which we spring.(Dhammapada 1)

The quality of originating thoughtsdetermine the quality of theirmental and bodily resultants(kharma). Life is a series of fleetingprocesses, insubstantial andunsatisfactory in themselves. Whenconfusion is dismissed the processesof life are seen clearly (nirvana).This position is reached byrecognising and then penetratingFour Noble Truths: the recognitionof unsatisfactoriness of mental andmaterial states, and how they arisefrom affinity and attraction to paststates; and penetration of how onecan unwind the process withinoneself, and the Eightfold Pathpractised for this purpose.

Christianity

in WestminsterChristianity

Although there are many differentdenominations within Christianitythey all share the same main beliefs.They believe in and worship the oneGod who they can come to know inthree ways (the Trinity):

• the Father, who is beyond allthings, created all things andconstantly guides and sustains allhis creation;

• the Son, Jesus Christ, God whobecame human, whose teachingand life we follow and by whosedeath and resurrection we arefreed from sin and given eternallife;

• the Spirit, the enabler, thepresence of God within us and theworld, God’s inspiration, powerand strength.

The holy book for Christians is theBible, made up of a selection of theHebrew scriptures (the OldTestament), of Gospels telling of thelife and teaching of Jesus and ofletters from early Christian leaderscontaining teaching about Christianlife and faith.

Christianity is expressed throughworship and mission, private prayer,and service to others and lives ledto the glory of God. Theseexpressions have many differentforms and styles.

HinduismHinduism

in Westminster

Hinduism is perhaps the oldest of allreligions and yet endures today as ahealthy, colourful and exuberanttradition. It has intimate links withIndia, but its influence now extendsacross the globe. It is particularlyconspicuous through its art, food, dress,culture and philosophy.

Under the umbrella term of Hinduismexist extremely diverse traditions,differing philosophies and a widevariety of religious practises. Yet thecoherent links between all these arevisible too. These links indicate thecommon belief that the real self (atma)is distinct from the temporary bodymade of matter (prakriti). The eternalsoul identifies with matter and isentrapped by maya (illusion). Impelledby lust, greed, anger, etc. it accepts thecycle of repeated birth and death(samsara). Each soul creates its uniquedestiny according to the universal lawof action and reaction (karma). Hindusare required to honour all life thus apractitioner is required to adhere to avegetarian diet.

The goal of Hindus is moksa - liberationfrom this perpetual cycle through re-identification with the Supreme.Hinduism accepts different pathstowards the common goal of union withGod. Nonetheless, it demands respectfor the authority of the holy books (theVedas such as Bhagavad Gita andSrimad Bhagavatam) and stresses theimportance of and commitment to one’sordained duties (Dharma) as revealed bythese holy texts and received throughthe spiritual mentor (Guru).

Islam

Islamin Westminster

Islam is a monotheistic religion. Thefaithful Muslim believes in One Godto the exclusion of any other deity.The arabic word for God is Allah. Theword Islam means, among otherthings, peace and submission. Theword Muslim literally means “onewho submits to God!

The faithful Muslim believes in OneGod, in all the prophets andmessengers sent by Him (startingfrom Adam, Noah, to Abraham,Moses, Jesus and Muhammad - beingthe last or “Seal of the prophets”);in the books (scriptures sent toGod’s messenger); in the angels, inthe Day of Judgement, and in theabsolute knowledge and wisdom ofGod.

In Islam, the ‘spiritual’ and the‘physical’ are part of an integral andwhole way of life. The practise ofthe five pillars, on which Islam isbuilt, ensures that this integratedideal is realised. These pillars are:the declaration of faith (shahadah);performing prayer (salah); thewealth tax/poor-dues (zakah);fasting (sawm) and the pilgrimageto Makkah (Hajj).

These basic duties serve up themoral character of both theindividual and the community.Muslims derive their laws from theirholy book, the Quran, and theSunnah. The Sunnah is the practicalexample of the prophet Muhammed.

Directory of Faiths in Westminster

JudaismJudaism is a faith that goes backfour thousand years to Abraham, thefirst monotheist. His story is relatedin the Torah, the sacred text ofJudaism, which is written by handin the scrolls that can be seen inany synagogue. The rabbis said thatthe world is based on three things,on Torah, on worship and on deedsof loving kindness. The declarationof faith in Judaism can be found inthe SHEMA: “Hear O Israel, theEternal One is our God, the EternalGod is One”. Jews traditonally saythis twice a day, thereby making aconnection with God and with otherJews all over the world.

Jews live their lives according tomitzvot (commandments) given inthe Torah. These include ritual andethical commandments. For exampleJews are commanded to eat kosherfood but also to love theirneighbours and care for the poorand the needy. A synagoguefunctions as a house of prayer, ahouse of study, and a house ofassembly. Graven images, includinghuman images, are prohibited in theSynagogue. Instead the focus is onthe ARK and the NER TAMID(everlasting light) which hangsabove it, a reminder of theeverlasting light in the templewhich was a symbol of God’spresence.
